Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each

Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

In Ushijima's mind, it doesn't feel right to call him a stranger, even if Ushijima has no name to call him by other than the placeholder 'Brown Eyes.' Other people might find the his choice odd, since brown is the most common eye color in Japan, but to Ushijima it is more than fitting. In a crowd of same-colored eyes, a single pair stood out among the din seemingly for the sole purpose of finding and locking onto Ushijima's own, even if Ushijima doesn't strictly believe in such a egotistical thing. It might even mean more that there is nothing predestined about the way Ushijima and Brown Eyes would always look at each other on their morning commutes, that Ushijima's gaze had wandered in an errant maze until it landed on someone who seems intent on winning every staring contest they find themselves in. Ushijima is a competitive person himself, but he does not mind losing these one-on-ones, if only to see Brown Eyes' satisfied smile from his peripheral when he finally looks away.

It's a nice smile. Something flutters against the inner walls of Ushijima's stomach upon seeing it, a description more suited to the heroine of a drama or a romance novel, but he supposes these sentiments are indiscriminate when picking their victims. It's a nice smile and he would like it to be a staple of his day, more than just an occasional sight during rush hour.

But he does not know how to broach the subject, since it is something of a social taboo to break the silence when everyone is busy hurrying to work and/or blinking the sleep away from their eyes. He's not even sure if Brown Eyes would appreciate the sudden disruption into their unofficial routine—Ushijima might not consider him a stranger, but that does not mean Brown Eyes would feel the same. It would have to be at another time, another place.

Which is why it is serendipitous when Ushijima finds Brown Eyes one day, not in a cramped bus or train car, but in a near-empty convenience store, inspecting the wares on the iced coffee aisle. Ushijima still doesn't believe in destiny, but he imagines this must come close.

Before he can speak up, however, Brown Eyes notices him first, his stare curious, at first, as if trying to place Ushijima in the catalog of his memory, until it lights up with recognition.

"You! You're my stalker. You found me again."

Ushijima frowns, taken aback by the accusation. He did not consider that someone with such pleasant features might have a bad personality, which he supposes is his error. He is in half a mind to defend himself, half a mind to simply walk away, but Brown Eyes seems to have realized his mistake as well. His smirk gives way to a friendlier grin as he closes the fridge door, his full attention on Ushijima.

"Not a fan of jokes, are you? Very well, Mr. Serious, I'll be serious too." Ushijima might be more affronted at the nickname if it didn't indicate that Brown Eyes has also a assigned a placeholder for him; perhaps he has also been waiting for them to meet properly.

As if to prove Ushijima right—or to prove he can read minds, Ushijima wouldn't put it past him—Brown Eyes holds out his hand. "I'm Oikawa Tooru. I bet you were just dying to know."

Ushijima does not even attempt to hide his agreement. He touches Oikawa's hand with his own, lightly squeezing his soft palm, before his arm falls to his side along with the, "yes, I was," from his mouth. Oikawa doesn't seem to have expected that, his brown eyes widening in delight, but Ushijima has no room for pride at the moment. Only an introduction; only a hopeful start.

"My name is Ushijima Wakatoshi."

"Ushiwaka-chan, huh?" says Oikawa, with that smile of his that makes Ushijima feel like he's won the lottery to be on its receiving end. "It's about time."

It seems an inconsequential thing to worry about, in the grand scheme of things. There are many other objects and circumstances worthy of his anxiety, that should be occupying his mind instead. The upcoming exams that would determine if he would have to repeat his courses. His undetermined place on a volleyball team full of more experienced seniors and other recruited aces on a similar skill level as his own. Whether or not his grandparents would be offended by the infrequency of his emails due to his busy schedule. His plants and their varying needs in regards to sunlight and water and compatibility with a small apartment. The announcement that they would be discontinuing production of his favorite brand of hair wax.

His logic is sound, and if it concerned anything else it would win out like it usually does, except in matters that concern Oikawa. Oikawa has a habit of overturning Ushijima's expectations, and it is one of the many reasons that Ushijima likes him. Likes him so much. So it is logical to worry about other, more important things, but since this is about Oikawa and Ushijima likes him to the point of irrationality, every other concern seems to pale in comparison to the fact that Oikawa might not like him back enough. At least, not enough to hold his hand.

They aren't boyfriends just yet, but they have been going on dates, spending time together, talking to each other every waking minute, it seems—all things that people who actually are boyfriends do. It is not out of the realm of possibility, and in private Oikawa does not withhold his affection, his walls temporarily lowered, but in public Oikawa keeps to himself, maintaining a small but noticeable distance between the two of them. Ushijima has long abandoned the notion that Oikawa is restrained with everyone; the more he thinks about it, the more it becomes apparent that Ushijima is the exception.

After all, Aobajohsai's celebratory pile-ons after a win. After all, Oikawa's customary draping on Iwaizumi when he visits, irreverent of Iwaizumi's tolerance or mood. After all, the selfies he takes with his fan girls, cheeks pressed together, peace signs raised.

But Ushijima is doing his best not to impose. He tries to be content with what Oikawa is willing to give him, though sometimes he is not always so successful.

They've just left their usual hole-in-the-wall, and Ushijima has just given Oikawa his jacket because Oikawa has forgotten to bring his own. And then, unthinking, after putting it around Oikawa's shoulders, his hand sidles down to Oikawa's, fingers obvious in their intent to entwine before Ushijima realizes what he's doing and immediately pulls away. It earns him a strange look from Oikawa; a questioning look, one that travels from Ushijima's face, then to his hand, then at his face again.

"Oh, Ushiwaka-chan," sighs Oikawa, soft and sounding a little apologetic. Ushijima is about to let loose his own apology when Oikawa reaches for his hand and tentatively lets their fingers interlock. "I didn't think you were into this sort of thing."

Oikawa squeezes his calloused palm, tugging on him so they could start walking. "You know, you could've just asked. I don't bite—much."

For a moment, Ushijima's chest feels too full for him to use his lungs for anything other than breath. It's dizzying, touching Oikawa like this somewhere other people could see. A quiet declaration of he is mine, and I am his.

When he finds his voice, it's soft around the edges, and it no longer sounds sorry or worried. "I'll keep that in mind."

It's Oikawa's idea to return to their hometown for the summer break. "Tokyo is stifling," he says, even thought Ushijima knows that he loves it here—loves the lights, the noise, the constant bustle of people that Ushijima does not necessarily enjoy, but can learn to, if Oikawa is beside him. "Don't you think so, Ushiwaka-chan?"

Disagreeing with Oikawa when he is on one of his tangents is futile, and it is not as if Ushijima needs convincing to spend time somewhere he misses dearly. Fast forward a week, and they're finding a spot on the riverbank to rest their feet, sore from walking around on wooden slippers, and to watch the scheduled firework show. They light up the sky, and Oikawa's face, when he turns towards Ushijima.

"How romantic of you to bring me here," he says, and before Ushijima can correct that it was Oikawa's idea, not his, Oikawa is kissing him for the first time.

-

Being with Oikawa is not unlike the setting of their first kiss—loud and vibrant, while simultaneously intimate in the dark, as if there's a whole universe to see but Ushijima can only look at one bright star. Oikawa has made a poet out of him, it seems.

Oikawa has made him into many things.

Realistically, he knows that he has gotten by all these years just fine on his own, but now he also knows that there's a better, more improved version of himself that comes out when Oikawa is around. One that is patient, to keep up with Oikawa's nebulous nature; one that is persistent, as much as Oikawa is stubborn. One that loves harder, and smiles more.

One that idly traces the points on Oikawa's palm when they are lying together in bed, whispering secrets, and thinks meant to be.

-

If his relationship with Oikawa is a firework, bright and all-encompassing, then it also fades like one, on an early Tuesday morning.

The sun hasn't risen yet, and Ushijima is walking on quiet streets after Oikawa had kicked him out of his own apartment after a fight. They've become more frequently lately, when Ushijima's patience runs too thin when Oikawa is too mercurial. Ushijima thinks this will resolve itself, like all the other ones have: he'll return to the apartment, they'll have the angry, desperate makeup sex Oikawa is too proud to admit he likes, and the dust will settle until another mood swing stirs it up again.

He doesn't expect Oikawa to call, nor for his voice to sound so curt and final. "I don't think this is working out, Ushijima," he says, and that one, that last word, is what cracks across Ushijima's spine and makes him stand up straighter. "Don't be in such a hurry to come back; I won't be here when you do."

Oikawa hangs up, but Ushijima still has his phone to his ear, willing Oikawa to call again, say that it's a prank of some sort. He thinks of their most recent kiss (last night, after Oikawa had thanked him for cooking dinner, and before the argument started) and can't wrap his mind around the fact that it's the last.

He cant. He won't.

There is a version of himself that is better with Oikawa and it can't possibly amount to just this: to him, his fingertips pressed to his eyes and his sobs reined in as he listens to the monotonous static of the dead line. To him, alone at a bus stop at dawn, as the world rearranges around this new reality, feeling bigger and smaller at the same time.
