Bonus Round 3: FSTs

FSTs

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Profess your love for your favorite ships with the power of song! In this round, we ask you to create fan soundtracks and use them as inspiration for new fanwork.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts in the form of a short playlist (1-6 songs) and a ship from any of our nominated fandoms. Submit only the track listing and a link to where they can be listened to; the idea is for others to interpret what you present. You may also link to lyrics if you would like.
  • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Lilia & Sara). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Lilia/Sara). Please don't say "Any pairing," either.
  • Create content based on the playlists of others! Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Fills may be in any form you choose (except for another FST of course) as long as they are inspired by/fit the mood of the soundtrack they are filling for.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

Kageyama isn’t suited for parties. His father had bought him a new suit for the event—a masquerade party for the national team, so he has to look his finest— but he’s not used to having a tie around his neck and leather shoes on his feet. Hinata was just as clueless about what kind of masks to buy, so they’d picked out these giant bird masks that cover his whole face. It’s tight on his ears, just like how his slacks are too stiff.
Glass chandeliers spread light into a thousand little slivers. The dance floor is filled friends swinging each other and laughing, and couples holding each other close. He invited Hinata to be his +1, but Hinata’s already been whisked away by Nishinoya to spin around madly on the dance floor. A lot of the people not dancing have a champagne glass in hand, so he picks one up. He wonders if he should drink it, but his mask is covering his mouth.
A white suit glimmers in the reflected overhead light, deep in the crowd on the dance floor.
Kageyama is so stunned that he forgets to breathe. He shouldn’t be here, but be out in the crowd, where he could dance together with that man in the white suit. It frightens him a bit to think so fast, but his feet are already moving, and he’s wriggling his way between the dancers. They bump him like he’s a pinball between clothes of red, green, black, purple, all fresh and lovely, but not lovely enough.
He knows his life will end as soon as that gaze is turned towards him, but he reaches through the tangle of jackets and dresses and grabs onto the man’s sleeve.
Oikawa turns to him, and his mask resembles the sun; golden above white and turquoise, dazzling and fierce enough to burn.
“Oikawa,” Kageyama says, nearly breathless.
Oikawa’s mouth crinkles as soon as he recognizes Kageyama’s voice. “What's that on your face? Is that a plague doctor mask?”
He doesn’t know what that is. “I’m not sure. Please dance with me.”
“Really?” Oikawa gives him a frown down his nose. Their slight height difference hasn’t changed over the years. “Wait here,” he says, and vanishes into the crowd.
He didn’t say if he should leave the floor, so Kageyama stands in the middle of the dance floor, staring at the wall.
When Oikawa comes back, his hair is brushed, and his turquoise tie is smoothed out. He glances over and catches Kageyama looking at the curve of his mask hovering over his cheek. “Don’t look like that. I have to look much better than you.”
“So you’ll dance with me?”
A small sigh. “Yes, I’ll dance with you. But I’m in high demand. One minute. Only.”
Kageyama takes Oikawa's hand and puts his other hand on Oikawa’s back. A waltz is turns and circles. He knows turns and circles. Oikawa smells of camellias and a undertone of mint, and Kageyama lurches forward as he breathes it in.
The music is fast, and he moves his feet to match the speed. When he whirls around another couple, Oikawa squeezes his hand to keep his balance and Kageyama’s heart leaps. Practice is always distant, toss to toss, toss to spike, always across the court, never this close. He wants to keep this moment in place for longer and longer and longer—
“Stop, stop!” A sharp pain freezes Kageyama in place when Oikawa drives his heel onto Kageyama’s toes.
Oikawa steps back, rumpled and heaving. “Have you ever danced before? Ever?”
“No?”
“No wonder! You nearly smashed me into four other couples! Your head’s really only good for volleyball.”
Kageyama frowns beneath his mask. “So dance with me again.”
“You don’t know how to dance.”
“But I just danced with you, so this won’t be my first time.”
Oikawa’s eyes narrow between a fan of gold. Kageyama doesn’t move, even when a couple bumps him from behind.
Then, Oikawa holds out his hand again. “I’m leading this time. You’re not spinning me like a pinwheel again.”
Kageyama is so elated that he takes Oikawa’s hand without hesitation.

ellie when I got the notif for this, I put my hand over my mouth I was so overcome. you know I love your characterisation so much and I feel just, so blessed that you wrote an oikage thing. I don't even know where to start? this setup is just so perfect for them, the physical movement of a partnered dance gives them the push-and-pull feeling that's always so good with oikage, AND I LOVE HOW WONDERFULLY BALANCED YOUR KAGEYAMA IS, HIS CONSTANT YEARNING AND WANT, HIS STRAIGHTFORWARD DEMANDS, HIM OBEYING OIKAWA ANYWAY, He didn’t say if he should leave the floor, so Kageyama stands in the middle of the dance floor, staring at the wall, wow, kageyama, please.

I feel like I want to just, quote back every bit of dialogue you have in here, it's just so good, your oikawa is so nicely prickly but still. there. despite himself.

you know what, I'm gonna quote this back anyway, because reasons:

Kageyama is so stunned that he forgets to breathe. He shouldn’t be here, but be out in the crowd, where he could dance together with that man in the white suit. It frightens him a bit to think so fast, but his feet are already moving, and he’s wriggling his way between the dancers. He knows his life will end as soon as that gaze is turned towards him, but he reaches through the tangle of jackets and dresses and grabs onto the man’s sleeve.

I LOVE YOUR LANGUAGE HERE SO MUCH, it's so evocative, it feels so breathless, it mirrors kageyama's state so well. AND ALSO OIKAWA WITH AN UNDERTONE OF MINT, ellie, you know too much, don't use this against me, I'll die.

thank you for such a wonderful fill, I'm truly so honoured you wrote this, I love your words so much, I love your oikage so much, I love this minute waltz that really isn't going to be a minute at all, is it. good luck out there, oikage lmao

Lin!!! I'm so happy that you liked it! I'm actually beyond thrilled because I know you love Oikage deeply and I wanted to write something good for you!
It's fun writing Kageyama! You have this kid who internalizes a lot but also very bluntly says what he thinks- so different than ever buckling Oikawa. They have a good dynamic! As soon as you put up Chopin's waltz I knew what had to be done.
Aww, but mint is such a good weapon though....

LIN SHOWED ME THIS AND I AM SO SOFT WITH FEELINGS (and i am inevitably still screaming, which i am so sorry for — but it is my default reaction to good oikage)

i love this, like wildly so. i don't really like dancing much in fics, but it really suits them here. i love how this is soft and them still trying to figure out how to work together: oikawa prickly and provocative in his words, kageyama acknowledging and not taking to them but earnest in his wants. i was particularly moved by
Oikawa’s mouth crinkles as soon as he recognizes Kageyama’s voice. “What's that on your face? Is that a plague doctor mask?”

He doesn’t know what that is. “I’m not sure. Please dance with me.”
i love so much that it initially feels like it's all going well, but it doesn't. that is the type of oikage dynamic i like, where they're trying to meet each other halfway but aren't quite sure of how to do it yet, and thus stumble as a result. :') i wish i had the brains to say more because you DESERVE SO MUCH MORE. thank you so much for this!! i wish there was more oikage like this around tbh ;;

!!! Thank you so much!
There's a lot unspoken in their general dynamic that's really interesting, especially with how they deal with each other (and how often that's rocky) and I wanted to touch on that a little.
This is actually my first time writing Oikage so I'm super happy that you enjoyed it! ^v^

Ship: Kageyama Tobio/Oikawa Tooru
Fandom: Haikyuu!!
Major Tags: Canon and temporary character death, minor depiction of violence, Anime spoilers for Puella Magi Madoka Magica, small mention of a death threat
Other Tags: antagonism, unresolved feelings, unresolved ending, time manipulation, cisswap, magical girls
Word Count: 529 words

Listens to the first link and immediately thinks of Madoka Magica. This is set in the same verse as this fill (which is also a Madoka AU but from Kageyama's perspective). I modelled Oikawa as a cross between Kyouko and Madoka so heyheyhey, guess who's Homura. Hope you like this!

***

She tells Tobio time and time again: don't stare at me like I'm your sun.

Sometimes, Tobio listens, but more often than not, her eyes betray her, and they follow every single moment of Oikawa's with a hunger that she can never decipher.

(She doesn't want to understand it.)

Sometimes, Oikawa wants to grab her, to rattle the younger girl's shoulders like the cage she's unknowingly trapped her in by making her feel like she's the epitome of Tobio's whole world; she wants to scream, tear her nails into Tobio's dark, dark hair and pull it, if only to prove the sincerity behind her words when she says I'm not afraid to kill you.

(She doesn't want to be the one who first gets hurt.)

Sometimes, Tobio smiles and it makes Oikawa want to slap it off her face because it's the ugliest thing she's ever seen.

Sometimes, it's Oikawa who smiles and she, too, wants to slap her own damn self because it aches to be a hypocrite.

Tobio hardly flinches from any of her remonstrations, always, as if she's seen it all before and is just counting down one outburst after the other. Oikawa-san, she says. I know.

And she kisses Oikawa in the way she hates the most: gently on her neck, then, her lips.

I know. I know.

It takes every fibre of her will to not cry.

(Because, most of all, she doesn't want to be in love.)

***

It starts small:

Tobio presses Grief Seeds into her hands, sneaks them into her pockets when she refuses but isn't looking away hard enough.

What are you doing? Oikawa bites out, and crushes Tobio's little gifts to dust. The way the particles slip through her fingers so easily gives her a sense of relief that she's hard-pressed to admit.

I'm trying to keep you alive. Tobio replies, mouth downturned and fists clenched. Because you just never seem to know how to keep yourself alive each time.

And Oikawa would take offense for she purifies her Soul Gem often enough, but there's something genuine about how dogged Tobio is in her persistence and it makes the back of her throat twitch. How irritating.

Stop is all Oikawa can muster in the end.

I can't comes the simple answer.

***

It ends big:

Through the last flecks of consciousness, Oikawa makes out the hunched figure of Tobio standing over her soon-to-be-dead body.

She's crying. They're both crying. Above them, Walpurgis laughs and laughs as if she, too, is crying.

The world wants to go out with a bang but Oikawa won't let it do as it pleases.

She rises one last time; as a Witch, a god, who knows, she doesn't care anymore, just razes, and in the periphery of it all, Oikawa hears a sigh: again.

(Tobio twists the central mechanism of her shield and then, there is only black.)

***

Don't stare at me like I'm your sun. The words slide heavily off her tongue, reluctant from an aged repetition she doesn't know of.

I know. Tobio only nods, infuriatingly casual, resigned even. Her fingers twitch against her sides. That's what you said last time, too.

I'M IN SO MUCH PAIN AND I LIKE IT, ok like your language is so beautiful and there is such a rhythm to this that I was pretty much breathless from start to finish (to start to finish to start to start to start--) I truly love the ache of kageyama as homura staring at oikawa like the sun (PLEASE, THIS KILLS ME, THIS IS KILLING ME RIGHT NOW), but oikawa nothing like madoka at all. it's such a great flip of the homura/madoka dynamic.

kageyama being to one to have to loop and still staying soft despite this, kissing oikawa, trying to win her every time, trying to keep her alive, it speaks so much to how unbreakable kageyama is, something I love so much about the character, and I love the way it plays out here. please don't give up, kageyama. everybody, um, finds love in the end lmao

thank you for this beautiful heartache fill and thank you for these wonderful girls that I love so much!!
