Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

The metaphor here is absolutely lovely, and I never expected to see Seto here but the comparison makes this such a stark comparison, the difference of their dynamics and the minute it clicks for Imayoshi is so brilliant. The phrase stuck to Hanamiya’s foot with the glue of physics was brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing!

Tora liked to keep up with his teammates from high school. It wasn't always easy, as they all had pretty hectic schedules, trying to establish some kind of life for themselves, but he did his best.

He'd managed to rope Kenma into coming out with him tonight by promising to pay for his meal and drinks. It was good to see Kenma again. He hadn't changed much- still quiet and lazy and wry- but Tora noticed he didn't play games on his phone as much, when they hung out.

They caught up on their lives, talked about their friends, and, after a drink or two, fell back to trading memories of high school and the volleyball team. Tora was feeling comfortable and loose, just far gone enough to forget that this was the part where he usually ended up saying something embarrassing. He cradled his head in his hands and gazed at Kenma.

“I really liked you, back then,” he said, voice dreamy and vague. “Like, you know, that way.”

Kenma blinked.

“You did?”

“Yeah,” Tora sighed. “You were really cute back then. You're still cute, but you had that terrible hair, and you were all short and grumpy, and it was cute. And you were so intense, sometimes; I really liked that about you.”

“You never said anything,” Kenma was looking at him now, all his attention focused on Tora. He'd forgotten how that felt. Tora laughed awkwardly and scratched his chin.

“Well, I mean. I hardly said anything to myself, even. You saw how I couldn't talk to girls- what if I couldn't talk to you? My own teammate! It would be super embarrassing and obvious that I liked you. And, well, you never really showed any interest in anyone, and then Hinata came along and I thought, well, if I ever had a chance, it's gone now.” He laughed again, more subdued. “Like I ever had a chance.”

“You were really loud back then,” Kenma pointed out. “And aggressive, and passionate, and obnoxious.” He paused, and Tora opened his mouth to protest. “I would have said yes,” Kenma added quietly.

“You- what?” Tora stared. He felt the looseness from earlier evaporate, to be replaced by a cold tight feeling in his throat.

“If you had...” Kenma clenched a fist and opened it, spreading his fingers wide. “Confessed. Said something. I would have said yes.”

“Oh.” Tora leaned back in his seat. “Oh,” he said again. “That's...wow. Imagine, right?” He laughed. Kenma just looked at him, eyes gold and a little sad. Tora swallowed. He picked up his glass and held it out. “To missed opportunities, I guess.”

“To missed opportunities,” Kenma echoed.

Thank you so much for reading kurii!!! I'm so happy to hear the atmosphere worked for you *__* the cameos were really fun to do, especially kita's, because honestly how could I not include kita?

I'm also really pleased that second person POV worked for you even though it's not usually your thing! I haven't done such an extended piece with second person before, but I'm glad it didn't jar you too much.

Thank you so much for your kind, kind words!!! <3

oh man oh man i just need them to be happy ;w; i especially love that kyoutani is so soft and cant let go as much as yahaba cant, but in a much subtler way, by not moving out of their old place and keeping yahaba's plate. the whole routine of it just gets me because i want them to get past whatever it is that's holding them back and just be. this is so bittersweet and i am emotional. thank you for blessing us with this <3

This is such a bittersweet piece to read, because your first two paragraphs are so good-- Hanamiya's frustration with being told that his work is "good enough" is tangible, and then that reflecting on his perception of Imayoshi, it feels so solid; and then the last part, where it's a game and the last part-- the (please) and the "as if" are absolutely wonderful. Thank you for the fill! <3

Your second paragraph's imagery is absolutely brilliant, and it made me stop for a moment because it's so lovely, your turn of phrase feels good and settles so comfortably when you read it. And it's so neat to see you strip Hanamiya's potential down, in both the societal background and the drive for Imayoshi to help, and then it ends with it's cute and a;ldskjfds;alkfj

this is just SO TENDER I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF IM SCREAMING INTO THE AETHER RIGHT NOW, i love them and i love you, i love the oblique way you approached the quote, i love the detail you've given to their relationships outside each other (HANAOI RISE and hinata bulldozing over kageyama and iwaizumi still staying in touch with kageyama ;____;) but also the gentleness of how they acknowledge each other in the face of their history, kageyama retiring and oikawa remaining, the words they don't say/don't know how to say but still manage to convey through their familiarity w one another and the BODY LANGUAGE, the FINGERS ON THE CHIN and the FACE TOUCH and the WRIST GRAB (!!!!) and the COLLARBONE KISS (!!!!!!!!!!!!)

'His voice isn’t any softer but it feels kinder. Kageyama never realises he’s waiting for disappointment until it never arrives, and there’s a pang in his throat, something in his chest giving way. Oikawa’s touch is gentle, barely there at all.' [points at this and starts crying]

thank you so much!!! <33

i thought this would turn out sexier but instead it's just like the fluffiest Bokuto ever for some reason.

***

Kuroo had thought it would great being on the same team as Bokuto in university. If they had to go back to being third string, ball-shagging errand boys, at least he'd get to do it with his best friend. He'd thought it would be amazing.

Instead it's amazingly destroying his life. Because a week ago Oikawa (who hated being a freshman again more than anybody but still managed to have girls shrieking over him left and right) had casually asked, "Bokkun has a super cute butt, right? I think you could bounce 500 yen off that thing."

"W-what?" Kuroo had asked, because he'd never given Bokuto's butt any kind of thought before, but ever since then he couldn't stop noticing it. And it was a really nice butt, round and toned under his practice shorts, packed in tight enough to bounce 5000 yen worth of coins off it when he squeezed his way back into the skinny jeans he'd bought when he was out shopping with Oikawa the other day.

And Oikawa had done it on purpose, Kuroo just knew it. He'd always wondered why Kageyama and Hinata had such a hate on for this guy, but now he understands it, because Oikawa is cutesy, smiling, unrelenting evil.

"Stare harder, Tetsu-chan," Oikawa coos, making Kuroo startle and drop his water bottle. Kuroo tears his eyes away from Bokuto stretching long enough to give him a dirty look. "Not that I can say you have bad taste. But the real question is, do you have the guts to do anything about it?"

"Like what?" Kuroo demands, but Oikawa only murmurs a lilting hmmm and wanders away and man, no wonder everybody HATES that guy. Because after that Kuroo can barely even talk to Bokuto without hearing Oikawa's sly little hmmm in the back of his mind, tormenting him still long after the source of the torment has gone.

"Bro, are you okay?" Bokuto asks a few days later as they're changing for morning practice. Sitting on the bench, Kuroo grunts, keeping his eyes pointedly focused on tying his sneakers until Bokuto is done changing.

They've changed together roughly seven thousand times in the last three plus years alone with no problem, but this week if Kuroo sees so much as the strip of skin running across the small of Bokuto's back, he feels like he's dying. He might be actually dying. Hell is like this, naked Bokutos all over flexing and doing squats and demons with Oikawa's hair cackling and snapping pictures with their phones.

"You've weird all week," Bokuto pushes, and now there's an edge of doubt creeping into his voice. "Are you mad at me? Are we having a fight?"

"No! No, come on," Kuroo looks up just at the moment Bokuto says, "Whoops, my deodorant," and bends over to scoop it up, giving Kuroo an up close and personal view of Bokuto's best asset, Bokuto's black briefs clinging to it like the curve of a sleek magic eight ball.

Kuroo has no excuse for what he does next, which is to pull his hand back and slap Bokuto's cute, round butt as hard as he can. When Bokuto jerks upright with a yelp, Kuroo's hand is still in the air, and they both stare at each other with huge eyes and pink cheeks.

"I like your butt," Kuroo says stupidly, because he can't think of anything else now except for how for a split-second, Bokuto's butt had fit perfectly against his palm.

"You do?" Bokuto tilts his head, then twists to try and see it himself, first over one shoulder and then the other. "My butt? Why? What's it doing?"

"It's not doing anything." Kuroo starts to laugh and then he can't stop, leaning his elbows on his thighs until he can draw a breath. "It's just cute. You're cute."

"Like my butt?" Bokuto asks. He looks shy, which is even cuter, just like how he's turned around to hide his butt against the lockers now that he knows Kuroo was looking at it. "If my butt's cute, and you like it, and I'm cute, does that mean you like me too?"

"Uh, yeah. I think I might." Kuroo rubs a hand through his hair, sheepish and embarrassed, but it kind of feels okay too. "D'you wanna talk about it after practice."

"Yes," Bokuto says, eyes lighting up as if Kuroo had suggested practicing for infinity hours instead. Kuroo feels flattered. "Can we get coffee together? Like in a romcom?"

"It's a date," Kuroo answers, and Bokuto gives a breathless noise like he's an over-excited balloon.

"Ugh, so wholesome," Oikawa mutters across the locker room. Beside him, Daichi is clearly trying to pretend he can't hear anything. "I was hoping he'd ask to kiss it better."

“You still don’t know any constellations?”

Kuroo is laughing at him again. Tooru keeps his gaze fixed on the sky above, but sees his smile anyway, bright and toothy. “I was busy,” he complains, even though he’s had a full year since the last time they made the trip up to this spot, and another year since the time before that, and a full three years since the first time they’d made it up the mountain during their first year of college.

“And here I thought I’d get at least one good story from you before we graduated.” Tooru can see Kuroo flopping back onto his back in the periphery of his vision, sprawling out and casually hooking one ankle over Tooru’s leg.

“I can tell you stories,” Tooru responds easily. “Just not the ones you want.” He turns to Kuroo finally, and it’s gratifying to see Kuroo looking back at him.

Night set a couple hours ago, but they can still hear chatter from the campfire nearby, the occasional shout or yell of laughter piercing through the quiet of the setting. The others - Bokuto, Daichi, Ushijima - they’re all here too. It’s a regular party, complete with the part where Tooru sneaks away with Kuroo to be alone with someone for a few minutes.

“Kiss me,” Tooru says, or maybe doesn’t say. Either way, Kuroo’s lips are on his, gentle and chaste, like they do this all the time. Which… they do. As often as they can manage. But between exams and parties and all sorts of situations that involve their friends infringing on their space, they’ve barely been able to manage at all.

Which begs the question: “Why don’t we tell them?”

Kuroo reels back at that, sitting up and looking down at Tooru. “What?”

“Them.” He glances towards the campfire, then back up at Kuroo, heart thudding in his chest. “Why haven’t we told them?”

“I thought… you never seemed keen on it, so I didn’t bring it up.” Kuroo is lost, yes, but he isn’t upset. Tooru can tell as much. He’s just nervous, and confused, and curious.

So Tooru does his best to explain, his eyebrows scrunching up as he thinks. “I guess you’re right,” he muses. “I wasn’t really keen on it until now. But… I don’t know. Something’s different now.”

“Are you getting all sentimental on me, Oikawa?” Kuroo raises an eyebrow, and Tooru laughs, reaching a hand up to smooth a thumb over his cheek.

“Shut up. I just wanted you all to myself at first, and now I want to brag about you. That’s all.” He props himself up on one elbow to kiss Kuroo, long and slow. “Is that okay?”

“Of course it’s okay. Do you want to go tell them now?” Kuroo’s grinning again. His smile is a brilliant thing in the darkness of the evening, and Tooru doesn’t want to move from where he is right now.

“In a couple minutes,” he responds, as coyly as possible, before pulling Kuroo back down on top of him.

It starts like this: hearts pounding, sneakers squeaking against the floor, point after point taken by the other team, and a stoic face that betrays no joy at the win, no condescension towards the losing team.

Somehow, that just makes it worse.

Or maybe it starts like this: a college party, a heated debate, a drink thrown in that stoic face and regret clawing at his insides despite plastering a triumphant grin onto his face for the benefit of the onlookers.

He doesn’t know how to be someone that isn’t who people already expect.

Wakatoshi would probably say it starts like this: a pencil willingly given in a class shared, notes pored over together in the midst of finals season, a tentative allyship forged in the face of certain academic doom.

If grabbing a pen out of Wakkun’s fingers counts as holding hands, Tooru might concede that he has a point.

But for Tooru, their real start is unarguable.

It is: a late summer evening and the hum of cicadas in the distance. It is: Tooru nursing a desperate crush for the better part of a year, too pessimistic to act on it, too optimistic to let it go. It is: a softness to Wakatoshi’s features that is both strange and familiar in the worst of ways.

“You deserve better,” Tooru says, apropos of nothing, except if Wakatoshi could read his mind, he’d understand that Tooru can’t see him smile without thinking of what could make him smile, thinking of how he falls short of so many of those requirements.

“I’m happy with what I have,” Wakatoshi says, and the words could say volumes if Tooru could let himself read into them.

He struggles for a moment, then says, “I’m not good.” Not like you. The three words remain unspoken but hang in the air between them anyway. It’s been years. Wakatoshi can understand his silences as well as his words at this point.

Wakatoshi closes his book, sliding in a bookmark to mark the page. He doesn’t like folding the pages over. The books in the household with creases are the product of Tooru’s petty fingers, on the days he looks to irritate Wakatoshi, the days he chooses to say, “I know you and I am not afraid to use that knowledge against you.”

God, he’s no good.

“I would not describe you as good,” Wakatoshi says, as if he’s read Tooru’s mind. Tooru jumps between shock, resentment, anger, disappointment, acceptance.

As always, he defaults to charming, unaffected. “Ushiwaka-chan! How rude!” He grins easily, because a fake smile is second nature to him. “How am I supposed to take that?”

“I wouldn’t describe you as good,” he repeats, and the second time hurts almost as much as the first. “But I do not think I’m good either. We all have our own unique traits. Each human being is a mix of good and bad.” He takes a sip of his tea as Tooru’s heart calms down, chiding him for being so quick to assume that Wakatoshi was really making any sort of judgment about his character. He almost misses the next words Wakatoshi says: “You are a good person to know, though. I’m grateful that you’re in my life.”

“I- what?” Tooru’s eyebrows jump up into his hairline. “What did you say?”

Wakatoshi frowns. “Was I unclear in my phrasing? I didn’t mean to be vague. All I meant to say is that I love you as you are.”

Tooru chokes on his spit, and Wakatoshi has to thump him on the back a couple of times before he can speak. “You- love me?” he pants out when he can manage taking a gulp of air, his voice a couple octaves higher than he’d like it to be.

“Yes.” Wakatoshi’s frown just gets deeper. “Wasn’t it obvious?”

“Oh.” Oh. “Oh.

It starts like this: helpless laughter met with a confused look, fingers clinging in old faded t-shirts, kisses shared as the sun sets on one day and rises on the next.

"That weapon of yours has such a provocative shape. Does it feel good to fire it? I bet it does~"

Suga's weapon is a staff, and right at this instant he feels like he may give this man what he wants and shoot a fireball up his ass.

He offers an only somewhat pained smile. "Usually, people don't want to find out."

The man pouts and sidles closer. Suga stands his ground. "I'm not exactly a usual person," the man says.

That statement isn't one that Suga can argue with. Only a handful of people have ever made it this close to his home, and none of them tried the tack that this man did: blasting a hole through his magical barricade with sheer force. Suga's protections work over time — not a long period of time, half an hour or so — to drain intruder's strength until they can't stand, much less attack. This man hit them with magic until they shattered.

This is hardly a precarious position for Suga, but it is irritating. He's going to have to spend hours rebuilding those.

"Is there something you want?" he asks, testily. He doubts it's the usual "please, oh powerful witch! Bless my [child/crops/cat]" request, but he would be a worse person than he is not to ask.

The intruder hums and looks around. "A cup of tea would be nice."

Suga lets the butt of his staff touch the ground, and sends a trickle of power with it to wrap around the man's ankles.

The man stills, and smiles. "Now, what did I do to deserve this, hm?"

"It's only a precaution," Suga replies, smiling back at him instead of yelling that he destroyed his perfectly good protections and is an asshole. Suga deserves a medal.

"Most powerful dark wizard in the country... I thought you might be lonely," the man says and picks up one of Suga's books.

Suga smiles, and plucks the book out of the man's hands. "I'm a witch, actually."

The man laughs. "My mistake."

Suga blows traces of the man off the cover of the book. "Since you have some idea of who I am, it would be polite for you to tell me who you are," Suga points out.

The man chooses to look surprised at this, and Suga resists the very real urge to stand on his foot. "I didn't think you would care."

Suga tries hard not to bristle. It is an effort. "I don't. But it would be polite."

The man picks up another book, and Suga snatches it away, just like the first. "Oikawa," he says, and Suga can only assume it's his name. Suga can feel compact magic coiled beneath his skin. He imagines that's how he so efficiently destroyed his protections — releasing the control to fling it at them like a hammer or bolt from a crossbow.

"Are you sure you won't offer me a cup of tea?" Oikawa asks, eyes twinkling.

"Quite," Suga replies. He's had enough. He taps his staff on the floor, and he has just enough time to see Oikawa's eyes open wide as he's swallowed up by Suga's magic and deposited in a field some kilometres away.

Suga frowns at the remains of his protections, wondering whether it will be worth constructing them again when Oikawa seems very much like the type to come and pull them down again tomorrow.
