It starts like this: hearts pounding, sneakers squeaking against the floor, point after point taken by the other team, and a stoic face that betrays no joy at the win, no condescension towards the losing team.
Somehow, that just makes it worse.
Or maybe it starts like this: a college party, a heated debate, a drink thrown in that stoic face and regret clawing at his insides despite plastering a triumphant grin onto his face for the benefit of the onlookers.
He doesn’t know how to be someone that isn’t who people already expect.
Wakatoshi would probably say it starts like this: a pencil willingly given in a class shared, notes pored over together in the midst of finals season, a tentative allyship forged in the face of certain academic doom.
If grabbing a pen out of Wakkun’s fingers counts as holding hands, Tooru might concede that he has a point.
But for Tooru, their real start is unarguable.
It is: a late summer evening and the hum of cicadas in the distance. It is: Tooru nursing a desperate crush for the better part of a year, too pessimistic to act on it, too optimistic to let it go. It is: a softness to Wakatoshi’s features that is both strange and familiar in the worst of ways.
“You deserve better,” Tooru says, apropos of nothing, except if Wakatoshi could read his mind, he’d understand that Tooru can’t see him smile without thinking of what could make him smile, thinking of how he falls short of so many of those requirements.
“I’m happy with what I have,” Wakatoshi says, and the words could say volumes if Tooru could let himself read into them.
He struggles for a moment, then says, “I’m not good.” Not like you. The three words remain unspoken but hang in the air between them anyway. It’s been years. Wakatoshi can understand his silences as well as his words at this point.
Wakatoshi closes his book, sliding in a bookmark to mark the page. He doesn’t like folding the pages over. The books in the household with creases are the product of Tooru’s petty fingers, on the days he looks to irritate Wakatoshi, the days he chooses to say, “I know you and I am not afraid to use that knowledge against you.”
God, he’s no good.
“I would not describe you as good,” Wakatoshi says, as if he’s read Tooru’s mind. Tooru jumps between shock, resentment, anger, disappointment, acceptance.
As always, he defaults to charming, unaffected. “Ushiwaka-chan! How rude!” He grins easily, because a fake smile is second nature to him. “How am I supposed to take that?”
“I wouldn’t describe you as good,” he repeats, and the second time hurts almost as much as the first. “But I do not think I’m good either. We all have our own unique traits. Each human being is a mix of good and bad.” He takes a sip of his tea as Tooru’s heart calms down, chiding him for being so quick to assume that Wakatoshi was really making any sort of judgment about his character. He almost misses the next words Wakatoshi says: “You are a good person to know, though. I’m grateful that you’re in my life.”
“I- what?” Tooru’s eyebrows jump up into his hairline. “What did you say?”
Wakatoshi frowns. “Was I unclear in my phrasing? I didn’t mean to be vague. All I meant to say is that I love you as you are.”
Tooru chokes on his spit, and Wakatoshi has to thump him on the back a couple of times before he can speak. “You- love me?” he pants out when he can manage taking a gulp of air, his voice a couple octaves higher than he’d like it to be.
“Yes.” Wakatoshi’s frown just gets deeper. “Wasn’t it obvious?”
“Oh.” Oh. “Oh.”
It starts like this: helpless laughter met with a confused look, fingers clinging in old faded t-shirts, kisses shared as the sun sets on one day and rises on the next.
