Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

I love their friendship and space imagery. This turned out to be soooo soft. Hope you enjoy!

Imaizumi loved stargazing. Most people didn’t know this – they thought he was single-mindedly focused on one thing and one thing only, cycling.

He guessed in a way, though, it was cycling that brought him the stars.

One night, after he finished riding what was supposed to be his cool down, but ended up being a 25 km workout, he found himself tired and exhausted at the edge of town. He fell back into a field of grass to catch his breath, but he found that it was taken away instead.

The night sky lay above him in all its grandeur. It seemed to consume him, like there was nothing else in the world but the infiniteness of the universe and the sound of his breathing.

He wished he had paid attention in class so he could recognize the constellations, but it didn’t seem to matter. He didn’t need to know their names or their stories to feel the immenseness of it all.

It became a tradition after that, for the rest of primary school and then middle school and into high school.

Every time he would go out on night ride (admittedly, sometimes he didn’t make the best decisions for his sleep schedule), he would stop and stare at the stars. Sometimes it would only be for a couple of minutes, others for half an hour or more, and, sometimes, he would even accidently fall asleep. He would wake up the next morning sore and with bugs crawling on his face, but he could only remember the contentedness he felt has the sky gently, and without him noticing, lulled him to sleep.

When Onoda, trying to placate Imaizumi and Naruko’s bickering, suggested that they go on a night ride during their sleepover, Imaizumi unconsciously started riding his usual path. He didn’t even notice when he had pulled off to the side of the road, near the field that had started it all.

Naruko and Onoda had followed him off the road, curious and slightly worried looks on their faces.

“Is there something wrong with your bike?” Onoda bends down, as if to inspect Imaizumi’s bike, before Imaizumi waves him off.

“Then what is it hotshot?”

Imaizumi doesn’t know how to explain himself. He’s never been the best at words and explaining how he just wanted to stop to look at the stars, well… it doesn’t seem to capture the vastness or splendor or meaning of it all.

Instead, he gently grabs their wrists and pulls them deeper into the field. They come along, looks of surprise on their faces.

“Are you sure this is safe?” Onoda asks, anxiety evident in his voice. Imaizumi stops at the bottom of a small hill, just far enough that the road isn’t visible anymore. He sits down and gestures to the other two to do the same.

He leans back, like he has done dozens of times before, and stares at the sky above. Like that first time, it never fails to take his breathe away. He knows that the other two must have followed his lead because he hears a gasp of awe from Onoda and Naruko suddenly cuts off whatever he had been saying before.

For a while, it’s just the three of them staring in silence at the sky above them. It’s peaceful and serene. There’s a togetherness that Imaizumi feels that wasn’t there all those other times he’s done this alone.

“Next time, we should bring snacks,” Naruko states, eventually breaking the silence. The boys get up, knowing that if they stay any longer they’ll worry their parents. Has they head back to their bikes, Onoda chimes in that he thinks that blankets would make the whole experience more comfortable, and also that he could maybe find his star guide from when he was kid.

Imaizumi smiles, giving one last glance at the sky above.

Yeah…. Next time.

Oh man I just got goosebumps reading this ahhhh ;; THIS IS SO SOFT and so, so, so wonderful — how he enjoyed being alone with the universe at first, but then he subconsciously led the other two to that spot too... AND THAT LAST LINE :'') It's just something that happens naturally and just!! Ahhhh I love this so much thank you for this fill ;;

Thank you so much for your comment (and prompt!!). I really, really enjoyed writing the space imagery and how Imaizumi just experiences the universe. I'm a sucker for good friendships and the softness of stargazing, so I really loved your prompt! Thanks again for the comment!!
