forever haunted by the future past DLC (although this fill could probably be read as FHQ verse too)

“In the future of despair, the children's misery knows no end. The children act as decoys, prepared to lose their lives, to allow their companions to escape.”
Tsukishima wiped the corner of his mouth on his glove. His lungs burned with each ragged inhale. He rested his bandaged fingers on the hilt of his sword to disguise the way they were shaking.
He leaned heavily against the bridge post to stay upright, honey-gold eyes scanning the horizon across the chasm. This was not a safe place to rest. There was no cover, and there was only the one bridge spanning the gap. Uneasiness trickled cold down his spine, raising the hairs on the nape of his neck. It would be an easy ambush. Too easy.
At his feet, Yamaguchi collapsed in a sweaty heap, gasping loudly for air. Hinata sagged into Kageyama's side, clutching at his tunic and dragging them both to their knees with indignant squawks. Yachi limped over to wearily separate them from their tangle of limbs. All of them looked worse for wear after their last scuffle, makeshift bandages barely covering the scrapes that still bled sluggishly through. Tsukishima narrowed his gaze in frustration.
"I think we lost them, Tsukki," Yamaguchi wheezed.
"Let go of my armor, dumbass, your hands are filthy," Kageyama snapped.
"You're too heavy, get off me," Hinata retorted, shoving his dirty palm in Kageyama's spluttering face.
"G-g-guys," Yachi stammered as they began to wrestle on the ground. Her teeth chattered as she hugged her sides. "We can't stay here for long. W-We have to deliver Sable and Argent to the capital. Th-th-the others are counting on us-!"
"She's right. They're going to use the bridge to trap us," Tsukishima calmly pointed out. "The Risen are gathering on the far side. Once our pursuers catch up on this side, we'll have nowhere left to run."
"Th-then we're all going to die," Yachi wailed, burying her face in her hands. Her Taguel ears flopped forward, completing her dejected posturing. "I'll go extinct! And if we die, the gemstones are lost, and Ylisse will fall! Without the Awakening, the whole world is d-d-doomed! Th-they'll tell stories for centuries about how it was all our fault!"
"Yacchan, if everyone dies, no one will be left to blame you," Yamaguchi patiently pointed out.
"Oh. That makes me feel a little better, actually," Yachi admitted, cheeks pink with embarrassment.
"We're not going to lose the gemstones," Kageyama announced with a mulish set to his jaw.
Tsukishima couldn't resist rolling his eyes. "Oh? And what's your brilliant plan, exactly?" he murmured, picking at his scabbard.
Hinata perked up at his side, beaming with that irrepressible confidence that only an idiot could still hold onto while the world was literally ending around him.
"Duh! We'll just smash through the Risen on the far side before the ones behind us catch up!"
Kageyama grabbed him by the hair and gave him a light shake.
"Oi. That was my idea, Hinata."
"Oww, you were too slow, Bakageyama!"
Before they could start tussling again, Tsukishima caught Yamaguchi's eye with a question. Yamaguchi gulped nervously, but nodded.
"You three need to cross immediately, then," Tsukishima stated. He could see shadows moving in his peripheral vision, and flash of red here and there in the underbrush. The fetid scent of rotten flesh had reached his nose on the breeze. They were out of time. "Yamaguchi and I will cover your backs. We can cut the bridge once we're over so they can't pincer us in the middle. It's our only shot."
Yachi and Hinata immediately burst into protest about splitting up, but Kageyama nodded tersely. He might be an idiot, but at least he understood the mission was their first priority. They could catch up later. He grabbed Yachi by one arm and Hinata by the other, and they took off at a stumbling run.
Tsukishima tuned out their shouts and turned his back on the bridge.
Yamaguchi leaned heavily on his spear beside him, face pale beneath his freckles. He was sweating heavily from the Risen bite he'd taken to the ankle earlier that day. It was going to get infected, Tsukishima thought with annoyance. Tsukishima knelt to adjust the clumsy dressing, long fingers gentle but firm on Yamaguchi's bare leg.
"Shouldn't we start crossing too, Tsukki?" Yamaguchi dithered, casting an anxious glance at the Risen shambling into view. They spilled into the clearing, misshapen lumps of discolored flesh and exposed bone, preternatural eyes glowing and teeth snapping with eagerness. "We can hold them off for a bit, but there's too many to fight outright."
Tsukishima sighed. If they couldn't take out the horde on this side, their entire gambit would fail.
He tightened the bandage. Yamaguchi hissed a sharp inhale above him.
"I'll hold them off. They'll charge us as soon as we turn our backs. Your best chance is to go after the others so I can cut the bridge now," he added under his breath.
"No way am I leaving you," Yamaguchi snapped.
Ah, of all the times for him to show some backbone, Tsukishima thought bitterly.
"Don't be an idiot. Only one of us needs to keep them distracted," he explained. His fingers dug a little tighter into Yamaguchi's calf, but he did not meet his gaze. "You can still save yourself. Do you want me to die, or do you want all of us to die?"
"You're the one being an idiot! Stop talking like we've already lost, Tsukki!"
Yamaguchi grabbed him by the collar of his gambeson and hauled him up to his full height.
Tsukishima blinked, startled by the sudden eye contact. Yamaguchi's expression was fierce, eyes shining with the same defiant light he'd seen on the battlefield. When had he gotten so tall, anyway?
When did Yamaguchi become such a hero?
Yamaguchi snarled in his face, "We can still fight! We've been through too much together for you to give up now. Lives are depending on us! A-Akiteru died for you, Tsukki, and he wouldn't want you to throw that life away!"
Tsukishima clenched his teeth against the sudden surge of emotion welling in his chest. Now was not the time to think about the past. He couldn't afford to be distracted. He needed to remain calm.
"I'm not-! I'm not. This is the best plan, Tadashi! The gemstones are more important than me-"
"I don't care!" Yamaguchi exploded. "So what if it is the smartest plan? So what if it's to save the world? There's no point in saving this world if you're not gonna be around to see it! And I don't want any part of a world without you! I'm fighting with you and that's that!"
"You…"
They glared at each other for a long moment, panting harshly, hands shaking. He could hear the scraping and shambling of the Risen drawn to their voices. There were only seconds left before they'd be forced to fight for their lives.
In a quick burst of inspiration, Tsukishima drew his sword and slashed the bridge line. He could hear Hinata's shout of dismay from all the way across the canyon, as the suspended bridge twisted and plunged into the emptiness.
Yamaguchi's radiant smile beamed from ear to ear. The relief in his eyes was evident as his fingers slowly uncurled from Tsukishima's clothes.
"You just called me Tadashi," he murmured, sounding awestruck. He picked up his spear and leveled it toward their enemies, but his knees were wobbling.
Tsukishima's ears burned pink. He bumped his back against Yamaguchi's, sword hand steady. In his defense, he figured he was about to die anyway, so in a moment none of this would matter.
"Shut up, Tadashi. Don't you dare die on me," Tsukishima said softly.
"I'm not going anywhere… Kei," Yamaguchi grinned beside him.

“You’re not playing,” says Kasamatsu. “Look at your ankle.”
Kise’s looking; he’s had a boot and then an ice pack on all morning and it’s just reduced in size enough for him to pull on his sneaker. He’s not letting this opportunity pass him by.
“My ankle’s smaller. I can take them, Kasamatsu-san.”
“Maybe you think you can, but you might screw it up; you might need surgery or something major. Third place isn’t worth it.”
“What if we’d won?”
“Then we’d play Rakuzan without you.”
Kise glares; as if. Coach Takeuchi has a mile-wide inferiority complex when it comes to his old teammates, specifically Harasawa, Araki, and Shirogane. Nakatani doesn’t bother him as much, so he’ll tell Kise to rest now, but fuck that. They can beat Shutoku. Midorima’s been waiting; he deserves better than Kaijou without their ace.
“Nakamura—”
“Can’t do what I do. I’m not saying all four quarters; I’m saying I want to go out there. I have something to give; that’s my burden as the ace, isn’t it? If you’re the captain, then you should want me out there.”
“I want what’s best for the team, what’s best for the players.”
“Isn’t a win what’s best? It’s your last game.”
“Kise,” says Kasamatsu, running a hand through his hair. “I appreciate the thought.”
“You want to beat Shutoku? You want to fight? You don’t have to start me. Just put me in when you need me; let me go a little bit. Let me try and hold them back. Please, Kasamatsu-san. I want this.”
“I know you do. I know you want that last game back.”
And it hurts, all over again, that game that they should have won, that Kise should have pushed himself just a little harder, just a few more points, a little more—they’d be in the final, down him at full power, against Rakuzan. Still a better outcome.
“Hey,” says Kasamatsu, and Kise realizes he’s tearing up again.
Kasamatsu looks at Kise, as a boyfriend and not as a captain, his gaze softer. Kise sniffs, and Kasamatsu kisses the tip of his nose, ruffles his hair, and then hugs him. He’s smaller than Kise, very noticeably so, but his arms feel strong and secure, and for a moment Kise believes they’ll pull it off without him.
“Not without me,” says Kise. “Please.”
“Never thought I’d hear you beg for this,” says Kasamatsu, voice a little hoarse. “Don’t push it, but I’ll see what I can do.”

The Touou standards line up along the horizon like a distant fire that's bound to get closer and burn everything in its path.
Kise stands at the wall of the keep taking in the the sight of the pending battle. He can't see Aomine, not just yet, but he knows that he won't have to wait for very long. Touou's army has become one of the strongest invading forces since convincing Aomine to join their ranks. Kise knows how dangerous Aomine can be on his own, but he has no idea how much worse things will be now.
He's pulled out of his thoughts by a hard thump on his back. Kasamatsu walks around to stand by his side, frowning at the Touou standards instead of looking at Kise.
"What the hell are you worrying about, Kise? You'll get frown lines if you keep doing that."
"Like you?" Kise teases, but his heart isn't in it. Humour is a little too difficult, when he's imagining Aomine tearing his new home apart, after he's just started growing attached to it. He sighs, looking at Kasamatsu. "Aominecchi is a monster, you know. If you stand in his way, he'll cut you down."
Kasamatsu snorts dismissively. "So? We have a monster of our own, don't we? You're not just going to roll over and let Touou walk all over you like a welcome mat, I hope."
"Of course not," Kise smiles, but he tenses up when he finally sees Aomine walking between the ranks, until he's at the very front line.
Aomine keeps walking, until he's standing on his own on the battlefield, and looks directly in Kise's direction, locking eyes despite the distance between them. Then, he shifts, limbs twisting and elongating, until there's a dragon standing in his place, dark blue scales glinting in the sunlight. He lets out a loud roar, challenging Kise to come out and face him.
Kise tightens his grip on the stone of the keep, and he's about to go flying forward when he feels Kasamatsu grab hold of his arm.
"You're not fighting him alone," Kasamatsu tells him. "Not because you can't, but because you don't have to. I'm with you."
"But…" Kise begins, his eyes going wide as he sees the bow and quiver full of arrows that Kasamatsu has with him.
"I don't remember asking," Kasamatsu tells him, raising an eyebrow. "Having help doesn't make you weak. It just means you have more chance of surviving. I'm not planning on losing you, Ryouta."
Kise smiles at him, and covers Kasamatsu's hand with his own. "Stay on my back. My spines will protect you. Let's win together, Yukio."

kuramochi reaches out a hand, grips miyuki's wrist tightly.
"what do you think you're doing?" he hisses, when miyuki doesn't even look fazed by his intervention. instead, he looks dead set on what he plans to do--what he thinks he has to do alone--and doesn't seem like he'll give in. if he's afraid... well, miyuki doesn't show it. but youichi knows better.
"what do you think?" he finally asks kuramochi, hand limp in kuramochi's, wand gripped tightly in his other hand. "it's time i--"
kuramochi knows what miyuki's going to say before he says it, cuts it off with a firm, "no."
miyuki looks at him, and he can see that miyuki doesn't want to go, but thinks he has to. thinks he has to confront what's outside hogwarts and waiting for him if he wants to end this war. if he wants to save all these people.
"you heard the ultimatum. i go or everyone--"
"people are dying anyway," kuramochi insists, pulls miyuki closer to him, grips his shoulders tightly like he wants to make him see. why can't he make him see?
"because of me."
"no. because of them." he gestures at the doors, at where there are people waiting out there to kill miyuki the first chance they've got. "do you think it'll be over if you sacrifice yourself? do you think that's going to end this? it'll just give them the chance to overrun everyone! that's what they want. to get rid of you when you're the only one who can stop them."
miyuki groans, presses a hand against his forehead, looks away from kuramochi.
(he remembers. remembers a few months ago while they'd been running, together, looking for the only way they knew to even the playing field, to end this. they'd spent many nights concealing themselves, not knowing if they'd get caught or killed, face way to many close calls with the things they did do.
miyuki pressed his face against his knees, then, mumbled to kuramochi what he thought but never told anyone else. "i'm no hero." i can't be what they all want me to be.
kuramochi hadn't said anything, put wrapped an arm around miyuki's shoulders, the touch telling him more than words could. you don't have to be one alone. let me help you. let me--)
"if you do anything, it's not going to be alone."
miyuki looks up at him, eyes panicked. "you're the reason i have to do it alone! youichi--"
("you don't have to protect me," he'd told miyuki months ago.)
he'd meant it. he wants to look out for miyuki as much as miyuki's been doing for him. he doesn't want miyuki to sacrifice himself under the pretenses that it will keep kuramochi safe.
("it's hard not to," miyuki told him later. "you're all i've...")
"if you want to go, fine. but it won't be alone." he takes miyuki's hand, squeezes it. "we'll figure something out. together, kazuya."
he knows miyuki's scared. hell, kuramochi is too. has been for months. but he's not about to stand by and lose miyuki when he could stand by his side and fight with him, help him instead.
he's not going to take no for an answer. not when he could lose miyuki for good if he does. they'll figure something out. they always do.
