This was actually a little difficult because the replace novel/canonical account of their first meeting has Imayoshi being the ONLY person to see through Hanamiya’s good boy act so I was stuck at first how to write this. XD And then I realized - Imayoshi commenting on everyone else being fooled!
***
Afterwards, Imayoshi enjoys watching everyone recoil from Hanamiya with the scandalized outrage of sheep who did not notice the wolf in their midst.
The same people who had praised Hanamiya's honor roll status, who had spoken of how polite and gentle he was, were now the loudest voices of disapproval. They spoke of what an awful liar he was to have fooled them so, of how arrogant and contemptuous he was of his peers. He was even disrespectful towards the teachers!
Imayoshi held his tongue and did not ask what the teachers had ever done to deserve Hanamiya's respect. He smiled instead and accepted graciously the compliments thrown his way for having been suspicious of Hanamiya.
There was no such thing as a good person, Imayoshi longed to tell them. They should have known from the start that anyone who was universally loved was lying to the universe.
They would not thank him for such insight though; they would turn on him just as surely as they had turned on Hanamiya.
Imayoshi feigned modesty instead, demurring, "Oh, it was easy to see through his act, I deserve no especial credit."
Such a humble statement could not offend anyone; such a humble statement would leave them wondering why they had been stupid enough to be fooled if it was so easy to see through Hanamiya.
The flocks of giggling girls that had surrounded Hanamiya fell away, leaving him standing alone as he loped through the hallways with the effortless grace of a satiated predator. The whispers always died out when he came near, people refusing to meet his eyes or smile at him but not daring to scowl or challenge him either.
"Senpai," Hanamiya greeted Imayoshi, a dark light making his grey eyes glint like sharpened steel. He said nothing more but waited, a challenge in his expression to see if Imayoshi would still acknowledge him though the rest of the school stunned him.
Aware of the many eyes trained on them, Imayoshi smiled and reached out. He ruffled Hanamiya's hair, a flicker of pure delight shooting through him at Hanamiya's surprised scowl, and then let his hand rest on Hanamiya's shoulder. The boy's shoulder was sharp but relaxed, holding no tension despite the situation.
"Makoto-chan," Imayoshi purred, deliberately pitching his voice to be overheard. "Come, have lunch with me."
He had been the only one to see through Hanamiya and now, he would be the only tone to tame him.

First impressions are sometimes the wrong ones. Hanamiya’s had to revise his several times, the usual shortcuts of worthless or worthwhile, dividing lines that are not blurred or crossed in reality. He doesn’t make mistakes; he’s just taking more time now and fixing things, is all. Like Seto, he’d pegged as a lazy, bored asshole, most of which is actually true, but he’s got more layers. He’s more athletic than he looks, even considering his height; he likes winning. And Matsumoto, who Hanamiya had originally wanted to cut from the team; he’s more than a serviceable center. He’s willing to buy into the system; he’s willing to contribute to Hanamiya’s goals.
And, well, then there’s Imayoshi. Hanamiya’s first impression of his personality had been quite accurate, as usual. He’s got that slimeball aspect to him, the thing that says he doesn’t want to look out for anyone but himself, that says he thinks he’s so clever and bright and scheming, just because he sees through Hanamiya’s facade. It’s not like being smarter than the average middle-schooler (or middle school teacher) is anything much to be proud of, but Imayoshi seems to take some sort of perverse satisfaction in it. But that on its own is disgusting, a minor problem. Imayoshi plays basketball, despite his scrawny frame (he’s only a little bit taller than Hanamiya and yet he’s got to be several kilos lighter) and his poor vision; he looks like his eyes are closed behind his glasses he’s always squinting so hard. He can’t be much on the court, for all his scheming and strategy; maybe he'd make a half-decent manager.
Except, somehow, he is a threat. His passes are sharp and crisp, coming from a strength that shouldn’t be there given his lack of muscles. And he knows where to send them; they get there to the open man, through traffic. He can shoot, too; he can steal; he can somehow see through those closed eyes with shot vision, and it’s absolutely infuriating.
“Are you mad because you were wrong, or because I’m better than you?” Imayoshi asks.
Hanamiya grinds his teeth. “We’ll see who’s better.”
Except by the time Hanamiya is, it seems almost like Imayoshi doesn’t care; he’s still glad he’s good; he’s still a hidden explosiveness; he’s more interested in kissing Hanamiya, though. But as long as Imayoshi’s attention revolves around him, maybe it doesn’t matter.
