"OBJECTION!"
Naruko slams points aggressively across the courtroom and slams both his fists down. "Your Honor, the prosecutor is slandering my client with baseless claims!"
"OBJECTION!"
Imaizumi leans forward and slams his arm down. "Slander can only be referred to as such if the damaging statement is a lie. I have testimony which proves that the defendant was illegally distributing enhancing drugs." He clears his throat with a bit more force than necessary. "I call Mr. Sakamichi Onoda to the witness stand."
A small and rather timid looking man with large round glasses shuffles up to the stand. "Er, hello. My name is Sakamichi Onoda. I work at the front desk of the Sohoku Velodrome."
Imaizumi adjusts his cravat. "Mr. Onoda, please explain what happened on the day that you first saw the defendant."
Onoda clears his throat. "Um. It was around three months ago when I first met Mr. Midosuji.
"We usually don't do bag checks since a lot of visitors carry all of their cycling gear on them. Maybe I should've done one that day...
"It's rare for us to see new faces, especially alone since most people are introduced to the velodrome by regulars. Mr. Midosuji was alone and I don't remember him speaking to anyone for the two hours he spent there."
Naruko nods and turns to the judge. "I'd like to cross-examine the witness.
"Mr Onoda, you stated that you should have checked my client's bag. Can you elaborate as to why you said that?"
Onoda gulps. "Well, sir, when I was handing him his change after he paid the entrance fee, my hand slipped and I dropped the coins on the floor. When he leaned over, a syringe fell out of his bag."
Naruko hums consideringly. "Prosecutor, would you happen to be in possession of said syringe?"
Imaizumi sighs and shakes his head. "The defendant placed the syringe back into his bag before the witness had a chance to further examine it."
Naruko smiles triumphantly. "KA KA KA! Well then, Mr. Prosecutor, how can we say that my client was definitively smuggling drugs if the witness was unable to look at it closely? It could've been a pen, for all we know!"
The judge shakes his head and sighs. "Mr. Onoda, can you please amend your testimony?"
Onoda nods and repeats himself: "I should've checked Mr. Midosuji's bag. When he bent over, something that looked like a syringe fell out. I'm not sure if it was, though."
"HOLD IT!"
Naruko waggles his finger at the witness stand. "Therein lies the rub. Why would my client bring illicit drugs, as you imply he did, if he didn't speak to anyone at all? Why would he risk being caught if he wasn't there to pull off a supposed deal?"
Imaizumi smirks and bows. "I'm glad you asked. The locker room can't be monitored from the front desk, and it was entirely possible that the deal could have happened in there."
Naruko raises an eyebrow. "Could? Hey Mr. Hotshot Prosecutor, you're supposed to prove that something actually went down."
Imaizumi smirks again. Naruko wants to leap across the courtroom and punch that smug expression off of his slimy face. "You see,"
Oh no.
"I have..."
Please no.
"A witness."
The judge nods and calls for a ten-minute recess to prepare the mystery witness. Naruko scowls and gestures for Midosuji to follow him into their waiting room as he stomps away. Stupid hotshot always withholding evidence until the last minute.
