Prompt:
Well my daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to Ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze
Now, I don't blame him 'cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue"
Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk
It seems I had to fight my whole life through
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue"
- Shel Silverstein & Johnny Cash, "A Boy Named Sue"

"Azusa," Tajima says, and it's without a trace of mockery, but it makes Hanai's face go red all the same.
"If you say that again, I'm adding another five laps to your training regimen," Hanai threatens, but all that achieves is making Tajima laugh loudly.
"You were going to do that anyway. I heard you talking to Coach Momo about it before." Tajima grins. "That's not going to make me any bigger, you know, Azusa."
"Seriously, don't," Hanai says. "We can't give you a training regimen that's going to make you any bigger. That's just your body. But you're good at running, you know. I was thinking that maybe we could make you even better at that."
Tajima blinks at him, looking so impressed that Hanai feels his face heat for an entirely different reason this time.
"Wow, there's a really good reason you're captain, huh?" Tajima asks, giving praise so easily that it only makes Hanai even more embarrassed. "You're pretty cool, Azusa!"
"I'm going to punch you."
•
"Azusa," Tajima says, leaning over his shoulder to grab for one of his onigiri.
Hanai moves it out of reach, then stuffs it into his mouth whole.
"That's gross," Tajima says, wrinkling his nose.
Hanai chews and swallows, wiping his mouth before he says, "You're gross. Eat your own food."
Abe raises an eyebrow as Tajima walks away. "He called you Azu—"
"Don't," Hanai interrupts. "You're not allowed to use that."
"But Tajima is?" Abe asks, both eyebrows raised this time.
"He's not either," Hanai sighs. "But he's just—it's complicated, okay?"
Abe hums, unconvinced, but doesn't push any further.
•
"Azusa," Tajima says, and by their third year, Hanai is so used to hearing it that he doesn't even protest it any more. At least, not when Tajima's the one saying it.
"Yeah, Yuu?"
"Help me with my calculus homework?" Tajima asks, holding his textbook up. They're meant to be finishing their homework before baseball practice, and Hanai has plenty of his own work to get through, but he nods anyway, clearing one half of his desk so that Tajima can use it.
Tajima pulls up a chair, sitting down across from Hanai and opening to the part where he's stuck. He's about to get his pencil out of his pencil case, when his hands falter.
"You called me Yuu."
Hanai blinks. "Oh. I gess I did. Do you want me to stop?"
Tajima shakes his head. "I like it."
"Me too," Hanai says quietly. "…Calling you that, but also, when you call me Azusa. I like that too."
Tajima grins, reaching under the desk to hold onto Hanai's hand.
"Everyone can see you," Abe stage whispers, from the next desk over.
Hanai doesn't let go anyway.
