"Please don't forget that this is a demonstration for blocking, not for spiking," Tsukishima says, settling into a waiting stance as Kageyama and Hinata set up.
Hinata grins. "But to demonstrate the best block, shouldn't I give you the best spike I can? Blocking a shitty—"
"Language."
"—bad spike wouldn't help much, would it?"
Kageyama looks at him from the other side of the net and shrugs. "He's not wrong."
Tsukishima looks at them both balefully. "Just give me a spike, morons," he mutters. Louder this time, so it carries to the underclassmen stationed along the edge of the court: "Watch carefully—timing and positioning makes a difference." He nods at the duo opposite him. "Send me a few."
He gestures at Yachi, and she tosses up the first ball.
Tsukishima knocks down the first one with practiced ease.
Hinata, predictably, pouts.
"Again," he says, smiling despite himself. It never stopped feeling good.
Hinata's pout vanishes, and he reassumes his starting position. "You better be ready, Tsukishima."
Tsukishima wonders if Hinata knows it's near-impossible to ever prepare for him, if he knows that it's that precise trait that makes him both a joy and a pain to face off against.
Probably at least a little by now, he thinks.
But Tsukishima has had over two years to learn Hinata, to get in his head, to figure out how to best maximize his potential, and to know when the team's morale relied on him.
It's important for a captain to know his ace, after all, and to know his strengths—as well as his weaknesses.
Tsukishima gets a one-touch on the next one, but Hinata bests him the next.
Tsukishima flexes his hand, feeling the sting of the ball.
"Again."
Later, he'll have Hinata be the blocker (to prove a point about height—it's something Ennoshita did for the new recruits last year that Tsukishima is borrowing) and he'll just watch, taking in the flow of practice, taking note of performance as much as he can. Yamaguchi guides them from drill to drill, his patience an endless resource Tsukishima finds himself grateful for near everyday.
"Don't strain yourself," Yachi says from next to him, pen moving across her clipboard. "Your head looks like it might burst."
Tsukishima snorts. "With this team, sometimes it feels like it."
He's thinking of their senpai, of Karasuno's "rowdy" reputation, something that seems unlikely to fade anytime soon, even as new club members cycle in each year.
This year, it's Hinata at the center of it.
After practice, after Tsukishima has helped Takeda-sensei lock up, he meets Hinata outside the gym, where he's bickering with Kageyama about something. Yamaguchi stands off to the side, something like fondness just visible behind his exasperation.
Hinata stops short as he notices Tsukishima walk up, and he smiles. "Ready?"
"All set," he responds.
Hinata links his hand with his, and they start their walk to Ukai's shop, Hinata and Kageyama continuing their argument all the while.
They'll drag him in when they need a third opinion and Yamaguchi's isn't satisfactory, but for the most part he's quiet, enjoying the feel of Hinata's calloused hand in his, and the late afternoon sun on his face.
