“I thought I’d call.” Tooru stands in the hallway, facing the wall, phone pressed to his ear. It’s an old phone, with a cord that connects it to the wall, and he curls his finger in the coiled wire to give himself something to do.
He can hear familiar ambient locker room noise on the other end, boys congratulating each other and the rustle of fabric as clothes are taken off and put back on again.
“Thank you.” So many years has past, and so much has changed, and Tobio still sounds unsure when talking to him. Tooru wants to be angry, but he can’t blame him. They’ve come a long way, and they haven’t exactly taken the best road to get there.
“How was practice?” he asks quietly.
“Good. I was happy with how we did. I’m…” Tobio pauses, then says in a rush, “I’m excited for tomorrow.”
Tooru breathes in. Breathes out. “Good. That’s… good.”
There’s a pause, and Tooru can practically hear Tobio’s uncomfortable shifting before he speaks. “How about you?”
“What?”
“What are you doing tomorrow?”
Tooru grits his teeth, counting to ten in his head. Tobio’s just an idiot trying to be kind, he reminds himself. But it still feels like a slap in the face. Somehow, after so long, it still feels like Tobio is farther away from him than ever before.
I set for the national team now, Tooru. I’m going to lead them into a match. And judging by our stats, we’ll win.
What are you doing tomorrow?
“Nothing. You know. Helping my grandmother out.” The words come out a little choked. The worst part is that it’s the truth. The worst part, without any shadow of a doubt, is how Tooru doesn’t feel like he can lie to Tobio anymore. He clears his throat, rolling his shoulders back and trying to inject some pep back into his voice. “You shouldn’t be worried about me. You should be getting to bed. You have a big day tomorrow.”
“Right. I’m going. I just wanted to answer your call.” Tooru stays on the line as Tobio leaves the locker room, and Tooru thinks he could listen to him just breathe forever. “Well. I’ll talk to you soon.”
“I love you.”
He hears nothing but static. To be fair, he hangs up just a few seconds after he says it - but even those few moments of silence are too much to bear.
