‘Yuuri,’ Viktor beams, sticking out his arms, reaching for Yuuri. ‘Carry me?’
Yuuri’s face heats, mouth falling open, but his arms are faster, falling open to tuck Viktor against his side, slinging an arm carefully around Yuuri’s shoulder for balance. The dining area at Yu-topia is almost empty, only the last of the regulars finishing up conversations over a last cup of tea or sake.
Viktor hums, still beaming, breath warm over Yuuri’s jaw. He smells like alcohol and the expensive cologne he modelled for three years ago – Yuuri had stuck a magazine cutout of the photoshoot on his wall in Detroit.
The Viktor from that photoshoot had been smooth lines and endless grace, limned by several spotlights and what might’ve been a waterfall. Yuuri can’t remember anymore, only that he’d stared at Viktor’s face, cool and distantly amused, more nights than he can count.
The Viktor of today is, apparently, an affectionate drunk. Yuuri makes no move to discourage this discovery as Viktor continues to make soft, pleased noises while Yuuri helps him to his room. Viktor’s body is a steady weight against Yuuri’s side, and a swell of emotion surges up in Yuuri’s chest, ignored but not unnoticed.
‘Yuuri,’ Viktor says, drawing out the vowels of Yuuri’s name, Yu-uu-ri, peering up at Yuuri in a way that suggests it isn’t the first time he’s tried to catch Yuuri’s attention. Yuuri swallows.
Makkachin greets them when Yuuri slides the door to Viktor’s room open, tail wagging as he nuzzles into Yuuri’s side. ‘You’re a good girl,’ Yuuri tells her, lowering Viktor onto his bed. She climbs her way up the bed beside Viktor, and Yuuri smiles, tucking them both beneath the sheets.
Viktor curls up around her, cheeks red and eyes half-shut. He’s not quite asleep yet, but he doesn’t seem very far from it, either. Yuuri finds himself a little relieved; he’s not sure what he would’ve said to Viktor before leaving.
He’s not sure what Viktor would say before Yuuri stands up and moves to leave. He’s not sure he wants to know what Viktor would say before Viktor himself leaves, eventually. It’s not something Yuuri likes to think about, but it’s something he ends up thinking about often all the same. This train of thought is well-worn, following the familiar route of what will Viktor do after he’s gone?
(Yuuri has never bothered considering what he’ll do – Yuuri already knows the answer to that, wakes up every morning aware that the only difference between knowing the answer and living it is a matter of months, days.)
‘Goodnight,’ Yuuri says, standing up. He doesn’t remember sitting down next to Viktor.
Viktor catches Yuuri’s sleeve before Yuuri can leave the side of the bed.
‘Don’t,’ Viktor says, and doesn’t finish the sentence. He is very drunk. Yuuri cares for him more than he should.
‘It’s late,’ Yuuri says. Makkachin whines softly. Yuuri scratches behind her ear with his free hand. Viktor has both eyes open, sleepy but focused on Yuuri. Yuuri doesn’t look away.
‘You need to sleep,’ Yuuri reminds him. ‘Or you’ll be hungover tomorrow again.’
‘I won’t,’ Viktor insists. Then: ‘I won’t go to sleep.’
Yuuri pauses. ‘Why not –.’
‘So stay,’ Viktor says.
’Viktor.’
‘Yuuri,’ Viktor says. His hold on Yuuri’s sleeve is loose, but firm. Slowly, Yuuri uncurls Viktor’s fingers from his sleeve, and Viktor lets him.
‘What will you do if I don’t,’ Yuuri asks.
Viktor frowns. He doesn’t blink. ‘Wait for you to come back.’
And then Viktor closes his eyes again, as if he had said all he needed to say. Yuuri knows that if he leaves now, Viktor will not mention it in the morning. If he even remembers it in the morning.
Yuuri is still holding onto Viktor’s fingers. He doesn’t let go.
