Soulmate AU because sometimes I like experimenting with fucked up concepts. Warnings for self-harm (not what it sounds like) and accidental misgendering/heterosexism (or whatever the term is, I’m really tired, sorry.)
***
Soulmates share skins, or so the saying goes. Soulmates wear each other’s injuries, feel each other’s pains. A bruise on one will appear on the other.
The papers are always talking about murders caused by the meeting of soulmates and the uncovering of who the childhood abuser was. It’s a common enough story that every child knows that if they start getting lots of bruises unexpectedly, especially in their private places, they should tell someone.
Police and hospitals cross-reference soulmate injuries with reported accidents. Five or more matches are enough to confirm the identity of a pair - and to get the abuser locked away for good.
Imayoshi knows this but when the bruises start appearing on him, he doesn’t think it’s anything he needs to report. It’s all on the outside, the kind of bruises that come from falling. No finger marks, no teeth marks. Sometimes his knuckles badly and he thinks that they must’ve split punching someone. Sometimes his lip hurts and he worries it with his teeth, imagining his soulmate’s split lip.
Whoever his soulmate is, she’s a fighter.
*
He wakes one night, clutching his arm. Red welts rise over the skin, starker and sharper than anything he’s ever suffered before. The precise marks become kanji and Imayoshi stares in wonder as the name of his soulmate is revealed.
Hanamiya Makoto
Under it, in smaller letters, it says @gmail.com
It’s 3AM. His parents’ll be asleep. The sane thing to do would be to wait until morning and then ask to use the computer when he gets home from school.
He sneaks into the study instead and uses his father’s password to log on. His heart’s beating so fast he’s nearly dizzy. It could be a fake. His soulmate could have written someone else’s name there to set Imayoshi up for whatever reason. After all, if she’s Imayoshi’s soulmate, then she can’t be too nice a person either.
He really should tell someone about this. She could be a psychopath. How many people would scratch themselves just to get contact like this?
*
The e-mail he sends in the end is simple and short via a brand new e-mail address:
’m going to cut myself. You have to take a photo of where it shows up on you to prove you’re my soulmate.
He has to stand on a little stool to get the kitchen drawer open but he finds the fish fillet knife easily. It hurts to poke the tip of the knife into the inside of his left thigh, just above his knee, but he pushes as hard as he can until he draws blood.
By the time he’s made it back to the study, there’s a new e-mail waiting for him. It shows a skinny little thigh with a red, raised welt on the exact right spot and has the text, “Believe me now?”
There’s a second photo attached - this one is of a little forearm with the kanji and email address carved into the flesh.
His soulmate looks small. His age or smaller. Imayoshi thinks of how brave she must be to have cut her arm like that and feels, for the first time, a sudden rush of fondness to this stranger whose life is linked to his.

laughs maniacally
Thank you for the fill! I can't get enough of it - kinda want to see their reactions when they finally meet!
