Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

***

More people liked Viktor better after Yuuri happened to him. Which isn’t to say that people liked Viktor less before; only that, now, their combined presence of Viktor-and-Yuuri rendered Viktor in a light that seemed more approachable, felt more within reach.

“I love him,” Viktor texted Chris once. This was before Beijing, and Chris suspects Viktor had not been as sober as he should have. There was nothing else in the message, neither precursor nor afterthought: only Viktor, and Viktor’s love. Chris didn’t reply, and deleted the message shortly afterwards.

Neither of them mentioned the message at Beijing, or Barcelona, or any time since.

And yet, it remained. With Yuuri came the curious, subtle shift of closeness–or a perceived heightened sense of it–when it came to Viktor that was, is, no more or less true than it had been in all the years Chris has known Viktor.

I love him, Chris thinks, watching Viktor watch Yuuri answer an interviewer at the following season’s Autumn Classic. Viktor catches Chris’ eye and waves, walking over. Chris waves back, smile breaking into a grin as he slides his gaze and catches Yuuri’s eyes, wide but impossibly patient as he answers question after question.

Yuuri’s lip twitches up as he looks at Chris in a resigned sort of amusement, and Chris salutes with two fingers, catching the interviewer’s pause mid-question at Yuuri’s sudden, snorting laughter.

“My Yuuri is very kind, is he not,” Viktor says by way of greeting.

Chris glances at him. “One only hopes it is infectious, yes?”

Now Viktor is laughing, too. “I don’t suppose you would complain, Chris.”

“Never, mon cher,” Chris says. He crosses his fingers in front of Viktor and raises his eyebrows.

“Making a wish, Chris?” Yuuri, now. Chris wonders if Viktor noticed when Yuuri’s interview finished.

“Only for your flawless complexion, Yuuri,” Chris replies, solemn. Yuuri’s face heats, a hand moving to tuck away flyaway hairs Chris can’t see. Chris sighs, a not-quite-laugh, and rests a hand on Yuuri’s shoulder, a friendly pat that forgot to move away.

Viktor leans his head on Yuuri’s other shoulder. “Agreed,” he says, and Yuuri sputters, “But your skin is perfect–

The moment between the three of them is a simple one, a casual one; memorable in its lack of any defining weight, the lightbulb realisation or recognition that yes, this is it. If there exists such a thing as the currency of tenderness, or intimacy, Chris decides it must exist in these moments, in the kindness of what’s left unspoken, unrealised but not cast aside.

I love him: fact or recollection?

Chris meets Yuuri before he ever dreams of forging a friendship with Viktor. Yuuri is only two years younger, the quiet, skittish darling of the Juniors. Only the first half of descriptors is true as far as Yuuri believed, however, and Chris remembered looking at him, at this soft boy with bright, steady eyes gesturing at himself and saying “What you see is what you get, I suppose,” and thinking No, absolutely not.

Then, later: And even if it were true, there’s not a single thing about you to feel shame over.

The sentiment that lingers, long after Chris forgets thinking of it. The sentiment stays.

Viktor retires after another season back in the competitive circuit. He takes Yuuri on an extended holiday in celebration, a honeymoon-that-isn’t, Chris following their progress around the world from Instagram. He texts Viktor. He sends Yuuri hideous but endearing photos of his cat.

He doesn’t expect them to finish their holiday around the world in Lausanne, right at Chris’ doorstep.

“Sur-prise,” Viktor and Yuuri sing at him, red-cheeked, cheery.

Chris swallows once, twice, before answering. “Always a surprise, with you two.”

When Chris is twenty seven, he and Yuuri are assigned the Cup of China together again. Yuuri holds himself more solidly this time around, but remains unchanged in every other aspect. Chris touches his cheek to Yuuri’s in greeting, then Viktor’s, before Viktor is drawn into conversation with another coach, leaving Chris and Yuuri to step away, warm up.

“You look well,” Yuuri tells him, bending into a stretch. “I’m glad.”

“I’m getting old,” Chris counters, smiling to soften it.

“Still.”

Chris dips into a stretch of his own, murmuring a thank-you when Yuuri leans over to help him hold it. “You’re very kind, Yuuri.” He is: Yuuri isn’t one for flattery, giving or receiving, and Yuuri is at once too self-conscious yet unaware to say anything less than what he really means.

Yuuri shrugs; Chris feels it before he loosens up his hold to let Chris sit up again. “Perhaps it’s that we are too harsh on ourselves, then.”

Chris blinks, glancing back at Yuuri. Yuuri doesn’t notice, shifting into another stretch as Viktor appears behind them, two bottles of water in hand.

“Chris,” Viktor smiles, handing him one of the bottles. “It’s been too long.”

“It has,” he agrees. It is Chris’ last season; he hasn’t decided when he is going to tell them, or if.

When Chris looks up at Viktor, he catches something in Viktor fall away, in the set of his shoulders or the curl of his mouth. He only gets better at reading Viktor as time passes. Perhaps Viktor is getting better at letting himself be read.

Viktor doesn’t say anything, touching the cool, condensation-wet water bottle to Yuuri’s cheek when Yuuri sits up, turning to look at both of them.

“Thank you,” Yuuri says.

Chris is watching very carefully. He doesn’t see any difference in Viktor’s expression when he turns from Chris to Yuuri.

The competition ends. Another one begins. Chris retires after Viktor.

So it goes.

I love him, reads a message Chris received, once.

Yuuri still competes. He outlasted all of them, in the end; Chris feels nothing but proud of him, now.

A buzz from his phone. Chris fishes it from his pocket.

It’s from Yuuri’s number, but Chris recognises Viktor’s hand behind the message.

It’s not the same without you here, the message reads, But we’re thinking of you, all the same.

Attached is a picture: Yuuri is cradling a bouquet of flowers from the podium. His hand is covering his mouth, but Chris knows the shine in Yuuri’s eyes, the pink in his cheeks; he knows Yuuri is mimicking Chris’ blown kiss to the crowd, even if he and Viktor are the only ones to see it.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THIS IS WONDERFUL!!!!! I'M SWOONING!!

My heart absolutely broke for Christophe in the first part of the story, ngl; the idea of him receiving this text message and getting this glimpse into what he could have but also doesn't have is just... UGH (and the linked song definitely made things worse!!)

I love that there's this vague sense throughout that Christophe is in love with one or both of them and it's not quite a fully formed thought, because emotions often aren't and especially not when they're going to be painful for the person stuck feeling them. But I also love that it seems like Yuuri and Viktor continue to include him in little ways, like Viktor coming over with two water bottles, making him the last stop on their 'honeymoon', never making him an outsider, it's just. UGH. I REALLY LOVE THIS. I'm running out of ways to articulate it but this piece is so emotional and wonderful and everything I wanted with this prompt, so thank you!!! ♥♥♥

i'm so glad you enjoyed <3 i rly like the idea that chris is on good terms with viktor & yuuri, but each in different ways, so. i wanted to try writing (pre-)poly where chris is beginning to realise he loves them, but not which one (both, chris, it's definitely both of them).

i have a sort of secret weakness for viktor/yuuri/chris so thanks for giving me a chance to try writing them!!!

All of those are headcanons I agree with too, so I just really, truly love everything you've written. I hope that if you ever write more, you let me know!
