Ushijima has never been foolish enough to assume it would always be smooth sailing with Oikawa. Even if they take their tumultuous beginnings aside, the clash in their personalities cannot be so easily ignored. Ushijima is too oblivious, Oikawa too nebulous, and they are similar in the worst ways, both so stubborn that a compromise seems about as possible as grasping the moon. Conflicts are to be expected, and even necessary, sometimes, preferable to one of them always backing down to accommodate the other, but they no longer seem so necessary to Ushijima the night Oikawa slams the door behind him, the tension in the room subsiding only because he isn't there to sustain it.
It is not the first time one of their fights culminated in loud, decisive noises, in voices that might be less incisive were they raised instead of clipped and sharpened to points; it is not the first time that Oikawa has chosen to leave instead of resolving it right there and then, however Ushijima wishes each time would be the last.
The difference, this time, is that he does not return. Ushijima waits until midnight, and then well into morning, until it becomes evident that Oikawa wouldn't be wandering the streets at that hour anymore.
Oikawa doesn't come back, and Ushijima's heart is anchored to his stomach, because he does not know how long it will last (or if it will last, point blank.)
They cannot avoid each other forever, however; they attend the same university, and are members of the same club. What does return instead of Oikawa is the tension between them, palpable even if Oikawa is a master at pretenses. Oikawa tosses to him at practice and Ushijima scores, but it feels as hollow as the bounce of the volleyball against the linoleum floor.
Ushijima is not as skilled as reading the emotions of others as Oikawa is, but he can tell that their teammates want to ask about it, even if none of them quite manage to. He knows that much, and he shares the sentiment himself.
Oikawa does not wish to speak to him, so Ushijima will honor that wish. Even if it means that his insides twist each he sees Oikawa talking to other people with an ease that no longer applies to him; even if it means that his fists curl when Oikawa bypasses their usual cafeteria table to sit somewhere else.
Even if it means almost dialing Oikawa's number when he receives good news from home; even if it means he must force himself not to, no matter how difficult it is when he stares at Oikawa's contact photo on his phone.
Even if it means accepting that when Oikawa finally shows up outside his apartment again, it must be to collect his things.
"Ushiwaka-chan," says Oikawa, a greeting, or a goodbye, as good as any. Ushijima swallows and tries not to let it show, desperate to get all the important words out before he runs out of time.
"Oikawa, before you go, I must tell you—"
"'Go?'" echoes Oikawa. "Do you want me to go?"
"No," says Ushijima, quicker and with more forceful than his best recorded spike. "No, that's the last thing I want."
"Oh, well." Oikawa eyes finds his, and linger. "Same here." Tension lingers in the air like all those times before, but unlike all those other times, it feels like a chance to begin again. "Can I come in?"
Were the door made of flesh and bone, Ushijima's grip on it would leave a bruise.
"Yes," he breathes, his heart freed from its weights. "Yes, always."

this destroyed me
ushi's pain was so palpable through this i wanted to get through my screen and hold him close ; -; im glad oikawa came back aaaa im so weak for breakup/makeup or well, any kind of makeup stories im soglad u wrote this thank u ; -;
