HUNGER GAMES AU. Mentions of death, kids being made to fight, mostly an Imayoshi-Mei piece actually! ImaHana is only implied.
***
“Can’t sleep or running over last minute plans?” The voice comes from behind and Mei turns automatically, fingers closing over the bun he’d stolen from the dinner table. It won’t make much of a weapon but it’ll be a distraction at least.
The Games haven’t even started yet and he’s already paranoid.
It’s only his Mentor so he relaxes and folds his arms over the balcony railing instead, looking down at the gleaming blue pool.
“How do you keep Tributes from killing themselves by jumping?” He asks instead of answering Imayoshi’s question. “There’ve got to be some cases that know they can’t win and a death out here’ll be quicker.”
“You mean the ones who are so hopeless that they’ll just give up when the cannon sounds?” Imayoshi’s eyes glint behind his glasses as he strolls up next to Mei. The collar of his robe is just slightly ajar, barely enough to hint at a lovebite against that pale skin. “They receive a little talk about District Pride and how if they die, a replacement will be drawn from their village. Most people who want to die aren’t selfish enough to make a second person die as well.”
His teeth flash in a smile that looks very white in the gathering gloom. “Strangely enough, they’re often the ones that ‘accidentally’ step off their pedestals too early.”
They couldn’t get out of taking part in the Games but they could at least make sure that nobody from another District had to kill them (or in the case of the Careers, got the credit for their kill).
Mei nods, folding his arms over the railing again and turning his attention back to the pool.
“I’m not going to do that,” He says, dark and supremely confident. “I’ll turn all their dreams to dust. Even the Careers.”
“Indeed?” Imayoshi’s laugh is amused but not dismissive. “It’s possible. It’s been too long since Three has had a winner.”
“Besides you,” Mei points out.
Imayoshi’s mouth twists into something that’s not quite a smile. “Besides me.”
Something’s wrong with Imayoshi; his reactions are off, a secret hiding behind his teeth like a slippery wet heart. Mei shifts a little to the side, putting more space between him and his Mentor.
“Any last minute advice?” He asks, drumming his fingers against the railing.
“Take out the smart ones first,” Imayoshi says, too reflexive to have thought about his response.
But I’m the only smart one, Mei nearly protests before he understands.

“Take out the smart ones first,” Imayoshi says, too reflexive to have thought about his response. This sentence. I want to shake my hands at this sentence, because its timing speaks volumes of history that ties in so well with the hints you place earlier (hint of a lovebite, off reactions). Your fills always have a sense of a completion to them, as though there is so much more, but we're peeking at it through a spyhole and there is more than enough for us to understand the gravitas of the scene.
Thank you for sharing!
Re: FILL: TEAM PRINCE OF TENNIS, T
MEI IS PRETTY MUCH MY FAVORITE FROM DNA. He and Miyuki are the only two that I can actually write, to be honest, but Mei is definitely my favorite and the idea of pulling an indirect compare-contrast with him and Imayoshi was irresistible.
I am SO GLAD that you picked up on the hints about love bites/off reactions since this does actually belong to a string of Hunger Games AUs I wrote for Imayoshi/Hanamiya and fits in that universe. I love thinking about the details of universes, even if I don't get a chance to use/show all of them, so you saying that ti actually COMES THROUGH as being just a tiny slice of a larger poisoned pie is thrilling. :D
And yes. Imayoshi can't, won't, tell Mei what happens to Victors or why Mei shouldn't want to win.
He gives Mei the best advice he can and hopes that Mei understands (and hopes, even harder, that Mei will follow it).
