SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES

Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
- Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
- The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
- Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

SCORING

These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

so i haven't actually read tsoa yet, or the iliad, but i really fuckin love achilles and patroclus and ancient greece in general so...? have an ambiguous ancient greek au?

"Stupid fucking sword...."

Otabek looked up at the sound of Yuri's sword and whetstone clattering into the dirt. There was a small stream of blood running down his finger where the sword bit into the flesh.

"Do you want to use my whetstone instead?" Otabek asked, setting down his own sword.

Yuri shook his head sharply. "It's not the whetstone."

They were camped for the evening on a hill overlooking the valley below—an easily defensible position, if the enemy was to attack. Not that they would. Gods willing they wouldn't have to face the them until they laid siege to the citadel itself. Still, Otabek felt on high alert, his body taught like a bow string.

Yuri was still staring balefully at his sword when Otabek got to his feet. "Here. Let me," he said. He knelt to the ground and retrieved Yuri's weapon.

"You don't have to baby me, I know how to sharpen a goddamn sword. I'm not five."

"I know," Otabek replied, "but you're distracted."

"I'm not."

The lie was too weak for Otabek to bother pointing it out.

He sat next to Yuri and got to work running the edge of the blade over the smooth surface of the whetstone. They were silent, no noise between them aside from the metallic drag of the sword on stone. Yuri's eyes lingered as he worked, watching his hands. He'd called Yuri distracted, but honestly, Otabek was no better. The heat of Yuri's gaze kept dividing his attention, and didn't that make Otabek the worst kind of hypocrite?

No, not a hypocrite, but a liar, maybe. He'd rather spill his own blood than Yuri's. A demigod's blood would always be more precious.

"There," Otabek said quietly when he was finished, testing the edge of the blade with the pad of his thumb. "Better."

"Good. Now I can nick myself even easier..." Yuri muttered. He took back his sword from Otabek's waiting hand and ran his finger over the flat side of the sword.

"A sharper sword is safer, you know," Otabek said. "Cleaner cuts."

"You know what else is safer?" Yuri glanced up at him through his lashes. "Not going to war."

Otabek let out a huff of a laugh and stood, holding out his hand to help Yuri to his feet. Yuri ignored the hand and stood on his own. He always did that.

"We should rest," Otabek said. "It's almost nightfall."

Yuri shrugged, then fixed him with a heavy look. His eyes flicked down to Otabek's hands again and he bit his lip. "We'll rest tomorrow."

Gods. Otabek never had been able to tell him no.

As they walked back through the camp to their tent, passing soldiers and weapons and horses and shields, he prayed to every god and goddess he could think of that it would be enough. No matter how strong Yuri looked walking ahead of him, no matter how fearless, Otabek knew better than most how deep his human roots ran. Yuri was not invincible.

But the war wasn't here, not in this camp, not yet. They had time. When the war did come, they would fight—for better or for worse.

I'M YELLING I'M SO GLAD I GOT A FILL FOR THIS ONE AND WHAT A FILL

This quote could have gone so many ways but I am so thrilled that you took it literally in the spirit of TSoA... I love the setting here, and how you sketch it out with all these vivid details: the sound of sword and whetstone clattering in the dirt, that image of their camp on a hill overlooking the valley, Otabek's body like a bowstring. I love what you've done with their characters here, Yuri impatient and tempestuous but so magnetic, and Otabek, knowing Yuri is not invincible, praying for his safety. This AU makes me ten thousand kinds of emotional and with these two, even more so. Thank you for this beautiful fill <3
