Bonus Round 5: Clue

Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
    • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
    • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.
    • The "item" used must be a physical object that the character can hold or manipulate.
    • Unlike the board game, your prompt is NOT required to imply murder. The scenario implied can be anything at all! (As always, please tag properly!)
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your Clue-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

Warnings for illness, angst, possible future death.

“Hey. Shittykawa, wake up.” Iwaizumi poked Oikawa’s cheek, albeit much more gently than usual. The pallor of his friend worried him almost as much as the numerous machines whose soft beeps and green lines offered proof that Oikawa was still alive.

Oikawa’s eyes opened slowly, the chocolate brown of his eyes dark with drowsiness and a little hazy still. “...Iwa-chan?”

His gaze drifted from Iwaizumi’s face to the cluster of brilliant helium balloons that Iwaizumi was holding and slowly, a smile spread over his face.

“You brought me balloons?” He asked, tapping the remote for the bed to make him sit up a little. Having to stare up at his visitors all the time very quickly had become more humiliating than Oikawa could bear, even if sitting up exhausted him so much that the visits had to be cut short.

“Of course not,” Iwaizumi snorted as he started to tie the balloons to the arm of the chair so they’d be on eye-level with Oikawa. “They’re gifts from the whole team.”

“Oh, I see.” Oikawa’s smile didn’t look disappointed in the least, Iwaizumi noted. “Much better than all the flowers that my fans sent. The nurse wouldn’t let me keep them.”

“I know,” Iwaizumi said gruffly as he pushed the balloons down so Oikawa could see them more clearly. “I asked what sort of presents you would be allowed - no food, no flowers, no soaps that might contain irritants.”

Oikawa hugged a dog balloon to his chest and Iwaizumi said, “That one’s from Kentaro. The string’s slippery - it kept trying to get away.”

“Just like him,” Oikawa said, letting go and eyeing a pink teddy bear instead. “Which one is yours, Iwa-chan?”

“...” Silently, trying to scowl in his usual manner, Iwaizumi pulled down a red heart with GET WELL SOON written in silver letters and passed it to Oikawa.

“How sweet,” Oikawa cooed with a faint shiver of a laugh. “You’re giving me your heart.”

“I’d give you a lung for real if I could,” Iwaizumi muttered gruffly, stuffing his hands into his pockets. They weren’t even a blood type match, let alone close enough for organ transplants; a stupid helium balloon heart was the best that he could do.

Oikawa nuzzled his cheek against the balloon and smiled up at Iwaizumi even as the edges of strain started to appear at the corners of his mouth and eyes.

“I’d rather have your heart, Iwa-chan,” he said quietly, arms wrapped around it. “This doesn’t hurt you to give.”

Stupid, Iwaizumi nearly said, stopping himself just in time. What did Oikawa think it would do to Iwaizumi if he didn’t get better?

pets you gently Thank you for prompting this. Out of respect for your tender heart, I won't tell you imagine a funeral where each of the teammates releases a balloon painted to look like a volleyball into the sky.

But yeah, this hurt to write. Oikawa's just so exhausted and trying so hard to be himself anyway.

Oikawa doesn't want to talk.

Fair enough, Iwaizumi thinks, as he sits in the chair beside his bed. He's probably scared. He probably doesn't know exactly what this is going to mean for himself, for the team, for the future. Iwaizumi doesn't know what to say either but he's known Oikawa for long enough that he doesn't have to say anything at all. He just needs to sit there, and pretend not to see the tears silently streaming from the corners of Oikawa's eyes.

It's Oikawa who breaks the silence in the end. He clears his through and says, "Yahaba-kun's balloon is the biggest."

Iwaizumi looks up at the balloons taking up space in the corner of Oikawa's hospital room, and it's true. The entire team have written get-well messages and stuck them to their balloons. Yahaba's is the biggest balloon, with the longest note.

"He feels guilty," Oikawa says. "Probably. This isn't how he wanted to become the main setter for the team."

"He isn't main setter yet," Iwaizumi mutters.

Oikawa gives him an unimpressed look. "I can't put weight on my leg or I'll collapse, not just because I can't hold myself up, but because of the pain. Are you expecting me to walk out onto the court in our next game? Be realistic."

Iwaizumi flinches at his tone, and Oikawa notices, his expression softening, along with his voice.

"I'm sorry, Iwa-chan," he mutters, looking down at his hands. His fingers are linked with each other, thumbs and pinkies moving restlessly as they sit in his lap. "I don't know what I'm going to do."

"You're going to get better, obviously," Iwaizumi huffs. He reaches out, pulling Oikawa's hands apart and taking one into his, squeezing gently. "I'm not expecting you to magically get better. You're not going to be the same as you were before. It's going to take time to recover from a muscle tear, but you're not going to stop here. I know that. You know that."

Oikawa doesn't reply, his gaze fixed on their joined hands. Iwaizumi tugs gently to make him look up, and gets up from the chair, sitting on the edge of Oikawa's bed so they can hold hands more comfortably.

With a quiet, broken noise, Oikawa tucks himself against Iwaizumi, face pressed against his shoulder. Iwaizumi can feel his entire body shaking as Oikawa cries, and he presses a kiss onto his soft hair, squeezing his hand tighter.

"I'll be right here while you're recovering. I'll take good care of our team until you're back. And I know you will be."

"How do you know that?" Oikawa asks, muffled against Iwaizumi's shoulder.

"I believe in you," Iwaizumi replies, kissing Oikawa's forehead this time. "I always will."

"Promise me, Iwa-chan. Promise me you'll take care of the team when I'm gone." Oikawa's voice is muffled by the hospital blankets pulled right up to the top of his head, and also possibly an absolute metric fuckton of painkillers.

"You're not gonna die, dumbass," Iwaizumi grumbles back. He watches as Oikawa's stupid little hair thingie bobs in disagreement -- he's not sure what's more mesmerising, the fact that he can read Oikawa this easily just by his shitty over-gelled hair, or that he finds the entire stupid look kinda cute. He watches the hair thingie continue to flop around in utter despair and wonders what Oikawa would say if he tried to touch it, but that's probably one of the things that got them into this mess in the first place. "I wouldn't let you die on me, you know," Iwaizumi adds under his breath.

"I heard you!" Oikawa yells as he flips the covers off his face. "Iwa-chan does care!"

"Of course I do," Iwaizumi replies. He looks away and tries to stare at the cheery balloons the team had sent along with him; he hadn't tied them too carefully, and they had slipped from the sloppy bow he had tied them with to the railing of Oikawa's bed. Green and blue, to match the team colours. Iwaizumi idly wonders how much Hanamaki and Matsukawa know; he’s pretty sure they had seen Oikawa with his hands under Iwaizumi's shirt behind the gym about two weeks ago. Iwaizumi was actually mildly surprised that the two hadn't sent a Congratulations on the Sex card or something.

"How much do you care, Iwa-chan." Oikawa's eyes are a little manic in his high and there's the brightness of a bad idea in them.

"I wouldn't," Iwaizumi starts, "you know. If I didn't." He feels heat rise in his cheeks and kinda hates himself.

"You can say jerk off, you know," Oikawa adopts a deeply serious voice. "We're both men here. It's nothing to be ashamed of, Iwa-chan. You don't have to feel insecure when you're talking to Oikawa-san."

"Fuck off, Shittykawa," Iwaizumi says easily, but he's already stood up from the chair from beside Oikawa's bed to help tuck the blanket that had started to slip down the side. "So, uh, what did you tell the team."

"That clumsy brutish Iwa-chan slipped on a volleyball, of course," Oikawa smiles. He's trying to look guileless, but even on the best of days, Oikawa can't help the knife's edge of his mouth. "And now their poor, beloved captain who was the victim of all that gorilla weight falling on him, requires bed rest for at least a week so that his strained hip can heal."

"Oh, then I'm definitely gonna tell them you--"

"Don't you dare," Oikawa cuts in but it’s far too late.

“--fell on my dick,” Iwaizumi finishes, just as Matsukawa and Hanamaki walk into the room with gift milk bread, and Oikawa’s wail is almost loud enough to drown out their raucous laughter as they highfive each other.
