Bonus Round 5: Clue

Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
    • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
    • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.
    • The "item" used must be a physical object that the character can hold or manipulate.
    • Unlike the board game, your prompt is NOT required to imply murder. The scenario implied can be anything at all! (As always, please tag properly!)
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your Clue-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

I actually went through all 9 pages of prompts that were already up and I was kind of amazed that someone didn't beat me to it. I know it's a little obvious, but like... the IwaOi feeeeeeeels.

ANGST. Like, a lot of angst. Separating from my best friends for college sucked.

***

“...I got in,” Oikawa says unnecessarily. The packet’s so thick that it’s clear he was accepted. Rejection letters don’t come with all the necessary information on dorms, schedules and what to pack. The moment that Iwaizumi saw it, he knew.

“Congratulations,” Iwaizumi says but his tone is flat and he can’t bring himself to use one of Oikawa’s nicknames. He knows what it means that Oikawa got his acceptance letter before Iwaizumi despite coming later in the alphabet.

He knows their close friendship, their plans to share a dorm, will end here.

“Maybe you’re on the waiting list,” Oikawa says. His family had asked why he didn’t look happier to get his letter; his face had been so downcast at first that they’d thought he was rejected.

He can’t not go. It’s the best college in Japan. He can’t turn it down and go to a lesser college just to be with Iwaizumi.

He can’t but he wants to so badly that if his entire family hadn’t been at the breakfast table when the mail arrived, he might’ve just hidden it and claimed he’d been rejected.

Now they know, there’s no way to change his future. He’s going to one college.

Iwaizumi’s going to have to go to another, no matter what Oikawa says about waiting lists.

“Probably not,” Iwaizumi says with a shrug, as casual and fake as the smile on his lips. “But hey. Congratulations. Really. I mean it.”

He doesn’t. He doesn’t mean it at all and it would hurt if he did, but Oikawa can’t do anything for him now except smile back and pretend to believe him. He clasps Iwaizumi’s shoulder and squeezes, tilting his head back a little to slant Iwaizumi a smile.

“Get into a college near me. We’ll rent an apartment together. Staying in dorms sucks anyway.” Oikawa’s already adjusting his plans, already thinking of the cost of renting an apartment and transport to the college.

“And where are we going to get the money from?” Iwaizumi asks practically. Their parents are willing to pay for college. For an apartment when dorms are cheaper and safer? No.

“We’ll think of something,” Oikawa says. He makes himself smile, hopes the brightness in his eyes will be mistaken for hope. “I’m the setter, right? I’ll set it all up and it’ll be perfect as always.”

Iwaizumi’s smile is gone and the pity in his eyes is as final as a guillotine’s blade.

The death of Oikawa’s dreams came in a beige envelope and weighed less than a volleyball.

Gah!!! The feels - I feel like I was thrown back to when I was waiting for college admissions letters in the mail. I absolutely love how you write the two of them and their relationship with each other. My favorite, favorite part is the last two lines - I love how each one of them get one of the lines and the word choice and cadence is perfect! Thank you so much for filling my prompt!!!
