Bonus Round 5: Clue

Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
    • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
    • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.
    • The "item" used must be a physical object that the character can hold or manipulate.
    • Unlike the board game, your prompt is NOT required to imply murder. The scenario implied can be anything at all! (As always, please tag properly!)
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your Clue-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

The night is still young, but Tatsuya's out of time, sprinting down staircases in glass slippers that are more fragile than his ego.

He's a fool, he thinks. A fool to think he could ever belong here. A fool to forget that the only reason he was allowed here at all was thanks to the deceit of magic. He trips as he runs, stumbling down the last few steps and landing hard on the ground just in front of his coach.

The enchanted coachmen help him up and into the coach so that they can leave, Tatsuya's glamour falling apart as they race away from the castle. He allows himself one last look backwards, where he can see Atsushi standing there at the bottom of the stairs. He gave chase, Tatsuya realises, his heart pounding. He didn't want Tatsuya to leave.

There's a glint of something in Atsushi's hand and Tatsuya realises that he's lost one of his glass slippers. He gingerly takes off the other, wincing as it cracks in his hand, falling to pieces. He doesn't even have this as a memento of the night he shared with Atsushi, their arms around each other, their sense of humour perfectly matched, their mutual attraction hanging in the air. Perhaps the shoe Atsushi has will remain. It doesn't matter, when there's no longer a match to it, anywhere in the world.

By the time he gets home, he wants to smash the glass slipper in his hand until it's nothing more than dust and his hands are bleeding from its sharp edges. He's a fool, forever wanting more than he can have. Atsushi is so far out of his reach that there's no point in even pining for him. Tatsuya had only gone for the experience of attending a party, after all. He was never meant to speak to Atsushi in the first place. He's better off dismissing the entire night as a dream.

Except the next day, he hears that the prince is searching for a mystery guest from last night. It sends a ripple of curiosity through the kingdom; it's unheard of for the prince to care about anything enough to take action like this. It's also unheard of for the prince to be interested in a person enough to have spent the entire night with them as he had last night. The entire kingdom is curious.

Tatsuya looks at the broken slipper he's hidden away in a box, and wonders if it's worth piecing it back together after all.

He’d fucked it up. Royally, so to speak, if Tatsuya’s in that kind of mood, which he really, really, isn’t. The story always goes like this, the beautiful princess in the pumpkin carriage with the matching glass slipper—except he’d stumbled and fallen in his haste (dancing in glass is hard enough, but running, his fault he’d stayed too damn long) and now the matching slipper is shards in his hand. There are shallow cuts in his palm; they’ll sting when he has to clean tomorrow. He deserves it, for fucking this up, his one chance, the prince smiling so softly at the man he’d thought was so beautiful in splendor, the man who now wears rags and has no way of getting home.

The mouse-horses have scampered off, probably food for some cat or wild animal; his feet are bare but his soles are tough. He’d made it to the shadows; the prince is probably standing at the top, waiting to be whisked away by some other beautiful person, his momentary preoccupation with the almost fairy tale broken. Perhaps he’ll see this as a rude prank, a twist. Keep the glass slipper as a lark, when Tatsuya’s smashed this one to dust.

“Excuse me?”

Fuck. The prince. Crown prince Shuuzou (Shuu, he’d let Tatsuya call him that, Tatsuya had let himself be that bold), acting as regent in his ill father’s place; this is his night of fun, to choose a suitable spouse, the child of a potential ally, someone powerful. He shouldn’t have followed; where are his bodyguards?

“You tripped; I thought you might be hurt.”

Tatsuya turns; it’s obvious now he’s dressed in rags, his feet are bare, his hand is bleeding; he looks every bit the part of pathetic street urchin.

“Your hand!”

“It’s nothing,” says Tatsuya. “Please, I’ll never get home in time. I’m needed there.”

Shuu looks him up and down, and then nods. “Okay. I’ll take you back.”

“From your own party.” Tatsuya lets the skepticism fall from his lips; he might as well mouth off to royalty while he’s at it.

“Not my scene anyway,” says Shuu. “I’ll fix your hand, lend you a pair of shoes—hey, that sounds. Ugh.”

Shuu runs his hand through his hair, and then looks at Tatsuya again. It’s like they’re back under the lights, and Tatsuya’s wearing gorgeous clothes, and he’s not cut up and covered in glass and pumpkin seeds.

“Please let me take you home?”

(He’ll see; he’ll know—he already knows, though; if they get back quick they’ll get there before Tatsuya’s missed.)

Tatsuya nods.
