Bonus Round 5: Clue

Clue

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Sometimes, all you need are a few little details to imagine something bigger. This round is inspired by a classic board game with a cast of colorful characters, but for SASO your only limits on "who", "where", and "with what" are what you can imagine (and the SASO fandom list, of course)!

This round closes on 5 August @ 7PM EDT. (Countdown Timer.)

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with the format of a Clue mystery - "[character] in the [location] with [item]", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: Sawamura Daichi in the teachers' lounge with the Hello Kitty! lunchbox
    • The person in your prompt MAY be a member of your ship, but is not REQUIRED to be part of your ship. They must still be a named character from a SASO-nominated fandom.
    • Your place must be a physical location, not a state of being or a state of being. However, this location is not required to be real, nor must it be from the same setting as the characters.
    • The "item" used must be a physical object that the character can hold or manipulate.
    • Unlike the board game, your prompt is NOT required to imply murder. The scenario implied can be anything at all! (As always, please tag properly!)
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your Clue-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

He sees the jacket sitting there in the locker rooms when they first walk in upon arriving at the gymnasium for Nationals. It's clearly out of place, a bright white and pale blue against the lockers and the wooden benches. He picks it up, holding it with both hands, and reads the back of the jacket.

Rakuzan, it reads, and he recognises the name. It's a school known for its excellence at sports, particularly basketball. They don't have a volleyball team, so they won't be here at Nationals. It must have been left behind by a member of one of their other teams, who was here for another event before the volleyball nationals.

He checks the insides of it, in case its owner has left a tag with their name. Instead, he finds it embroidered onto the inside of the jacket: Akashi Seijuurou.

"Well, then," Kita mutters to himself, folding the jacket up and placing it on top of his bag. Rakuzan is a Kyoto school; if the Rakuzan players have already gone home, it will be easier for Kita to get the jacket back to Akashi from home, rather than from here in the city.

"Hey, should you really go picking up other people's things?" Atsumu asks, resting his arm on Kita's shoulder. "A stranger's, no less. You never know what you'll pick up from there."

"That's not how touch empaths work, Miya," Kita replies, shaking his head. "Whoever this guy is, he'd need to have some real hang ups about his sport if I can feel any of his thoughts through his jacket."

"Okay," Atsumu replies, giving the jacket a critical look. "Just be careful."

It takes five minutes before Kita is hit with feelings that don't belong to him. It starts as it always does, as a headache at the back of his mind, that resolves itself into something that he can make more sense of; not quite distinct thoughts or memories, but a vague mixture that pulls Kita out of his mind and into someone else's.

He's standing on a basketball court, with nobody else around, a ball held in his hands. It should feel strange, when it's nothing like the volleyballs that Kita is used to handling, but it feels perfectly at home here. He feels perfectly at home, and that's the thought that keeps running through his mind: home, safe, home, safe, home

"Captain," Atsumu says, and his voice is a little harder this time. "I thought we just talked about this."

"Uh." Kita blinks, and he's back in the present. He has his hands balled into fists so tightly that his nails are biting into his palms. He opens his hands, flexing his fingers. "Right."

"I'm gonna tell the coach," Atsumu mutters. "Just leave it to us, yeah? It's not good for you to be playing like this. You can come out onto the court when you're feeling like yourself again."

Kita wants to argue but he knows better than to try. Atsumu's right. Part of his mind is still stuck somewhere else, in an empty basketball court.

Home, comes the stray thought again, and Kita makes a mental note to find this Akashi Seijuurou as soon as possible. For curiosity's sake.

AHHHH THIS CONCEPT IS JUST??!!! ALSO SOMETHING ELSE FEELING WHAT AKASHI IS FEELING IS AHHHHH

(bc Akashi has so much feelings deep down but is too proud to say? So to have an empath in the scene is really therapeutic and thrilling. Also! That person as Kita, another captain, of another sport -- there's a good sense of distance but also camaraderie in a shared experience. I love this concept.)

(AND NAGGY!ATSUMU!! I'm burning)

ty for writing!!!

hi mandy

***

A jacket. Found in changing rooms. White with blue accents at the collar and sleeves, black stripe running down the sleeves, Rakuzan printed on the back in letters, and above the breast in kanji.

A beginning, a strange meeting and an unlikely friendship. Akashi is nothing like he imagines, though they are both of a similar height. Kita thinks he is still carrying secrets and burdens, but he is here to return a jacket, not ask questions. Akashi is unfailingly polite and gracious, and he offers to treat Kita to tea or coffee as a thank you. They wind up in a cafe discussing school, sports, university applications and rankings, and other inconsequential things.

An email address. Given at the end of their first meeting, over tea and coffee.

The start of many late night conversations and discussion of captaincy woes. Kita appreciates Akashi’s dry humour, though he clearly fails at telling jokes. He’s surprisingly astute, even over text. Kita glosses over much of their matches and the choice of captain, though it’s almost certain to be Osamu instead of Atsumu. Akashi offers him an ear and surprising insights, and Kita wonders where did he learn to read people so well from so little.

A novel. Exchanged for one of his own, a discussion on books and writers.

Akashi preferred more modern writers, and had a taste for translated literature. Kita never considered himself much of a reader, generally favouring light novels over books like 1Q84. He finds himself enjoying the novel nonetheless, and ends up in a discussion with Akashi about life and choices, about taming and being tamed. He’s not entirely sure if Akashi gave him the novel as a gentle poke at his school’s name and reputation in reference to foxes, but he supposes it’s not an inaccurate description of them.

A fountain pen. A gift for graduation, well-made and expensive.

It is an unexpected gift, given later when they are both free enough to meet up. University is different from high school, but Kita is taking to it well. He’s forgotten what it’s like not to be a leader, someone constantly in charge. University is a change, and he is responsible for no one but himself. Akashi remarks that university seems to suit him well, and all Kita has to offer is a smile and a slight shrug. When he tries to refuse the gift, Akashi simply insists. After all, you only graduate high school once. Kita accepts it in the end, and admires it later in the privacy of his dorm. It is too much a gift for something mentioned in passing, but he is also pleasantly surprised that Akashi remembered.

A letter. Half-written and crossed out in many places.

He’s not sure if it is a confession or it is not, simply that he has thoughts in his head that he needs to clear. Only that he thinks Akashi has become an important friend to him, and he believes that Akashi thinks the same. Kita is content to wait for the right moment, the right time for this, to let it grow on its own. But he also has to wonder at timing, at chance, at fate. If he had not taken the jacket, if Akashi had not left it, or had come back for it just a bit earlier. If they had made that last point, if he’d let Yuuto take his bag instead. So many ifs and almosts, but this is the one they have.

It is not a bad one to have, he decides.

I AM VERY EMOTIONAL... this is so restrained and yet brimming with something deeper, so fitting for them both. Kita's been giving me Akashi vibes since he first appeared so I'm absolutely delighted to see something for them, and this slow build of a relationship between two very measured, deliberate, intelligent people feels so natural and believable. I love that it's Akashi who comes across as slightly more assertive despite the fact that he's younger, recommending his favourite books to Kita, giving him a graduation gift, lending him a listening ear (and thank you for the shoutout to their similar heights I'm laughing but also crying). I LOVE THIS A LOT THANK YOU FOR WATERING ULTIMATE RAREPAIR CROPS
