Bonus Round 6: Remixes

Remixes

The goal is in sight, participants! Let's finish strong by drawing upon the thousands of fanworks you've created this summer and putting them in new lights.

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Choose a fanwork created by other participants in a previous main or bonus round of SASO 2017 and create a new piece based on it. You could create a fanart of another work, an FST inspired by a piece’s style, a podfic of someone else's work, retell another person’s fanfic from another point of view, create a new fanfic inspired by a great piece of art... go wild! Sequels do count as remixes, with limits: "And then the same thing happened again" is not ok, but "And then some totally new thing happened" is fine, and please don't create only sequels.
  • You cannot remix your teammates' works. You cannot remix your own works. You can remix fills that were created to your own prompts.
  • You can remix a remix, but if we see any remix chains we'll be upset, so do this with moderation and restraint.
  • You must have permission from the original creator. There's a blanket permissions post here (feel free to add yourself to it!), or you can leave a comment on their original post asking for permission.
  • You must include the dreamwidth link to the original work in your post.
  • Since all fills are based on previous works, there will be no prompts for this round. Simply post your fill as a comment in response to this post.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

FORMAT
Bonus round shenanigans all happen in the comments below. Brand-new works only, please.

Required Work Minimums:
  • 400 words (prose)
  • 400px by 400px (art)
  • 14 lines (poetry)
  • 8 tracks (fanmixes)
There is no max work cap.

Format your comment in one of the following ways:

If FILLING:If FILLING as a TEAM GRANDSTAND participant:
FILL: TEAM [YOUR SHIP], [RATING]
  • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to. Any way you format it is fine.
  • Replace RATING with the rating of your fill (G - E)
  • Copy/paste/fill out the following form into your comment box. Delete the guidance text that's in parentheses.

  • NSFW FILLS: Please cross-link these fills and tag them clearly. [community profile] saso_afterhours is open to all NSFW fills.
    • Written/text fills can be hosted on AO3 or [community profile] saso_afterhours ONLY.
    • Art/visual fills can be hosted anywhere; you may include a small safe-for-work thumbnail of the fill in your comment.

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

If you see anyone breaking the code of conduct (e.g., causing drama, being rude) anywhere (not just DW), please contact the mods immediately.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

***

Midorima couldn’t sleep. After tossing around on his bed for a solid hour, he came to this painful conclusion. He rose from his bed, knowing that in his restless state, lying down wouldn’t help. He put on his glasses, went to the other side of his room and sat down at the piano. Playing had always helped him think and calm down but the root of his problems was tightly linked to his musical world and he decided against the idea. He closed his eyes, tired, but his mind kept on running in circles.

Akashi. Akashi. Akashi..

He sighed out his exasperation and in the same breath whispered “Akashi” out loud for the first time, breaking the silence of the room. It wasn’t like anyone could have heard him considering the late hour, the distance between his relatives’ rooms and the soft voice in which he had spoken but his eyes still shot open and he scanned his surroundings quickly, looking for witnesses. As expected, no one was there, though it did nothing to appease the growing guilt in him. Just hours prior, he had left Takao. His boyfriend. And here he was, head full of another man.

Midorima wished that it was a rare occurrence. Unfortunately, he’d be lying if he said otherwise. To be honest, the moments clear of any trace of Akashi were the rare ones. It mostly happened when he was engrossed in a book or spending some quality time with his little sister. Otherwise, either his mind would wander to the redhead boy or else the situation or action would remind him of the Rakuzan Captain. He sighed and started contemplating stepping outside to take some fresh air when he heard his phone buzz and he turned his head in time to see it move slightly on his desk, and lightly illuminate itself. Intrigued, he went to it and read the sender of the mail.

Akashi Seijûrô

His heart started racing, making him sweat in a matter of seconds and his hands were shaking when he opened the message.

“Midorima,

I apologize for contacting you so late but I just left a business dinner and was made aware that the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra will perform next month while I’ll be staying in Tokyo. Would you consider going with me ? If so, I’ll make the proper arrangements. I’d understand if for whatever reason you’d prefer declining.

I’ll be waiting for your answer.

Good night,
Akashi Seijûrô.”

The green-haired boy’s fingers ghosted over the screen of his flip phone and he caught himself just as he was about to tenderly caress the name displayed. He hastily shut it before he did something stupid, something he’d regret.

Like agreeing to go.

But he wanted to. So desperately that it took all of his composure and the manners deeply ingrained in him to stop him from replying. Not now at least, not this late in the night when he was at his wit’s end, about ready to willingly throw caution to the wind and send an eager positive response. Only the tortured look on Takao’s face popping in his mind gave him the strength to put his phone back on his desk. He quickly put on his wardrobe and slid the glass window-door to the backyard, getting outside since he was starting to suffocate in his own bedroom. He sit on the rock a bit on the side of his door. He had to deal with the matter carefully.

He didn’t get much sleep that night.

There are still times, after years (collections of days they’ve lost track of like loose change in a jar because like this they live a little bit longer, their lives stretched out like bridges made completely out of expansion joints as the rivers and bays yawn wider between them) that Taiga still seems to see him fresh, still seems like he’s about to burn up completely and turn to ash with the way they’re looking at each other. It’s flattering; Tatsuya’s not going to lie about that part, that he still has this effect on Taiga (they’ve been seeing each other like this for how long, on top of knowing each other, being two parts of the same set all of their lives?) that he can still overwhelm him.

But the fact remains that they’re kissing and Taiga’s getting dangerously hot.

“Focus, Taiga,” Tatsuya says, pulling back and crooning the words into his neck, sliding his hands up Taiga’s shirt, feeling the skin almost hot enough to melt him beneath.

He lets his fingers condense and freeze, stiffening Taiga’s shirt with the sweat on his back, the moisture in the air, cooling his body off before it all melts back because his heat is so steady and constant, the nuclear explosion in million-year chain reactions like the surface of a star. Taiga makes a strangled sort of sound and Tatsuya laughs, quiet against his neck.

“Tatsuya—”

The ice at Tatsuya’s fingertips is sublimating against the bare skin at the base of Taiga’s neck, but he can feel Taiga’s pulse slowing, his body temperature falling back again. He looks a little bit less urgent and strained, not like his skin’s about to melt.

“Better?”

Tatsuya undoes the top two buttons of Taiga’s shirt (Taiga makes no move to stop him, so he undoes the third one, too) and drags his still icy fingertips across Taiga’s chest to his nipples, tweaking them but then just letting his cold fingers rest against them until Taiga makes a noise, jerks his hips, pulls away. Tatsuya reaches down, undoing the rest of the buttons with one hand and skimming his fingers over Taiga’s abs with the other; he’s heating up again but staying out of the danger zone, at least for now.

Tatsuya lets his hand dip lower and lower. Yeah, it’s going to be heating up again soon; Tatsuya wills the moisture in the air to condense and freeze over Taiga’s skin and presses another kiss to his mouth.

“Easy.”

(It’s not going to be, but that’s the way they like it.)

Taiga could write a box set worth of albums about Tatsuya, and still have material left over. All of his songs already are, in some way, about Tatsuya, trying to evoke some technique Tatsuya had used long ago, the roughness of his first studio album and the bootleg mixtape, or written consciously and baldly about him, about how wonderful and encouraging and gorgeous and generous he is, about what it means to stand onstage as his equal. About the stuff they’ve shared, too, but that’s a little more private, a little too close to Taiga’s heart.

He’ll sing it all; he wants to show Tatsuya off to the world, but there are some things he likes knowing are just for them. Tatsuya before he wakes up, sprawled out awkwardly in bed, stubble on his cheeks, hand reaching out toward Taiga (only vaguely hinted at in lyrics). Tatsuya in the kitchen, making a huge mess out of everything but managing to bake the perfect cake or quiche or lasagna. The first time Tatsuya had kissed him, finally fed up with Taiga’s hinting and beating around the bush, the thing that Taiga had hoped for but hadn’t dared to go for himself.

“I wrote a song for you,” Taiga murmurs, kissing Tatsuya on the side of the head.

“You use that line a lot?” says Tatsuya, smile tugging at his lips.

“No, I wrote it for you to sing. I thought it would suit your voice, and—it’s about us. The first time we kissed. Sort of.”

“I’m sure I can’t sing it from your perspective, not with the feeling you can—it would be bad for sales; you could probably move it up a few steps and—”

“It’s not about sales,” says Taiga, trying to be as firm as he can. “I don’t want to record this. Not for anyone but you. I don’t want to share this part of you with anyone.”

It comes out wrong, Taiga thinks, a different kind of possessive than he’s meaning to convey, except Tatsuya’s not about to rebuff him again. He stands there, opens his mouth, and then.

“Oh.”

It sounds like the wind’s knocked out of him, like he can’t fathom what to say. Like Taiga had left him breathless, even though Tatsuya’s the one who’s always left him breathless, watching him perform in a video and then onstage, meeting him that first time and then as a musician and then the way Tatsuya had kissed him, that first time, intense and firm and real and conveying every bit of certainty that he’d returned Taiga’s feelings that Taiga had been searching for the whole time.

“Play it for me?” Tatsuya manages, finally.

“Sure,” says Taiga, leaning in to kiss Tatsuya first, sweet and slow and a little bit distracting, before Tatsuya pushes him away and his gaze says I want to hear that song right now, which, okay, Taiga can take a hint.

“I still haven’t forgiven you,” Taiga tells him, and Tatsuya nods (he wouldn’t expect that; he doesn’t deserve that, not now and maybe not ever, for everything). “I love you, though, so.”

He pulls Tatsuya through the doorframe, all that exists of the house he’s building, materials chopped down from the mediocre land given to them by the colonists’ kindness and a promise to pay it back and forward, the help Tatsuya’s given them with their own mechanics even before he’d started to pay off the debt for fixing the detonator in his chest. It’s hollow, now, but Taiga always seems to fill it, like the ocean seeping through the cracks in a badly-made rowboat. But right now he’s held against Taiga’s chest, fully human, the doorframe above them, high enough and promising higher ceilings that they will build. Maybe a second floor, someday, Taiga says, and Tatsuya catches himself agreeing. He fits his arms around Taiga’s waist and he feels like his chest is so full it’s about to burst.

*

Taiga no longer talks about the father he was going to bring the treasure back to, the planet he was supposed to return to, the home on which he would bridge the gap to paradise. Tatsuya doesn’t want to bring it up, but sooner or later he drags it into a fight, because he’s always got to be stuffing his mouth with his foot.

“Don’t you get it?” Taiga says, and then breaks off, gesturing to Tatsuya, to the house they’d built, the room around them, the shelves Taiga had sanded down and Tatsuya had nailed to the wall, and oh, fuck.

Tatsuya wants to ask if it’s a compromise he’s had to make, but he already knows the answer.

“It’s hard,” Taiga says, quietly. “But I’m not trading you for anything. I thought I already proved it.”

Tatsuya can’t look away from the ground; it’s like he keeps failing the same goddamn test, except every time he still keeps Taiga.

*

This isn’t a mythical paradise, draped in gold and silver and myth. It’s not the thing people chase forever; it’s not the thing for which anyone would try and blow themself up. It’s better than anything Tatsuya could have ever pursued or dreamed up, better than the riches and the tantalizing treasures that had haunted his dreams year after year. But it’s him and Taiga and a home they’ve carved out themselves, a relationship reinforced with gold and copper wires, carefully navigated. Forgiveness where the point isn’t whether or not Tatsuya had deserved it, but that Taiga had wanted him to take it. The opposite end of the galaxy from where they’d started, maybe, but it seems fitting how far they’ve come.

Alex probably never had to tell them to look like they were in love in the first place. Taiga had probably been doing it all along, even when he hadn’t wanted to let himself; maybe Tatsuya had wanted that kind of permission but it’s not like Taiga can pretend not to see it once he’s started. The way Tatsuya looks a second too long, the ghost of a smile on his lips, his hand so snugly in Taiga’s even before they had admitted anything.

Once, Taiga had heard about ballroom dancing couples doing better, knowing each other in every sense, people whose shared love of dance had led them to a love of each other. More, many times since then, he has heard of dancing that rips couples apart, the anger that simmers beneath the swift crack of their shoes against the wood floors, holding each other close with intensity in their eyes that could be mistaken for love, focus for adoration. He had asked Alex about that and she had sighed and told him that people remember the drama more than they remember the happy stories, because happy stories can seem boring and draw jealousy when they don’t happen to you.

It’s not that he and Tatsuya don’t fight; even in the middle of competitions they’ve argued about stupid shit, less stupid shit, serious shit. It doesn’t make them love each other any less; it doesn’t make them any less willing to cooperate and compete; it doesn’t change the intensity in their eyes and doesn’t make the yearning as they swap outfits in the dressing room any less intense, at least on Taiga’s end. (They always make up before they have sex, though; sex isn’t a problem solver or anything that can stave off the feelings.) And while a win can smooth things over, especially when they’re fighting about dance-related stuff, it’s never enough on its own.

But always, the fighting never wears down the base of trust that’s there, the trust that Tatsuya has in Taiga to lift him up in the air over his head like it’s effortless, spin him out and dip him back, the trust that Taiga has in Tatsuya to do his moves in a mirror, dance backwards first and then push the courage forward for him to move backwards. The shaking muscles, aching feet with blisters from shoes that haven’t quite worn in yet, reciprocal care to the bodies that don’t look quite so flawless out from under the lights and glitter.

Taiga supposes it's only because he knows Tatsuya so well that he sees right through him so easily. Daiki doesn’t, and he can’t be that dumb to have made it this far in the royal guards, for him to be competent enough to trust with Tatsuya in his hands. Taiga supposes he’s both privileged and cursed with this, but it’s not like there’s a reason to keep it to himself, not after the third night in a row that Tatsuya excuses himself, egging the two of them on just have a night in by themselves because he’s too tired out from royal duty (the thinnest excuse Taiga’s ever heard, but Daiki seems to accept it).

“You do realize what he’s doing?” says Taiga, as they sit in the antechamber just outside of Tatsuya’s bedroom.

“What?” says Daiki.

Taiga sighs. “He’s trying to set us up, take himself out of the equation.”

“Um,” says Daiki. “What? Does he have like, some long-ago betrothed or something like that?”

“No,” says Taiga. “There’s none of that sort of pressure on him. It’s just...if he sees a chance to pull this kind of shit, he’s going to do it. Like, put yourself in his shoes, you know, you’re the prince, country comes before everything else and all that. I was raised to sacrifice everything for him, and this is kind of his way of trying to repay—and, like.”

Taiga sighs; there’s too much to explain and it’s all connected, no one part that really comes first. It’s just all there, dependent on itself in a circle, closer to a messy ball of yarn. But Daiki looks at him like he gets the gist of it, and Taiga’s not going to tell him he knew he was smart. So he presses a brief kiss to Daiki’s mouth instead.

“We have to talk with him about it, you know.”

“Yeah,” says Daiki. “Shit. How can he—we dedicated ourselves to him; how does he get that idea?”

“He doesn’t think we don’t want him, more like there always has to be a catch if he’s happy. Because that’s what royalty is, catches and exchanges.”

“But we’re like, the opposite of that.”

“I know,” says Taiga. “It’s just.”

Daiki shrugs. “We’ll get him to listen.”

Taiga smiles. He’s going to have to need a hell of a lot of that stark confidence to deal with Tatsuya and all of his complications and preemptive bargaining, but, well. Tatsuya had picked a good one, so Taiga kisses him again. For luck, but also just because.

They did the whole thing out of order, but it’s not like life is a series of steps that go in sequence. They know that much already, at least, going all the way back to the days when it was just the two of them playing streetball until dark together, really. You’re supposed to meet and go on a date and have sex and fall in love and get to know each other, except they’d met and gotten to know each other and fallen in love and had sex and only now, two months after they’d started spending all the time together they could, are they going on their first official date.

Yes, the wedding had come near the end of the summer and they’d had training camp and basketball keeping them apart until now, but they could have just gotten it done right then, gone somewhere low key and bumped knees under the table because this was all so new. It’s still all so new, and Taiga wonders if that’s going to wear off. Probably some day, but he’d like to think there are infinite things to discover in Tatsuya, not enough to cram into their lifetimes even though they’re going to live until they’re at least a hundred and ten.

Instead of going straight to Tatsuya’s place, Taiga had gone back to the hotel to change into jeans and a hoodie; he sprays a little cologne on and hopes he doesn’t run into any of his teammates on the way down or he’ll never hear the end of it (hey, at least they're not going to this date on the subway, as much as Tatsuya would go for that; Tatsuya’s worth at least a cab on every date). He tells the cabbie to stop outside of Tatsuya’s room; it’s drizzling and Tatsuya under the half-burned lights on the front of his building, the rain dotting the air like freckles, sucks the air out of Taiga’s lungs.

“What?” says Tatsuya.

“Where you going?” says the cabbie.

“168 and Broadway.”

The cabbie sighs, and Taiga just looks at Tatsuya, trying to breathe and give him the answer just like this. Tatsuya smiles at him, soft and real in the dark and Taiga swallows.

“You smell pretty good,” Tatsuya says as they get out of the cab.

Taiga doesn’t really remember how the wings he gets taste, or the beer he gets or Tatsuya’s, which he gets a sip of, or the coffee they buy afterwards, but all of that is incidental, because all he wants to remember is Tatsuya.

I was so all about the Bokuto and Oikawa dynamic in the original fill, and I totally wanted to write the lead up and fade out of it, how Oikawa goes in thinking he's spoiling Bokuto when it's the other way. Also somehow I've been stuck with the Oikawa and Sawamura apartment sharing since last SASO.

***

Oikawa isn't so sure about being on the same team as Bokuto when his first year of university starts. They've never met, due to Aoba Johsai's Nationals roadblock, so Oikawa knows Bokuto by reputation only as a loud, somewhat overbearing spiker with intense mood swings that his team babies him through, for some reason. He's sure they're going to get paired up, between their same year and Bokuto's spiking stats and Oikawa's reputation for being able to work with anyone, and Oikawa isn't looking forward to having to baby some glass cannon when he's hours away from home for the first time and not feeling his stablest himself.

He confesses as much to Sawamura, his erstwhile roommate, as they're unpacking their boxes in their Tokyo apartment. Sawamura is a good listener but tells Oikawa that he actually thinks the two of them might get on rather well, and that he should give it a chance.

"After all, you don't hate living with me yet, right?" Sawamura asks. "I bet you're surprised."

"Jury's still out," Oikawa sniffs, all the while wondering how long before he can upgrade to calling Sawamura Dai-chan. "And I'm not sure I can trust your opinion, given how much you love your little team of weirdos."

But the semester starts, and practices along with it, whether Oikawa is ready or not. He's hoping at least the routine of classes and practices will ease some of the homesickness, but it's a challenge to keep his friendly smile up when the first thing that happens is that a over-muscled spiky-haired freshman bounds up to Oikawa like an overexcited labradoodle.

"You're Oikawa-kun, right?!" he asks, sticking out his hand. Oikawa shakes it, one eyebrow raised.

"And you're Bokuto-kun," Oikawa answers. Bokuto bobs his head. "Well, let's work hard. And please take care of me, I guess."

"Nah, it's definitely me who should say that," Bokuto says, actually scuffing his foot. Is this guy for real? Oikawa wonders to himself as Bokuto turns and looks this way and that, trying to watch the whole gym at once as guys warm up and their new coach barks orders.

Bokuto, as it turns out, is absolutely for real, and they do get on, just like Sawamura said. It's just that Bokuto is so eager to please, tries whatever Oikawa suggests, is always ready to do another round of drills, stay later, work harder. When Bokuto inevitably has a meltdown during their second week there, Oikawa keeps tossing to him even though Bokuto doesn't pull out of it for half a dozen points and it costs them the practice match.

"Didn't have to do that," Bokuto mutters when they're sitting on the bench next to each other. Behind them a few other first years are muttering much the same thing to each other. "It's fine to ignore me when I get all…" He waves a hand, eyes downcast.

"It's not fine at all," Oikawa says crisply, giving a sharp look to the complainers until they look away, embarrassed. When he turns his focus back to Bokuto, Bokuto is looking at him with wide eyes, unsure. "I have to earn your trust, don't I? If we're going to work together."

"You do?" Bokuto's eyes somehow get rounder, more golden. "But…I mean, there's lots of good guys here. Ones who aren't so much trouble as me. Everybody's so talented, and you can set for any of them."

"Hm, you'll do fine, I think," Oikawa says archly, although he can't hide all of the smile at Bokuto's wide grin spreading over his face like sunshine. "So let's make a deal, all right? I'll toss to you, and you'll hit it for me. I can trust you, right?"

Bokuto's whole spine straightens. He holds out his fist, pinky sticking out. "Pinky swear!" Oikawa hooks his finger with Bokuto's to shake on it, and that's how it's been ever since.

But it takes a while for it to sink in that Bokuto's affections mean that he will do just about anything Oikawa asks, up to and including piggybacking Oikawa home after a long, exhausting practice. With his cheek against Bokuto's warm shoulder, Oikawa tries to remember a single time Bokuto has told him no for anything, and comes up empty.

Bokuto lets Oikawa wear his favorite, softest sweatshirt, even when Oikawa doesn't give it back right away. Bokuto doesn't mind when Oikawa crashes his apartment and turns the action movie over to the news. Bokuto is only too happy to come along when Oikawa asks him to go sneaker shopping on the weekend, even when they go to three more stores after and he ends up holding all of Oikawa's bags.

"Here we go!" Bokuto says, sitting Oikawa's feet back on the floor gently in his room. He stretches, rolling his neck. "You want first shower?"

What he wants…Oikawa steps forward into Bokuto's space and puts his hands on either side of Bokuto's face, and then he leans in to press their mouths together, Bokuto's eyes so wide. It only lasts a second before Oikawa pulls back to examine Bokuto's face. "Yes?"

Bokuto nods so fast his hair spikes wave, but when he leans forward, Oikawa leans back. Bokuto tilts his head, confused.

"You never tell me no," Oikawa says, chewing his lip. "Why not?"

"'Cause I wanna say yes," Bokuto chuckles. His hands come up to the small of Oikawa's back and splay there, so big and warm that Oikawa wants to melt. "You never ask me to do anything I don't want to."

"Oh," Oikawa says faintly, letting Bokuto kiss him this time. It's long and sweet, Oikawa's eyes fluttering shut as Bokuto pulls him in closer and Oikawa's hands settle on his chest. When it finally does break, Oikawa's short of breath, too close to see anything but Bokuto's warm, golden eyes.

"Yes?" Bokuto asks, grinning with just a hint of tease.

Oikawa shoves him, delight rippling over him when Bokuto's strong grip means he goes nowhere. "You really need that shower."

He fucked with Taiga’s boyfriends because he wanted to. He fucked Taiga’s boyfriends because he had to. Tatsuya couldn’t quite pinpoint the exact moment his life became like this -- moving to Tokyo after high school, moving in with Taiga had seemed such a good idea at the time. Then he started to do the thing that he did. Ruining things. Messing them and breaking things without any thought of how to stop it.

First, it was Kuroko. He knew that would be the cruelest blow because of course Taiga loved Kuroko best. Kuroko was his partner in so many ways -- on the court and off. But it had been so easy to take him from Taiga, so easy that Tatsuya was almost disappointed when he leaned in for a kiss after a long afternoon of talk and soft flirtation, and Kuroko had leaned in too.

He forgot, sometimes, that both Taiga and Kuroko were younger than him -- more in experience than in years -- but when he looked up to see Taiga standing at the door, his face young and stark with shock, he remembered again.

He smiled, to reassure Taiga that it would be all right.

*

“He wasn’t right for you,” he told Taiga later, even though he knew Taiga was raging inside, barely holding it in. He wouldn’t look at Tatsuya, but that was all right. Tatsuya knew Taiga well enough to know that he would forgive him. He had to. Taiga was all Tatsuya loved.

*

Aomine was easy to control. Tatsuya had only needed to give him a barely suggestion of interest and there he was, preening at the attention, immediately receptive to whatever debauchery Tatsuya suggested.

He fucked so well that Tatsuya thought about calling him again, even after Taiga had caught them, Aomine red-assed from where Tatsuya had spanked him and Tatsuya on his back. He beckoned Taiga closer, as an invitation as well as a challenge, but he knew that Taiga wouldn’t accept it.

Not yet.

He wondered how drunk Taiga would have to be to take what he wanted and what Tatsuya wanted to give him. How fucked the both of them were (Taiga hadn’t been, before Tatsuya had gotten ahold of him -- but that was Tatsuya’s gift.)

*

Taiga started avoiding him.

And that could not stand.

*

Mibuchi, Kise, none of these boys mattered much to Tatsuya. They knew it too and took it easily enough. It was only Taiga who minded, only Taiga who got that wounded look in his face every time he caught them.

Taiga, Taiga, why couldn’t he see? The one Tatsuya wanted was him.

*
Tatsuya knew that he was going to destroy his relationship with Taiga as soon as they slept together. He still did it, though, because Taiga still believed that he loved him and that that was enough. Tatsuya loved him so much -- that innocence, that naivete, untouched by almost anything that happened to him.

“I have always loved you best,” Tatsuya had told him, and Taiga’s whole face had changed. He looked like he understood Tatsuya at last. But he didn’t, in truth, because Tatsuya didn’t tell him the end of that sentence.

And I always destroy what I love.

Yukio still saw his face sometimes, though his features had taken on the quality of a dream now, the perfection of his mouth, the curve of his jaw seemed unreal, like statue of Apollo, untouched by time. The war was over. No one wanted to talk about the war and Yukio found himself shuffled into a teaching career in lieu of anything else to do.

He didn’t hate it, really. Most of his students were earnest young people who wanted to do the best for their family. There were some who were troublemakers, but Yukio didn’t mind bringing his own powers of persuasion to bear on them when he had to. Mostly, he didn’t understand his students very well. There was barely a decade between them, but it might has well have been a century. Had he ever been so carefree? So unmarked by time like they were?

His leg -- shattered by shrapnel and then pieced back together again -- made him walk with a limp, but that was fine. He knew he’d never run like he had as a boy, or even as a man, as an officer exasperated by the antics of his men. He missed them all, vain Moriyama and incomprehensible Hayakawa -- but of course, there was one ghost that would never leave him.

Kise’s ghost haunted him in different ways. Yukio would see him in different people -- a cheeky student who shot him a cheerful smile, a graceful girl, walking down the road. One day, when he was cleaning out the wardrobe in what had been his sister’s room, he found Kise again, his yellowing photograph looking out from the past. He could barely make out what the ad was selling through the sudden, shameful tears that blurred his eyes.

If Kise had lived, Yukio thought -- he knew -- he would have made something with his life. He would have made it exciting, poetic, wonderful, fun. Yukio hadn’t known him in the outside world -- war was its own experience, intense and deadly, with nothing that could compare to it -- but still, Yukio had known enough about him to guess what kind of man Kise would be outside of war.

So Yukio pushed himself to do the same. He walked more slowly down a flower-strewn avenue and reminded himself to look at the petals, to appreciate their beauty. He allowed his mother, long since given up on the hope of having grandchildren, set up a meeting with one of her friend’s daughters. The girl had kind eyes, but Yukio knew already it wouldn’t work.

But still, he allowed himself to feel more, to look more. For the first time since the war had ended, since Kise had died, Yukio allowed himself to live. He thought, in his heart of hearts, that this was what Kise would have wanted for him.

I genuinely got emotional and choked up as I was reading this poem, because I read it to the tunes of the official Oofuri soundtrack, and I have had this remix planned for a really long time, and I just. I felt so honored and touched to be remixing this and reading it. I felt so much; your words are so important to me, and so is the way you wove them. A skittering bird of a boy, god. God. I just. This was such a privilege to read out loud how Takaya falls out of a harsh sky and into love, and the gold of Mihashi’s heart. Please forgive the breath in my recording, I just. I got to a really emotional place.

I also like this pairing! I love that they are sideline ahoge buddies and totally think Suga is Yamaguchi's favorite senpai.

Sugawara ignores the buzz of his phone when it goes off, because he's talking to a couple different people on his laptop at the same time as he tries to finish his lesson plans for the next week, and he assumes his phone is doubling the twitter notifications as it always does.

An hour later when he gets up to stretch and picks up his phone from the charger, he's surprised to see Yamaguchi's name in the middle of the other notifications when he thumbs the home button. Clicking away the lock screen, Sugawara goes to his voicemail and hits play.

"Ah, Sugawara-sa…kun? Uh, hi senpai." Yamaguchi's voice is a little deeper than Sugawara remembers, but otherwise unchanged, soft and a little hesitant, neither low nor high but somewhere pleasantly in the middle. "I just…it's nothing important. I was eating a nikuman and it made me think of you. I thought maybe you'd want to get a drink some time? Call me back if you want, or if you're too busy, that's all right." There's a pause, and Sugawara assumes the message is over, but then just before it ends there's a muttered, "Ouch! hot!"

"Cute," Sugawara can't help but chuckle. He glances at the clock and sees that it's probably a little too late to call back, but after only a second's hesitation, Sugawara decides to go for it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

They meet at an izakaya only a fifteen minute walk from Karasuno, at Sugawara's suggestion. Yamaguchi is waiting outside when Sugawara comes up the sidewalk, but looking the wrong direction by chance, and he jumps when Sugawara claps him hard on the shoulder.

"S-senpai!" Yamaguchi gasps, making Sugawara laugh. Yamaguchi is taller than him by a larger margin than he remembers, but he still has the cute freckles, and even his idiot hair sticking up, although it's somewhat tamed by his shorter, respectable adult haircut.

"You don't have to call me that anymore, you know," Sugawara says as he pushes Yamaguchi inside. He's a regular, and tells the waitress just to start with two beers and the usual stuff as she seats them.

"Come here often?" Yamaguchi asks, smiling a little.

"School staff comes here a lot," Sugawara explains, but it just makes Yamaguchi's eyebrows rise. "You didn't know? I teach at Karasuno." Sugawara chuckles at the wide-eyed "Oh!" Yamaguchi says to that. "And before you ask, yes the club room is still shitty, no the freshmen aren't cute as your year, and of course I'm assistant coach. We need two these days."

They both have a few beers too many because neither of them wants to stop catching up, talking makes their throats dry, the beer makes them prone to reminiscing about their ridiculous high school team, and it's a vicious cycle. Sugawara is more than a little buzzed by the time they stumble outside, and very glad tomorrow is Sunday.

"So what should I call you instead of senpai?" Yamaguchi asks, picking up a conversation they dropped hours ago. "Other than a cab, clearly."

Sugawara laughs so hard he sags against Yamaguchi for support, clinging to his arm. When he opens his eyes, Yamaguchi is looking down at him fondly. Sugawara flashes him the grin that used to always get him his way back in high school, and hopes he hasn't lost his touch. "If you come home with me, you won't have to call me at all, will you?"

YELLING SUGA SO SMOOTH

This was! so!! such a lovely surprise ahhh and their reunion is so warm and sweet <3 Yamaguchi's little "ouch! hot!" made me laugh (cuuuute how could suga resist I FEEL HIM SO MUCH) and I love how they feel so natural together, that they fall back together in such a relaxed way even after all this time. Yamaguchi's flustered stumbling over what to call him was adorable. The last line was just the absolute clincher I am swooning

Also Karasuno teacher Suga is something I always enjoy reading, it's a future I can envision easily for him and I think he'd be a natural at it :') thank you for remixing this!!

You know how cats bring their owners dead animals?

***

The fish slaps him right in the face. It’s big as his forearm, shining silver and blue in a rippled pattern over its body, and it’s not quite dead. Not yet. Imayoshi barely manages to catch it in time, hugging its body against him with both arms as it squirms and tries to wriggle free.

“Don’t drop it,” Makoto cautions, swimming up to Imayoshi and flipping his tail out of the water to splash Imayoshi and the fish both. “I had to fucking tow it all the way from out there because the big fish know better than to come where the water’s shallow.”

“...It’s for me?” Imayoshi asks, jerking his head away from the fish’s frantically twisting tail. Where’s the knife? He needs to kill it quickly before it escapes.

“It’s for us,” Makoto corrects with a scowl. “Kill it and do the cooking thing you like so much. We can have half each.”

Imayoshi decides not to say that he can’t eat half of a fish this huge. He can always have the excess for dinner, after all.

“Thank you,” he says instead and Makoto’s scowl widens.

“I didn’t do it for you,” the merman lies grumpily. “I did it because I like the taste of cooked fish and you’re smart enough not to try to run away with the whole fish so you don’t have to give me half.”

“Of course,” Imayoshi says, putting enough polite disbelief into his tone that there’s no way Makoto can mistake his words for sincere.

*

The oyster hits Imayoshi in the face. He’s gotten used to catching fish but the oyster was small enough that he doesn’t quite manage to catch it in time. It plonks onto his lap and he looks at it, then at Makoto.

“Are we sharing an oyster today?” He asks, picking it up.

Makoto rolls his eyes at Imayoshi. “Of course not. What would you do, suck it in first and then hold it in your mouth while I suck half of it back into my mouth and bite?”

Almost as soon as the words are out of his mouth, Makoto’s expression shifts. “...That does sound good, actually.”

It doesn’t to Imayoshi but he drops that in favor of picking at the oyster’s shell. Some green mixture appears to have to been smeared over the hinges so Imayoshi has to peel it off. Good thing they aren’t going to eat it. That sort of mold must surely be toxic.

The ring inside is gold, gleaming and bright, resting around a single large pearl. Imayoshi stares at it for a second, then arches an eyebrow at Makoto.

The merman looks challengingly at Imayoshi. “Those rings are your human collars, yes? Wearing it marks you as mine.”

“Close enough,” Imayoshi murmurs and slips the ring onto his right ring finger. It’s a little big but he can get it resized.

When he lifts his hand to the sky, the sunlight glints it off so brightly that he almost misses the merman’s smile. Almost.

Hanamiya’s side! Warnings for violence and deliberate sports injury.

***

He’s been waiting for this for weeks, giving time for the teams to recover after the season, watching Imayoshi gradually relax his shoulders from the heavy burden of being the captain. When he strikes, it’s public enough that Imayoshi can’t turn down the exhibition match, casual enough that nobody can accuse Hanamiya of carrying a grudge at Kirisaki’s loss to Touou.

They agree on an outdoor court, Imayoshi naming the time and place (far too early in the morning, urgh, Hanamiya’s flattered that Imayoshi’s remembered that Hanamiya is not a morning person) and Hanamiya agreeing without contest. The outdoor court is what’s important. He needs concrete for what he has in mind.

He tells his team that this is going to be special and they’re doing double practice as preparation.

Everyone knows better than to complain.

*

The match starts and everyone swings into action. It’s a spider’s web woven by six spiders working in unison, all taking the cue from their captain. They’ve practiced the drills again and again; their feet pound against concrete and their arms swing with all the animal grace of gorillas, thoughtless muscle memory coming to the forefront to dictate their plays.

Only Hanamiya really needs to think. The others just need to obey.

Hanamiya watches Imayoshi, indulging himself in a way that he wouldn’t usually dare to, and when the moment is right, he darts forwards.

The clash of his foot against Imayoshi’s ankle is as intimate and terrible as a kiss would’ve been. Just a sprain and skin ripped off Imayoshi’s arm, blood on the court to sanctify it and seal the silent promise that Hanamiya makes.

He smirks down at Imayoshi, the sharpness of his own teeth pressing against the inside of his lips. Imayoshi’s eyes are clouded, properly open for once, and he’s curled up in pain. Hanamiya wants to pick him up and carry him off the court, offer profusely insincere apologies until he has to get back onto the court to destroy the rest of Imayoshi’s team.

Then he can have Imayoshi watch as one by one, the Touou’s chance of victory next year gets torn down. All for him, sweeter and far more original than a box of chocolates or a bouquet of roses.

“I’m honored you respect me so much,” Imayoshi says, looking up at Hanamiya, still so controlled.

Hanamiya doesn’t get a chance to say it’s not respect he feels before the ref comes rushing over. Tch. Some people have no sense of romance.
