Bonus Round 7: Free For All

Free-For-All

Let's finish SASO 2017 with a bang. This bonus bonus round allows any kind of prompt imaginable in any format. The sky's the limit!

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with literally any kind of prompt, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms, with the following caveats:
    • Large image prompts should be thumbnailed and linked to, as explained here.
    • Fanart/fanfiction/fanwork prompts are only allowed if you created the fanwork yourself or if you have explicit permission to use it, and proof of permission must be linked to in your prompt header.
    • Quote prompts can come from almost anything, but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Reposting prompts is fine, but be respectful and keep crediting in mind. A prompt belongs to the person who posted it to this round, and who can fill it is determined by whether or not they are on that person's team.
      • If reposting a br2 (tic tac toe) prompt, please post each prompt square as its own individual comment. Posting tic tac toe boards wholesale will crash our br scorer and the bonus doesn't apply for this round, anyway.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Akira & Hikaru). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Akira/Hikaru). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Besides that, if you want to prompt something, regardless of format—even formats not previously allowed in SASO—go right ahead. If you're unsure you can ask us for clarification, but tbh just go for the gold.
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with a fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

If you see anyone breaking the code of conduct (e.g., causing drama, being rude) anywhere (not just DW), please contact the mods immediately.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

Ship: Kuroo Tetsurou/Kozume Kenma
Fandom: Haikyuu!!
Major Tags: None
Other Tags: None
Word Count: 638

long distance krkn is one of my favourite things :')

***

The first year is the longest.

It’s Kenma who brushes it off like it’s nothing, who tells Kuroo, without even looking up from the TV, that it’s not like anything will change. He doesn’t bother to elaborate further. From where he’s lying prone on the floor, his fingers move swiftly across a well-worn gamepad.

Kuroo kicks the spare blankets over him and turns down the light on his way out.

/

The first year is the longest, because old habits are hard to unlearn.

Without someone to keep him in check, Kuroo wakes up too early, runs too far, too fast, and finds himself at the end of a deserted pier, gazing out at the sea. The cry of the gulls overhead is just as raucous as the crows of home, though there’s a lot less garbage on the boardwalk and the sunrise on the water is something to behold.

They never woke up to a sight like this, in Nerima. Kuroo thinks, slapping at a sandfly, that Kenma might find it overrated.

Kenma sends him texts so mundane they’re positively mind-numbing. hey, how do i do this organic chem. hey, where did you put the scarf i lent you. hey, my mum is sending you some apple pie. in case you miss home.

Kuroo replies in kind. Sometimes, he asks after the team, but not too often; he knows Kenma will bristle if he hovers too close. It’s never been his style anyway. Kenma is his own kind of captain, and Kuroo’s taught himself to reel in, let go gracefully, after all this time.

The second year goes by faster. After that, Kuroo stops counting.

These are their habits, now, and new habits that do not melt with springtime are here to stay. He always saves the apple pie to savour, bit by bit, until there are only crumbs left in the box, and then he runs a fingertip through them and licks them off slowly, eyes closed.

/

It is in a year sometime down the road that Kenma moves out of their old neighbourhood, closer to work, and invites Kuroo over as his first house guest.

“Don’t sugarcoat it,” Kuroo had said, smirking when Kenma called. “You just want me to help you fix your lights, or something.”

“Yeah. Are you coming or not?”

“What do you think?”

He had hung up after Kenma’s noncommittal huff and see you tomorrow, stared at the train lines winding overhead, wondered to himself how he could have spent nearly all of his life with a voice and not know its mellow sound over the phone. Sometimes, he thinks, Kenma is wrong about some things, smart as he is; sometimes, things change.

/

Kenma had mentioned in passing that he’d given up bleaching his hair from sheer laziness, that he’d let it grow out because he just didn’t have time these days. Kuroo had joked about helping him cut it, like he did once when they were kids. Kenma had categorically refused.

He’d known all this, and yet Kuroo isn’t prepared to see Kenma with his hair pulled back into a messy ponytail when he opens the door. Stray strands frame his face in black, the way they used to, and he’s dressed in an oversized sweater; there is cinnamon and autumn on Kuroo’s tongue again, on the scent of the wind.

Cute is a word that Kuroo’s heard before, used on Kenma. He’s never seen it, himself. Kenma is sharp and smart, prickly and a fine-veined kind of balance, patient and impatient and languid all at once, a contradictory bundle of impossibilities—

“Don’t just stand there.” Kenma waves him in, and turns around. “What are you staring for?”

“Just thinking that cute is relative,” says Kuroo, reaching to tug at his ponytail, an old smile curving his lips.

lemme get this out of my system first: AHHHHHHHHH

i love how you've colored kuroo's perspective, in these snatches of sentimentality and fondness and practicality. for him, he's more aware of change, more conscious of the small, day-to-day habits that aren't quite the same. i feel like this reads like the epitome of change in a long-distance relationship, where it's easier at first for kuroo to note all the differences and miss what's left behind (seeing kenma everyday and hearing his voice), but eventually accepting that what's most important stays (their shared comfort), while change is not only inevitable, but necessary (kenma coming into his own as captain).

it's interesting here that while kuroo's as accustomed as kenma is to being together, kuroo's the one who's had to learn to let go of all the minutiae that he isn't privy to anymore, and accept that kenma remains kenma. such an acceptance requires a trust that old friends like kuroo and kenma would have to learn, and you chronicle the process so well— in these fleeting moments where kuroo comes to terms with what he has and what he doesn't, and adapts regardless. the extent to how well they know each other, in each mundane interaction that rings of comfort and yet of slow, discomfiting progression, is captured beautifully.

I HOPE THAT MADE SENSE. thank you for writing this, i'm gonna go resume my "ahhh"-ing now ;^;

aahhh god the notion of them drifting apart subtly always gets me right in the soft spots.

"wondered to himself how he could have spent nearly all of his life with a voice and not know its mellow sound over the phone" = I really loved this in particular. It's funny to think about since I grew up when teenagers still talked on the phone, but for them living so close and then having texts and Line... a strange "first" for them to experience after so long.
