Bonus Round 1: Quotes

Bonus Round 1: Quotes

SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

PLAY BALL! For this round, we'd like you to take inspiration from songs, sayings, poems, and other kinds of famous words.

Because this is our first full round, please read this post carefully before proceeding!

This round ends at 7PM on June 13 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!" -Kermit the Frog
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Yachi & Kiyoko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Yachi/Kiyoko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • You cannot fill your team's prompts or your own prompts.

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

There he goes again, Toudou thinks, off to his own little world, God knows where. He’d always let him be, addicted to his mysterious charm, to the way Manami flies out the door waving, not looking back even once, like a bird freed from his cage. But lately Toudou wonders if he’s the one trapping himself.

He would sit by the window almost every evening waiting for the house to be illuminated by Manami’s presence again. He likes to imagine that he is the reason for that effervescent smile he makes when he walks in and sees him, but it just seems like hopeful thinking.

“How was your day,” Toudou asks one day at the dining table.

“It was fun! How was yours?” Manami chirps in between chews, his voice glowing even more than usual, but Toudou doesn’t know where the source of light is coming from. He never knows.

“You know I wish you would give me the time of day.”

“You’re always welcome to join me.”

“I want you to take me with you.”

They hear thunderclap in the distance, as if on cue.

Manami smirks, his curved lips like a hook that pulls Toudou in. “Perfect timing. Let’s go.”

Toudou’s heartbeat quickens with each step as he wordlessly follows Manami to the front door. Without further warning, the younger boy strips off his shirt and turns the knob.

“Wait -- what are you doing Manami, you’ll catch a cold!” Toudou can’t hold himself back from being concerned all the time. But for the first time in that very spot Manami actually looks at him, his eyes inviting, before heading right out into the first drizzle of summer.

They stand on the pathway in their front yard soaking in silence. Toudou pushes his wet bangs away from his face and stares at Manami, who has his head tilted up and his eyes closed. He decides to copy him, letting the droplets fall on his face and arms; it feels light and cleansing and so peaceful...

“The rain. It’s nice, isn’t it?” Manami says after a minute.

By now Toudou forgets how his drenched shirt is sticking against his skin. “Yeah, it is… I’ve never really noticed before.”.

“Well, it hardly rains anyway. But when it does, I like to be right underneath it. The water caresses my skin. The scent of grass sharpens tremendously. The pitter-pattering like music. Maybe I’d see a rainbow afterwards,” Manami smiles. “I've tried sticking my tongue out too but I don't really taste anything..."

Toudou thinks he’s starting to see what’s inside that peculiarly beautiful mind of his, and he really doesn’t seem to be in it. So he leans forward and kisses him hard, imprinting the taste of his lips as the taste of rain.

“Thank you, Toudou-san,” Manami blushes in surprise. His eyes are shining so blue and wide like the sea and sky were one, as if the rain and gloom isn’t existing at this moment, and Toudou loses himself deeper inside of them, knowing for sure that there’s no turning back.

I wanted this to be longer but I ended up getting sick so idk if I can do more than this before the round is over? But I might try to write a sequel eventually to make up for it! This dear sweet OT3 is so important...

--

Rin never, ever knew he was in love. He knew he was a romantic, sure—about as well as he knew he liked spicy food and preferred to wear his hair kind of long. It wasn’t a huge part of his life, but it was there.

Until Australia.

It could have been the new view of the big, wide ocean from a different shore. It could have been the vital charge of actively pursuing his dreams. It might also have just been something as boring and unromantic as the onslaught of hormones. But something in Rin changed.

At first, it was just noticing what was around him. Noticing the high energy of other swimmers and watching the way their bodies moved through the water. No big deal, it was normal to pay attention to swimming. That was nothing worth worrying about. But when it turned into noticing other members of the school stretching, or changing, or just hanging out in street clothes doing absolutely nothing swimming-related… well, that was more difficult to explain.

The first time he saw another boy tug off his jeans to reveal he’d been wearing jammers underneath, Rin felt the air leave his lungs like one blunt blow to his chest. He realized he could either get embarrassed or angry, so he chose angry. Angry that it reminded him of Haru. Angry that something as simple as that affected him so much. Angry that when he blinked and rubbed his eyes, it wasn’t Haru standing there.

It was possibly even more irritating that the next time, it was just seeing a nobody with broad shoulders running into the surf one weekend at the beach that stopped Rin in his tracks. The guy didn’t even look like Makoto, aside from the easy set of his muscles, but Rin found himself wondering if Makoto would look like that before long. If he’d already started to fill out even more. Just imagining that made him want to lie down and bury his face in the sand.

Strike three was noticing that one of the other guys had left his goggles behind in the locker room one day and shouting, “Hey, wait up!” It was hard to even catch up and hand over the missing item because, even though he’d said it in English, Rin couldn’t get over how very Nagisa he had sounded. He’d meant to pack up for the day, but since he wasn’t even dressed yet, he marched indignantly back to the pool and flung himself back in the water. A montage of every lingering glance Nagisa’s eyes laid on Haru played behind Rin’s eyes, and it became abundantly clear all at once that Nagisa probably had this same damn problem. Only he seemed to have the advantage of not getting flustered and bitter about it.

He considered writing to Nagisa about it, but it was way too embarrassing, even if he tried to allude to it vaguely in some kind of code. Maybe Sousuke, then—but when he tried that, his pencil lead kept breaking over and over before he even noticed how hard he’d been pressing down. Completely useless.

One day a classmate dragged him along to a Japanese-English bilingual bookstore, and he forgot about the association between nostalgia and pain long enough to wander the shelves, eyes twinkling, feeling almost at home. The listless staff had no problem with anyone lingering to browse, either, so Rin skimmed just about everything he could get his hands on—gossip mags, cookbooks, history texts. When no one was looking, he flipped idly through a few volumes of shoujo manga, too. He found a wispy illustration of a softly-smiling girl nestled between two others on a wide futon, all three of them dozing contentedly with entwined fingers. He snapped the book shut and shoved it back onto the shelf with a derisive click of his tongue. As if there could be friendships like that. If that was even friendship at all. There was absolutely no point in imagining himself huddled between Haru and Makoto, peacefully dozing while enveloped in their shared warmth. That would be a really stupid thing to think about.

There was nothing he could do about it at all until that fateful winter break. He hadn’t planned to see anyone at all, but that wasn’t what was written in the stars for Rin, and he had never been one to doubt things like fate.

“You could have called me,” Haru mumbled into the cold air.

Before Rin even noticed what he was saying, he was being more honest than he’d intended.

“I mean, that would have been kinda embarrassing.”

But that wasn’t even the half of it.

Word count: 520. My first fill, and it’s nothing but gross kagesuga fluff. Figures.

***

Suga is walking with the other third years and laughing as Daichi socks Asahi in the arm, the taller boy whimpering about how the captain is only over mean to him, when a quiet voice comes from behind Suga, "Suga-san."

He turns around to see Kageyama standing there, looking slightly flustered. The dark haired boy is staring intently at the ground as he mutters, "Can I talk to you, for just a second?"

Suga frowns at Kageyama's unease. "Is everything alright?"

Kageyama nods once sharply, still looking a tad red, especially once Daichi and Asahi turn around to see what's caught Suga's attention.

Still puzzled over Kageyama's strange mood, Suga turns to Daichi and Asahi and waves them on home, telling them he'll see them tomorrow.

He follows Kageyama into the now empty locker room, almost eerily silent without the normal shouts and laughter echoing through its walls.

Kageayama stops and turns to face him, and Suga thinks that it doesn't matter how long they date, he will never entire get used to how the other boy looks at him, intense dark eyes focused on him, and only him. It never fails to make him catch his breath.

Kageyama's still not talking and Suga's concern is only growing the longer the silence goes on. He steps forward and lightly brushes dark hair off Kageyama's frowning face, and asks softly "Did you fight with Hinata again? I've told you, you only need to talk to each other and-"

He's cut off with sudden lips covering his own, a gentle hand cupping the back of his head and burying long fingers in his hair. Kageyama's mouths gently but insistently over his own, and it's only a few seconds before he's returning the kiss.

The taller boy pulls away after a little while, but only so far as to lean down and touch his forehead against Suga's. He quietly says, "I wanted to kiss you."

Suga laughs breathlessly, his own voice quiet and teasing, "I can see."

Kageyama kisses him again, less demanding this time, slower and even gentler, moving to shyly press a couple of closed-mouth kisses against Suga's neck. Suga moans quietly and tilts his neck to allow Kageyama more access to his neck and collar, and brings his own arms up around the younger boy as he nuzzles into his shoulder. "But we were going to see each other later tonight, weren't we?"

He does laugh when he feels Kageyama shake his head, and smiles as Kageyama pulls again, face fiercely intense as ever, cheeks flushed. Kageyama tightens his grip on Suga's arms and mutters, "I couldn't wait that long."

And it's Suga's turn to go bright red, and he's burying his face in his hands. "Kageyama, I don't know how you can say these things."

The younger boy looks slightly embarrassed. "I'm sorry."

Suga laughs as he lowers his hands to hold Kageyama's, and he grins as he moves closer and leans up on his toes to press his mouth against his boyfriend's. "Don't be," he whispers against Kageyama's lips, "I couldn't wait, either".

Izuki Shun stumbles, crashes, and falls into Moriyama’s life. Literally.

Literally, as in Moriyama is innocently strolling through the library aisles, weaving in and out between bookshelves in hot pursuit of some crazy physics textbook he knows he’ll never be able to decipher, when Izuki Shun appears from behind a corner and unintentionally catapults himself and more than a couple of joke books into Moriyama’s arms. He thinks there is likely a scientific explanation behind this. Inertia, maybe. Perpetual motion, or something.

And then he accidentally looks into Izuki Shun’s eyes and thinks, oh. Maybe it’s fate.

Maybe when Izuki Shun catapulted himself into Moriyama’s arms, he also managed to utilize scientific laws of motion or however true love works to catapult himself into Moriyama’s heart as well. It’s fate. Meant to be. Moriyama wonders if this is the start of something new and beautiful.

Except, you know, fate is cruel and terrible and not at all like the television shows make it out to be. Which is why Moriyama Yoshitaka’s tongue is tied and he fails to suavely mention the idea of soulmates to Izuki Shun while he is introducing himself as a second year in the Mathematics department and an aspiring calendar maker.

“Calendar maker,” Moriyama says faintly.

“Yeah,” Izuki replies with a blinding smile that Moriyama thinks might be illegal in multiple prefectures of Japan. “With a pun for every week. Punce a week.”

“Puns,” Moriyama says faintly.

“Puns,” Izuki echoes with another smile, and Moriyama wonders distantly if it’s too late to play dead to get out of this unfortunate event in his life. “They’re punderful.”

You’re pun-derful, Moriyama cannot say out loud. Your word games are playing games with my heart, he cannot vocalize.

Izuki Shun stumbles, crashes, and falls into Moriyama’s life and the only resonating thought he can manage to grapple his hands around is oh, oh, I am positively screwed.

-

“Let’s say hypothetically,” Moriyama says loudly when he and Kasamatsu are the only ones remaining in the locker room, “that a very handsome guy falls in love with someone else who is perhaps too beautiful for this world—”

“God,” Kasamatsu says quietly.

“I appreciate that you think I’m holy and otherworldly but I’m merely your best friend, not a god.” Moriyama flashes a winning smile that Kasamatsu is very tired of, evidently.

“And you wonder why you’re single,” replies Kasamatsu in a very prickly, hedgehog-y, Kasamatsu fashion.

“Not for long,” Moriyama says. “I mean—not for long, for this hypothetical handsome guy that I hypothetically know. A distant cousin.”

“Okay. Your distant cousin.”

“Yes, my distant cousin is very handsome, suave, smooth; he’s the type of guy that everyone else is inwardly and inherently envious of.”

“Right.”

“And while he is all of those things and more, he might have fallen in love with this beautiful person with a smile brighter than that terribly bright lightbulb in our Japanese Literature classroom—”

Kasamatsu snorts.

“—and he acts like a fool around this person. For instance, they met, and my cousin was unable to utter coherent sentences while being taken with this unfairly beautiful person.”

“Right.”

“I would obviously like to give my cousin the best advice possible.”

“Right.”

“And I realize you’re just as single and lonely and pitifully sad but marginally less handsome than I am but I figured as my friend—”

“…Right.”

“—you would help me figure out how to ask Izuki Shun out on a date.”

“Right.” Kasamatsu looks at the ceiling like he is seeking holy introspection. “Wait, Izuki Shun?”

Moriyama belatedly realizes he screwed himself over and stares very pointedly at Kasamatsu, lips pursed into a faint frown as he tries to figure out if he would be envious of his fake hypothetically distant cousin if said cousin also had a crush on Izuki.

“He’s friends with Nakamura.”

“Izuki is an angel,” Moriyama says quietly to himself. “Truly a saint.”

“Anyway,” Kasamatsu cuts in, “Kise knows him too. He seems nice and he says embarrassing things out loud. I’m sure you’ll get along. Wish you well with your budding romance.”

Moriyama picks up his gym bag and swings it on his shoulder, jumping up and onto his feet with a flourish. Why, he thinks it's incredibly unfair that he’s the only one who’s never seen or heard of Izuki until recently. He figures it’s just fate playing a funny joke on him—he’s sure it’s a best for last sort of thing.

“See you,” he says in farewell, waving before jogging out of the locker room, out of the gym, and straight to the library to hole himself up in a cubicle with just a notebook and a single, ballpoint pen.

He scrawls out a preliminary title at the top and underlines it three times:

ROMANCING IZUKI SHUN.

-

Nakamura texts him back a day after Moriyama’s initial text with a simple, one-worded, no. And Moriyama thinks it’s very unfortunate that Nakamura is the least cute junior he knows (which is not an opinion stemming from how disappointed he is that Nakamura refuses to tell him what Izuki Shun’s favorite slow jazz song is). He will likely write Nakamura into his future autobiography as a terribly sullen young man with a penchant for turning into an angry werewolf during the full moon.

It’s not a huge deal, however, that he won’t be able to make asking Izuki out on a date perfect with the appropriate musical accompaniment. He figures since he is in a library and he is also banking on meeting Izuki in the library by chance, it’s probably better for him not to disrupt the rest of the student body during exam week by serenading Izuki with mood music playing in the background.

He’s done this a lot before. Not the whole harassing Nakamura thing but asking people out? He’s done it before. Moriyama is hardly a rookie when it comes to the world of romance and though his track record is far from perfect, he prides himself on his vast knowledge of heart-shaking pickup lines and his knack for knowing true love when he sees it.

It is precisely while Moriyama praises himself in his mind that he feels a sudden whoosh of déjà vu as none other than Izuki bumps into Moriyama in a library aisle, sending the huge stack of books in his arms tumbling to the ground.

“Ah!” Izuki yelps quietly, minding his manners in the library as he glances up at Moriyama with an apologetic smile. “Sorry, Moriyama-san. I keep crashing into you—literally!”

He kneels down soon after to start collecting the books from the floor and Moriyama follows suit, feeling his mind go blank almost instantaneously as Izuki says what he thinks is a thank you.

“I hope exam week isn’t making you testy, Moriyama-san. A lot of my friends are really buckling under the pressure but they don’t seem to appreciate me bringing them any belts as a joke.” Izuki glances up then to lock eyes with Moriyama, smiling good-naturedly and almost… expectantly?

“Haha,” Moriyama says a little too forcibly and a little too loudly. He swallows the lump in his throat and smiles. “Very nice, Izuki.”

Izuki beams and Moriyama thinks it is terrible how endearing that is.

His hand brushes against Izuki’s for maybe a second as they reach for the same book and he almost chokes despite how absolutely cliché it is. Izuki is blissfully unaware of his surroundings as he picks up the book, not even processing the way Moriyama’s hand retracts at the speed of light.

“…dying?” Izuki asks.

“Yes,” Moriyama says very gravely, “I am.”

“Me too,” Izuki replies with a sigh. “Studying is so hard to do these days.”

And Moriyama realizes he misheard the first time but he nods anyway, because Kasamatsu’s favorite The Smiths song is echoing at the back of his mind and all he can think is to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die alternatively sung as to study by your side is such a heavenly way to study.

“Would you like to sit together?” Izuki inquires with a tilt of his head.

“I would absolutely die to,” Moriyama says, wondering why his brain thought this was the appropriate way to combine I would love to and I am absolutely dying to.

He clears his throat as he thinks back to ROMANCING IZUKI SHUN and the all-nighter he spent just recently filling page after page with relevant pick-up lines to use if the opportunity ever arose.

Moriyama gets up onto his feet and watches as Izuki follows suit and thinks this is probably an opportunity and he is probably supposed to be seizing it.

“Izuki,” Moriyama says slowly.

“Yeah?”

“Do you need me to carry you?” he asks as soberly as he can manage.

“Carry me?”

“Well,” Moriyama starts, “I only assumed your legs would be tired from running through my mind all day…”

-

“Moriyama-san, are you still embarrassed?”

Moriyama hides his face behind another textbook he’s propped up on the table he’d previously found with Izuki. “No,” he says unconvincingly. “I am not.”

Izuki laughs quietly, much like the way he’d been laughing after Moriyama unleashed what he believed to be a powerful pick-up line. Moriyama figures it could have gone worse. Sure, Izuki started laughing and then scribbling down Moriyama’s beautiful line into what he thinks might have been a notebook dedicated entirely to puns and the like; and sure, maybe they were shushed violently by a pinch-faced student trying to study—but in the very least, he’s still here, sitting with Izuki Shun, very much so alive (and maybe this isn’t really a pro, now that he thinks about it).

Nakamura and Kasamatsu will laugh at him. He will likely have to change his name and flee the country to avoid the embarrassment.

“Moriyama-san,” Izuki calls out again in a whisper.

“Yes?”

“Moriyama-san.”

“…Yes?”

“Moriyama-san.”

This time, he puts the textbook down to address Izuki only to find that Izuki is leaning across the table so his face is right there, smiling at Moriyama like he didn’t just ignore his blatant flirting.

Moriyama clears his throat and wonders if he is red. “Izuki?”

“I couldn’t let you finish because we got in trouble,” Izuki explains with an apologetic laugh. “There’s a new coffee shop near where I live and—”

“And?” Moriyama repeats, mouth feeling dry.

“Aaaand… I would like it a latte if you’d go with me.”

Something explodes inside Moriyama’s body, which is probably concerning health-wise but he can’t be bothered with such frivolous thoughts when he is almost ninety-nine percent positive that Izuki Shun just asked him out on a date.

“You’re asking me out?”

“Yes,” Izuki replies, looking faintly embarrassed as he sits back properly in his seat across Moriyama’s. “Unless you pulled that awesome line on me because you wanted us to stay friends—”

“No!” Moriyama cuts in maybe a tad too loudly. “I just can’t believe you beat me to it.”

“Well, Moriyama-san, let’s just say your legs should be just as tired as mine!”

He plans on prefacing his riveting autobiography with something beautifully dramatic like:

My name is Moriyama Yoshitaka. I am but a humble university student. I believe in the power of love. I did not believe in love at first sight until I met…

“I wouldn’t buy it,” Nakamura says.

“Yeah, me neither,” Kasamatsu agrees.

“It’s a shame you both die in my autobiography,” Moriyama says sagely.

“You can’t call it an autobiography if you’re taking a copious amount of creative liberties.”

“Nakamura, you will be the first to go. It’s very unfortunate. I will write a beautiful eulogy for you.”

“It’s okay,” Izuki says brightly, looking up from one of his joke books to join in on the conversation, “I would buy your autobuyography!”

Kasamatsu groans as Moriyama positively beams in Izuki’s direction like he is the most beautiful, perfect thing to grace this otherwise terrible apartment.

Nakamura makes a very mature retching noise as Moriyama leans over to kiss Izuki’s temple, feeling very boastful of his selfless boyfriend who would buy his admittedly terrible autobiography to be. Despite the less than positive comments from his supposed friends, Moriyama knows better than anyone else that this—this entire, current stage of his life—is all very good. And maybe he’ll think back to how embarrassingly little it took for him to fall for Izuki Shun (who really was the only one doing the falling) and how embarrassingly little it took for them to start dating, but he knows more than anything that he’ll have his hands full thinking of how embarrassingly little it takes now for him to fall more and more for Izuki.

“You can pay me in kisses,” Moriyama says, partially because it is his nature to say such things and also partially to spite his roommates.

“What kind of currency is that?” Izuki asks. “Wait, okay—so, what if you asked me how my day was and I ripped a paper and told you it was teariffic…”
