SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

PLAY BALL! For this round, we'd like you to take inspiration from songs, sayings, poems, and other kinds of famous words.

Because this is our first full round, please read this post carefully before proceeding!

This round ends at 7PM on June 13 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES

• Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
  • Example: "Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!" -Kermit the Frog
  • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
  • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Yachi & Kiyoko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Yachi/Kiyoko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

There are a few little things Kinjou noticed about Imaizumi, even before they started dating.

One, Imaizumi's wrists are distressingly thin, just like the rest of him. It gets worse during the summer.

Two, when Imaizumi lies his face twitches up into a half smile and his shoulders sag.

Three, the mere mention of Midousuji Akira puts him on high alert.

Kinjou has watched his hackles raise and posture crumple, and if he were a dog his ears would be flattened against his head. All because of one person. Kinjou doesn't know, exactly, what happened between them, only that they had something very short lived and disastrous. Imaizumi is too affected for it to just have been a simple relationship

Kinjou cannot touch Imaizumi when he stands behind him unless he wants a quivering, hollow eyed pantomime of a boyfriend for the next few minutes, must be careful not to grip his hands too hard or criticize his cycling too much, no matter how well-intentioned.

Kinjou has never wanted to hurt Imaizumi. Midousuji already has, and there isn't anything he can do about that.

Once, when Onoda, pure and precious Onoda, mentions that Akira-kun is coming over to watch the Love Hime finale, Imaizumi has to leave the room. Kinjou finds him behind the clubroom, hunched over and puking his guts out.

He stops watching Love Hime, and when Kinjou next borrows his iPod he notices all the songs have been completely expunged.

Kinjou hates Midousuji for taking that away from Imaizumi, for worming his way into Onoda's life, too, ever closer to Imaizumi's sanctuary of Sohoku.

He starts inviting Imaizumi over to his house after school, and then when he graduates, over to his dorm on the weekends. One night, Imaizumi tells him that Midousuji came to a Sohoku practice, is sleeping at Onoda's house now, and asks if he can stay the night with his fearful, shaking voice.

Kinjou rocks him to sleep while he cries, and hates, and hates.

When they start dating, two years have passed since Imaizumi and Midousuji had come together in that great and terrible collision. Imaizumi stands taller, with more flesh on his face and with steadier hands. He looks tired, too, but Kinjou supposes that is what fighting every moment you're awake does to a person. Kinjou has watched him progress further and further from the frightened rabbit Midousuji made him into, and it's with familiar relief that he realizes, Oh, I'm in love with him

Kinjou doesn't know what happened between them, exactly, although he feels like he should have stopped it before it started. There's nothing he can do now but be there, with gentle hands and gentler words, being what Midousuji wasn't.

The first time Imaizumi kisses him, it lasts for less than a second and isn't repeated for two more weeks. It's no bother to Kinjou, he'll wait. For as long as Imaizumi needs. Maybe he'll never be alright with it - his eyes still get that faraway look when Kinjou touches his shoulders, sometimes, if there's been another reminder earlier in the day. And that's fine, too. Imaizumi is safe with Kinjou, will always be.

And the next time Kinjou sees Midousuji Akira, he's punching him in his smug fucking face.

This song's instrumental first minute is utterly magical. I swear. Picture any destination, or travel/beauty of nature montage, it will FIT. (And Free! has really beautiful scenery + water animations). But yeah, this song is really beautiful and up-lifting since this was the feeling I got when Haru's vision "dimmed", and you could even see it in his eyes how it dulled, and then BOOM an explosion of colors and light when he found a dream worth striving for and found peace with it.

(I hope you enjoy! I veered somewhat off prompt but I hope this is something like what you wanted!!)

A tissue appears at Yui's shoulder, offered by a delicate hand, and she does her best to pretend she doesn't need it. Her eyes are red and puffy and there's not much she can do to hide the tear tracks without it but she has pride. She still has some pride.

"I'm sorry, you really-" Yui sniffs and swallows to hold down more tears. "You really don't have to!"

Shimizu does her the favour of keeping her expression neutral and not offering pity or sympathy, either of which would ruin the scrap of control she's clinging to. "The boys cry, too."

Yui manages a tentative smile at that. "Do they? I can't imagine Daichi..." Another wave of tears hits her as she says Daichi's name, he's going to be so understanding. She takes the tissue and rubs it over each eye, finishing with a loud blow of her nose - if her face wasn't red from her misery it would be red from embarrassment. Of all the girls to make a fool of herself in front of, it had to be one as calm and collected and dainty as Shimizu.

A flicker of an emotion passes over Shimizu's face - not one Yui can place - before she tucks it away under her cool demeanour. "You really like him, don't you?"

"No!" she blurts out, then scrambles to collect herself. "I mean yes, but it's not. He's only-" Shimizu's mouth curves into a soft circle and Yui's words choke to a stop.

"I didn't mean to presume," Shimizu says as she tucks her hair behind her ear.

"He doesn't like me like that." It's funny how she can say that just fine, almost with a laugh, but when she imagines her friend telling her she was a good captain she - Shoot.

"That was my last one, but maybe..." Shimizu unclips the flap on her bag and digs to the bottom.

Yui shakes her head trying to dislodge her tears and the thoughts that brought them, hastily wiping her already sodden tissue over her eyes again. "I'll just use toilet paper, Shimizu-chan. Please don't worry." She breathes in deep, an awful breath that sticks to her throat, but it does the trick, forces her heart to calm enough that she can think. "Do you want to g-" her voice catches but she forces through it "-get something to eat?"

Shimizu's head jerks up from her quest for more absorbent materials, for once her expression is clear and Yui can see how pleased she is in her surprise, the corners of her eyes lighting up. "If you wouldn't prefer to go home?"

Shaking her head fervently, Yui tries to get the words she wants in an order that will make sense when she says them. "I'd rather have company right now so I don't start up again, and if you're offering and don't mind eating with a mess I'd be honoured!" By the end of her mess of a reply she's got her eyes jammed shut and her hands clenched shut, too worked up and upset to pretend this isn't a big deal to her.

A sound cuts through her tension and Yui peeks open an eye. Shimizu's shoulders are hunched and her glasses are slipping down her nose as she giggles in tiny breaths. "In I'd be honoured to go with you," she says, light in her eyes as she fixes them back on Yui.

This is really, really nicely done, and everything I could have wanted out of a fill for this prompt. Kinjou's POV is the perfect choice because you've captured his calm, quiet observation and empathy so well. Imaizumi's reactions are really believable and it just, makes my heart hurt how good and understanding Kinjou is of him. It's a rough read but so, rewarding for me, I got to the "Oh, I'm in love with him" and softly screamed into my hands because that's perfect.

(It's maybe relevant to know that kinima is my secret, quiet OTP and all I ever want is Kinjou caring for Imaizumi and this delivers on my desires perfectly, I'm so glad and thankful.)

Oh man I'm so glad you liked it! I was a bit nervous going into this bc I was like, "does this person want a serious fill or a silly fill, should i make the sex just really laughably terrible, what do" and then two hours later I had what I wrote and I was just like

It was hella fun to do nonetheless, and just imagining Iwaizumi the morning after drinking coffee and thudding his head against the dashboard as Oikawa chatters away about some nonsense... who knows maybe I'll write a sequel B)
