Bonus Round 1: Quotes

Bonus Round 1: Quotes

SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

PLAY BALL! For this round, we'd like you to take inspiration from songs, sayings, poems, and other kinds of famous words.

Because this is our first full round, please read this post carefully before proceeding!

This round ends at 7PM on June 13 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!" -Kermit the Frog
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Yachi & Kiyoko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Yachi/Kiyoko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • You cannot fill your team's prompts or your own prompts.

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Oikawa turned over on his bed to see that its previous occupant had already disappeared. The other side was left in pristine condition; the lack of a disturbance in the bed sheets almost negated the act of last night’s activities.

Last night.

Oikawa ran a hand down his tired face as he drew his blankets closer, trying to ignore the soreness of his own body and the aching in his chest.

- x - x -

He came home late tonight (again).

This was nothing new, and they went through the motions. Oikawa would ask how his day went, and Kisumi would respond in kind.

Kisumi’s enthusiastic re-telling of the day’s events would be more authentic if he could only maintain eye contact with him. Amethyst eyes darted to one side of the room, glanced at his face, and then back down to his food.

“…and then do you know what Rin said? That joker, he said-”

“That you shouldn’t leave Sousuke alone without a guide.”

“Yeah! ...W-wait have I already told you this story before?”

Only about three times now, but Oikawa kept that to himself. It was better to let mindless chatter fill the room than to be stuck in a silent one.

After all, thoughts appeared to be louder in a quieter room, and both men feared that their thoughts would project so loudly that the other would hear them. Unvoiced opinions of how strained things were and how quickly their little world was burning itself inside out.

- x - x -

There’s a saying about bottling up your feelings. And, here’s the thing about bottles – a solid entity – it has a fixed volume. Pour too much into the bottle and it will overflow, granted that the top is open for the water to flow out.

But what if you put a cork on this bottle, to stop the overflow of emotions, to prevent the hurt from leaking out. Now you possess an object that’s building pressure within, and if there’s no way for this pressure to escape, it will force its way out.

And the bottle will shatter.

- x - x -

Oikawa stormed into his bedroom as a disgruntled Kisumi followed close behind.

“Look, Oikawa don’t take it personally.”

“I’m not!”

“You’re upset though.”

“Wow, great deductive skill. What tipped you off?”

“Are you really that put off because he’s stopping volleyball? Listen, you’re a great mentor, he’s had a great time under your care and I thank you for that, but my little brother wants to try other things, he’s lost interest.”

“Oh, well you’d know all about getting tired of things and losing interest!” Oikawa spat back viciously mirroring Kisumi in his movements. A step back for every time the pink-haired man moved forward.

“Wait, what?”

“Oh, don’t act like you don’t know. You don’t think I’ve noticed how we barely see each other anymore? I wake up, you’re gone! You come back, and often I’m already asleep! I honestly can’t remember the last time we had a decent conversation that didn’t feel so one-sided.” Oikawa’s cheeks were tinged with red as his chest heaved, lungs working harder to get oxygen circulating after his long-winded rant.

Kisumi stood there on the other side of the room gaping.

Say something.

Kisumi’s mouth moved to form words, but nothing came out. He snapped his mouth shut as emotions flickered in his eyes, switching too quickly for Oikawa to get a proper read. Hurt, sadness, guilt, regret?

Say anything.

“Well?”

Say that we can work through this, that we can fix this.

Kisumi was alarmingly quiet, his posture rigid. They stayed this way for a few more excruciating minutes before Kisumi finally broke his stance and sighed, the tension bleeding out of his shoulders as he sagged a little. He ran a hand through his hair before muttering, “So, I guess this is it then huh?”

What.

Oikawa was taken aback, where was the fiery response he expected. He thought Kisumi would at least try to salvage their relationship (or maybe it never was one), or even argue heatedly about how he was thinking too much about it. Oikawa wanted Kisumi to tell him it’s okay, they could do better, but instead he wanted to-

“…give up?”

Kisumi looked up and locked eyes with him before his gaze softened. “I’m sorry, I thought if I pulled away gradually and took my self out of the picture, this would make it easier for you.”

“Make what easier?”

“Letting go.”

The ache in his chest came back, but this time it felt twice as painful.

Kisumi continued on, despite how each word felt like it lodged itself deeper and deeper into Oikawa’s skin.

“You’re going to hate me now, but this is probably for the better. We got into this relationship expecting different things. I’m not,” He grimaced, “…I’m not ready to settle down for anything long term right now. I do have plans for the future, but it’s just—“

The future doesn’t include an ‘us’.

Everything was out in the open now, Oikawa’s pent up frustrations and accusations hung heavily in the air along with Kisumi’s guilt-ridden confession. He felt suffocated from the weight of their words. He needed to leave. Now.

Oikawa grabbed his phone and made his way to the front door, quickly putting on his shoes and grabbing his keys before exiting the apartment, ignoring the startled cries of “where are you going at this late hour?”

He needed to get away from the situation, clear his head, and maybe re-assess this whole thing with a calm mindset. He definitely was not in the best shape to make any life-altering decisions.

God, today was such a clusterfuck of shitty things to happen.

- x - x -

It turns out Oikawa didn’t have to make any decisions. It was made for him.

Upon his return to the apartment the following morning, he could sense a shift, a change. The entire place felt colder.

Emptier.

Glancing around the rooms, Oikawa noticed how Kisumi’s personal belongings were missing from their spots. It left open gaps and holes in the shelves and countertops. Morbidly similar to the gaps and holes left in him from yesterday’s argument and from everything else that didn’t work out in his life.

All the fire held within from yesterday had been snuffed out; Oikawa felt a month’s worth of exhaustion creeping up the frame of his body. He shivered, but he wasn’t sure if that was from the coldness (loneliness) emanating from the room or if this was stemming from something much deeper.

Nevertheless, the storm hit and the destruction it left behind in its wake prompted Oikawa to pick up the shattered pieces.

To start over anew.

- x - x -

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.

But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Notes: I had a mighty need to fill this. I’m so sorry.

To say that Hinata was surprised when Kageyama bust in through his bedroom door unannounced was a bit of an understatement. It’s not as if Kageyama never visited – he was over all the time – but normally he at least texted first. Hinata checked his phone to make sure that he hadn’t gotten a text (he was fairly certain he hadn’t – he was doing his math homework, and so he was checking his phone quite frequently for distractions). Not finding a text he looked back to Kageyama, who seemed to be looking at him with an equal amount of confusion.

Hinata frowned. “This… this is my house, isn’t it?”

Kageyama said nothing, just threw his bag down and shut the door to Hinata’s room.

“Yeah, it is my house,” Hinata said with a bit of reflection. “This is my room.”

Kageyama simply brushed past him and threw himself face first into Hinata’s bed.
“My bed,” Hinata noted, pointing at him.

At this, Kageyama found it in him to groan and rolled himself so that he was covered in the blankets.

“And that’s my blanket,” Hinata said. “Are you going to tell me why you’re here?”

Kageyama may have said something, but it was lost in a muffle of blankets.

“Hmm.” Hinata leaned over to pull Kageyama’s bag closer to him. He dug around inside until he found Kageyama’s phone. Kageyama either didn’t hear the beeping of Hinata messing with his phone, or he didn’t care much about the invasion of privacy.

Hinata kept digging until he found the most recent calendar appointment. “Oh, right! How was the date with Suga-senpai?”

A loud groan made its way past the muffle of the blankets.

“So, is that why you’re hiding in my bed?”

A less forceful grunt came as the answer.

“Bakageyama, there’s no way it went that bad!” Hinata said. “There’s no way even you could screw it up so bad that you have to make yourself into a bed burrito.”

The next groan almost sounded like words. Hinata was almost sure ‘you weren’t there’ was in there somewhere.

“Well, what happened?” Hinata asked.

The Kageyama roll just tightened around itself, as if Kageyama was slowly succeeding in his attempt to blink out of existence.

“Okay, I’ll just guess then,” Hinata said. He hummed, tapping a finger to his chin. “Did you spill a drink on them?”

A negative sounding grunt was the reply.

“Then… maybe you spilled their food on the ground…”

Another negative grunt.

“Oh, oh, I got it. There was a candle at the table and you knocked it down and burned down the whole restaurant!”

The Kageyama roll unfurled just slightly. “Why are all your guesses fixated on me being clumsy?”

Hinata shrugged, even though Kageyama couldn’t see him. “I dunno. Seems like things you would do.”

“I’m not clumsy, dumbass. Those are things you would do.”

“No way!” Hinata said. “Besides, I’m not the one hiding in shame right now.”

Kageyama groaned and curled tighter into the blankets again.

“Oh, come on! We were making progress!” Hinata sighed. “Are you ever going to come out of my blanket?”

The muffled reply sounded vaguely like ‘no, never.’

“Then how are you going to play volleyball?” Hinata countered.

“I’ll just cut eye holes in it,” Kageyama said.

“No way! That’s like my favorite blanket!” Hinata protested. “But hiding your face might have it’s advantages.”

Kageyama definitely muttered something angrily, but Hinata couldn’t make out the words.

“Oh, come on, this is ridiculous!” Hinata jumped onto his bed, on top of Kageyama. Kageyama protested with a grunt.

Hinata pulled at the blanket. “Come on. Just get out and tell me what happened.”

“No,” came the less-muffled reply.

There was a lot of pushing and pulling over the blankets, until finally Hinata pulled them off of Kageyama’s face.

“Aha!” Hinata shouted. “Alright, I win! Now you have to tell me!”

“I didn’t agree to that,” Kageyama muttered.

“Come oooon, Bakageyama!” Hinata whined.

“I…” Kageyama sighed. “So, we were at the restaurant…”

Hinata smiled. “So far so good.”

“And I was… really nervous…” Kageyama continued.

“Obviously,” Hinata said.

“It was okay until the date was almost over, but I… really had to go…”

Hinata frowned. “What do you mean? You had something else to do?”

“No, I mean, go… to the bathroom…” Kageyama said, looking away.

“Oh,” Hinata said. “So what?”

“Well, Suga-senpai was still talking, and I didn’t want to get up in the middle of the conversation. That would be rude,” Kageyama said.

“Okay,” Hinata said, as if he didn’t seem to agree.

“But there was… pressure building…”

“So, you had bad gas?”

“Yeah…”

“Oh no…”

“So, I –”

“You didn’t!” Hinata said.

“I just thought I could let out a little bit,” Kageyama said, his face reddening. “Nothing noticeable.”

“Kageyama, you did not!” Hinata nearly shouted. “Did you?”

Kageyama frowned. “It… it wasn’t as quiet as I thought it would be.”

“You farted?!”

“... It was really loud…”

“Oh my god,” Hinata gasped. He pressed his lips together to stop from smiling… It didn’t work. Soon the giggles escaped and he buried his face into the blankets covering Kageyama, though they just barely muffled his laughter.

“It’s not funny, dumbass!” Kageyama shouted.

“You’re right, you’re right,” Hinata said, sitting up and trying to compose himself. The attempt utterly failed though and laughter bubbled up again. “No! You’re wrong, sorry. It’s hilarious!”

“It’s not!” Kageyama shouted. “I completely embarrassed myself in front of Suga-san and now they’ll never want to talk to me again!”

“Oh come on! It’s Suga-senpai! They’ll understand,” Hinata said.

“No, they won’t!” Kageyama protested. “Because it’s dumb. I’m dumb. They’ll never want to see me again after that.”

“Yes, they will. It would be so dumb if they never wanted to see you again. How would we practice?”

“It doesn’t matter anyway. I never want to see them again because if I do I’ll just die from embarrassment.”

“Bakageyama, it’s not that bad!”

“Yes it is!”

“No!”

“Yes!”

Hinata’s ‘no’ was interrupted but Kageyama’s phone beeping. Kageyama was still mostly wrapped up, so Hinata was free to dive at it for him.

“Oh, it’s a text from Suga-san,” Hinata said.

Kageyama groaned and rolled back into the blanket.

“They say that they had fun,” Hinata said.

“Wait, what?” Kageyama said, still hiding.

The phone beeped again. “Oh, another text. They say they want to go out again sometime.”

Kageyama unrolled slightly. “Wait, really?”

Hinata nodded and hummed a ‘yes’. “It’s okay though. I’ll just tell them how you never want to see them again.”

“Wait, no!” Kageyama tried to get free of the blankets, and lunged inelegantly at Hinata.

“I’m sending it!” Hinata said, barely managing to dodge him while typing.

“Give me the phone!”

here comes team rinrei filling for rinrei lol

-----

Rin had a secret.

Something no one would believe if he told them.

Something only one person could help him through.

He was afraid of flying.

------

"Rin-san, our flight will be fine. You've done this plenty of times before." Rei placed a hand tenderly on Rin's back. "Why do you have anxiety now?"

Rin sat up from where he was hunched over in the airport seats, his head clutched in his hands. He exhaled a shaky breath, his gaze meeting Rei's. "I've always gotten anxiety about flying on planes. I've heard a lot of horror stories and that really doesn't help." He glanced around the gate, jealous of all the people that were completely calm, or at least holding themselves better than he was at the moment. He wished he could have that kind of control over his anxiety. "This is such a stupid situation. I've done this so many times before. God, you probably think I'm so lame." Rin dropped his hands toward the ground and sighed.

Rei leaned over in the seat and put an arm around Rin's shoulder, resting his other hand on his knee. "Absolutely not, Rin-san. I find it very admirable that you face your fears every time you fly. Your dream requires you to travel frequently, and you still pursue it even though it frightens you." He ran his knuckles gently over Rin's cheek. "Plus I'm here with you; we'll get through it together."

Rin's expression melted into a calm smile. "Thank you, Rei. I really need your logic sometimes." He wrapped an arm around Rei's waist and laid a kiss on his cheek.

Rei chuckled quietly. "Yes, we compliment each other quite well, don't we?" The smile on his face was pure sunshine in Rin's eyes.

"Japan Airlines flight 771 to Sydney is now boarding." the PA system rang out.

Rin's chest tightened once more and he looked to Rei for strength.

Rei simply smiled peacefully. Rei - his beacon of hope and light and logic.

"Come on, Rin-san, everything will be fine. I'm right here next to you." He stood, taking hold of Rin's hand and picking up his bag in the other. He slung it over his shoulder.

Rin rose from the seat and picked up his own bag. He followed as Rei led him to the receptionist at the boarding gate, their hands entwined, and Rin felt like he could take on the entire sky and all the stars with Rei by his side.

The receptionist checked their tickets and sent them on their way. "Have a nice flight!" she said cheerfully.

Rin looked at her briefly, "Thanks," then back to Rei. "I will."
