Bonus Round 5: Remixes

Bonus Round 5: Remixes

SASO 2016 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Congrats, this is the home stretch! You've worked hard and created hundreds of fanworks for sports anime fandom to enjoy. This round encourages you to look back at everything the SASO has made and use it as inspiration.

This round ends at 7PM on August 8 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • Choose a fanwork created by other participants in a previous main or bonus round of SASO and create a new piece based on it. You could create a fanart of another work, an FST inspired by a piece’s style, retell another person’s fanfic from another point of view, create a new fanfic inspired by a great piece of art... go wild!
  • You cannot remix your teammates' works.
  • You must have permission from the original creator. There's a blanket permissions post here (feel free to add yourself to it!), or you can leave a comment on their original post asking for permission.
  • You must include a link to the original work in your post.
  • Since all fills are based on previous works, there will be no prompts for this round. Simply post your fill as a comment in response to this post.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

The city lies in ruins, but Kageyama’s kekkai still holds.

A light wind picks up the scent of cigarettes, drifts it across the distance toward him; Oikawa’s long slim fingers are wrapped around a lighter, and the quiet clicks of the metal wheel nails Kageyama to where he stands, a steady rhythm that fills him, pulls his gaze so desperately and completely to the slow, measured movements of Oikawa’s hand; the elegant bend of the wrist, the slide along the cigarette to the wet shine of his mouth. (It looks like blood, Kageyama tries not to think.) Oikawa doesn’t look at him, but there’s a small smile on the tip of his lips; it hasn’t changed at all, it’s still full of the promise of teeth.

Kageyama breathes in deep, like that small wisp of smoke could fill his lungs enough to drown him, and suddenly Oikawa is there, a blur of illusion, the warm press of him close, like he’s always been the shadow that trails him.

(Or was Kageyama the shadow now. He doesn’t understand himself anymore, or maybe understands too clearly, his focus too straightforward and wanting; Kageyama doesn’t care to look too closely at the young idiot he used to be, does his best to chase after the bright memory of Hinata’s laughter instead.)

(Kageyama unconsciously touches the bandages that cover his missing eye; it doesn’t always work.)

“It’s been a while, Tobio-chan.” Oikawa runs fingertips lightly over Kageyama’s bandages and there’s something almost regretful in his look; Kageyama knows better now, though. He’s learned so much. “Are you here to finally defeat me? That’s what your wish is, isn’t it.”

There’s blood on Oikawa’s fingers, bright red and fresh; Kageyama takes the offered cigarette anyway, lets the taste of mint and copper and bitter smoke fill his mouth.

I only wanted to follow you, Kageyama doesn’t say, instead sets his features grimly because the fight is still his, and he tries not to think of how Oikawa is amazing, even now, as the claws of his magic cut deep into Kageyama’s skin.

Kageyama tastes only blood after that; when the razor tendrils of the sakura tree binds him tight and breathless, when the tips of Oikawa’s fingers brush gentle over his heart, when the red that trickles from Oikawa’s mouth smears across the corner of his own, like Oikawa is trying to push the unexpected words right into Kageyama’s mouth, shocked open and still.

The weight of Oikawa’s body in his arms drags him down, and Kageyama doesn’t know if he should remove his hand from where it’s thrust right through Oikawa’s heart; so he stays like this, the other arm wrapping around Oikawa’s back to pull him as close as he can, like Kageyama is fifteen again and he’s still chasing after the breadth of Oikawa’s shoulders, the teasing lilt of his voice.

The bridge is falling apart around them and every time Kageyama’s hand shifts, the awful wet noise of blood is too loud in his ear, and he wishes, he wishes, that it was his own heart being pulled apart in Oikawa’s beautiful hands, wrapped tight in Oikawa’s beautiful fingers.

The kekkai falls to nothing.

--

When Hinata finally reaches him, Kageyama is only meters away, hunched broken and low to the ground, but it might as well be the vastness of the sea that lies grey and unmoving between them. Kageyama is unreadable; or rather, he doesn’t look to Hinata anymore, draws the blinds so dark and close that when he looks out even the low pale sun is now too bright in his eye.

(Days later, Yamaguchi puts all his pride on the line; he barely makes it home, and Tsukishima does what he thinks is the only thing he can do, leaves the hospital bed where Yamaguchi sleeps for where Kuroo is waiting, and it’s so early in the morning the birds have yet to sing their loss.)

(Karasuno doesn’t fly again, after that.)
