Bonus Round 2: AUs
Bonus Round 2: AUs
SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).
This round is made for exploration of all those "what-if?" scenarios, like "what if my favorite sports anime was actually a spaghetti western?" or "what if everything was the same except everyone was actually a car?"
This round ends at 7PM on June 27 EDT. Countdown Timer.
RULES

- An AU could be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [team] didn't win the Inter High in season 1, but [other team] did instead?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g.s pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
- Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
- Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

FILL: TEAM AOYAGI HAJIME/TESHIMA JUNTA, G
Word count: 1106
Warnings: None.
Aoyagi expected high school to go much the same way as middle school. Keep quiet, keep to himself, struggle through classes and make up for it with textbooks at night, hide his hearing aids under his hair. Maybe bike. He didn’t expect to make any friends. It was exhausting, trying to figure out what they were saying and how to communicate back, and the social isolation was easier to bear than the awkwardness and embarrassment that came from being the one person who couldn’t speak properly. Or hear.
That plan went out the window on the morning of his first day, when he was locking up his bicycle, though he didn’t realize it until later. He hadn’t known there was anyone behind him. He jumped, just a little, when he saw someone standing close out of the corner of his eye, but the other boy didn’t seem to notice and kept talking.
“-name?” He was looking at Aoyagi expectantly, and Aoyagi tried not to panic.
“Ao…yagi. Hajime,” he pronounced carefully, the way he’d practiced. Hajime – the one and only. The other boy grinned and started chattering again. Aoyagi tried to follow, at first, but he was speaking too quietly and too quickly and he couldn’t make out the sounds or the words on his lips. Eventually, he just gave up, turned away, and walked to class.
It turned out that the chatty boy was in class 1-4, too. Aoyagi strained to hear his name from the teacher’s roll call – it was quieter in the classroom than outside, he could hear a little bit better, but he still watched her mouth closely – Teshima? Something like that.
Teshima sat beside him and smiled, but luckily he didn’t have a chance to try to initiate a conversation before class started. Aoyagi focused on trying to follow the lesson, feeling the typical headache building up behind his eyes when the teacher turned to face the board and he had to rely on his useless ears, and by the time the lunch bell rang he was grumpy and dreading Teshima’s inevitable attempts at small talk.
Teshima tapped him on the shoulder. “-nt to go outside?”
Aoyagi did want to go outside – it would be quieter, probably, away from the busy classroom, so his hearing aids might work a little better – but he shook his head, in the hope Teshima would go anyway and leave him alone. Instead, Teshima just shrugged and stayed in his seat. Aoyagi tried not to let the irritation show on his face by busying himself with his bento. He could feel Teshima’s eyes on him; he was probably supposed to respond to some statement or question he hadn’t heard. There was an anxious lump in the back of his throat and he tried to swallow it down with some rice.
Teshima tapped him on the shoulder again and Aoyagi flicked his eyes over automatically.
Are you going to join the bicycle racing club, Teshima’s lips said, smiling enthusiastically. Aoyagi shrugged. He took another bite of rice. He wanted to, but he hadn’t decided if it was worth the trouble yet.
“-both should!” he heard vaguely, and went back to staring awkwardly at Teshima’s mouth. Teshima grinned, lopsided, then said, You don’t talk much, huh?
Aoyagi shook his head, but before he could turn away Teshima laughed – he could hear that, almost – and said, Everyone says I talk too much, we’ll make a good team. Aoyagi wasn’t so sure about that.
Until after school, when Teshima once again caught up to him at the bicycle racks. Aoyagi watched him, a little wary, but Teshima didn’t try to talk to him, so after a brief standoff Aoyagi went back to unlocking his bike and putting on his helmet. He startled badly when he turned around and Teshima was suddenly right in front of him, rather than standing off by the rack.
“Sorry!” Teshima said, flicking one hand out from his forehead, seemingly just as surprised by Aoyagi’s reaction. Aoyagi gaped.
Um, Teshima seemed to say, and he shuffled one foot awkwardly, before looking at Aoyagi with a questioning expression and tapping his ear. Aoyagi felt himself stiffen and Teshima swiftly backpedaled, holding up his hands in a conciliatory gesture.
Then, he brought his hands in front of his chest and said, Do you sign? And Aoyagi’s mouth dropped open.
How do you know how to do that? his hands asked, and Teshima grinned.
My little brother is Deaf. You were acting just like he does when people try to talk to him so I wondered. That explains why you’re so quiet. He punctuated the last part with another grin, and this time Aoyagi tentatively grinned back.
I’ve never met anyone at school who could sign, he said.
Teshima winked. Now you have!
After some needling from Teshima, they joined the bicycle club together. It was a little easier than he’d been dreading, having someone to translate for him after practice and to speak for them both. For their team of two. Teshima had been right, after all – they did make a good team. Classes were easier, too, when he knew he could rely on Teshima’s more complete notes and sharper mind to clarify the things that he missed. He was a much better teacher than the textbooks Aoyagi was used to struggling through after school, and Aoyagi’s grades improved markedly.
Aoyagi preferred not to sign in public – he didn’t like the way it drew stares, so he let Teshima talk for him and watched his lips, but even when they were alone together, it was always Teshima who initiated their conversations, just as chatty with his hands as he was with his mouth. He was easy to understand – precise with his movements in a way that Aoyagi was not, and very expressive with his face and mouth. Aoyagi liked watching him talk, and he liked that even with his hands, Teshima didn’t mind that he never had a lot to say.
But, after their spectacular loss at their second-year training camp, after things started to change between them until they were far closer than just friends, and Aoyagi started looking at his lips for reasons other than communication, Aoyagi was the first to say it. They were watching a video from the previous Interhigh, studying the competition for their senpai, and during the break between legs Aoyagi carefully said “Junta,” out loud, the way he’d practiced, to get his attention. He rubbed his right hand over the back of his left fist, and Teshima went red to the roots of his hair.
I love you, too, he signed back.

I've had the long-standing headcanon that Teshima's nonverbal communication skills are so strong because his little brother is deaf and they've had lots of practice, so I freaked out a bit when I saw your prompt :p

can i just say i love that other people have deaf/hoh hcs for aoyagi? ;___; they hit such a personal and special place in my heart, augh. i love it so much.
aoyagi's social awkwardness is definitely on par! i was deeply embarrassed by my aids—when i chose to wore them—and absolutely dreaded anyone finding out, mostly because i was ashamed to have them. i hid mine under my hair too! communicating with people verbally was also difficult (i would often miss what people say or mishear things, especially if it was noisy bc deaf people can't single out particular noises a lot of the time; we lack hearing depth perception, basically). his feelings reside very deeply with what i felt back in middle and high school and still feel today at times: a mix of self-loathing, embarrassment, desperation to keep up with conversation, etc.
your depiction of aoyagi is actually hitting me in a very personal place. his problems/struggles were and are my own, uhuhu. ;____; i really like it and think it's pretty accurate!
if aoyagi is using his aids, that means sounds in his environment get louder in volume, so i don't doubt that aoyagi can /hear/ what is being said... but it may be layered over by other noises in the environment, making it hard to distinguish what is being said versus hearing it. does that make sense? i hope it does... if not, feel free to ask! there are definitely more sophisticated hearing aids that have programs or functions developed to help a person single out particular voices but i don't know the efficacy of those... and that gets way into technical detail.
T2 BABIES SIGNING TOGETHER. OH MY SWEET HEART. LORD. KSJFLKDS i'm not a signer and don't know (japanese) sign language myself but have always wanted to learn and it is a way of communicating for a lot of d/Deaf people! i can't attest to the accuracy of its use in your fic but gahhh, thank you for putting it in. T___T
THIS WAS OVERALL VERY VERY CUTE AND THE WAY THAT JUNTA JUST KIND OF BARGES INTO AOYAGI'S WORLD AND ADJUSTS TO HIM INSTEAD OF AOYAGI HAVING TO DO IT?? GAH. SO SWEET. thank you for this gem!! i enjoyed reading it so much!! *____*
