Bonus Round 2: AUs

Bonus Round 2: AUs

SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

This round is made for exploration of all those "what-if?" scenarios, like "what if my favorite sports anime was actually a spaghetti western?" or "what if everything was the same except everyone was actually a car?"

This round ends at 7PM on June 27 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms.
  • An AU could be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [team] didn't win the Inter High in season 1, but [other team] did instead?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g.s pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

FILL: TEAM FUKUTOMI JUICHI/KINJOU SHINGO, G

Word Count: 2286
Tags: So… once upon a time, I used to work for a major office supply store chain… In the copy and print section… I may have started drawing on personal experience for some of these scenarios...

10:35 AM

Kageyama kind of hates working on Sundays. Most people do, because it’s always either super busy or super dead, and they’re always understaffed because of the latter. On top of that, the store is only open from eleven AM to seven PM, so instead of splitting it between two shifts, everyone works a slightly longer shift.

He kind of likes being alone in his section though. He works in the Copy and Print, so he can get all of the complex jobs done while there are no customers and no one else it his section to bump elbows with. He likes the quiet.

Kageyama grabs a pile a freshly printed papers and plops them down next to the binding machine. He falls into a nice rhythm with it; pull the first few pages, straighten them, punch the holes, pull the next few pages. In the silence, the noise of the process makes is satisfying; the “ch” sound of shifting paper, and the loud “thunk” of the hole puncher.

Ch-ch KaTHUNK

Ch-ch KaTHUNK

Ch-ch –

“KA...GE...YA...MA!”

Kageyama stops and stares at the wall. He knows if he turns around, he’ll see Hinata flopping onto the counter like a dead fish.

The reason Kageyama kind of hates working Sundays is because Hinata is always working in the Tech section, right next to his. And he never has anything better to do than bug Kageyama.

“I’m bored,” Hinata mumbles. The muffling of his voice tells Kageyama his face is smushed against the counter.

“I know,” Kageyama says.

KaTHUNK

Hinata looks up at the noise. “Can I help you with the kathunky thing?”

“No.”

“Please?”

“No.”

“Why is it so big and loud anyway?” Hinata asks. “It’s just for papers.”

Kageyama has wondered the same thing for ages, but he isn’t about to mention that. “It’s industrial,” Kageyama answers.

“That sounds like an excuse for the fact that you don’t know,” Hinata says.

Kageyama refuses to look at him. “Don’t be stupid.”

11:16 AM

“Can I help you with anything now?”

“No.”

An extra sense that Kageyama has gained for knowing exactly when Hinata is messing with something he shouldn’t be makes the back of his neck tingle. He turns to see Hinata messing with the switches on the laminator.

“I could laminate something,” Hinata says.

“Don’t mess with that!” Kageyama marches over, and turns it off. “You’ll melt the rollers like that!”

Hinata’s face lights up.

“No!”

12:23 PM

“Do you think the manager is actually here?” Hinata asks. He’s fanning through the piles of colored paper, and putting them all back in the wrong spots.

Kageyama takes the paper away from him and files it back into place. “Of course he is. Don’t be dumb.”

“I never see him on Sundays,” Hinata continues.

“He’s in his office,” Kageyama says.

Hinata’s eyes narrow. “Maybe he has a secret tunnel in his office. To sneak out. I bet he just wants to scare us into thinking he’s around so we’ll behave.”

“Some of us don’t need to be scared to do our job,” Kageyama says.

Hinata thinks about this. “Nah, I bet you’re still scared of the manager. He’s like twice as scary as you, and you’re pretty scary.”

“Hey!”

1:27 PM

“You have Photoshop on this computer right?” Hinata is sitting on the counter, and has swivelled the computer to face him.

“Yeah,” Kageyama admits.

“Can I use it?” Hinata asks. “Please? You’re not using this computer right? Please please please?”

Kageyama huffs. Technically there are two other computers, and while that one is the only one with Photoshop, he doesn’t foresee needing it in the near future. “Fine.”

“Yay!” Hinata pulls out his phone and aims it at Kageyama. “Smile! I’m gonna Photoshop us being somewhere that isn’t boring.”

Kageyama does not smile.

Hinata takes the picture anyway. “Perfect! It’s just how you always look.”

1:34 PM

“Hey, Kageyama. Can you teach me how Photoshop works?”

2:10 PM

Kageyama has only just managed to dial the phone when Hinata pops his head over the counter.

“Are you ordering lunch?” Hinata asks.

“Yeah,” Kageyama mutters.

“Let me order too?” he asks. “And then get mine for me when you go? I’ll give you the money! Please!”

“It’s already ringing, and you don’t know where I’m ordering from,” Kageyama protests.

Hinata rolls his eyes. “Of course I know where you’re ordering from. Give me the phone!”

Kageyama sighs, but hands it over.

Hinata greets them when he answers the phone. “Hi, yeah, ordering for pick-up. I want a pad see lew with pork. Five spice.”

Kageyama glares at him. “You don’t like it that spicy.”

“Don’t tell me what I like,” Hinata says, sticking out his tongue.

“You always complain when you get it that spicy!”

“Fine,” Hinata sighs. “Instead of a five spice make it… three.” He mutters the last part so quietly, Kageyama wonders if the person on the phone even heard him.

“I want–”

“Kageyama will have the same thing he’s ordered for the last billion Sundays,” Hinata says, rolling his eyes. His face goes blank as the person on the line says something. “Oh, you’re new? Sorry. He’ll have the pad thai with tofu and extra veggies. Three spice. And see if they can put in extra of the baby corn. He really likes those.”

Kageyama feels his face heat up a bit and he looks away. When did Hinata actually start paying attention to things?

“Oh, and some steamed dumplings,” Hinata adds. He then mouths, ‘I’ll pay for them,’ to Kageyama. He quickly thanks the person taking the order and hangs up. He reaches into his wallet and hands over a few bills to Kageyama.

Kageyama unknots his red uniform apron and throws it at Hinata’s face before grabbing the money. “Don’t mess up my section while I’m gone.” Unfortunately, someone has to watch his section while he’s gone, and the only one around is Hinata.

“Aye aye, sir,” Hinata says with a mock salute, and drapes the apron over himself sloppily.

2:26 PM

Kageyama comes back to find Hinata and one of the copiers covered in a thick black powder.

“I, uh…” Hinata stutters. “The light said it was out of toner, so…”

Kageyama sighs.

3:40 PM

It would figure that the only customer to come into the tech section all day would come in while Hinata is on his lunch. Just like Hinata had to cover Copy and Print while Kageyama was gone, Kageyama has to cover Tech while Hinata’s gone.

Kageyama leads the customer to the computers. He picks one of the info sheets in front of one of them and skims it before giving up entirely.

“Um, well,” he begins, gesturing vaguely at the computer. “This one is… fast.”

The customer skims the sheet as well, humming at a few of the different specs. “Right. So, what’s the serial bus speed on this one?” he asks.

Kageyama stares at him blankly. “... Five?”

The customer narrows his eyes. “Five?”

“... and a half?”

Before the customer can respond to this, Kageyama feels someone push him out of the way. He nearly yelps before he realizes it’s Hinata. “Looking at the X10, huh? It’s a pretty nice machine, but if you’re looking in that price range and you want something optimized for speed, I’ve got something you’ll really enjoy right over here…”

Hinata winks at Kageyama before leading the customer away. Kageyama feels a conflicting urge to punch him and hug him simultaneously before he splits the difference by scurrying away back to his section.

4:28 PM

Thunder crashes outside as Kageyama checks out the only customer in the store.

“Oh, I hope I get home in time before it gets really bad,” the customer says.

“I wonder if the power will go out,” Hinata wonders.

“It won’t,” Kageyama says.

“I should look for the flashlights,” Hinata says, and wastes no time diving under the counters.

“I hope you boys will be okay if the power goes out,” the customer adds, concern seeming to tint her features.

“We’ll be fine,” Kageyama says. “The power won’t–”

With a crash of thunder, the power blinks out.

There’s a click behind Kageyama and a flash of light. “Found a flashlight!” Hinata says.

4:55 PM

There’s only a small sliver of light coming from the glass door of the store. The door is now locked, since they can’t take in any customers with the power out. Also, they didn’t manage to find any other flashlights, so the light from the door is the only light Kageyama has to work with currently.

Kageyama reaches out in front of him, feeling his way past the displays of merchandise. He sighs slightly before calling out, “Marco!”

“Polo!” Hinata’s voice comes echoing back. It bounces in such a way that it really does make it hard for Kageyama to figure out where he is.

“Marco!”

“Polo!”

“Mar–” CRASH

Hinata pops up a few displays over from where Kageyama has tripped and knocked something over. He turns on his flashlight to reveal that Kageyama knocked over the printer ink display, and now the boxes are everywhere.

“That’s a lot of ink,” Hinata says.

5:40 PM

“Look, I’m sorry,” Hinata says, shouting slightly so the person on the other side of the glass door can hear him. “But we can’t let people in while the power is out. We’re closed.”

The man on the other side makes several irritated gestures.

“We just can’t,” Hinata says. “There’s no lights! It’s a safety thing! You could trip over stuff.”

Kageyama huffs at that.

The man on the other side doesn’t seem convinced by that.

“I just can’t let you in until the power–” Hinata is interrupted by the sudden hum of electricity as every light in the store comes to life. “–comes back on…”

Kageyama tries to cover his laughter with a series of coughs.

6:39 PM

“Admit it!”

“No.”

“Come on,” Hinata whines. “It was a pretty fun day, right?”

“I barely got anything done,” Kageyama sighs.

“Exactly,” Hinata says. “That is the definition of a fun day at work.” He’s leaning too heavily on one of the copiers, and Kageyama wants to tell him to stop.

“I had to try to sell that guy a computer,” Kageyama mutters with disdain as he starts putting away supplies.

“And you did a really awful job,” Hinata says, standing to follow Kageyama. “But that fine, because you’ve got m–” CRASH

Kageyama turns to see what happened. After Hinata’s toner incident earlier, Kageyama had put the near-empty toner drum to the side. He meant to box it up properly, but after the blackout, he’d forgotten.

Hinata has tripped over it and is now once again covered in the black powdery soot.

Kageyama laughs.

“Hey!” Hinata shouts.

“You look ridiculous,” Kageyama laughs.

Hinata gathers a pile of the soot and throws it at Kageyama’s face. It covers him in a fine mist.

Kageyama glares.

Hinata freezes. “Uhh… Wait, I…”

Kageyama reaches wordlessly over to the hole puncher. With practised ease, he pulls out the slide that collects the paper scraps, and throws a handful at Hinata. It covers him like snow standing out against the black toner.

They both smile.

In an instant they’re throwing handfuls at each other, covering themselves and everything caught in the crossfire in a fine salt-and-pepper coating. They fall to the floor in a mess. Hinata spits, trying to dislodge some of the small paper circles that have stuck to his lips. His hands are covered in toner, so he can’t just wipe them away without making his face a bigger mess.

Kageyama has already pulled off his apron and started scrubbing it over his own face to clear away the toner Hinata threw at him. When he looks up to see the difficulty Hinata is having, he reaches out and swipes a now-clean finger across Hinata’s lips without thinking.

They both freeze for a minute at the contact. Kageyama blushes brightly, and it’s Hinata who recovers first.

“I knew it, Kageyama. You like m–”

Kageyama leans forward and shuts his up by kissing him. Hinata is shocked for a moment before he laughs into the kiss and returns it.

They only stop when they hear a heavy door open and close.

The manager’s door.

Kageyama yanks away and throws his apron at Hinata and shoves him under the counter. Of the two of them, Hinata is still the one quite clearly covered in paper and toner. Kageyama bolts up and stands at the counter, trying to pretend as if nothing happened.

The old manager walks up to him, blinking slightly. He’s half-blind, and he doesn’t have his glasses on currently. “Ah, Kageyama. Can you lock up tonight? I need to leave a little early.”

“Yes, sir,” Kageyama says tightly.

The manager hums at this. “Also, dust this place before you leave. It’s getting a little dusty, I think.”

“Of course, sir.”

He seems satisfied at this and smiles at Kageyama before turning around and walking out the door.

Hinata pops up, staring over at the door in shock. “He was here the whole time? What about when the power went out?”

Kageyama shrugs, still shocked.

There’s a beat, and Kageyama could swear he hears the exact second Hinata starts grinning. “I knew you were scared of the manager.”

Kageyama wastes no time throwing more paper at him.
