The Sports Anime Shipping Olympics (SASO) is a summer prompt-based shipping challenge for all sports anime and manga fandoms! (What counts as a sports anime/manga?)
Fans form teams around their favorite ships and canons, and then compete in prompt-based challenges to show off how awesome their ship/fandom is. Everything from fanfiction & fanart to games, recipes, graphic design, cosplay, videos, animation, knitting, coding/programming, and voice acting (and more) are welcome! If you have any creative skill, then come join us!
The event begins on May 20, 2017, and ends on August 31, 2017, though team formation and fandom nominations begin earlier. For more information, check our Schedule.
The Sports Anime Shipping Olympics is hosted on Dreamwidth and you must have a DW account to play. (They're free!) To create one, click here. Please verify it and set DW private messages to "Registered Users", too.
You can use our RSS feeds (Dreamwidth) (Tumblr) to track the event. Additionally, you can use feedmyinbox to send RSS feed updates to your e-mail inbox.
To participate, you have to be a member of a team. There are three options:
Each team needs a minimum of four (4) people to qualify to compete in the SASO and has a member cap of eight (8), though these numbers may change depending on the expected SASO turnout. (Team Grandstand is an exception; it has no minimum or maximum.) Teams are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
To create a team, just sign up (closed for 2017) for it. If the team already exists, you'll be placed on it; if it doesn't, you'll create it!
Anyone age 13 or older can participate in SASO. However, we do identify under-18 participants on the team roster for the sake of transparency, and minor participants will not be asked to read and vote on high-rated entries.
Each team is led by a Captain.
Ship Teams
These represent a single ship from any sports animanga title. Each ship team encompasses all types of relationships between the characters involved: friendship, romantic, sexual, etc. They can represent cross-canon ships (e.g., Team Kagami Taiga/Kageyama Tobio) and selfcest (a character with themselves). A team's ship can include up to four characters.
All ships are written last name first name in alphabetical order by last name, and separated by a slash ( / ).
Sports Teams
Each Sports Team represents a single animanga fandom (e.g., "Team Prince of Tennis"). Their main round entries can be about any ship that is not already represented by a Ship Team.
For example, if there's a Team Nanase Haruka/Tachibana Makoto, Team Free! would not be able to make Haruka/Makoto fanwork for the main rounds. However, it could make fanwork for any unrepresented Free! ship.
If there is enough interest, there can be more than one Sports Team per fandom. For example, if 16 people are interested in joining Team Cross Game, they would be split into two 8-person teams.
If you want to represent a rare fandom and you're not sure a Ship Team will drum up enough interest, a Sports Team is the way to go.
Team Grandstand
This is the SASO's cheerleading block. They do not produce main round works, but are welcome to participate in the bonus rounds. As they are not a competing team, their fills and prompts do not receive points.

Teams can collaborate on their main round creations, or teammates can work independently as per individual/team preference. However, each team may only submit one representative work to the round, so you'll have to pick one if multiple works are created. Click here for more information.
All submissions must be created new for each challenge. More Information.
All work for the SASO must be made by that team. You cannot ask people outside of your team for help (with the exception of cosplay, which may use an outside photographer; more info).
All teams must maintain Main Round anonymity or you may be penalized. (Why is MR anonymity important?)
Team Grandstand does not participate in Main Rounds.
During bonus rounds (br), teams can earn extra points by creating neat stuff for other teams/participants! Everyone can take part, including Team Grandstand.
A new bonus round is posted every 2 weeks, and is basically a themed kinkmeme. For an example of what a bonus round is, visit this br from an earlier SASO.
Once every team has submitted their entry to the Main Round, teams will have ~48 hours to proofread their entries and make sure they're correctly formatted. This is marked as the "editing period" on the Schedule.
After that, the mod referees will check the entries. During this time we'll be contacting captains to let them know if we find anything wrong. Please be ready to respond, as once the mod check period is over, your team's entry may be disqualified!
Once the round looks ready to go, everyone can enjoy the entries and pick their favorites to vote for. (Please don't discuss your voting choices publicly. Private discussion, of course, is your own business.) Any registered member of any team, including Team Grandstand, is allowed to vote.
We'll post a link on our DW comm to a webform. Each person may cast one (1) preliminary Vote for three (3) teams using the form.
Depending on the number of competing teams, we might break entries up to ease the reading load. In that case, going to the voting webform will give you a list of ~10-20 randomized entries to read. From this smaller group, you can pick three favorites. (Our voting system actually has quite a bit of math and thought put into it! You can learn more about it at this post.)
Preliminary voting lasts about a week.
Final Vote
After the preliminary round of voting is completed, the top 15 highest-scoring entries will advance to a Final Vote round. Participants can look at these entries and use our webform to cast a vote for their top three favorites. At the end of the Final Vote period, all votes will be tabulated, and the top ten teams will receive additional points!
Main Rounds
All teams that submit a main round entry will receive 250 points.
The fifteen teams to advance to Final Vote receive an additional 250 points.
After that, the top ten teams in each round receive additional points as follows:
10th: +50 (550 points total for the round)
9th: +100 (600 points total)
8th: +150 (650 points total)
7th: +200 (700 points total)
6th: +250 (750 points total)
5th: +300 (800 points total)
4th: +350 (850 points total)
3rd: +400 (900 points total)
2nd: +450 (950 points total)
1st: +500 (1,000 points total for the round)
Bonus Rounds
For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

Main Round Limitations
If your entry text is in any way difficult to read, embedded in an image/program/game, spread across multiple pages, not screen-reader accessible, etc., you must include a link to a script with your entry.

Writing: 1,000 (min) to 4,000 (max) words.
Art (without words): 1 (min) to 20 (max) images.
Combination Art/Writing Entries:There are four tiers of limits.
Gifs/Animations included in a larger work (such as a fic or comic): 20 seconds in total.
Video/Audio: 4 minutes max runtime (this applies for both animated and live-action video, as well as music and voice acting).
Cosplay: Costumes should be made/assembled at least 50% new for the SASO. You can reuse any SASO-made costumes from round to round. Each round's cosplay photos must have evidence of a unique photoshoot. Click here to learn more about cosplay limitations.
You can combine media types. For example, an entry of 4,000 words and 5 images could have two cosplay photos, one photo of a sculpture, one static illustration, and one gif. However, each individual piece of media must conform to its specific limitations.
If a main round entry exceeds any limitation in any medium by less than or equal to 5%, it will be penalized 50 points. If it exceeds the limitation by more than 5%, the entry will also be disqualified from final vote. Click here for more information.

- You found out about the Sports Anime Shipping Olympics after signups had closed.
Captains
Team Captains are responsible for:
- Creating/maintaining the team DW community.
- Organizing and submitting the entry for each main round.
- Maintaining order and peace within the team (to a reasonable extent).
- Checking in with the mods when asked.
- Contacting the mods if the team or your teammates have any questions or issues.
Main Rounds
There are two main rounds (MR). Here's how they work:
- Mods post a prompt.
- Teams have 30 days to create super cool fanwork inspired by the prompt.
- Teams choose a work as their entry to represent them.
- Captains submit their team's entry to the round community.
- Everyone admires each other's works and votes on their favorites.
- Vote results are posted and points are awarded!

- Both high-resolution and NSFW art fills may include a small safe-for-work image thumbnail if you would like to give a preview.
