Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

    SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

    For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
    Fills 4-10: 10 points each
    Fills 11-20: 5 points each
    Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

    Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

It was cold—the wind that blew through their hairs and the snow that fell softly on their flushed cheeks.

Mihashi stared at the snow beneath his feet and wrung his gloved fingers, waiting for Kanou to speak. He was in town visiting his relatives and they had met coincidentally while he was heading towards the convenience store. He was nervous and excited at the same time. He wanted to tell Kanou everything about his team. How he’s working on becoming a better pitcher, learning new pitches, and realizing what a battery really meant.

“Ren…” Kanou finally spoke. Mihashi looked up and he could see the warmness in the other’s cheeks. “Are you happy…? With your team I mean.”

Mihashi’s heart beat fast and his eyes shined enough for Kanou to know the answer, but the former did anyways, nodding and giving an excited, “Mm!”

Kanou slipped into his own smile and chuckled. It had been a while since he’d seen Mihashi happy. Not even during their time in Mihoshi did he get to see Mihashi smile often, if ever. His smile faltered and he looked away before Mihashi could notice the sadness in his eyes. He was genuinely glad that Mihashi finally got a team that recognized his hard work; he really was, but nonetheless, he felt lonely. Not only had Kanou admired Mihashi’s pitching control, he admired him as a person. Mihashi was kind ever since he’d known him as a child. Always timid, but also very easily happy just by playing a few rounds of catch. He missed those days.

“Do you…Do you ever think about what if?” Kanou whispered his thoughts aloud, half-hoping Mihashi hadn’t heard because it wasn’t as if Kanou didn’t like his own team. He enjoyed practicing and playing with them and forming his own real team. But, he can’t help but wonder if it would have been better if Mihashi was there also.

Mihashi tilted his head slightly, hearing the question but not really understanding what he meant by it.

“If you had gone to Mihoshi with me…” he clarified, suddenly feeling like he needed to hear an answer.

Mihashi jumped at the mention of his old school. Even though he had made up with his former team, it still made him anxious. He still held onto the guilt of ruining everyone’s junior high years, so he didn’t really want to think about if he had gone Mihoshi. Reluctantly, he met his eyes with Kanou’s to find the other staring expectantly at him. Mihashi quickly looked away, feeling that if he were to tell what he really felt, it might somehow feel disrespectful to the his old team and his current team.

Kanou gave in and let out something mixed between a sigh and disheartening laugh. “I guess you wouldn’t.
Your team must be that great, huh?” He gave Mihashi a big smile, trying to ease the atmosphere again. But the false happiness could be seen through his sad eyes and it didn’t go without notice.

“Shuu-chan…” Mihashi contemplated how he should explain his feelings before continuing, “I-I think about the past…a lot…I have thought about what if I had gone to Mihoshi.” He curled his hands close to him, remembering when he had dreams where he was accepted by his old teammates. “B-But I am okay now. I…I don’t think about what if anymore…”

Kanou frowned, feeling the loneliness run deeper into his heart. He didn’t know what he was hoping for Mihashi to say. After all, he knew Mihashi was happy with his team so of course the latter wouldn’t miss being at Mihoshi. But he wanted Mihashi to say something different, something more.

“I-I don’t think about Mihoshi much anymore, but…when we were kids…I think about it whenever I’m sad and a-also sometimes when I’m happy. I-I miss playing catch with you, Shuu-chan.”
It took a moment for Kanou to take in what he had heard. The pink of his cheeks turned into a deep red. He lifted his hand to his mouth and coughed, trying to hide his own happiness. His lips stretched into an honest smile. “Me too.”

Mihashi gave one of his rare big smiles in return and Kanou could feel his heart fill with warmth enough to melt all the cold and shivers of his body. He leaned closer to Mihashi and without thinking embraced him, letting his head fall onto the other’s tensed shoulder.

Not knowing what to do, Mihashi put his arms around him, blushing as much as his body could handle. He clenched his hands to the back of Kanou’s clothes. His heart was beating fast and his nerves felt so tingly. He didn’t understand. But he knew he had really missed Kanou and now he’s thinking what if. What if Mihashi told Kanou how he really felt? How Kanou’s texts always made his day. How Kanou was his special rival. How Kanou was the person he admired most. How much Kanou meant to him, not just as a role model, but as person he would always cherish. How just being with Kanou made him happy.

“Ren...” Kanou mumbled onto the now relaxed shoulder and held him just a bit tighter. Mihashi glanced at him from the corner of his eyes, waiting for him to say something, but nothing more was said. Kanou could feel his own pulse thrumming against the skin of his neck. It was loud in his ears and he thought maybe Mihashi could hear it. The root deep in his heart bloomed in his chest. This was what Kanou wanted—to mean something to Mihashi. He didn’t want to just be a memory. Mihashi said he’d miss him and that was enough; it should have been enough. Kanou could feel the thorns in his chest ache. This was what he hoped for, yet he couldn’t bring himself to say what he wanted the most—Mihashi.
