FILL: TEAM MIYUKI KAZUYA/MIYUKI KAZUYA, G
Word Count: 834
Plays fast and loose with canon, plays fast and loose with things likely to happen in high school baseball, I just wanted future fic rather than alt canon here you go.

"Do you think we ever looked that small?" Chris asks, nodding toward the players running laps around the field.
Tanba shrugs, his eyes following the feet of Seidou's newly-promoted first string. They're a lively enough bunch, lifting their heels and jogging at a good pace, and of his own choosing Tanba might not have described them as small. But they do look young, younger than Tanba can quite remember being.
Time passes, and players move on. Tanba's three years of high school baseball are far enough in the past that returning to Seidou's grounds feels like transporting himself back in time, to a period of his life Tanba hadn't realized he'd missed. He gave his all to those three years. He likes to think that he doesn't have any regrets.
"We must have looked smaller," Tanba says. "During our first year at Seidou."
Chris laughs at that, a low, warm chuckle like he isn't disagreeing. Chris had been good from the start, but even five years out from their final summer, Tanba knows he remembers the sorry state the rest of his teammates had been in. Though he's chosen to allude to it himself, Tanba's cheeks grow warm all the same when he thinks back on how they'd struggled.
"Do you think he's ready for us?" Tanba asks, changing the subject.
From where they're standing, just inside the fence, they can see the dugout waiting across the way. The figure posted outside of it is unerringly familiar, as much a fixture of Seidou as the dorms and the bullpen and the fields. They had all believed Kataoka was going to leave, when he had given his resignation and was known to be a man of his word. Hearing from the underclassmen that he had stayed on... Tanba remembers being at the end of his first year of university, his exams weighing heavily on his mind. He remembers being told, coach is staying.
He remembers feeling undeniably relieved. As Jun had said, back before the seniors game at the end of their last summer season, what was the point, if they couldn't see their coach when they came back to visit the school?
"Not quite yet," Chris says. "We'll walk over in another minute, when they've finished their run." Then he glances sideways at Tanba, his mouth only just turning up at the corners. "Are you ready?"
Tanba flushes, a flood of embarrassed heat up the back of his neck. Chris knows him too well to let him off the hook; as much as he's been fighting to maintain his calm, to keep down his nerves, there's a strange, fluttering excitement building in his gut. He'd played baseball in university, too, but this is a feeling he hasn't experienced since his high school career — since that practice game Chris had put on his gear for, if he dares to be specific.
"I'll be fine," Tanba says. He isn't certain whether that's a lie.
"Not too out of practice to throw to me?" Chris asks.
"Of course not," Tanba says, with more conviction than before. This time, he believes it when he says it.
"Then let's go," Chris says, beckoning over his shoulder with an inviting curl of his fingers even as he's walking onto the field. "We should warm up, before joining these kids in a game."
It's nothing official, nothing like koshien, or like playing in the pros. But Tanba hadn't had the fortitude for that, much as his desire to pitch to Chris never managed to abate. When their old coach asked whether they'd like to come to the school for an alumni game against the current players as part of their training camp, Tanba had been quick to make time in his schedule.
When they get into the bullpen, Chris with borrowed gear, Tanba with twitchy fingers twisting and twisting around a ball, it feels as if time has stopped. The voices of their teammates drift down to them, those who'd made it back for the alumni game, but Tanba puts their presence out of his mind. Everything narrows down to the feel of leather against his palm, the traction of his shoes against the dirt, the target that is Chris' mitt waiting before him.
This is what he'd wanted, all that time in high school training to become the ace. This moment of clarity between him and Chris, connected by the blur of the ball when he throws. The sound it makes hitting Chris' glove is a solid thud, echoed by the steady, speeding beating of Tanba's heart.
"I think that's good enough," Chris says, rising from his crouch after less than a dozen throws. "You don't seem so rusty after all. Let's save the rest for the game."
They're going to make Kataoka's latest bunch of hopefuls work for their victory, if they can take it. As long as Chris is catching for him, no matter the circumstance, Tanba will do all he can to throw his best pitch.
