Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

  • FORMAT
Bonus round shenanigans all happen in the comments below. Brand-new works only, please.

    • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to, including Grandstand or Sports Teams
    • Place the prompt's relationship in the first bolded line of the comment. Including the canon isn't required, but it's nice.
    • Below that, place applicable major content tags (when applicable; otherwise write "no tags" or "none")
    • Visual example

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

    SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

    For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
    Fills 4-10: 10 points each
    Fills 11-20: 5 points each
    Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

    Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

(Humpty Dumpty

They say he started volleyball very early on as the elementary school team hero.

They say he’s good, he’s great, he’s practically even perfection consummate.

They say he’s a prodigy, with a future so bright and soon to revere of.

But all Tooru can think about are walls, and what sort of nightmares déjà vu seems to be made from.

(Kageyama Tobio is a little too much like Tooru, and yet, the drop off between being a genius and just a hard worker has never fell deeper.)

Tobio-chan isn’t a bad kid, really. Tooru knows, acknowledges it even, that the boy’s more dork than he is a menace: it’s hard not to notice when every so often he catches Tobio in a staring match with some drink vending machine. And unlike himself, Tobio’s social skills have so much more left to be desired (ha!) so Tooru shouldn’t have to feel so little when he’s basically two years older, far superior in both looks and public relations.

(He really shouldn’t.)

But it’s always this, it’s that, it’s always about who’s going to be on court and actually staying there.

It’s about who has more of a right to hold onto that ball just that little bit longer, to feel the caress of victory or sink of defeat, to be allowed to be in love with the game just that much madder.

Volleyball is the magnet, and unfortunately, Tooru and Tobio happen to be its polarity.

When they stick, sometimes things feelings between them do seem better.

And when they repel, it creates their very own Mariana Trench. Just, darker. Greater.

For all the times they seem to be at odds, they seem just as lost within each other as well.

(Humpty Dumpty

Tooru nearly punches Tobio one day.

He doesn’t really mean to, doesn’t actually want to harm him despite all the red clouding his thoughts then.

It’s one thing to hate, and another to act on it.

And Tooru honestly doesn’t hate Tobio.

He is afraid of him.

(All
the king’s horses
and all
the king’s men--)

The thing is Tobio wants to be just like Tooru better even and Tooru would rather cry trying than let someone, anyone be one step ahead of him where it hurts the most.

If the word ”genius” is going to become another damn ceiling, Tooru will grit out a so what? and kick it down at any rate.

If the distance between natural capability and someone as normal as him is still going to mock, then, the world can watch as he razes it.

Tooru will raise his chin and bare his teeth because he is who he is: he is not a genius, he is not someone’s magic golden boy, he is not talent’s darling.

He is Oikawa Tooru (scared, stubborn, but still good shit) and no one can be just like him anyway.

Not even Tobio.

(--couldn’t
put
Humpty
together again)

This is why is he says no when Tobio confesses to him after Tooru’s junior high graduation ceremony.

Neither Tobio nor Tooru are ready to truly face each other, and nothing pleasant comes from slinking wearily around something called the truth.

“I’ll go my way, and you’ll go yours.” Tooru’s words are met with the younger boy’s characteristic frown but he doesn’t argue.

Instead, he asks. “If I grow up a bit more, will you say yes when I ask you again?”

Tooru snorts and resists the urge to bury his face into his hands. “What are you trying to do, Tobio-chan? Become a kyojin? Or Godzilla?”

(He doesn’t need the boy to tower over him in more stuff anymore than he is now.)

But in lieu of Tobio’s determined face, Tooru gives in and decides to be honest. It’s the least he can do after all. “I think we both need to grow up…before we can try being anything more.”

He regrets this immediately because Tobio brightens up and the smile he’s trying to put on is the stuff of failure. “Oikawa-san, does that mean you’ll wait for me?”

“Haa?? Why would I?” Tooru grumbles as he shifts his eyes to the side, but adds in a smaller voice, “You’ll have to wait for me too. For a long, long time.”

Tobio’s face softens at that. “Okay.”

Tooru of course ruins the atmosphere because this is probably the longest they’ve gone without any snark and that's scary. “That doesn’t mean I won’t crush you if I see you on the court again, Tobio-chan! Please look forward to losing to Oikawa-san in the future too!”

That alone was worth watching Tobio’s face sour as if he’d drank expired milk.

“You’re awful, Oikawa-san.”

In his last year at Kitagawa Daiichi, Kageyama Tobio grew to hate the word "King."

It was a crown that rested too heavy on his head, his shoulders unable to bear the weight because he was just one boy. One boy without anyone to lean on.

And a king is nothing when he stands alone.

(Oikawa knows this. He knows that a king is nothing without advisors, without subjects, without the hearts and souls of those willing to put their trust and faith in him.)

They call him the Grand King. Kageyama looks at Oikawa Tooru and sees it, sees it as clear as if the crown were perched atop Oikawa's ruffled hair. During timeouts, Oikawa sits on the bench with eyes slid shut, and Kageyama cannot shake the image of a ruler, serene in sure in his place.

Kageyama Tobio hates to be called a king. It rubs against his skin wrong, reminds him of the ball hitting the ground, of turning around to find himself alone. He thought to be a king meant to be doomed to that fate, to be on a pedestal so high he could not be reached.

He looks at Aoba Johsai, Oikawa at the center, and he starts to realize he might have it all wrong.

Can you show me how to serve, Oikawa-san?

He'd looked up to Oikawa for his ability, for what he once thought to be talent but knows now is determination and work and, more than anything, an overwhelming desire to win.

Until now, he'd wondered just what Oikawa did differently, what set them apart when it came to that desire.

It's not until after their match with Aoba Johsai at the Interhigh that the pieces begin to click together. For years, he'd been chasing after Oikawa, trying to catch up in terms of sheer technical ability. The power of a serve, controlling his setting—the bits and pieces, the results instead of the cause. Techniques, strategies—all parts that, in the grand scheme of things, didn't matter as much.

(Oikawa knows this, knows that it's the team with the strongest six members that wins, that a team where all six members meet their full potential is the one that emerges victorious over the other.)

No, what mattered most was Oikawa's ability to listen, to watch, to observe in such a way that he was able to lead an entire team of different talents and abilities to become one cohesive unit. The ability to lead like a true king.

It dawns on Kageyama, then, that perhaps being a king isn't the worst fate he can bring upon himself.
