Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

    SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

    For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
    Fills 4-10: 10 points each
    Fills 11-20: 5 points each
    Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

    Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

677 words.

It starts like this:

“I don’t want to overstep boundaries, but if you go on as a professional, I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines.” Nekoma’s coach says, putting a hand on the ace’s shoulder. “Bokuto, you’re a good spiker.”

“I get called that a lot,” Bokuto says and there’s a hint of a smile there, like he’s proud of something but doesn’t want to admit it.

“What?” Kuroo leaps into the conversation, popping up from the coach with a devious grin. “A good spiker?”

“No,” Bokuto says, his grin mimicking Kuroo’s. “Bokuto.”

(They highfive and start hooting loudly. Akaashi looks despairingly at the ceiling of the gym. Kenma opens his phone to replenish his Frisky Bitz. Nekomata Yasufumi wipes his brow. Youngsters.)

**

Their joint practice happens for three days and four nights. After the hooting session of night one, this becomes three days too many.

If you asked Kenma, the worst part of it was the first day, because that’s when that was immediately after they established this… contest of sorts.

In the morning, before their warm up, Kuroo appeared with both of his shoelaces untied. Kenma arched an eyebrow but said nothing.

“Alright, ten laps around the court,” their coach shouted and they all got ready to run—except for Kuroo.

“Kuroo, you feeling alright?” Nekomata said, wrinkling his brow.

“Hm?” He looked up, as if startled out of a serious train of thought.

“Oh, yeah, I’m ready—” Kuroo stood up and promptly fell, landing on the ground with an “oof!” of exertion. “I’m ready—“ he repeated again, standing up, and then promptly fell with another “oof!”.

“I’m ready—oof!”

“Dang it,” Bokuto said and glumly stared at his own untied shoelaces. “He beat me to it.”

**

“Dumb people,” Bokuto yells right after a spike went past Kuroo’s block, “are always blissfully unaware of how dumb they really are.”

“Is that—” Akaashi narrows his eyes accusingly.

“Yup!” Bokuto cheers and slaps Kuroo a high five underneath the net.

**

A spike gets past his block and Yaku manages to recover it, sending it straight towards Kuroo. In a split decision, Kuroo lunges for and gets it, sending it flying back up high for Yamamoto to spike down.

This lunge causes him to roll forward, ending up flat on his stomach with his butt inches from Yaku’s face.

“Oh gross,” Yaku wrinkles his nose and clambers to his feet, body shifting back into position.

“Did you see my underwear?” Kuroo asks miserably, face pressed against the wooden floor of the gymnasium.

“What? No,” Yaku hisses, “get up, Kuroo.”

“Did you want to?”

Yaku simply lets the incoming spike hit Kuroo in the back of his head, ricocheting onto the other side of the net. Somehow, they mercifully get the point.

**

They’re eating watermelon, because it’s extremely hydrating and nutritious and tastes heavenly after a day of hardwork, when Bokuto slides a plate of an oddly cut out piece of watermelon.

“Hey, Kuroo,” he asks with a devious grin, “what am I?”

“Uh, stupid?” Kuroo replies without missing a beat and they dissolve into hoots of laughter.

Akaashi peers over to examine the piece. It’s shaped like Texas.

**

They’re heading back to the hotel where they’re staying at, a quick ten minute drive from the high school, and they’re all about to get onto the bus. The coaches have finished telling their respective teams what they need to improve on and watch out for, and have now merged the two groups to discuss schedules and other plans.

Bokuto leans in to Kuroo’s ear and, not quietly at all, says, “twenty-four.”

They dissolve into hushed hoots of laughter. It’s ridiculous, Akaashi thinks with a migrane coming on.

“Hey, Bokuto,” Kuroo says and Bokuto raises his eyebrows.

“What?”

“I thought of something funnier than twenty-four,” Kuroo says and elbows Bokuto in the side in a playful manner.

“Let me hear it,” Bokuto waggles his eyebrows. Akaashi briefly takes this time to wonder why this is his life, why, why, why—

“Twenty-five.”
