Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

  • FORMAT
Bonus round shenanigans all happen in the comments below. Brand-new works only, please.

    Required Work Minimums:
    • 400 words (prose)
    • 400px by 400px (art)
    • 14 lines (poetry)
There is no max work cap.

Format your comment in one of the following ways:

If PROMPTING:If FILLING:If FILLING as a TEAM GRANDSTAND participant:
    PROMPT: TEAM [YOUR SHIP]
    • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to, including Grandstand or Sports Teams
    • Place the prompt's relationship in the first bolded line of the comment. Including the canon isn't required, but it's nice.
    • Below that, place applicable major content tags (when applicable; otherwise write "no tags" or "none")
    • Visual example

    • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

    SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

    For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
    Fills 4-10: 10 points each
    Fills 11-20: 5 points each
    Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

    Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

----------
You vanish one day. You return on the same day.

But that’s not it, is it?

-
You’ve had these dreams for as long as you can remember. And in all their familiarity, you conclude that they feel too real to be just dreams. You can still feel the heat of the fire, the magic running in your veins as you forged your first soldier.

You remember /him/ with startling clarity, remember how he appeared before you, fresh from the fire and breaming as he took your hand and swore his loyalty.

-
And you would have been content if you hadn’t come across someone you hoped to forget.

-
He was your first forged, your strongest soldier. For all that it wasn’t easy to adjust to jumping back in time, you learned quickly. He learned quickly.

And before you knew it, your army stood strong, with him at the helm.

-
You can’t help but follow him, mesmerised. A name lodges in your throat, but you can’t call out. You know what his retreating figure looks like – you’ve bid him farewell more times than you can remember, wishing him luck on the battlefield and praying he returns unbroken.

-
You adjusted. You never quite gave up hope of going back home, to a time that was yours. But even as you missed that place, you still had this place. Your soldiers many, strong and willing to fight. You regretted bringing them to life for only that, so you tried to give them the best of what you had, even though their time was limited.

-
He disappears into a bakery, calling out to someone and his voice is so familiar, that you freeze. You remember being on the other end of those calls, rushing out of your room to your army, worn and battered, some broken, but still strong, still smiling.

You have to leave.

So you do.

-
You remember the first time they came back. He was injured, they all were, and you fret over them as they herd themselves into the forgery, as you try your best to use all the weird tokens you’ve saved up to heal them.

He waits until last, when your time is not so occupied with the others, and allows you to pat the whetstone powder to his scrapes as he laughs at your worry.

-
You write down everything you remember. You wonder if he remembers. If anyone else is here. If any of them remember.

-
You’re angry, of course you are. Because even if he wass an Oodachi, his heavy infantry were all but gone, and all he could do was chuckle as you fussed over him, whetstone powder and polishing cloth in your hands.

He says something, and you smile; and the smile he gives you in return is almost worth it.

-
You return to the Bakery the next day, and go inside for the sole purpose of seeing him.

And he’s exactly the same. You want to cry, and a grin spreads on your face as he turns to address you.

But there is no clarity in his eyes, no spark of recognition and none of the light you remember giving to him.

He doesn’t remember.

-
The first time a soldier breaks, you cry. As you do the second.

And even if it’s strange to be shedding tears over weapons, you can’t help but bury every single one; unable to bring yourself to break them down, to melt them down and forge new ones.

It wouldn’t be fair, you think.

You’ve always been sentimental.

-
Even if he doesn’t remember you, you certainly remember him. he still speaks the same, holds himself the same, andwhen you talk to him you are sure he is exactly who you assume him to be.

So it’s fine if he doesn’t remember because at least he is alive, right?
(But it still hurts.)

-
You remember the three of them. The Oodachi, the Naginata and, strangely enough, the Tantou. One cohesive unit, that despite the frailty of the Tantou, ran more successful missions than anyone else. (the Naginata and Tantou were close, and you remember how he took a shine to the two of them.)

You also remember the one and only time your troops ran into the Kebiishi.
And the near ruined troops, the broken Tantou the Naginata brought back.

The Naginata stopped sleeping after that.

-
Sometimes you see him talking to other people you know. You knew. And you wonder if any of them felt a connection to each other. If they were drawn together because of something they didn’t realise.

You’re glad they’re okay.

-
The war is getting worse and somehow, you are afraid. Not for yourself, but for the selfless being your’ve brought to life. They’ve sworn their loyalty, are willing to fight, but what sort of existence is that?

You want to take them away, you tell him late one night as you reforge him. Take them someplace safe.

He ruffles your hair and you want to cry.

-
They’re not the same. Of course they’re not. This person probably never had half the experiences he had, would probably never have to be faced with trails that difficult. And you know that. But it’s still hard not to think of him as him, even though it’s unfair.

You smile sadly at the boy behind the counter, handing over your money with a quiet "thank you."

-
You remember…

An attack. So very close to your home.

You remember the smell of burning in the air. He pushed you down to avoid the swing of a cursed weapon.

You remember blood on your face.

But you wake up in your bed, disorientated and back.

You black out. And as much as you try to, you can’t go back.

-
You can’t dismiss it, for all you try. Names in your history book still jump out at you with startling clarity.

You resolve to live this life to the fullest, to make up for your shortfalls in the last and it suits you fine. You almost forget, are almost able to brush away the feelings of melancholy and loneliness, to ignore the feeling of remembering what it felt like to bring soldiers to life.

You instead immerse yourself in a different type of magic, surrounded by those you call your friends, those who came to you mostly of their own violation. It’s equally satisfying, you find.

But your mind still wanders back to him.

So.

You resolve to make use of it. The least you can do is greet him. Make sure he’s alright. Because even after everything, you miss him.
But this is someone different, of course.

Still, you can’t help liking him all the same.

-
“Hi! I think I’ve filled all the stamps on this, so I get a custom bread right?”

“Huh? Your name is Tadokoro-san? I’m Kousaka Honoka! Nice to meet you!”

fun fact: i don't actually touran either, i just really love the idea of the plot. but i've yelled at you on twitter already, but i also wanted to say this again-- i love the way you intersperse flashbacks, they're timed super well, it gives me such a good glimpse into the world and of what honoka has been through. <3 the background t2 also gave me so much life.
