Bonus Round 6: Remixes

Bonus Round 6: Remixes

The event's almost over, and you've made it this far, congrats! This round encourages you to look back at everything the SASO has made and use it as inspiration.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on August 18 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Choose a fanwork created by other participants in a previous main or bonus round of SASO and create a new piece based on it. You could create a fanart of another work, an FST inspired by a piece’s style, retell another person’s fanfic from another point of view, create a new fanfic inspired by a great piece of art... go wild!
  • You cannot remix your teammates' works.
  • You must have permission from the original creator. There's a blanket permissions post here (feel free to add yourself to it!), or you can leave a comment on their original post asking for permission.
  • You must include the dreamwidth link to the original work in your post.
  • Since all fills are based on previous works, there will be no prompts for this round. Simply post your fill as a comment in response to this post.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many fills as you want!

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

Aoyagi Hajime/Teshima Junta; Yowamushi Pedal
blood, injury, hospitals
word count: 468

remix of [personal profile] yrindor's fill here

When it happens, Aoyagi feels as if he's watching it in slow motion.

He knows it's not the case, afterwards. He knows that they were both going much too fast for him to do anything to stop it, but it doesn't feel that way at the time. He sees the exact moment Teshima's fingers tighten on his brakes and knows that it's just a fraction of a second too soon. Aoyagi knows that he needs to move out of the way, or else they're going to collide, but he can't. Not in time, and he sees the way his pedal drags across Teshima's leg. He doesn't see the blood that pours from it immediately, but that's because he's already past, already clamping down on his own brakes as he tries to regain his balance to stop and get off his bike.

Teshima is lying on the ground, bleeding, and Aoyagi's hands tremble as he runs over. The gash down Teshima's leg looks bad, and Aoyagi's own leg throbs in sympathy. He squeezes Teshima's hand before letting go, running to get help.

When he gets back to Teshima's side, with the others following close behind, he takes Teshima's hand again and doesn't let go this time.

He lets the paramedics lift Teshima into a stretcher, and then doesn't let go of his hand the entire way to the hospital. He wants to hold Teshima's hand as they push him through the hospital corridors, but he knows that he'll only get in the way of the doctors and nurses running around. He follows close behind, taking the seat beside Teshima's bed and squeezing his hand again. It hurts to see Teshima in pain like this, knowing that it's the fault of his own bike. He wishes he could take it away, but it's all he can do to stay by Teshima's side and at least that provides some comfort.

He's already thinking of the ways this is going to affect their practice, and he knows Teshima well enough to know that he's thinking about it too. They're so close to their next race, and Aoyagi can't practice these sorts of things alone, while Teshima heals.

He knows that Teshima is likely to come up with a different strategy, something else that they can at least try, and he's already prepared for the possibility of it not working.

Aoyagi decides that he doesn't mind. If Teshima can't ride in the next race, Aoyagi isn't going to race either.

He's there as the doctor stitches up Teshima's leg, and they look at each other with tears in their eyes.

Teshima comes home with him that night, and once the lights are off, Aoyagi lies on the futon beside him. They take each other's hands again, and Aoyagi doesn't let go until morning.

remix of [personal profile] yrindor's fill here

Kuroo builds a home in him, brick by brick, and Kenma pretends not to notice. He doesn't make mention of it, when he doesn't really know if Kuroo is aware that he's doing it. He doesn't want to bring it up only for it to lead to an awkward conversation that he doesn't really know how to navigate.

It's a nice feeling, though. He thinks about it when he sees the way the tension leaves Kuroo's shoulders, the moment he steps over the threshold into Kenma's room. He feels it in the way Kuroo feels when he lies on Kenma's bed, pressed up against his side. They're both so comfortable with each other that they don't even need to speak when they're together and Kenma is grateful for it. As much as he doesn't particularly like to talk for the sake of talking, there are few people he feels comfortable enough with that he can sit in silence without feeling nervous about it. There are few people he would be able to maintain this amount of contact with. Kuroo's different like that, though. He always has been, and Kenma is certain of the fact that he always will be.

After all, if Kenma feels like home to Kuroo, he knows that the same is just as true.

Kuroo makes him feel safe. He makes Kenma feel comfortable and perhaps it's because they've spent a great deal of their lives together already, perhaps it's because they've grown together, and Kenma honestly doesn't really care about the reasoning behind it anyway. The only thing that matters is that he has Kuroo with him. It doesn't matter if they're in his bedroom in his family home, or the apartment they move into together after they both finish college. Kuroo is a constant in his life, and Kenma is glad to have him.

Actually building a home together is an interesting experience, when they're already so content with each other's presence. Kenma knows that it's nothing about the physical space that they live in that makes it home, but it's nice to have somewhere to come back to at the end of the day, knowing that Kuroo will be there too. It feels nice to fill their shared space with memories that they make together, with the life that they live together.

Whether it's the couch, or the kitchen, or their bed, Kenma knows that Kuroo is never too far out of reach, not even when they're both travelling for work.

It's a feeling that he'll never take for granted.

remix of [personal profile] yrindor's fill here

No one likes the runt of the litter.

They're the last words he hears before the witch sends a curse at him, and Kenma doesn't have the time to get out of its way, or to do anything, really, before he feels his small body growing smaller. He watches as his hands and fingers turn into paws and the cry of horror that bubbles up in his throat comes out as a soft mewl.

He scampers out of the witch's house and into the unfamiliar streets outside, knowing that as dangerous as they might be, he's still safer out there. He wanders around, trying to get used to the world around him, and he finds himself at a house, far enough away from the witch that he feels safe to take a break and catch his breath.

A man finds him, and Kenma immediately bolts into the safety of the bushes, hiding there despite the gentle voice urging him to come out, that he's not going to get hurt. He stays there, trembling, until the man gives up, going back inside. Kenma's just about to venture out of the bush when the man comes outside again, putting food out in a bowl for him.

Kenma waits until he's gone again before eating. With everything else going on, he hadn't realised just how hungry he was getting. He's grateful to the man, and the next day, he finds himself coming back, wondering if he'll meet the man again. He does, and he's given another bowl of food.

It quickly becomes a routine. Eventually, Kenma stops being scared of him. The man pets him as he eats, and sometimes talks to him, and it's soothing. His name, Kenma learns, is Kuroo. He's kind and gentle, and always looks for Kenma every night, no matter the weather.

A month passes, then another, and Kenma finds himself getting attached to Kuroo. He wonders if he would be welcome, if he wanted to stay with Kuroo, though he doesn't know how to ask, as a cat.

Before he can figure it out, of the witch's birds find him. They're magpies, flapping after him and chasing him through the streets until he realises that he has no idea where he is. They peck and scratch at him, and he doesn't realise that he's running off a ledge until it's too late. He yowls in pain as he lands wrong, and he hears the mocking calls of the magpies as they fly away and leave him to die.

It takes him days to find his way back to Kuroo's house, staying under the cover of the bushes in case the magpies come for him again. That's where Kuroo finally finds him, picking him up as gently as possible and taking him inside, and then to a vet.

Kenma hasn't eaten for days, and he's beginning to realise that the curse was something more than just turning him into a cat; it's slowly draining him of energy, and he doesn't know how much he has left.

Kuroo takes him home, and Kenma is too weak to even appreciate the fact that this is the first time he's properly been inside. He lets Kuroo feed him, he lets Kuroo pet him as much as he wants, because it's clearly comforting to them both. It does nothing to help him regain his energy though and on the third day, Kenma feels too weak to even open his eyes, or move his head.

He hears Kuroo speaking to him, though the words feel distant and far away. He thinks he feels Kuroo's tears against his fur. He feels weightless, like he's floating, and Kenma wonders if this is the end.

Instead, he feels himself growing. His limbs stretch out into arms and legs that he hasn't used for a long time, and even though he's still small against Kuroo, he feels big.

Kuroo is confused as he wakes, and Kenma sits there nervously, watching him, until the pieces finally fall into place.

"You saved me," he says, speaking for the first time in far too long, wearing a shy smile.

He doesn't tell Kuroo that he doesn't just mean the injury. The curse has been broken, and Kenma can feel his strength returning to him.

Love, he thinks to himself. Love always has a funny way of doing that.

Kuroo watches as Kenma pulls himself from the sky, detaching himself from the blanket of darkness one star at a time.

"I have to go," Kenma murmurs, his lips against Kuroo's, and it sounds like a gentle reminder and an apology, rolled into one. The warmth of his mouth lingers even as he pulls away, and Kuroo aches to pull him back in, to kiss him harder, to keep Kenma in his arms for just a little while longer.

He can't, though. Their place in the heavens has been hard earned, and they're here for a reason. Kenma disappears back down to the earth for a reason. They both have duties to uphold and lonely as Kuroo might be when Kenma is gone, he's comforted in the knowledge that he'll be back soon enough.

Besides, his view from up here is unrivalled by none. He might not be right by Kenma's side, but he can still see everything that happens. He can see the way Kenma saunters down to the surface of the earth, shifting forms with each step. He's no longer the giant cat that once hunted beside Kuroo. He's no longer the boy with feline traits that lives in the stars with Kuroo.

Down on earth, Kenma is nothing more than a cat. He's deceptively small, and he might look defenceless, but Kuroo knows better. Kuroo knows that as far as Kenma is concerned, appearances are deceiving. They always have been, and it's amusing to him, to watch the way his partner is constantly underestimated. He's clever, and he's powerful in his own right.

Kuroo's duty is to watch from the skies, but Kenma's is to guide people. If Kuroo is the beating heart, the distant echo of drums, the pounding of feet on the ground while hunting down prey, Kenma is the silent calculation that goes into all of it. He's the instinct, the careful consideration before every move. He's the brain, and he knows what he is doing.

In his cat form, he mewls to make his presence known, bathed in light as his chosen hero opens the door to him, unaware of the path that has been chosen for him.

Kuroo smiles to himself, and the sky beside him might feel empty, might leave astronomers scratching their heads for months, but he knows that it will all be worth the wait.

Kenma will be home soon, with a new hero, a new story, and he'll return to Kuroo's side once again. Where he always belongs.

remix of [personal profile] yrindor's fill here

The defeat and deposition of demon king, Kuroo Tetsurou, is turned into such a grand spectacle that it's visible even from the heavens.

The angels don't celebrate a defeat such as this; they don't take pleasure in suffering, no matter whose it may be. There are murmurs of Oikawa Tooru, the new king, potentially more dangerous than the last. They need to bolster their defences. The demon king is free to wreak havoc in his own kingdom, but the chaos he brings is unwelcome here.

Kenma watches and listens, his expression impassive as it always is.

They need something more than what they already have. Kuroo, in his reign as demon king, rarely turned his eyes to the heavens. Oikawa is more ambitious, a little more chaotic, and undeniably stronger.

Nobody questions Kenma when he takes flight. They leave him to make his way into the shattered remains of what was once the demon king's throne room. The demons stay out of his way as well; they must assume that he is here to finish what Oikawa started.

Kenma supposes that he'll see about that.

He doesn't announce his presence, but the heat of his righteous flames gives him away all the same. He lets Kuroo watch him, lets him make his own conclusions. It's clear that he expects to die. Kenma looks over his broken body, and wonders if death would be a punishment, or a relief.

The choice isn't his to make, though. Not right now.

There's only one choice to be made at the moment and it isn't his to make. Kuroo, though defeated, is still powerful enough. He would make a good addition to their ranks. He would have information that could be vital to their victory.

For them, forgiveness isn't a virtue as much as it is a necessary skill for survival.

Kuroo is too proud for that, though. Kenma is unsurprised, and is equally unsurprised when Kuroo seems to think that the only alternative is death.

For someone who fought so hard against Oikawa, he's surprisingly willing to die.

Kenma doesn't give him the satisfaction. That's not what justice is here for and so he waits, his sword still outstretched. His arm is getting tired from holding it up for so long, but he doesn't let it show. As always, he doesn't let anything show.

Kuroo's expression, as a contrast, reads like a book.

Kenma can see the surprise written clearly on his face. The fascination. He sees the pain as it lances through Kuroo's body, as he extends his wing.

The name of Kuroo's weapon is harsh against Kenma's ears, grating and full of power. Kenma feels it as their flaming swords touch, feels the determination at Kuroo's very core.

It's a stretch to call the demon an ally just yet, Kenma thinks, but he's glad that he's found someone he can understand.

Daichi remembers.

(Daichi doesn’t remember.)

(Daichi remembers a boy with a small smile that lights up his face like pale gold in the late afternoon light, the sweep of ashen hair that parts to show a beauty mark that sits high on his cheek. Which flower is supposed to say ‘If I had known what that meant at the time, I still would have pushed through’, Daichi thinks, but instead he pretends that he knows nothing about the way the light shines through Suga’s hair in the summer, at six, at sixteen, at the end of the world, at rest, or the way Suga grins cheekily with all of his teeth.)

“This one means ‘remember that day’,” Suga says, voice pleased as he gathers the white asters with hands that don’t tremble at all anymore, and Daichi pretends he doesn’t know about that, either.

Daichi almost asks if he can help him; but he doesn’t.

--

Fire is running up the walls, and Terushima has a knife at Suga’s throat, and then Terushima is gone and there are only the terrible screams that he leaves behind echoing against the walls of the yawning black pit that lies treacherous in the floor between them.

“It’s not your fault, Suga,” Daichi says, but his voice is rough, and he wishes he had something to occupy his hands so they would stop reaching for Suga, collapsed to his knees in horror. “He would have killed you, he would have killed all of us.” His words sound thin in the smoke that hangs heavy in the air; they need to leave, now.

“What have I done,” Suga whispers, and his hands tremble so much in this moment that the shivers run across his thin shoulders, too.

The flowering rubus crataegifolius is for ‘remorse’, Daichi thinks, but doesn’t say. Nemophila menziesii means ‘I forgive you’.

--

“Wait, how do you know my name,” Suga asks as he peers skeptically at the water below. There’s wind in his pale hair, lifting it off his forehead, and there’s nothing to hide his face from the bright light that floods through the windows and the door and the wide open sky that’s falling around them. They really need to get out of here faster.

“Uh, instinct,” Daichi replies, and he flushes even with the cold air biting into his skin.

“Yeah, right,” Suga says, hands shoving playfully at Daichi, but all Daichi can do is stare at where Suga’s sleeve cuff slides up to reveal the naked skin of his wrist. Daichi really wishes he had something to give back, and his fingers curl tight around the lighter that Suga had given him in thanks for saving their lives. The metal is warm, and Daichi knows that it will never cool to the touch; the fire burns in his hands, and in the back of his mind, and in the air of his lungs. “Who are you, Deja Vu-kun. I feel like I’ve met you before.”

Daichi remembers sunlight falling like gold around them as Suga smiles, and it might have been Suga’s smile was like gold too in that moment; but Daichi’s lungs are burning in his chest. He can't move, he can't breathe, he can't have this. So he pushes Suga out of the open door and into the open sky instead.

Daichi thinks he sees Suga flip him off as he falls to the safety of the water below.

--

“Someone once told me,” Daichi says as he watches Suga tie the stems carefully together, “that primroses are supposed to mean ‘hope’.”

It’s a beautiful day in Sumaru City, and the bakery ovens had been too stifling, too hot; Daichi had escaped from under his brother’s severe hand to wander down the street in search of a breath of fresh air. He’s been restless lately; there’s something about the city that hasn’t been sitting quite right with him.

“That someone would be right,” Suga smiles as he presses the bundled flowers into Daichi’s hands. Aster amellus; remembrance. Salvia splendens; I’m always thinking of you.

This time, Daichi accepts them.

Remix of [personal profile] starrwinter's kuramiyu fill

Baseball was a choice, always a choice, and Miyuki. Well, Miyuki was an accident, Youichi will always tell himself.

(At least at first.)

See, the thing is, Youichi doesn't really know how to do anything without pouring all of himself into it. He can't take just one tiny step in, he's gotta jump headfirst into things. And he doesn't quit. Not ever.

Baseball has always been that for him. The thing he doesn't ever want to quit. The thing he's dove headfirst into since he was a kid. The thing he thinks makes him matter--that gives him a chance to be part of something bigger than himself, part of something and valued for his skill, his ability.

Then, then there's Miyuki, who's also similar in the respect that he's stubborn, dives into things, gives all of himself to baseball. He's a little more analytical about it, a little more careful than Youichi is, but he's still got an inherently similar approach.

And Miyuki's not one to give up either. Youichi's learned that about him pretty quickly. Whether that revelation manifests itself in Miyuki's early morning teasing in their classroom as they wait for school to start. Whether it's at night, long after practice is over and Miyuki's still working with the pitchers. Whether it's concealing an injury, fighting through it to play in the game of their lives.

Baseball may be the thing that introduced Youichi to Miyuki, the thing that made them part of each other's lives, but there's more than that. Once Miyuki's latched onto him, become a familiar and welcome part of his every day life, well, Youichi doesn't want to let him go. Somewhere along the line, he's opened up this space that Miyuki's wormed his way into. Or maybe it's the other way around... maybe Miyuki wormed himself in and Youichi welcomed the contact, can't give it up.

But now, now he can't imagine wanting anything but this, can't imagine anything but them, together like this.

Youichi can feel himself falling. Slower than he's used to--still headfirst, still with all of himself, but a lot more careful, this time. He wants to make it count, wants it to be right. For him. For Miyuki.

Well, Youichi isn't anything, if not consistent.

So this time, this time when he feels comfortable enough, close enough, open enough, he lets himself fall fully. He lets himself pull Miyuki closer, lets himself enjoy the press of their lips and the feel of Miyuki's hair beneath his fingertips.

He can't imagine anything but this, now that it's tight within his grasp, and he's never going to let this go.

Remix of [personal profile] starrwinter's kuramiyu fill

Falling is terrifying. Letting himself go, letting himself have this is terrifying.

For Miyuki, it's easy, so much easier to put up a mask, put on a show rather than let anyone see anything but what he chooses to let them see. The mere idea of being so open with someone, so vulnerable and letting them see the real him? That scares him.

It's what often unintentionally drives him to continually push Kuramochi away. Every time they grow closer, every time they take one step, then another, and another, it's like inwardly, Miyuki's fear takes over, sees it as too much, and has to put up a defense.

It's caused a few fights and misunderstandings between them, but Kuramochi must be something of a masochist, Miyuki thinks one day--his thoughts tinged with bitter self-loathing at being like this, always being like this--because Kuramochi always comes back. They always find each other again, no matter what Miyuki does that would probably make anyone else run away and stay away.

Kuramochi, well, Kuramochi's always been different.

They fit together. They fit together well, oh so similar but levels of different; maybe opposites on the surface and to outsiders, but compliments to each other. And it's as if once they discovered this compatibility, this ability to slot together like puzzle pieces once they'd worn down these jagged edges and guards into something more smooth, more malleable, then the imprint of fitting together never quite disappears.

It's like they can never be pulled or pushed too far from each other, and will always end up back together in the end, stronger than before, closer than before.

And that doesn't always quell the worry Miyuki feels, the fear that eats away at him, taps at his heart in a constant reminder that things could change, things could get complicated, he could get hurt. It's difficult for him to ever fully let go of that feeling, to ignore it.

But Kuramochi's different, he reminds himself, not so much in words, but in actions.

See: Kuramochi nudging his shoulder on their walk back from practice, laughing brightly at something Miyuki said, a dumb joke, a stupid comment.

See: Kuramochi's careful eyes on Miyuki, concerned as he's always looking out for him, intervening when he needs to, keeping Miyuki steady when he needs that pull back to stability.

See: Kuramochi reaching for Miyuki's hand in an apology after they fight, squeezing it as an assurance that they're okay, they'll be okay.

It's things like these, small moments every day, that make Miyuki fall harder for Kuramochi, make him simultaneously more afraid of letting himself go, but also comfortable in knowing that it's Kuramochi he's doing this with, the one he's falling for.

And those moments allow Miyuki to push away the dark thoughts, the fears, and replace them with something better--light and happiness, Kuramochi at his side, here to stay.

Remix of [personal profile] starrwinter's tetsujun fill

with him, it's always been easy
to fall,
fall into this open-hearted familiarity,
touches and glances easily signifying it.

see, you've always felt this strong,
magnetic pull to him.
first as rivals, then as friends,
then as more than that.

you can't keep your eyes off him,
haven't been able to since the very beginning.
he draws you in.
always has, always will.

and it's easy,
better this way as you grow.
touches you wouldn't attempt with anyone else,
are welcome, soft and tender with him.

and when it becomes more than that,
when you can't keep this secret bottled up much longer,
it's quick and easy,
like falling into something you were always meant to.
like falling into step together,
constant circadian rhythm--natural and part of you both.

see, now that you have this,
you won't give it up.
now that you have more, have grown more,
you can take more, can give more.

and each other,
that's all you ever really need.

Remix of [personal profile] kiyala's "Iwaoi insomnia" fill here.

bleary, blurry

Bleary, blurry,
the edge of a curtain stained
in poor light: hues of midnight blues
and dull whites; they shift with every blink
of my eyes, so I reach out fingers
to make sure what I’m seeing
is real; is alright— but truth of the matter:
nothing is what it is
until I check the time.

Do you know?
It is as the clock strikes
three that I find myself
becoming a balloon; filled with hopes
and dreams— all especially for you,
and I tie myself up with ribbons
of reason, and troubles too; in the end,
I trickle a part of myself into a text, hint send,
breathe air and wait for you to reply
as you sometimes do.

(In the hours between
three and four, I close
my eyes, welcoming truths
like some fool, but maybe
that makes me happy too.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LETTING ME DO THIS

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ENTIRE SUMMER OF MEGATEN MESSES WE KEEP MAKING AT EACH OTHER

I'm so happy you like this.... I wanted so much to give them their most ideal normal, because I guess I can't fix Tatsuya and Jun's canon, but this is the least I can give Daichi and Suga?? I'm a sap. I can't believe I'm such a sap.

I like to think that one of Daichi's contacts is him talking about the meaning of being a captain ;w;
