One winter’s day Shinobu runs into the postman at the gate of the mansion. She’s about to step neatly to the side to let him pass when she catches sight of the distinctive Snowmaru postal mark on one of the parcels he’s carrying. Although she hasn’t been allowed to enter any prize draws lately, let alone order merchandise online, she stops him on instinct. ‘Excuse me, would you happen to be carrying any mail for Wakamiya Shinobu?’
Several minutes later she’s clutching the Snowmaru-adorned parcel to her chest whilst standing in the genkan, brushing snow from her hair and shaking out her coat before hanging it up. She toes out of her shoes, not wanting to let go of the parcel at all. Carefully, she shakes it – she thinks she can hear plastic crinkling as whatever’s inside moves from side to side. The parcel itself is small and light – perhaps it’s apparel of some sort?
She’s about to go straight to the study so she can open her package in peace, when she hears the phone.
Truly, Shinobu wants to ignore the call so she can be united with whatever’s in the package as quickly as possible, but the mansion’s phone is an old model; its sound more closely resembling screeching than the polite, contained ringing of newer handsets. Ignoring the call also doesn’t guarantee that the phone won’t ring again – especially not if the caller is Suou. Sighing, she moves quickly through the hallways to the source. ‘Wakamiya residence.’
It’s mostly silent on the other end, though it sounds like someone’s trying to catch their breath in the background. Rolling her eyes, Shinobu presses the receiver to her ear with her shoulder so she can stabilise the parcel with one hand whilst working it open with the other. ‘I know you’ve had a lot of time since graduating, but surely you have better things to do now than bother me? Especially since you’ve qu-‘
‘Shinobu-chan!’ An unexpected voice soars through the receiver, its tone warm like sweet birdsong, and suddenly Shinobu is trying not to drop the phone. She catches it deftly before it can smack against the floor.
‘Chihaya?’
‘Shinobu-chan, did you receive the parcel?’
Shinobu eyes the unopened parcel; she’s barely managed to worm her right hand under a bit of tape. ‘Yes…’
‘Oh, I’m so glad! The text message updates worked! Well? What do you think?’
When Shinobu doesn’t immediately reply, Chihaya continues, ‘Oh! Have you not opened it yet? Go on, go on!’
There are no scissors nearby, so Shinobu rummages through her Snowmaru purse for something else to help. She finds her keys and starts sawing through the tape. She doesn’t say anything to Chihaya the whole time; she knows Chihaya can hear everything, and besides, her heart feels like it’s jumping in her throat. She’s never been good at small talk, and at present she doesn’t trust herself to try.
She gasps when she finally gets the parcel open and comes face to face with a limited edition Snowhime scarf and mittens set. Rare! And so adorable! ‘Try them on, try them on!’ Chihaya urges. Shinobu carefully wipes her hands before removing the scarf and mittens from their packaging. Whilst she’s unfurling the scarf tenderly to appreciate the full pattern printed on it, an envelope slips out and falls into the open parcel.
Shinobu carefully places the scarf down before picking the envelope up. It’s gone very silent on Chihaya’s end – is she holding her breath? Shinobu hastens to open the envelope. When she sees what’s inside, she thinks that her breathing also stops for a moment.
‘How did you… Snowmaruland… Pre-opening… These tickets… How?’
‘My sister! She won them in a prize draw, but since she doesn’t like Snowmaru, she gave them to me.’
‘There are two tickets here.’
‘No one loves Snowmaru as much as you do, so it was an easy choice!’
‘The pre-opening is one day, and there’s only one of me.’
‘Ah, Shinobu-chan, I can’t afford to stay in a hostel or hotel in Kyoto or Osaka, even for one night! My parents would be worried… Have double the fun in my place! Get your friend to take photos of you, and send them to me!’
Whilst Chihaya speaks, Shinobu strokes the material of the scarf and mittens, appreciating their quality. Tracing a finger along the pattern of Snowmaru and Snowhime holding hands around a giant heart, she thinks about her options. It’s the middle of January, and the Queen matches are recently over. Shinobu’s started playing in more tournaments for the varied experience, and Chihaya herself goes to plenty. But they still live in different regions, so when will Shinobu see Chihaya next?
Maybe she doesn’t want to only see Chihaya again at the Queen matches. Maybe she doesn’t want to see Chihaya only at karuta matches. Maybe.
So when Chihaya falls silent, Shinobu responds. ‘What if you stayed with me?’
Shinobu thinks she hears sputtering, and she winces when she hears the sound of plastic falling hard against wood. ‘I couldn’t – I shouldn’t – I wouldn’t want to impose…’
‘You wouldn’t be. Besides, you’ve let me go over to your house before, haven’t you?’ Shinobu often thought fondly of Chihaya’s airy, bright, cozy house, with its warm people and atmosphere, and the impressive Daddy Bear collection in her room.
‘Yes, but only for a day trip! Not a sleepover!’
‘It’ll be fine. I’ll speak to my grandmother about it. You should speak to your parents. Would you call me back?’
Chihaya sputters more, and Shinobu feels a smile tugging at her lips. Finally, Chihaya collects herself enough to say thank you, I’ll ask my parents and call you back, and hangs up.
Instead of going to the study, Shinobu takes the parcel to the room she shares with her mother, where there’s a mirror. She lifts the scarf and mittens out once again, and puts them on.
It’s the middle of winter, but as Shinobu examines herself in the mirror, she feels warmth radiating from her chest, reaching the tips of her ears and tingling on her cheeks. The scarf and mittens look adorable, and she can’t wait to wear them everywhere, but especially to the Snowmaruland pre-opening.
When the phone rings again, she smiles and quickly makes her way to answer it.
--
‘That was so fun! Waaah, it’s too bad it was only a one day thing!’
They’d had a great time at Snowmaruland – they’d gone multiple times on each of the rides, played at several game booths, taken several pictures with all the character mascots from the Snowmaru franchise, and probably eaten their weight in Snowmaru food samples and snacks. They’d even stayed for the special Snowmaruland parade and fireworks, even though the loud sounds were overwhelming to both of them.
Now they’re trudging through the snow back to the Wakamiya estate. Chihaya is chattering animatedly, recounting everything they saw and did to Shinobu. Wasn’t this great… wasn’t it so exciting when… I loved it when… What did you think… How did they manage to…
Shinobu steals a glance at Chihaya. She’s gesturing energetically, and though the roads are dark save for the faint glow of streetlamps, Shinobu feels like everything around her and Chihaya is illuminated.
Chihaya stops talking and turns to Shinobu, catching her eye. It feels like everything is suddenly suspended in the air, like the silence before the reading begins for a match.
They hold one another’s gazes for several moments. Finally, Chihaya grins and jumps towards Shinobu, wrapping her arms around her.
‘Shinobu-chan, I had so much fun today. Thank you for letting me stay with you and accompany you.’
‘…Likewise. Thank you for sending me the tickets. And the scarf and mittens.’
Chihaya unwraps herself from Shinobu to place her hands on her shoulders, peering at her scarf. Then, she reaches out to rearrange Shinobu’s scarf, pulling the material into a secure knot that rests comfortably against Shinobu’s neck.
‘They really suit you! I’m so glad!’
It occurs to Shinobu that she hasn’t gotten Chihaya a return gift yet. ‘Next time…
‘Next time, I’ll win the tickets. Will you come with me again?’
Chihaya beams and jumps to hug Shinobu again.
‘It’s a promise!’
