  5. Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?

What should we call you?

Yo yo yo, I'm Dokuhan, but you can call me Doku if that's to long.

What got you into sports anime?

I saw Free! because I was super curious about what everyone thought was so great and really enjoyed myself. Then I saw Haikyuu!! and completely fell into this hell. Now I do panels about sports anime at conventions and I wrote my grad admission essay about one.

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?

Ahhh, it's hard to say because I like different ones for different reasons. A lot of it relates to the characters. I just love character driven stories and sports anime are great for that.

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?

Okay, so like...90% of Touch. Especially the moment in the second season that takes place a year after Kazuya dies in the accident and Minami says "We'll do our best to live. We're proof that Kacchan used to live in this world." Like, ugh. Slay me. Goddammit Touch.

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?

So I recently found myself identifying a lot with both Yuuri and Yurio from YOI. Yuuri especially. I also see a lot of myself in Miyuki (especially if we go the "he's an asshole to hide his hurt" route) and Daichi (in that I'm constantly low key dadding).

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?

I like to think I'm really good at writing content for Haikyuu!! since I can really slip into those characters. I think I do a pretty decent job with Daiya too. I have a really, really hard time starting up stuff with Free! though and I can never seen to get a handle on Oofuri, but I wanna try this year. I can't do Yowapeda at all despite binging the show because no one sticks out for me enough.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?

Give me everything.

Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!

Literally just Google "Dokuhan" and you'll find EVERYTHING.

I think you may be the reason I've read/watched so many classics, at least in part. Thank you.

Ayyy, you're probably farther along in most of them than I am, that's for sure. I still nominated a bunch though.

Which ones have you seen? I've only finished Touch, but I've watched good chunks of Attacker You!, Aim for the Ace!, and Hikari no Densetsu.

Oh gosh! I haven't been able to get my hands on Attacker You! or Hikaru no Densetsu, but I've read the beginning of Cross Game, Touch, and H2, and I watched all of Taisho Baseball Girls (LOVED IT)... I'm pretty sure I have your old school repping to thank for finding them!

I could hook you up with Hikari. Not so much Attacker You! anymore (RIP Nyaa), but maybe if I manage to get the Megas.

Taisho is my shiiiit though. It's amazing.

Oh, Nyaa. We had some times. I think Mega might be one of the services I was kicked off of, though?

I was kicked off of a lot of services back when I did fansubs. It's... a big part of why I stopped.

It all just happened so fast, what the fuck. I lost a bunch of my things because my HDD died and now I guess I'm not getting anything back. ):

I actually really, really wanna do a paper (or book) about fansubbing and why it was super important to building the industry in the states. Like I feel like there's no respect and a lot of people don't want to acknowledge the fact that you guys basically created and kept the industry alive in the pre-streaming days. Even Crunchy tries to downplay their past.

Fun fact: a *lot* of commercial subbers (not Funimation, for some reason) that are still around got their start as fansubbers and just managed to go legit. Even setting aside the role that fansubbers played in getting content to the states where people could demonstrate a market, the industry has DEEP fansub roots.

And I was never at home in the community, but if you need commentary on technical stuff, lmk!

Exactly. That doesn't even factor in things like Anime Sols (again, RIP), but that's a whole 'nother can of worms I could get into about marketing and how you really shouldn't base your startup purely around kickstarters and biting off more than you can chew.

Honestly, I just need to get off my ass and start the damn thing. A lot of the problem is I dunno how I would really find people from the early days (like tape sharing and all that). I don't want to save it for my dissertation, but if I did it would probably give me better resources.

You have a twitter, right? I need to throw you at my housemate. She was around for tape swapping.

And oh man, Anime Sols /wipes tear

I was supporting Black Jack until they stopped taking my money, and they got me my Dear Brother DVDs. I will miss them. RIP indeed.
