SASO 2017 Icebreaker: Voice/Text Meme

Interested in being a part of SASO, but don’t know anyone else who might be participating? Feel like making some new friends who love sports anime just as much as you do? If your answer to either of those questions was “yes,” then we’ve got a meme for you to play in!
To participate, answer any or all of the questions below, either by typing them out into a comment to this post, or by recording your answer and uploading it onto a website like Vocaroo or SoundCloud and then pasting it into a comment to this post. You’re free to answer questions in any way you like, however we ask that you keep your answers appropriate for all ages.
- What should we call you?
- What got you into sports anime?
- What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
- Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
- Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
- What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
- Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
- Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!
Once you’ve left a comment with your answers, go check out and reply to your fellow anime fans! Who knows, maybe you’ll find someone who gets just as emotional over that one episode of Haikyuu as you do? We sure hope you do, and we hope you’ll stay tuned throughout the next few weeks for more icebreaker games! (This round ends on May 5.)
*kicks in a window* GUESS WHO'S BACK, BACK AGAIN
Yo yo yo, I'm Dokuhan, but you can call me Doku if that's to long.
What got you into sports anime?
I saw Free! because I was super curious about what everyone thought was so great and really enjoyed myself. Then I saw Haikyuu!! and completely fell into this hell. Now I do panels about sports anime at conventions and I wrote my grad admission essay about one.
What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
Ahhh, it's hard to say because I like different ones for different reasons. A lot of it relates to the characters. I just love character driven stories and sports anime are great for that.
Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
Okay, so like...90% of Touch. Especially the moment in the second season that takes place a year after Kazuya dies in the accident and Minami says "We'll do our best to live. We're proof that Kacchan used to live in this world." Like, ugh. Slay me. Goddammit Touch.
Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
So I recently found myself identifying a lot with both Yuuri and Yurio from YOI. Yuuri especially. I also see a lot of myself in Miyuki (especially if we go the "he's an asshole to hide his hurt" route) and Daichi (in that I'm constantly low key dadding).
What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
I like to think I'm really good at writing content for Haikyuu!! since I can really slip into those characters. I think I do a pretty decent job with Daiya too. I have a really, really hard time starting up stuff with Free! though and I can never seen to get a handle on Oofuri, but I wanna try this year. I can't do Yowapeda at all despite binging the show because no one sticks out for me enough.
Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
Give me everything.
Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!
Literally just Google "Dokuhan" and you'll find EVERYTHING.

Which ones have you seen? I've only finished Touch, but I've watched good chunks of Attacker You!, Aim for the Ace!, and Hikari no Densetsu.

Taisho is my shiiiit though. It's amazing.
Re: *kicks in a window* GUESS WHO'S BACK, BACK AGAIN
I was kicked off of a lot of services back when I did fansubs. It's... a big part of why I stopped.
Re: *kicks in a window* GUESS WHO'S BACK, BACK AGAIN
I actually really, really wanna do a paper (or book) about fansubbing and why it was super important to building the industry in the states. Like I feel like there's no respect and a lot of people don't want to acknowledge the fact that you guys basically created and kept the industry alive in the pre-streaming days. Even Crunchy tries to downplay their past.
Re: *kicks in a window* GUESS WHO'S BACK, BACK AGAIN
And I was never at home in the community, but if you need commentary on technical stuff, lmk!
Re: *kicks in a window* GUESS WHO'S BACK, BACK AGAIN
Honestly, I just need to get off my ass and start the damn thing. A lot of the problem is I dunno how I would really find people from the early days (like tape sharing and all that). I don't want to save it for my dissertation, but if I did it would probably give me better resources.

I was supporting Black Jack until they stopped taking my money, and they got me my Dear Brother DVDs. I will miss them. RIP indeed.
