1. What should we call you?

everyone calls me Sarah! she/her. you might see me use "seren" sometimes too but that's mostly a pen name/what I name myself in videogames, for now.

2. What got you into sports anime?

Technically Angelic Layer and Free! are the first sports anime I'd seen but I REALLY fell down the hole when I first watched Yowamushi Pedal, some time in August 2014

3. What do you love about your favorite sports anime?

Hmm, gosh. Is it weird to say I'm grateful to YowaPeda because it was there for me when I was alone and then led me to a lot of my friends? I also like how the characters create distance between themselves and others.

4. Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?

oh boy I have a few to choose from but for this I'll pick the Kominato flashback/OVA because I was squirming like a stuck bug the whole time, emotionally.

5. Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?

if I had to pick one that's most like how I see myself and how others probably see me, Kominato Ryousuke? I even had a streak of pink hair for a while when I was in high school!

6. What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?

I can pick up Pedal, haikyuu, daiya, prince of tennis, chihayafuru, and love live prompts very easily (for characters that appear up to... the point i stopped watching, at any rate) just because I've drawn them enough and know them enough to think of funny situations to put them in. Your best chance of catching me is to prompt something I can fill with a single-panel comic with some snappy dialogue, or a costume swap, or elegant body horror.
Oofuri, tragically, is difficult for me to draw because their hair and faces really... look similar... at first... sorry

7. Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?

I swear I've watched more than ywpd, DnA, and PoT, but... if we're looking at volume... ;;;; I come across those the most.
But! I will also try to be here for the other fandoms I've mentioned in this post, and Ballroom E Youkoso, Gundam Build Fighters, Immortal Grand Prix, Princess Nine, Shokugeki, and Yuri on Ice.

8. Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!

[twitter.com profile] luckycricket33 is where I am most of the time. Right now I'm trying to dig myself in deep with Fire Emblem Heroes and Pokemon fandoms before I say goodbye to them for three months.

Hello Everyone!

1. What should we call you?
Real name is Lindsay, but fine with Linds, Starr, Lindsay... long as it's not a 'hey you' it's all good ;) she/her

2. What got you into sports anime?
Originally I was not into sport anime at all, but fell into a love with online comics first, discovered some of the animes different artists were into (SnK for one) before falling down the Free!, Yowa, then Haikyuu!! rabbitt hole. But the sport anime that REALLY hooked me (and stil, has me in its clutches) is Ace of Diamond with its cast of lovable characters.

3. What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
I love watching Daiya as it has everything you could want from close friendships, to all different kinds and personalities of characters, along with othercomung struggles to push yourself back up from defeat... and the damn RIVALRIES which I swear will be my early death (looking at YOU Sawamura and Furuya...) The series also started my own personal love for watching baseball as I used to HATE the sport. Not even just dislike but hate because I thought it was so boring and why would anyone waste time playing/going to watch a game. It turned it into an understanding of just how hard the sport of baseball is, and I pretty much watch a game a day now of MLB.

4. Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
Oh gosh... I don't like thinking about it again (in fact I haven't even been able to watch the arc a second time because of just how emotional it is) but Sawamura's yips, and then his corresponding recovery to be able to pitch inside again. Plus - third years... ;____;

5. Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
One look at my icon is only needed to figure this out,but Miyuki Kazuya all the way! Give me the slightly sarcastic, a little caustic, highly intelligent characters that I tend to love/ship (Arakita, Sugawara, Rin, Yurio)

6. What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
If I can understand the mind of/get into the head of a character those are the easiest series for me to write. Daiya, YOI, Haikyuu!!, and Free! are the easiest for me with characters, but also love Yowa, Shokugeki no Soma, Days, and All Out!

7. What series do you like to consume content from? Why?
If you put Daiya no Ace content out there (especially any brand of Miyuki ships) - I'm there! Haikyuu!!, Yuri on Ice, Yowa, and Free! I'm especially craving content from all of these fandoms.

8. Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!
Pretty easy to find with the same username on all platforms:

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why? Yowapeda is hard for me to write for various reasons, largely because I get hung up on characterization and worrying that I'm not doing it right

What should we call you?
I generally go by Coyote!

What got you into sports anime?
Free! was my first sports anime. You know when you see an anime's coming out and you're pretty sure it's gonna be so ridiculously bad it'll be funny (at least for an episode or two)? Well, I saw Free! and thought hah an anime about half naked boys splashing around in a pool *snort* thta'll probably just be ridiculously flat and fanservicey. Why not. And then I saw it and I was just so??? Wow. W O W After that, I was more open to checking out other sports anime (and ended finding I really liked them....
though not as much as Free! >u>

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
God I just?? Well in no particular other than what's the easiest to articulate, Free! is an amazingly beautiful anime. The scenery? Beautiful. The characters? Beautiful. That sparkle in Haru's eyes when he sees something he really likes? REALLY BEAUTIFUL. The next would be the relatability? Haruka's my age and so I could just kind of see my life in the show (though I'm not a swimmer. I don't do sports at all lol just more. The overall feeling??). In that way, seeing the characters face and tackle different challenges in their life sort of made me feel like I could do the same? Next on the list would be the character relationships and interactions. Character interaction is always my main interest in any media, and for me, Free! just hit all the right notes in what I wanna see. We got to see all different kinds of friendship and each character was important to the others in different ways that I feel was very realistic.

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
*describes the entirety of Free! season 1* jkjk haha Seriously though, mmm... I know Rin's "I'll never swim with you again" had my heart stop and left me speechless while Splash Free played joyfully in the background. Also in season 2 when Haru just stopped swimming during the race??? Or when he punched the locker?!?!?!?! But yeah no that s1 scene just. Wow. "This means I'll never swim with you again. Never."

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
Oh my god Haruka Nanase is like... me?? I love him like so much. A lot of things I've heard him criticized for as a character are things I just... really relate to. Like he's lazy? Kind of stubborn? Pretty socially awkward? He only ever really has the best intentions tho. He's kind of easily annoyed, and tends to find other people & relationships kind of troublesome, but he also cares for his friends. He's an artist? He's constantly told how talented he is and pushed towards going professional, but it's like the one thing he has. One thing that means the world to him and makes him happy, and he's terrified of losing everything it means for him if he's forced to do it. He also ends up doing said thing professionally because in the end he realizes that is who he is and it is his life, and he'd be far more miserable not doing it. He's also the swoopy haired anime boy I've always wanted to be, so there's that. But yeah, he just means... so much to me as a character. I just kind of wish some people didn't treat him like he's some boring character w/ no personality just because he's more reserved. His feelings and motivations are just as strong and important as any other character's.

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
W O W I WONDER??? Haha it's Free! obviously. I make it sound like I've never seen another sports anime in my entire life, but I'm just that into Free!. I spent a good few months where I'd draw absolutely nothing but Haru. I'd play drawing games on iscribble (where the challenge is to draw based on a topic within a time limit), and I'd just be like "How do I make this about Haru???" I also specialize in swoopy haired anime boys, so art-wise that's right up my alley.

Oh heck wait I didn't read the whole question. What do I find it hard to make content for? Mmm I don't really draw buff guys or spiky hair much, so any characters with those characteristics present a challenge for me. I also have a difficult time drawing for YowaPeda. I liked watching the show a lot, but I didn't really fall in love with the characters enough to really want to draw them and such.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
Well y'all already know I'm in absolute love with Haru so Free! is definitely top of the list here. "Oh no I hate seeing art of my fictional boyfriend" c'mon. Free!'s also the only sports anime I've read a noteable amount of fanfic for. Oh heck Yuri on Ice would be on the list now wouldn't it??? Love me some Viktuuri art. Not sure about the fic because I started reading when the series was ongoing and haven't really read since.
I appreciate good Haikyuu!! content though! For reference, on Tumblr, I have 1,164 pages of posts in my Free! tag; 185 pages of yuri!!! on ice (which came out 6 months ago); 187 pages of Haikyuu!!, and like 3 pages of YowaPeda >.>;

What should we call you?
Please call me Pax!

What got you into sports anime?
Free! was my gateway anime, and from there I ended up in Yowamushi Pedal, which lead me to my first SASO... and here we are.

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
YP is my favourite, even though objectively it isn't that good at all. I'm so desperately attached to the characters, though, and being a part of YP fandom has led to so many good things in my life.

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
*collapses on the track with Teshima and Aoyagi and cries with them*

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
There are a lot of characters that I relate to on one level or another, but sports anime characters tend to be a lot more motivated than I am. I think the closest for me is Makishima from YP. I understand the awkward, uncomfortable thing.

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
Obviously, YP is pretty easy for me, since it's my "home fandom". HQ is pretty good for me, too, especially Nekoma, but I've never felt super comfortable with ones like Daiya. Too much sport in the anime, maybe. I like the ones that focus more on character.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
I actually don't consume a ton of YP just because the fandom's so small and it's hard to find the specific things I want. I think in terms of gross fandom entertainment value, I've gotten the most from HQ, though I'm also very much enjoying Yuri on Ice.

1. What should we call you?
Hi, my name is Mels. He/him or she/her pronouns are both fine.

2. What got you into sports anime?
Oh lord, okay so once upon a time in 2015… Actually, we gotta go back to 2013 when I participated in HSWC, which was an event exactly like SASO but for The Fandom That Shall Not Be Named. Anywho, I rode and died in that event for two years, but there wasn’t going to be a 2015 version of it, but there were plans to have a sports anime version of it. I hadn’t watched any sports anime, but I got scouted onto a team anyway, mostly for my spreadsheet abilities, with no expectation for me to participate with making content. But that’s not in my nature, so I watched Yowamushi Pedal to figure out what I was getting into and I promptly got hooked. Then I consumed as much sports anime content as I could before Bonus Round 1 so I could actually do fills, and then everything kinda snowballed. So here I am in hell.

3. What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
You know, it’s really hard for me to really put a finger on why Prince of Tennis has its claws in me so hard, but… In addition to the fact that it has my fav character, I think a lot of it has to do with the team as a family feel, and the close bonds across everyone on the main team.

4. Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
Every single time my OTP stands next to each other.

Honestly though, Inui asking Kaidou to be his doubles partner like this makes me wail every time.

Bonus callback:

5. Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?

If you don’t know already, Inui Sadaharu from Prince of Tennis is my everything.

6. What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
Hold on, lemme pull up my spreadsheet of all the qualifying anime I’ve watched to make sure I don’t forget anything…

So my main SASO fandoms are Prince of Tennis and Yowamushi Pedal, and those are generally the easiest for me to pick up prompts for because I’ve had a lot of practice. I can do Daiya no Ace fic, but I’m a bit pickier about what characters I can write in that one. I’ve done Haikyuu in the past, but I’m a bit rusty and I’m not current with the series, unfortunately. I’ve also watched Yuri on Ice, Angelic Layer, Princess Nine, Oofuri, Hikaru no Go, Love Live, Slam Dunk, and Saki (some to completion, but not all of them) so I might dabble in these fandoms, some with higher difficulty than others depending on my familiarity.

7. Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
Prince of Tennis is where I will inhale content, because I love repping for tennis and sharing good content that I find. For the other fandoms listed above, I will generally just read based on what friends produce or what gets rec’d to me (mostly just because I don’t have as much time to consume content as I’d like, so I generally don’t unless it’s shoved in my face orz).

8. Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!
You can talk to me most easily on twitter [twitter.com profile] blue_mels. I also have an Ao3 ([archiveofourown.org profile] blueminuet) that is woefully not up-to-date. The SASO party never ends.

1) What should we call you? - I'm Chess! Chess Gale, Chessterfield, Checkers, Draughts, the vast enemy of sport and self.

2) What got you into sports anime? Way back when I was hardly a pawn on a field of black and white, I read Eyeshield 21. It was super fun and beautifully drawn, so of course the thing that made me fall in love with the genre at all was the incredibly melodramatic and scratchy art style that is Yowamushi Pedal. I'm hardly "into" sport anime, but I have a select few that keep me continuously attached to creating - YowaPeda, Ballroom e Youkoso, and Teppuu. The genre captured me because I love the exploration of competition intertwined with borderline fantasy, an almost - but not quite - sense of magical realism imbuing a given space of normalcy.

3) What do you love about your favorite sports anime? - Yowamushi Pedal is melodramatic as all get out, and holy hell, so am I. It is slow and careful and borderline obsessed with letting us know everyone's thoughts and reactions and personal catch to the situation. Though it strongly fits what a genre is, it also is a series centered around the internal, and that is what sticks with me every time I step away from it, in a way that no other series manages to trap me. I love the setting and how it centers itself around mountains, that sense of unending space and travel, both highly present at the same time as being deeply ethereal in the endless ride to the top. Also, it has Manami Sangaku, and that's basically all that matters to me.

5) Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels? - Any Manami moment - "I threw it away," Miyahara yelling for Manami not to lose, Manami saying farewell to Onoda, Manami being weird nonsense, the entire Irohazaka race holy heck. Non-ywpd related, Chinatsu in Ballroom talking about giving up on dance.

6) Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who? Manaaaaaaami Sangaku. To a slightly lesser extent, Chinatsu Hiyama of Ballroom e Youkoso. But gotta love that #BeingDead. Smile real big anyway.

7) What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why? The only series I can reliably make that #CONTENT for is YWPD, and that's only for the most questionable ship --- but it's fun, and I love bikes, and I love the characters deeply. It was my second real fandom, and it's stuck with me as very easy to produce content for. On the other side of the coin is EVERYTHING NOT YWPD, but of what I enjoy, I /struggle/ to make content for Teppuu, even though it desperately needs more.

8) Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why? - YWPD, Ballroom, Teppuu, and ... whatever my friends write? I've read for HQ!! and Daiya and Tenipuri and other fandoms because of interesting concepts or people I enjoyed merely because of curiosity and how much I liked their writing. That's something about sport fandom I appreciate - being able to approach the fanwork even when I don't care for the actual canon.

9) Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!

What should we call you?

Yo yo yo, I'm Dokuhan, but you can call me Doku if that's to long.

What got you into sports anime?

I saw Free! because I was super curious about what everyone thought was so great and really enjoyed myself. Then I saw Haikyuu!! and completely fell into this hell. Now I do panels about sports anime at conventions and I wrote my grad admission essay about one.

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?

Ahhh, it's hard to say because I like different ones for different reasons. A lot of it relates to the characters. I just love character driven stories and sports anime are great for that.

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?

Okay, so like...90% of Touch. Especially the moment in the second season that takes place a year after Kazuya dies in the accident and Minami says "We'll do our best to live. We're proof that Kacchan used to live in this world." Like, ugh. Slay me. Goddammit Touch.

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?

So I recently found myself identifying a lot with both Yuuri and Yurio from YOI. Yuuri especially. I also see a lot of myself in Miyuki (especially if we go the "he's an asshole to hide his hurt" route) and Daichi (in that I'm constantly low key dadding).

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?

I like to think I'm really good at writing content for Haikyuu!! since I can really slip into those characters. I think I do a pretty decent job with Daiya too. I have a really, really hard time starting up stuff with Free! though and I can never seen to get a handle on Oofuri, but I wanna try this year. I can't do Yowapeda at all despite binging the show because no one sticks out for me enough.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?

Give me everything.

Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!

Literally just Google "Dokuhan" and you'll find EVERYTHING.

What should we call you?
George or Babs

What got you into sports anime?
YowaPeda, I think? That's the first one I remember being into. Things kinda snowballed from there.

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
Oh no, I am so bad at picking favorites. On the anime side of things, I love the character (and character designs!) of YowaPeda and All Out. On the manga side of things, I love literally everything about Teppuu and all the girls in Ballroom e Youkoso.

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
Teshima and Aoyagi at the training camp :(

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
Makishima! Awkward stick-insects with too much hair, unite! Also Yumi-chan from All Out- feels fondly towards rugby teams and easily distracted by adorable baby animals.

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
It tends to come down to prompts/ideas, ultimately. I love writing for Teppu, but I don't know if I'd call it 'easy.' That said, I can't write DnA for beans.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
I love consuming content for all my small fandoms: Teppuu, Ballroom e Youkoso, and All Out, because I love them to death and can't get enough of them. I also enjoy YowaPeda and Haikyuu stuff.

Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!

1. What should we call you?
please call me ps! she/her pronouns are 👌

2. What got you into sports anime?
someone i followed on tumblr started reblogging yowapeda gifs and i got curious. i started watching yowapeda around a time when i was feeling lonely so i fell pretty hard for it. by the time i'd caught up with the anime (it was late 2014) i wanted... more... sports...... so i watched oofuri, hq!! (season 1, then switched to manga), knb, daiya, chihayafuru, and i'm still determined to finish prince of tennis at some point

(technically i'd watched hikaru no go on my twitter half's recommendation before yowapeda and i loved it very much, but i didn't really make the connection that there was more content out there)

3. What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
yowapeda will always be a fave if only because i came across it at the right time in my life. i love the theme of friendship, i love the characters and how intense they are about each other, i love that several of them are canonically ugly, i love the lively art style of the manga (ya i really do), i love the extras at the end of each ep. yowapeda is the reason i started writing fic so i will always be extra fond of it :')

4. Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
i mean, recently i started crying because i saw arakita wearing a vest in the anime, so. i'm easy.

5. Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
lots of faves, but i can't think of anyone i find relatable.

6. What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
everything is difficult ;;

i do have an easier time with ywpd and hq!! content, probably because i've spent the most time thinking about their canons and have already written a fair amount for them.

7. Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
i think i've read at least one fic for every sports anime i've watched. that said, i've found it hard to keep up with fic during saso, so i'll read whatever i see being rec'd or shared on twitter (regardless of fandom! i read prince of tennis fic long before i started watching it, and it was because of saso)

8. Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!

What got you into sports anime?
An LJ friend was watching Prince of Tennis, so I gave it a try. That was back in 2004, I believe, and it's still my forever fandom, even though I love a lot of other series too, most recently Yuri!! on Ice.

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
Prince of Tennis is batcrap crazy. And it has my beloved OTP, Inui/Kaidoh. <3

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
The final volume of Slam Dunk made me ugly cry for at least 30 minutes.

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
Prince of Tennis because I've done it for so long. YOI because I'm in so deep.

For SASO, I'm hoping to write tenipuri, YOI, Haikyuu!!, Slam Dunk, and, if I can get thorugh the anime in time, Daiya no Ace.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
Tenipuri, YOI, Slam Dunk. I love them so.

Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!
All the places! My DW is reasonably active these days. Also:

1. What should we call you?
Please call me sk! (or SK or s-k or whatever) My pronouns are she/her. :)

2. What got you into sports anime?
Man I don't really know... I watched a lot of Pokémon and Cardcaptors as a kid, which segued into Hikaru no Go and Prince of Tennis at a certain point. I guess I got really into sports anime as a specific genre because my good friend princesssid did, too!

3. What do you love about your favo[u]rite sports anime?
HOW DO I PICK WHICH ONE IS MY FAVOURITE. Uh. Well what I love about all my favourites is that people work hard, are passionate, and support each other. And are extremely weird about each other.

4. Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
Did not even have to think about this: the prize goes to Hikaru no Go, for the following dialogue:
How long have you been playing?
One thousand years. [tandem thumbs up]
Hikaru and Sai giving someone a cheery thumbs up--Hikaru is saying 1000 YEARS as if it's a normal thing to say.
CHILLS EVERY TIME.

5. Have you found a relatable favo[u]rite in a sports anime? Who?
I don't know... I really love Yowapeda's Toudou, because he is silly and extremely dramatic and EVEN MORE EXTREMELY dedicated? But I don't know if he's relatable... (Same goes for Oofuri's Tajima!)

6. What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
I don't think I find it easy to make content for anything, to be totally honest! Even when I'm solid on characterization, I spend a lot of time googling to make sure I'm not being an ignorant Canadian about setting. That said, I enjoy (or would enjoy!) making content for Hikaru no Go, Oofuri, Chihayafuru, and probably some others I'm forgetting.

7. Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
Same ^^ plus Haikyuu, Kuroko no Basuke and Yowamushi Pedal...

What should we call you?

Marks, marksy, or marksykins are all fine. Occasionally people call me Marty, and that’s also fine. I use she/her pronouns!

What got you into sports anime?

I was bored many years ago and a lot of my friends got into Prince of Tennis all at once.

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?

You say that like I have a favorite! THEY ARE ALL MY FAVORITES. But honestly, it’s always the relationship-building and character growth. I’m not really in it for the sports, though I certainly can hold a conversation about them.

Example conversation from my life:
“Why do you know so much about volleyball?”
“Uhhhh.”

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?

This is an extremely abbreviated list:

Prince of Tennis
* Inui stopping Kaidoh from going crazy during the finals at Nationals.
* Kaidoh tying his bandana around Momo’s knee during their Rikkai doubles match.
* Oishi playing Tezuka to be a regular at Nationals, and later when Eiji got mad at Oishi for that.

Yuri!!! on Ice
* Victor’s flashback to last year’s Grand Prix banquet.
* Victor and Yuuri’s ring exchange in front of the church.
* YURIO HAD NEVER BEEN ASKED TO BECOME FRIENDS BEFORE!
* Basically any time Yuri Plisetsky expresses any emotion other than anger.
* Phichit’s ice show.
* Yuuri's GP finals' free skate. I was a sobbing mess.

Haikyuu!!
* UH TSUKISHIMA’S ENTIRE ARC. ALL OF IT. I have many, many Tsukki feels.
* That time Yamaguchi chickens out on his serve and Ennoshita comes to his defense and Tsukishima hands him a towel.
* And when Yamaguchi FINALLY hits his serve during the second Seijoh match. I also have a lot of Yamaguchi feels. Do that very easy math.
* Daichi getting hurt and losing a tooth.
* Whenever Suga gets to be Mr. Refreshing setter during a match.

Slam Dunk
* Kogure telling Mitsui to grow up.
* Basically any time Mitsui hits a three-pointer.
* Any time Yohei waxes poetic over Sakuragi.

Hikaru no Go
* Ugh, literally everything.

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?

I feel like that photographer lady from Prince of Tennis sometimes.

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?

I’ll give basically everything a go once, but Yuri on Ice has been kind of a puzzle for me, since Yuuri and Victor are so textual and in love. I LOVE it, love love love it and them, but sometimes the plot ideas aren’t there. Prince of Tennis is probably the easiest sports series for me to write for, just because I have so much practice at it.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?

I’m deep into a Haikyuu!! spiral right now because I just finished it last month, but really whatever. I bounce around a lot. Though if someone suddenly wanted to provide me with a ton of new Slam Dunk fic and art, I wouldn’t complain. :D

What should we call you?
I'm Tea! koala also works. i'll respond to most things, probably, to be honest? I'm a shipping olympics veteran, so it's v possible you've seen me around.

What got you into sports anime?
i go to sports anime when i need something light and fun. one can only deal with too many Deepe Philosophical™ shows before they go nuts, so i use sports anime like a breather.
What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
oh god. well that'd be oofuri by about a mile, and i just love all the in-depth, multifaceted characters and relationships, the fact that they all have parents that play an active role, and the themes of communication and dealing with anxiety. It just resonates with me a lot.

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
oof. definitely oof. hq!! is fun, but not super emotional for me, and same goes for Free!, despite how much I enjoy the shows.

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
predictably, Abe and Mihashi. from oofuri. Mihashi has like the most relatable anxiety i've ever seen in my life, and Abe has a stubborn thick-headedness but also deep loyalty and compassion, and i love the progression their relationship goes through. Also, even when Abe thinks Mihashi is just an obstacle he has to deal with and can barely understand a word he says, he still listens closely to him, pays attention, and makes a huge effort to understand. that's the part that got me, i think...

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
any series where i know the characters well i find it p easy to make content for, and difficult when I'm not familiar. or when they have super complicated designs (lookin at u, fire emblem). sports anime tends to make that aspect very, very easy :'D and ofc i'm way more drawn to create content for characters I relate to, because exploring their dynamic and mindset is easier and more interesting. which is not to say i don't love creating content for characters i don't relate to at all, but it doesn't come as easy.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
p much anything i'm into. for sports that's oof and haikyuu and a little free! sometimes, i've read or seen a couple others but i don't know them as well. lately for non-sports it's been fire emblem, bnha, atla, and dragon age/mass effect. plus a lot more, but those are the ones i can name off the top of my head. i love reading different takes on my faves, and of course art is always nice to look at. i love seeing different interpretations and styles and whatnot.

Dreamwidth ate my first comment, so LET'S TRY THIS AGAIN!

1. What should we call you?
::slips on MIB shades:: Certain requirements of my employment mean I am obligated to disclose that my given name is "Laura", but seriously I've never been more than legally attached to that name, and moreover would just be confused if you called me that. I would assume you were talking to one of the many other Lauras. You can call me Psiten (pronounced Sigh-ten, the P is silent). They/them pronouns please!

2. What got you into sports anime?
The first SASO-included fandom I ever saw was Hikaru no Go, in college, after which I promptly learned how to play Go because that is the correct response to seeing HikaGo. However, it was Prince of Tennis that really sunk my battleship. I fell down that rabbit hole... geez. Almost 15 years ago? And I have never looked back.

3. What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
First, if you ask, I can give you a short dissertation on the connections between TeniPuri characters and Warring States Period generals, which is fascinating imo, but also... TeniPuri has NO SHAME. They know it's over the top, they know you love it, everything you are seeing on screen is real. Check the playback on the sideline cameras, Echizen is actually sparkling with concentrated essence of Tennis, and yes, it made Yukimura shield his eyes, yes Momo just asked why the Captain is glowing, yes that was a pink mushroom cloud. IT'S ALL REAL. There's a reason why I headcanon this universe as being the same one as Sailor Moon. People are used to this bullcrap.

4. Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
There have been a lot of Moments, and a lot of Feels, but I'm going to go with the point where Fuji finishes his National Tournament match against Niou, and immediately asks Tezuka if he wants to play a game later. I won't say more because of potential spoilers.

5. Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
Well, since Macross isn't a sports anime, I can't say Lynn Minmay. But after considering several characters (including Izumi from Princess Nine, Oikawa from Haikyuu!!, and Shinobu from Chihayafuru... and yes there is a pattern here), I'm going to settle on Manami Sangaku from Yowamushi Pedal. Yes, I can see you turning sickly pale. I know. He's got the crazy eyes. But let's face it, so do I sometimes. But mostly, we're both "geniuses" at our chosen callings but kind of seriously airheads and if you try to hold a conversation there is a solid chance that we will say some weird-ass crap. Moreover, there's that quality that Fukutomi talks about when he explains why he left part of the race against Onoda to Manami: he has a hard-coded NEED TO WIN. And that same thing becomes his mental/physical downfall. He can and will push himself past safe limits because he's just that darned competitive. Well, there's a reason my housemate made me promise on my life to be on Grandstand this year, and that's because SASO death is real, folks. SASO death is very real.

6. What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
Writing for TeniPuri, especially anything including Atobe or Yukimura, is kind of like breathing. Atobe/Ryoma especially is my brand, although I have been known to write Atobe with other people on request because Atobe does not keep his love from the world. He sings it from the rooftops, with a live television crew broadcasting it around the globe. Everyone in Prince of Tennis is just so... self-evident. Get into voice, get them on a tear, and the words just happen. As for what's hard, I wouldn't put that down to any particular fandom. It's more about scenarios, and what scenarios will be hard to write is unpredictable.

7. Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
I have a spreadsheet for this, which needs to be updated to include Yuri!!! on Ice (among other things): Have a link. If it doesn't open on the "Baitable Relationships" sheet, use the tabs at the bottom to find it. For those who don't want to leave this page, my top five are probably: Prince of Tennis, Chihayafuru, Hikaru no Go, Haikyuu!! and Princess Nine. For this year's fandoms, the new content I'm looking forward to seeing the most is Mononofu, so please bring it on!!!

8. Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!
I am psiten on every single platform, which should make it easy to find me. The only exception is tumblr, where I don't actually live because tumblr would eat me alive, and while I'm technically on LiveJournal, I never go there anymore so it's easier to find me in places that aren't there. bmmq! :>

What got you into sports anime?
It goes waaay back to when I first watched Prince of Tennis! I was a wee youngin then =u=;; I got more active in the sports anime fandom again after I started reading KnB and Haikyuu, but what really got my heart tugging was Oofuri!! And from there I spiraled further down into sports anime hell ;u;

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
Oofuri is definitely and will always be my fav. I can watch and read it over and over a million times and never get tired of it. The emotions are all there man. But to answer the question!! I love the characters sososososo much. I think its because it feels so much like slice of life but still has all the excitement and competitiveness of sports animanga that really makes me feel emotionally connected to the series. Also Mihashi is just a precious birb

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
I have a lot of hit-me-in-the-feels moments. I'm weak ;o;
SPOILER WARNING (just in case anyone hasn't watched yet)
- Oofuri: definitely has to be when Abe gets injured and grabs onto Mihashi's wrist and then the moment they lost the game and Mihashi cries and they hug
- Free!ES: When Makoto confronts Haru about the future. Also when Rin finds out about Sousuke's shoulder. BYE
- Daiya no Ace: Chris-senpai. The End.
- Haikyuu!!: Karasuno third years embracing and crying after their win against Shiratorizawa.

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
Mihashi from Oofuri and Yachi from Haikyuu, the nervous, anxious wrecks.

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
It's not a matter of series for me but my lack of creativity and ideas that make it difficult to make content =u=;; It also depends on my level of obsession and my attachment to the character(s), but even then I have a hard time. I say Oofuri is my fav sports anime but I rarely draw for it... OTL I'm mostly drawing for Haikyuu and Free as those have my ships I currently feel the strongest for ;u;

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
ALL OF THEM BECAUSE OF FEELS WHY ELSE. But I am here this year especially for Haikyuu, Free, Oofuri, DnA, DAYS, and Giant Killing (the soccer anime fandom so small //cries I am here to make content for you guys wait for me!!). I want to give all my rarepairs some loving :'>

what should we call you?
shay! omg i am so new to all of this i hope i am doing it correctly

what got you into sports anime?
everyone on tumblr was talking about yuri on ice, so i checked it out and while i thoroughly enjoyed it i was in the fandom for a hot minute before someone said "if you like yoi you should check out haikyuu" and i watched 3 seasons and read the entire manga in under a week

what do you love about your favorite sports anime?
haikyuu believes so firmly that everybody has inherent value and is worth respect--and also that everyone can learn and grow and become better versions of themselves--that it's written into every individual & team arc. the story treats each character with such grace and generosity, and it is absolutely one of my favorite things ever.

which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
this might be cheating but the training camp arc in the hq manga had me bracing for a humiliation/prove-them-wrong type of narrative and it was so so amazing to be completely incorrect

have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime?
YES, YACHI. also i feel deeply for yuuri katsuki.

what series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for?
i haven't done too much in the fandom yet ;-; but hq is a lot of fun just cause there's so much variety in characters & dynamics!

similarly, what series do you like to consume content from?
i'll read/consume almost anything i have context for! i'm currently watching bnha so a lot of that probably, haha.

What got you into sports anime? Free! was probably my first true hook. I will be forever charmed by Rin's disaster mouth and his even more disaster shoujo manga tears. Haikyuu and Yowapeda are the ones that truly got me into fandom, though.

What do you love about your favorite sports anime? I LOVE YOWAPEDA SO GODDAMN MUCH. It's. Hm. How do I even qualify. I love how much the sport isn't limited in high school scope, I love how big their entire world feels. I love how it makes everything else feel limitless: the eternal chase, the mountain peak, friendship, the uncertainty of loss and the even bigger uncertainty of victory.

I also love my sports anime son, Imaizumi Shunsuke, and look forward to his continued success in the realm of fictional bike racing and plot twist beefy arms.

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who? Not really, but who doesn't relate in some way to Kiyoko Shimizu ghosting every idiot boy who tries to talk to her.

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why? Yowapeda is my heart and home, I'll always feel most at ease there; a Haikyuu is extra fine, too!! I'm just here this year to volley some balls.

Everything else is much harder, I'm a real baby about other series, but I'm trying. KNB, Free!, and Chihayafuru, mostly.... it's really about what the prompt is about, I think. If you really wanted to bait me, you can see what I've done last year here.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
All the ones listed above!! But man, I'll probably do most things I have a passing knowledge of and a spark of interest. YOI, Shokugeki no Soma, and Gundam Build Fighters, especially, since those are the ones I can't create well for, but love a lot.

What got you into sports anime?
my friends started watching haikyuu!! and I quickly got very very invested too; before that I had already watched free! though

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
The character's interactions, Oikawa, the matches, the animation, the characters, the art!!

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
The Karasuno vs Seijou end in the first season finale :´´) also free's last episode of first season; recently YoI was also a rollercoaster of emotions and is still one

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
Yes! Oikawa, Haruka, Rin, Yuuri, Yachi...

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
hq because I'm already used to draw many of the character (drawing is hard but for my loves anything)

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?

What should we call you?
Mousi usually in fandom, but i'm one of the 298854374 saras in the world

What got you into sports anime?
I think Prince of Tennis or Hikaru no Go was my first one? Tons of my HP friends moved to PoT and I ended up following.

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
Right now that'd be either Yuri on Ice or else Haikyuu, but I think in general my favorite animes are always ones where all the guys on the team have a good backstory and are introduced thoroughly enough that you really care about them. It's amazing Yoi made me care about all of them in only 12 eps, usually it takes longer animes for that to happen. I love character growth. Hikaru no Go having Hikaru actually grow up made my entire life.

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
Yoi destroyed me emotionally every week for its whole run. But Yuri esp, his tantrums and frustration, but also his weird friendship overtures to both Yuuri and Otabek. Yuuri and Phichit's best friend flashbacks.

Hikaru no Go can still make me sob at the drop of a hat.

Haikyuu, Tsukshima's character arc in Season 3, and Yamaguchi's in season 2. The moment when Ukai's voice actor switched over (NOOO). How Hinata and Kagayama both want a team to belong to so badly. Sugawara getting to come on the court and play at Nationals. TRAINING CAMP. GYM 3.

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
Yuri (Plisetsky) is my favorite in Yoi because I find his inability to connect to people his own age/most people around him entirely relatable, and also the way he covers it up by insisting he doesn't care or getting mad. I also associate heavily with how Kuroo from HQ is clearly the bad choices senpai.

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
Lately all I can do is write Yoi and I'm not even sure why. It's all I want to do, and I have six stupid slice of life ideas for it a day. That hasn't happened since HP. But I will say that I find Victor/Yuuri hard to write, but it's more like i'm entirely satisfied with what happened so I don't have much to write about it. I do write HQ, but sometimes it's the same, where I like the canon so much that I don't have much I want to fill in myself.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
I write and consume all the same stuff, basically.

What should we call you?
Rina or Deci! (I'm new to SASO but hopefully one of these is unique! <3 Otherwise, please slap a #2 on me and we'll carry on!!)

What got you into sports anime?
Oh! Eyeshield 21 was one of my first manga, and I was charmed from the get-go by the cast of characters and their struggles. And somewhere along the line, I learned the rules of American Football! This promptly became my way of learning the rules of the various professional sports-- Daiya, YowaPeda, TeniPuri, HQ!!!, and Whistle! have also taught me a lot, and I adore team dynamics so sports anime occupy a very dear part of my heart. (A moment of thanks to all the random audience characters who provided this much needed exposition and then promptly disappeared, never to be seen again.)

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
My favorite sports anime is probably Daiya, because the characters and situations are very...real, for lack of better explanation. You see inter-team rivalries, the fact that your favorite team (if you can pick one, it does an excellent job of attaching you to opponents in half-episode spans) won't always win, that people get injured or damaged and lose valuable time to recover, that third years graduate with or without goals being reached, that new students are talented and intimidating but are also inevitably compared to the greats who left, that people of different personalities and body types can find themselves drawn to the same sport and how camaraderies get built out of necessity and pride. I just...really like it, despite not being in the fandom at all.

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
There are lots! But this is the one and its aftermath is what's stuck with me the most over the years:
Hiruma gets tackled OUCH OUCH

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
I'm relatively new to writing for sports anime, so this is a bit of a general answer! Usually, it's easy for me write series with characters that make sense in terms of their development-- whether I like them or not, if there's something they care about and they are driven towards it, it's fun to write! Group interactions are also A+++ so I find it easier to write for series that develop teams as a whole as opposed to a few characters. Really specifically, YOI is the only fandom I've ever really struggled to make content for, mostly because I find it really difficult to write Yuuri.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
I've only really been involved in HQ!!! fandom as a consumer! Partially because HQ is enormous I'm a sucker for IwaOi and partially because it's the fandom that most of my other friends are also active in! I'm hoping that participating in SASO will help me branch out to other sports fandoms (and I'm quite excited to see everyone's lovely work <3)!

What should we call you?
either kt or karahashi is fine for here!

What got you into sports anime?
I've always loved watching sports IRL so this was really just the natural progression of things...

What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
It's hard for me to pick favourites but TeniPuri is probably the sports series of my heart purely because of how vast and hilarious and heartwarming the canon body of work is!

Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
Hikaru no Go, ch 124-129.

Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
In general I prefer characters I don't relate to, so :P My types are either unapologetically confident, earnest hard workers, generally apathetic/unaffected, and/or vaguely frivolous (but genuinely caring) & friendly :D

What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
Big series or big ships are difficult for me, personally, mostly because I tend to get overwhelmed by how much there content there is to analyse re: characterisation/timelines! Writing for comedy series or individual sports is easier for me as a result because characterisation is more flexible/explored and the sport itself is more focused.

Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
I'm a super omnivorous consumer, but I have a personal preference for straight sports series/comedy series over character growth-driven series. Again, I find individual sports easier to keep track of than team sports, but there is also more content for team sports, so I'll read a lot of those anyway :P
This year, in addition to the usual big fandoms, I'm excited to be able to do things for Keijo, Mononofu and Robot x Laserbeam! (and lots more, but.)

I really wanted to do a voice meme even though I had to go to the echo-y stairwell to record and I had to be kinda quiet but!! Here it is anyway lol

Kept it short so it wouldn't be tedious, so I will go into a little bit more detail here:

What should we call you? Whit, she/her
What got you into sports anime? Like I mentioned, I was coming off another fandom in late 2014 and just kind of roaming around, not really big into anything else when a friend suggested I watch Haikyuu!! with her and like I had been out of anime fandom for a while at this point and I really didn't expect to like sports anime but she gave it a glowing recommendation and said I'd enjoy it and hey what do you know-- she was right! From there one thing kind of led to another and now here I am, in sports anime hell,
What do you love about your favorite sports anime? Haikyuu!! still has such a special place in my heart because like. Part of what made it so perfect for that time in my life was that it's just genuinely so uplifting and heart-warming. Everything about it just seems to be imbued with love, y'know? I think it was the first time in a long time that I'd experienced media like that, and it was just what I needed. Plus it led to me making new friends!
Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels? It was really tough to choose one LOL Like I had to pause the recording to think about this. I picked the relay in Free! Eternal Summer but tbh other moments that came to mind were the end of the yips arc in Daiya no Ace, Karasuno losing at the end of Haikyuu! S1, all of Teiko arc in Kuroko no Basuke... It's hard to pick!!
Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who? Not really? There are characters where I find certain aspects of their personality relatable: Yuuri from Yuri!!! on Ice with his anxiety and self-doubt, Haru from Free! with his uncertainty about the future and quiet stubborn nature, Eli from Love Live! with her fear of doing something new for her... I'm sure the list goes on LOL (And there seems to be a pattern here...) But for the most part there isn't any one character where I'm like "!!! It is me!"
What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why? I find it difficult to make content period LMAO which is why I join SASO! Because I hope it'll give me an environment that helps me make stuff! I'd really like to surpass the number of works I made last year.
Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why? Pretty much any series I've watched/read, depending on my mood!
Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you! I am on Twitter literally All Of The Time so that's absolutely your best bet to find me!

what should we call you?
hi hi, call me andrea! o/

what got you into sports anime?
once upon a time--circa 2013, i think? woah--a friend linked me to the pv for free!s1, and it seemed like a good, fun time until suddenly i was already six episodes in and lying on the floor, wondering what to do with all these [vague hand gestures] feelings, lol. i've been drifting from series to series ever since c:

what do you love about your favourite sports anime?
but which is My Favourite Sports Anime? i'm like that person who stumbles into a series and accidentally adopts 50 new children, oops. that said, i really, truly adore daiya--baseball is so fun to watch for me, and i love the emphasis on personal and interpersonal growth among the characters, and how one feeds into the other, while never fully distancing from the sport. honourable mention to yoi, however, because i've been keeping up with irl figure skating for years and i'm so glad this show exists, tbh.

which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
When Miyuki Kazuya Smiles, Laughs, Breathes, Exists....but real talk, my heart still does the clenchy thing when miyuki goes home for winter break and does the not-talky thing with his dad before heading into their apartment and seeing sushi with two pairs of chopsticks waiting....clenches fists, clenches heart,

have you found a relatable favourite in a sports anime? who?
yuuri & victor from yoi: yuuri's struggles trying to negotiate between his ambitions and his anxieties/self-doubts, and victor's bright performative tendencies, that clash between how you feel vs. how you're expected to be seen? anyway lowkey (high-key) every episode of yoi made me Super Emo

what series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? why?
recently i'm struggling to make, uh, any content o o p s (hoping saso will help me boot my butt gently back into gear lmao). interestingly, yoi, particularly victor/yuuri, is the only series i've really felt challenged trying to write content for? myb because i'm so satisfied with how actual canon went down, that i feel i don't have much to contribute. writing for smaller fandoms/less prolific ships is v satisfying for me, though, in that Be The Change You Wish To See kinda way!

that said, i've written for: daiya, hq, ballroom e youkoso; some oofuri, & knb

similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? why?
i'll read pretty much anything! funnily enough tho, for someone who finds it hard writing for yoi i've spent SO much time in the tag recently, lmao.

where you can find me:
twitter is pretty much your best bet!! you can find me there on [twitter.com profile] kaoruindous and [archiveofourown.org profile] intimacies (my remade account with not much on it, you can find most of last year's saso stuff and other fic on [archiveofourown.org profile] commovente)
