SASO 2017 Icebreaker: Voice/Text Meme

IB - Voice/Text Meme

Interested in being a part of SASO, but don’t know anyone else who might be participating? Feel like making some new friends who love sports anime just as much as you do? If your answer to either of those questions was “yes,” then we’ve got a meme for you to play in!

To participate, answer any or all of the questions below, either by typing them out into a comment to this post, or by recording your answer and uploading it onto a website like Vocaroo or SoundCloud and then pasting it into a comment to this post. You’re free to answer questions in any way you like, however we ask that you keep your answers appropriate for all ages.

  1. What should we call you?
  2. What got you into sports anime?
  3. What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
  4. Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
  5. Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
  6. What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
  7. Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
  8. Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!

Once you’ve left a comment with your answers, go check out and reply to your fellow anime fans! Who knows, maybe you’ll find someone who gets just as emotional over that one episode of Haikyuu as you do? We sure hope you do, and we hope you’ll stay tuned throughout the next few weeks for more icebreaker games! (This round ends on May 5.)

Dreamwidth ate my first comment, so LET'S TRY THIS AGAIN!

1. What should we call you?
::slips on MIB shades:: Certain requirements of my employment mean I am obligated to disclose that my given name is "Laura", but seriously I've never been more than legally attached to that name, and moreover would just be confused if you called me that. I would assume you were talking to one of the many other Lauras. You can call me Psiten (pronounced Sigh-ten, the P is silent). They/them pronouns please!

2. What got you into sports anime?
The first SASO-included fandom I ever saw was Hikaru no Go, in college, after which I promptly learned how to play Go because that is the correct response to seeing HikaGo. However, it was Prince of Tennis that really sunk my battleship. I fell down that rabbit hole... geez. Almost 15 years ago? And I have never looked back.

3. What do you love about your favorite sports anime?
First, if you ask, I can give you a short dissertation on the connections between TeniPuri characters and Warring States Period generals, which is fascinating imo, but also... TeniPuri has NO SHAME. They know it's over the top, they know you love it, everything you are seeing on screen is real. Check the playback on the sideline cameras, Echizen is actually sparkling with concentrated essence of Tennis, and yes, it made Yukimura shield his eyes, yes Momo just asked why the Captain is glowing, yes that was a pink mushroom cloud. IT'S ALL REAL. There's a reason why I headcanon this universe as being the same one as Sailor Moon. People are used to this bullcrap.

4. Which sports anime moment got you right in the feels?
There have been a lot of Moments, and a lot of Feels, but I'm going to go with the point where Fuji finishes his National Tournament match against Niou, and immediately asks Tezuka if he wants to play a game later. I won't say more because of potential spoilers.

5. Have you found a relatable favorite in a sports anime? Who?
Well, since Macross isn't a sports anime, I can't say Lynn Minmay. But after considering several characters (including Izumi from Princess Nine, Oikawa from Haikyuu!!, and Shinobu from Chihayafuru... and yes there is a pattern here), I'm going to settle on Manami Sangaku from Yowamushi Pedal. Yes, I can see you turning sickly pale. I know. He's got the crazy eyes. But let's face it, so do I sometimes. But mostly, we're both "geniuses" at our chosen callings but kind of seriously airheads and if you try to hold a conversation there is a solid chance that we will say some weird-ass crap. Moreover, there's that quality that Fukutomi talks about when he explains why he left part of the race against Onoda to Manami: he has a hard-coded NEED TO WIN. And that same thing becomes his mental/physical downfall. He can and will push himself past safe limits because he's just that darned competitive. Well, there's a reason my housemate made me promise on my life to be on Grandstand this year, and that's because SASO death is real, folks. SASO death is very real.

6. What series do you find it difficult/easy to make content for? Why?
Writing for TeniPuri, especially anything including Atobe or Yukimura, is kind of like breathing. Atobe/Ryoma especially is my brand, although I have been known to write Atobe with other people on request because Atobe does not keep his love from the world. He sings it from the rooftops, with a live television crew broadcasting it around the globe. Everyone in Prince of Tennis is just so... self-evident. Get into voice, get them on a tear, and the words just happen. As for what's hard, I wouldn't put that down to any particular fandom. It's more about scenarios, and what scenarios will be hard to write is unpredictable.

7. Similarly, what series do you like to consume content from? Why?
I have a spreadsheet for this, which needs to be updated to include Yuri!!! on Ice (among other things): Have a link. If it doesn't open on the "Baitable Relationships" sheet, use the tabs at the bottom to find it. For those who don't want to leave this page, my top five are probably: Prince of Tennis, Chihayafuru, Hikaru no Go, Haikyuu!! and Princess Nine. For this year's fandoms, the new content I'm looking forward to seeing the most is Mononofu, so please bring it on!!!

8. Lastly, let your fellow SASOers know where they can find you if they want to chat with you!
I am psiten on every single platform, which should make it easy to find me. The only exception is tumblr, where I don't actually live because tumblr would eat me alive, and while I'm technically on LiveJournal, I never go there anymore so it's easier to find me in places that aren't there. saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame

Like, seriously, the only reason I'm disclosing it is because I have three options when it comes to my workplace background checks:

1) Tell them my online handle.
2) Tell people online my given name so that I can honestly say that no significant number of people know me exclusively by an alias.
3) Lie to the [name of researching agency redacted].

Yeah I getchu, luckily I've never been in a situation like that and hopefully never will be. Even if this whole professor thing works out I can just be like "well I mean, fan studies is a big part of why I'm here" and leave it at that.

It's a tough spot in some ways! But I made up my mind a long time ago that if I was going to do government-adjacent work, I needed to be able to state without shame every dang thing I do as a hobby. And honestly? The people researching my background have def seen worse, while I wouldn't trade my current job for ... anything, atm.
