Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

Ahhh, that’s such an awesome fill! I’m a suck for family conflict so I love that you started it off with Shuusuke thinking about Yuuta’s leaving. The contrast between the ninjas and the Order of St. Rudolph is great (and I love that you called it the Order of St. Rudolph, it’s very Knight Templar!) as is the fact that Fuji did do preliminary investigations! Because he’s such a good brother, really.

other, darker rumors about the tricks he uses to ensure his subordinates' undying loyalty to him

delighted sounds I would read an entire fucking fill about Mizuki mindgaming/fucking Yuuta into obedience, no joke.

Also I love Fuji STILL not rushing and being so calculated about it. Also this bit! “Akashi's destruction is far more thorough than what he could have managed alone”

AHahahaha. DON’T POSTURE AT AN EMPEROR.

Yuuta refusing help and Fuji refusing to have his help be refused is PERFECT, as is Fuji pretending to be surprised he’s chained up as a slave instead of used as a trusted advisor. flailing motions Such a good fill, I can’t wait to read more of this verse!

this prompt is something really precious to me and your fill is! so! soft!! It feels like a warm hug, he thinks to himself. It feels like Kagami. this line was already enough to melt me, i love that, it's so warm. they're just so happy and wrapped up in each other; kagami taking care of nigou, too, and the little promise in their exchange about the sweater and coming over was just. so sweet. i love this a lot aaa

"Bro, I need some help." Kuroo approaches him just as their last match is over, his face oddly serious as he seizes Bokuto by the shirt and pulls him aside.

"Bro, what, bro?" Bokuto asks him dutifully as his fellow captain and friend of three volleyball years. He waves to Akaashi and the others as he leaves the gym with Kuroo. Akaashi has that look on his face again, that strained, pinched expression he gets from time to time during camp, which comes out whenever Kuroo is around. It makes him look like he has indigestion and Bokuto makes it a point to ask him how he is later.

"So," Kuroo starts as soon as they get to the back of the school building, secluded enough that the chances of anyone walking by were low. It must be important for Kuroo to pick out such a spot and Bokuto nods at him just as seriously. "You know Sawamura, right?"

"Karasuno's captain, wing spiker, great receives, about yea high?" Bokuto confirms, raising a hand to nose level.

"A bit taller," Kuroo corrects his hand position. "He's not the shrimp. But anyway, you know him, right?"

"Yeah?"

"And, uh, what do you think of him?"

"His receives are seriously, seriously good," Bokuto tells him truthfully. "But he seems kind of shouty."

"Yeah, I don't want to hear that from you." Kuroo raises a brow at him.

"So what's up with him? You going to challenge him to a best captain showdown or something? Am I invited? Or is this a trash heap thing?"

"No, no, no, I'm not going to challenge him," Kuroo denies vehemently, flapping his hands. "But I do want to, uh, ask him out to something?"

"Oh, bro," Bokuto says reverently, his tone hushed as it dawns on him. "You want to take him out, not as a competitor, but on a date?"

"Yes?" Kuroo's voice breaks and he drops into a crouch on the grass, hiding his face in his hands. "Oh god, why am I talking about this with you again?"

"Because I am the god of good fortune and looooove," Bokuto sings, following him into a crouch and peering excitedly into his face.

"Just because you accidentally set Saru up with his girlfriend that one time doesn't make you a god, Bokuto."

"You should tell him," Bokuto says. "Just pull him out one romantic night and confess your feelings for him."

"You make that sound so easy," Kuroo replies, his voice muffled by his hands.

"How else would you do it then?" Bokuto crosses his arms over his chest.

"Well, I've kinda been flirting with him ever since the training camp started..." Kuroo uncovers his face.

"The advanced tactics. Nice."

"But he doesn't seem to be responding to my advances." Kuroo buries his face in his hands again.

"If by flirting, you mean making a bad joke every time they get a penalty, I think you're just pissing him off actually."

"Ah." Kuroo props his chin on his hand and looks contemplative.

"Is that all you've been doing?" Bokuto prods.

"No, no," Kuroo says. "I mean, every time Sawamura looks my way I kind of just..." He smirks.

"That's definitely going to piss him off. Heck, it's pissing me off right now. It looks like you're laughing at his pain and misery from the penalties."

Kuroo looks crestfallen. "No way, I mean I even included a wink so that it looks flirty and all—"

"Wait, wait, wait," Bokuto waves his hands before him. "Do your flirty face again."

Kuroo blinks but he rearranges his expression back into his previous smirk and Bokuto stares intently at him.

"Did you wink?" Bokuto asks.

"Yeah, I did."

"Wink now."

Kuroo's eye shuts and opens while he maintains his smirk and he complains with his face still frozen in his flirty face, "I feel kind of dumb doing this in front of you."

"Wink again."

Kuroo does as he is told and Bokuto falls back on his haunches, his face serious. "I know what's the problem."

Kuroo looks alarmed. "What?"

"It's your cool hairstyle. I can't see your other eye so I can't tell if you're winking or just blinking."

It occurs to them, a little too late, that neither of them have any idea of what they're doing.

Tooru thought that it would be okay, that it wouldn't matter that he has no idea what he's getting into with his first ever kiss because at least it's with Hajime, and at least it's something that they can both work out together. Now, with their lips pressed together and Tooru's hands resting on his knees as they both kneel on the floor of his room, it doesn't feel quite as easy as he let himself believe it would be.

Hajime pulls back, and Tooru almost surges forward to keep their lips joined out of fear that he's moving away because he's decided that he doesn't want to do this any more. Tooru holds still though, blinking his eyes open as Hajime sits back on the floor. Tooru takes a deep breath, licking his lips, and sits back down as well, giving Hajime an embarrassed smile.

"Kissing is weird," Hajime mutters, but then he's leaning forward again, not kneeling up this time but holding himself up on his hands and knees, so he can lean across the space between them, bumping another clumsy kiss to Tooru's lips. He hums quietly. "But it feels nice?"

"Yeah," Tooru says against Hajime's mouth, and their lips brush against each other as he forms the word. That feels weird too. He leans back enough that he can speak properly, letting out a small, nervous laugh as he does. "I thought this would be… I don't know. Easier. Better."

"It's still good," Hajime murmurs, and kisses Tooru again. "I don't mind it. You weren't good at volleyball when you first started either, you know."

Tooru smiles slowly. "Are you expecting me to get as good at kissing as I am at volleyball, Iwa-chan?"

Hajime rolls his eyes, but his ears turn a little pink. "That's not what I meant. It's just that, well, this is something else that we can do together, right? Something we can practice with each other until we're both better."

"And you want to," Tooru realises, smiling as Hajime takes his face in both hands.

"Yeah," Hajime says softly, pulling Tooru close and giving him a slower, lingering kiss this time, just keeping their lips pressed together for a long time before finally pulling back. "I really want to try."

Tooru beams. "Me too."

Considering it was what bought the three of them together in the first place, it was probably to be expected that all their dates wound up with them playing rugby. There were attempts to have non-rugby dates: lunch at the park (a great place to practice), a movie (an action film that got Gion so riled up they'd wound up playing), even study dates (which inevitably ended with at least one person getting bored and suggesting they play “just for a little bit”).

Sumiaki didn't mind. He wasn't as rugby-mad as Miyuki and Gion, but he always had fun with them, and he liked seeing how happy they got when they played. Gion was getting better, through practice at school and playing with Miyuki and begging tips off the Ryouin team. And Sumiaki always had fun playing with Miyuki.

Not that three people could play rugby very well. In fact, Sumiaki had the feeling that if the Jinkou team could see them “practice,” Captain Sekizan would suggest they incorporate better drills, Hachioji would ask whether they were using protection in that tone of voice, and either Ebumi or Oharano would snort and say it was more of a glorified game of grab-ass.

They weren't doing anything inappropriate, not really. They were in public most of the time. It was just that, when Gion tackled Miyuki or Sumiaki, he liked to sit on them and gloat. And Miyuki was a little more hands-on than was customary when he gave them advice or told them about a cool move he'd seen on TV. For Sumiaki's part, he admitted he probably didn't have to be quite so thorough when brushing dirt of Gion and Miyuki's clothes.

They liked rugby, and they liked each other, and those facts were knotted up together, to the point where Sumiaki sometimes wondered, late at night and at his most anxious, that if they stopped liking one thing, they wouldn't like the other anymore. If he quit rugby again, or if Miyuki started liking someone from his own school, what would happen?

But the rest of the time, between Miyuki's texts and smiles and Gion's gruff affection, it was easy not to think about upsetting what-ifs. Sumiaki was playing rugby again, on a team he liked and believed in. He had two great friends, great more-than-friends, a fact he still sometimes couldn't believe.

And whenever he doubted, he just had to look at his cellphone background, a picture of the three of them, covered in mud, beaming, arms wrapped tight around each other, to know that things would be ok.

Aomine expects him to be there.

That's the thing that gets Kuroko the most, on the lonely afternoons when he walks home from practice on his own because Aomine is skipping practice again, and the rest of their teammates are off doing their own things, no longer the cohesive group that they once were. Aomine is skipping practice more than he is showing up these days, not even another passing face in the crowd but someone Kuroko can't stop looking for, only to never find him. He's never there, but Kuroko can't shake the fact that Aomine still expects to find him, exactly where he last left Kuroko, like only one of them can move forward at a time, and it's always Aomine's turn.

Kuroko bears it quietly, thinking that it's just what he needs to do. He loves Aomine enough not to turn away and make him face whatever he's dealing with on his own, but he isn't sure it counts when Aomine never turns around to acknowledge his presence, just one step behind. Kuroko has Aomine's back, no matter what comes, no matter how hard Aomine tries to ignore him.

It turns out in the end, that there's only so much Aomine can push him away before it begins to work.

Kuroko doesn't mean to move on the way he does; he isn't giving up on Aomine and he doesn't think that he ever truly will, but there's a difference between giving up and giving in. There's no point in a tug of war when only one side is pulling, and there's no point in waiting for the day when they can see each other properly again if only one of them is waiting for it to come.

So he stops. He stops reaching for Aomine's fist bumps, already knowing full well that they'll be ignored. He stops passing to Aomine when he knows that Aomine will just steal the ball himself when his opponents aren't enough of a challenge. He stops trying entirely, and it doesn't make a difference. He feels a little foolish for hoping that it would. Aomine doesn't notice him, like Kuroko is the one whose face has faded into the rest of the crowd. Aomine doesn't notice his absence any more than most people notice his presence. It hurts more than Kuroko wants to admit.

Aomine doesn't notice at all. Not until they're standing on opposite sides of the court and for the first time in far too long, it feels like it's Kuroko's turn to move forward, not Aomine's.

By then, it's already too late.

Square: The truth of the matter is replacing you is so easy

Kuroko doesn't start off with the intention to replace Aomine. What he wants isn't quite that simple; he just knows that the point he's trying to make is not one that he can make on his own, and it's not going to carry the same meaning to it unless there's an entire team backing it up.

Still, when he first meets Kagami, his first thought is the fact that while he gives off his own light, it's a slightly different kind. He chooses to take it as a good sign; he doesn't know if he would get very far with someone who was exactly the same as Aomine, too likely to fall into the same mental traps, too prone to being prideful, instead of listening to others.

Kagami is a gentler light than Aomine's; bright, but not harsh. The kind of light that Kuroko could hold his hands up to, and see the red outline of the blood in his hands, reminding him that he's a person, and not just a shadow.

So Kuroko chooses him, becomes the best kind of shadow that this particular light will need, and goes from there.

He doesn't realise, until it's already begun, that he's not just replacing Aomine as a basketball partner.

It starts with the way their hands will brush against each other while they walk, and neither of them will pull apart to make sure it doesn't happen again. It's the easy contact, the hands resting on each other's backs in silent support, the way they sometimes don't need words at all. It's an understanding that goes both ways, off the basketball court as well as on it. The kind of relationship that Kuroko would have liked with Aomine, had things not gone the way they had, if Aomine had any space in his life for Kuroko, in amongst the rapid pace at which his skills were developing.

Kuroko doesn't forget Aomine entirely, but he becomes more of a concept that anything particularly solid. When he thinks of leaning against someone after a difficult afternoon of practice, it's Kagami's shoulder he rests his head on, Kagami's hand that rests on his back to support him. It's Kagami's presence, big and loud and familiar beside his, that he learns to incorporate into his misdirection. It's Kagami's even footsteps that he gets used to hearing on the footpath, beside his.

It's Kagami's kisses that Kuroko accepts eagerly, and this is new territory that not even Aomine has charted before. He's been left behind, whether Kuroko intends it or not. He's been overwritten, until it's Kagami in all of Kuroko's techniques, in all of his thoughts.

The light here feels warm, and gentle.

Getting the four of them to share space is difficult enough on a good day, and it's even worse when the weather is bad. Aomine is only ever too lazy to move, or too restless to stay inside, and he's out in the rain now, challenging Kagami to another one-on-one. There's a street ball court close enough that they can see it from one of the windows in Kagami's apartment and Himuro stands there, watching them chase each other through the rain as it gets heavier.

"They're going to get sick," he mutters, mostly to himself.

Murasakibara, already wrapped in a thick blanket and sitting on the couch, huffs quietly. "That's their own fault. There's no point in worrying about them when you know that they're not going to take care of themselves anyway."

Himuro sighs. "I'm going to worry. Especially because I'm going to be the one taking care of them when they get sick anyway."

"That's because you care too much about everything," Murasakibara mutters, pulling one of his arms out from under his blanket and reaching for HImuro. "Just come here."

Himuro smiles, stepping away from the window and letting Murasakibara pull him close, until he's sitting on the couch as well, part of the blanket wrapped around him, already warm from body heat. He shuts his eyes, leaning back against Murasakibara, and lets himself relax.

Which is when lightning flashes across the sky, soon followed by a loud crack of thunder. Himuro sighs, making to get up again, but Murasakibara holds him down.

"Atsushi," he says, pulling against Murasakibara's grip. "They're going to keep playing in the storm unless someone calls them inside."

"They're big enough to take care of themselves," Murasakibara replies, as if he doesn't let Himuro take care of him whenever possible.

Himuro is about to protest, when the door opens, and both Aomine and Kagami walk inside, dripping wet from the rain.

"Towels," Himuro sighs. "Both of you. Go."

Aomine and Kagami look at each other, lips curling into matching grins that say they were doing more than just playing basketball in the rain. Himuro rolls his eyes fondly, watching as they both head towards the bathroom to dry off and change.

"Give me a moment," Himuro murmurs, turning around and pressing a kiss to Murasakibara's lips.

"No." Murasakibara holds on tight. "I'm comfortable with you right here, you know."

"I'm making hot chocolate to help warm them up," Himuro replies. "I'm making it for all of us."

Murasakibara holds on for a moment longer, before he finally relents. "I want extra chocolate in mine. And marshmallows."

Himuro smiles and kisses him again. "Of course, Atsushi."

“You should come with me to Touou Academy,” Aomine said lazily, drawing circles against Kuroko’s damp back. His fingertips swirled in well-learnt patterns, sweeping over the smooth skin and the hard ridges of bone underneath; it was hypnotic, in the way that anything so familiar that it’s comforting wass hypnotic, but Kuroko would not let himself be hypnotized.

“They didn’t ask me,” he said but it’s a parry and they both knew it.

“They want me bad enough that they’d ask you too if I said to,” Aomine said, though there’s a rare hint of uncertainty in his words. The guy with the glasses hadn’t seemed as keen on having Aomine as the coach had been but it’s not like Kuroko would have to be on the team. Just in the Academy and its dorms.

“Maybe,” Kuroko said, eyelashes tangling together as he nuzzled a kiss to Aomine’s chest. “But that would still not be them wanting me.”

“I want you. Isn’t that enough?” Aomine’s fingers swept up Kuroko’s back, rubbing at the back of his neck. The sheets under them felt too hot, enough that Aomine rolled away to a cooler part of the bed and then beckoned for Kuroko to come to him.

“No.” Kuroko’s eyes opened, endlessly blue and endlessly filled with regret. If sorrow was an ocean, Kuroko was drowning. Aomine felt his own breath catch in his throat, a lump he struggled to get past as Kuroko kept speaking. “You only want me for this. You don’t need me for basketball anymore.”

“So what, basketball’s more important than us?” Aomine was never good at arguing, not when it came to words. He reached out and grabbed Kuroko’s arm, pulling him closer to kiss him. Their mouths met, all pressure and pain and pleasure mixed together, and Aomine bit hard at Kuroko’s lower lip for the thrill of hearing Kuroko gasp. “More important than this?”

Kuroko pulled back and held his hand up, fingers curled into a tight fist. For a second, Aomine thought Kuroko was going to hit him and then realized - oh. The fist bumps.

“We were friends before anything else,” Kuroko said softly as Aomine stared at his fist. “This doesn’t feel like friendship.”

“It’s better,” Aomine said, curling his hand over Kuroko’s fist and pushing it down against the bed.

“Maybe for you.” Kuroko rolled over, exposing his back to Aomine and hiding those accusing eyes of his. “I’m not going to Touou Academy.”

Kuroko won’t shut up about Kagami.

It’s Kagami this and Kagami that and Kagami’s really improving and Kagami has amazing dunks and --

Aomine shuts him up with kisses, time and time again, and fears the day that Kuroko will break away from the kiss, shining-eyed and wet-lipped, and tell him that Kagami is a better kisser.

It only gets worse after Seirin beats Kaijo. It’s not that Aomine’s particularly attached to Kise but Kise had always been his little heroworshipper, second only to Aomine in skill. If anyone is going to ever catch up to Aomine and beat him, it should be Kise.

But Kagami beat Kise. Does that mean Kagami is the new contender? The new potential challenge?

No, a dark and bitter part of him whispers. Kagami has Kuroko at his side. He’s not a new challenge. He’s the new Light. Kuroko is replacing Aomine but Kagami will never be able to beat Aomine 1v1. He’ll always need Kuroko there with him.

Kagami will never be good enough. Not to beat Aomine alone, not to take Kuroko from him.

“You should have come with me to Touou,” Aomine says again, in bed with a Kuroko who’s growing steadily more distant from him with every step he takes closer to Kagami.

The North Pole and South Pole are both poles but one man cannot be at both at the same time. Kuroko’s trekking down the planet and he’s at the Equator now, bathed in Kise’s brilliance, and Aomine needs to draw him back.

“Then I would’ve never met Kagami-kun,” Kuroko points out and he smiles (smiles!) just at mentioning Kagami’s name.

Being stabbed in the stomach would have hurt less, Aomine thinks as his words come out in a snarl. ”That’s the point.”

Kuroko’s eyes widen in understanding, his smile blossoming into a sly curve. “Are you jealous, Daiki?”

“No,” Aomine lies. “I’m looking out for you. He’s going to outgrow you soon and leave you behind too. And then you’re gonna be crushed a second time.”

He skips over the fact that he was to blame for the first time but both of them know it.

“Kagami-kun isn’t like that,” Kuroko says and Aomine wants to strangle him for his certainty.

“You said he’s like me, how I used to be,” Aomine says instead, fingertips twitching against Kuroko’s thigh.

“Yes,” Kuroko agrees placidly. “But not exactly the same. There are things he wants more than basketball.”

Like you? Aomine doesn’t quite dare to ask. Kuroko’s an innocent in so many ways. If he hasn’t realized yet what his adoration of Kagami is, Aomine won’t be the one to tell him.

“Is there anything you want more than basketball?” Aomine asks instead and realizes his mistake as soon as he’s spoken.

“Yes,” Kuroko says simply. The graze of his fingertips against Aomine’s jawline feels like a butcher wondering how to best strip the skin away. “I want you back.”

“I’m right here,” Aomine says and they both know it’s a lie.

Kagami’s light is too dim.

Aomine knows that now. He’s played Kagami one on one and yes, the boy has potential - but that’s all. He isn’t even strong enough to bring out Kuroko’s full potential. He’ll never shine so brightly that he dazzles the court.

He wants to laugh but when Momoi asks, he says only that Kagami was disappointing.

The next day, he waits outside the Seirin school gate for Kuroko to arrive. Skipping a day of classes won’t matter much to Aomine. As long as he doesn’t get put on academic probation, he can still play and that’s all the school wants of him.

The walls of Touou Academy are thin and he’s sure all his teammates know that he’s fucking Kuroko. That doesn’t matter. It’s one of those privileges allowed to game-changing players.

Maybe Imayoshi had a word with Wakamatsu to make sure he never taunted Aomine about it. Maybe Sakurai listens with his hand down his pants and apologizes mentally the whole time for such a disgusting act as eavesdropping.

Aomine doesn’t care. Not as long as Kuroko is his.

The bell rings and finally, Aomine sees Kuroko approaching the school gate - with Kagami. Good. Let Kagami be there when Aomine takes Kuroko away. To the victor goes the spoils, right? He remembers hearing that from some class. Maybe English.

He beat Kagami. Kuroko is his now.

“Aomine-kun,” Kuroko says in surprise once they’re close enough to talk, “Why aren’t you at school?”

“Not feeling well,” he lies obviously. Kuroko should smile at how pathetic an excuse it is but his eyes are grave so Aomine steps it up a notch. “I need some TLC, Tetsu. Come make me feel better.”

“Isn’t that Momoi-san’s job now?” Kuroko asks, pulling out his phone. “I’ll call her and let her know you wandered over to Seirin in your fevered state.”

Kagami’s scowling but not saying anything. Aomine can’t resist rubbing it in a little more by leaning down and pressing his forehead against Kuroko’s.

“See how hot I am, Tetsu? I’m burning up. It must be a terrible fever.”

To his surprise, Kuroko steps back and Aomine has to windmill his arms gracelessly to not fall forwards.

“Then you shouldn’t come too close to me, Aomine-kun. You could make me fall sick as well.”

“You can’t fall sick.” Kagami slings his beefy arm over Kuroko’s shoulders and pulls him back. “I need you.”

Something in Kuroko’s expression changes at those words, the way it used to change when Aomine said ‘I love you’ (and how long has it been since he’s said that, he suddenly wonders), and Aomine feels sick.

He won the battle and lost the war. Kuroko isn’t his anymore; something inside Aomine dims.

Even their builds are similar. Kagami’s all thick, strong muscle, broad shouldered and tall. When he’s above Kuroko, he blocks out the light, casting his shadow over Kuroko.

Sometimes, if Kuroko lets his eyes half-close, Kagami becomes nothing more than a silhouette that’s so similar to Aomine’s.

*

Aomine presses him down against the bed and bites at his throat.

“No marks,” Kuroko reminds him, fingers curling in Aomine’s hair to tug his head down lower. The locker room showers means that any mark at all will be noticed, even if it’s normally covered by clothing but worse than that is the fact that marks are bruises.

Marks hurt and make Kuroko less adept at basketball. He can’t afford to give up even the slightest edge.

(He won’t have them find out via seeing the marks someone else left on him.)

*

Kuroko bites at Kagami’s shoulder and sucks fiercely, his hands spanned out over one of Kagami’s thick thighs. Kagami’s such a good player that a few bruises won’t make any difference and Kuroko likes seeing them when the thin straps of the jersey slip aside.

Kagami’s tanned and Daiki’s brown, so neither of them mark too easily. Kuroko has to work at it to leave his marks on his boys, the oval circles of ownership that flash obscenely when they launch themselves into the air for those beautiful shots.

*

Before the Seirin vs. Touou match, Kuroko takes care not to mark either of them. He considered marking them both, leaving matching marks on their throat, but it’s not worth it. Not yet.

He needs to know who wins first. He needs to prove that Aomine was wrong.

*

Aomine wins.

Kuroko spends the night in Kagami’s bed.

*

“I told you he’s too weak,” Aomine says, smugly satisfied, and rolls his hips slow and hard the way Kuroko likes it. “Even you couldn’t fix that.

“I will,” Kuroko says, the raggedness of his voice not detracting from the confidence. “Even you weren’t at this level when you started out. Kagami-kun will also improve.”

Kuroko arches, his next words delayed, and then locks his gaze onto Aomine’s hazy, pleasure-darkened eyes. “I’ll make sure of it.”

*

Come back to me. Come back to me!

And so the fisherman baited his hook not with a worm but a shark and threw it into the depths, waiting to see what would rise to fight for its territory.

Psychological warfare has always been Akashi’s forte but for Aomine’s sake, there is very little that Kuroko won’t learn.

Before the match, while they’re still in the private hallway that leads up to the court, where it’s just their two teams and their coaches and them, Kuroko makes his move.

He steps forward, yanks at Kagami’s jersey to get his attention, and then jumps up. He slings his arms around Kagami’s neck and kisses him, dangling like a sloth against Kagami’s stronger body. Kagami’s quick enough to wrap his arms around Kuroko and support him, crushing Kuroko against him instead of pushing him away.

This is the riskiest part of his plan but Kuroko guesses right; Kagami does not reject him, does not get shocked at this show of PDA, does not worry about being outed while being a part of the conservative, somewhat homophobic world of professional sports.

Kagami kisses back and as the storm of hissed comments and whispers breaks around them, all Kuroko can think is thatthis is real confidence.

Aomine’s watching, Kuroko knows, but he doesn’t look for Aomine once the kiss is broken and Kagami lowers him gently to the ground once more. It’d assign too much importance to Aomine if Kuroko looks at him right after kissing Kagami.

Some people would be shattered by such a betrayal and be off their game because of it.

Aomine, Kuroko knows (just as he knew Kagami would kiss back), will play all the harder.

*

Seirin wins and Aomine smiles.

Kuroko stands still and drinks it in; it’s the sun’s warmth after a cold winter in a cave, it’s light after being locked in a dark room for days.

It hurts to look at but the pain’s so sweet that Kuroko can’t look away.

He did this. He made Aomine smile like that.

Winning was a team effort and it was Kagami who went head-to-head with Aomine but it was Kuroko who set it all up. It was Kuroko who didn’t lose faith in Aomine and it was Kuroko who fought in every way he knew how to bring Aomine back to himself again.

*

“I told you,” he says later, his arms wrapped around Aomine’s waist and his head resting against Aomine’s chest. The steady thump of Aomine’s heartbeat has never been so loud before. “I told you that he would beat you.”

“I’ll beat him next time,” Aomine says, grinning wide and wolfish. His hands span over Kuroko’s back, cupping his shoulderblades, and Kuroko tilts his head back to smile up at him.

“Thanks, Tetsu.”

The words linger in the air and acting on impulse, Kuroko presses up on his tiptoes to touch a light ghost of a kiss to Aomine’s mouth. He smells of the locker room soap that his whole team uses but underneath is the unmistakable scent of Aomine, of clean skin and musk and charred charcoal glowing white hot.

“I love you,” one of them says, and neither is sure whom.
