Bonus Round 1: Quotes

Bonus Round 1: Quotes

SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

PLAY BALL! For this round, we'd like you to take inspiration from songs, sayings, poems, and other kinds of famous words.

Because this is our first full round, please read this post carefully before proceeding!

This round ends at 7PM on June 13 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!" -Kermit the Frog
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Yachi & Kiyoko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Yachi/Kiyoko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • You cannot fill your team's prompts or your own prompts.

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

None, Rated T for some suggestive themes
Word count: 856

“So…how was it?”

Haru couldn’t stop a little smile from crossing over his face. Rin sounds so nervous. But Haru guessed he couldn’t blame him, since it was their first date, and Haru knew what a romantic, sappy perfectionist his friend (no, cross that. Boyfriend) was.

“It was fun. I really liked it.”

“That’s…that’s good,” Rin said, sighing with relief. “You know…the dolphins kind of reminded me of you.”

“How so?”

“Well…” Haru noticed Rin shifting closer to him. “The way they swim looks pretty similar to your swimming style.” He was even closer now, and Haru could tell from the tone of his voice that he was flustered. “And…they’re just really elegant, graceful animals in general.”

Haru felt Rin slowly, slowly taking his hand, entwining their hands one finger at a time. Even in the dimness of the evening, the park that they were walking through only illuminated by glowing orange streetlights, Haru could tell that Rin’s face was red. And he was completely averting his gaze.

“They’re beautiful, I guess,” Rin mumbled, his head still turned away from Haru.
Haru snorted, despite feeling color creeping up to his cheeks too. “Are you calling me beautiful, Rin? What a sap.”

“H-Hey!”

Haru smiled again (he was doing that a lot today) and gave Rin’s hand a tight squeeze. He felt Rin jolt for a second, before softly doing the same in return. And when Haru looked at him, he was looking downwards, a small smile on his lips and the softest look in his eyes.

Haru’s heart jumped a little at that sight.

They stayed like that for a while, walking through the near-empty park and holding hands, smiling to themselves and occasionally exchanging glances before blushing and looking away. The only sounds were those of the occasional passerby and the autumn leaves rustling and cracking beneath their feet.

After a few minutes, Haru heard Rin clear his throat.

“So, Haru-“

And then Haru felt something splatter against his cheek. He looked up.

A raindrop?

And then another. And another. And another. Soon enough, they were standing in the middle of a pretty generous downpour.

“Crap, crap,” Rin was muttering, wrapping one arm around Haru and using the other to shield his face from the rain. After a few seconds of slippery, near-blind running, they found themselves on a small bench, the only area having a shade covering it and therefore the only dry area.

“Wasn’t expecting that…” Rin chuckled weakly, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck. “You okay, Haru?”

“Yeah,” Haru answered, rubbing his hands up and down his arms. “Okay, but cold.”
“Oh, uh…” After fumbling for a few seconds, Rin was pulling off his jacket and hurriedly placing it on Haru’s shoulders. “This okay?”

Haru felt the same color creeping into his cheeks as before. “…Yeah. Thanks.”

Rin smiled, and then took Haru’s hand in his own again. Somehow, he seemed a little more…calm now. Less blushy, more composed.

There were a few more minutes of silence, the two of them watching the rain and holding hands, one of their thumbs occasionally brushing against the others. Despite the unexpected downpour, Haru couldn’t have been more content. The whole scene was just so peaceful and…picturesque, somehow, with the vibrant, warm reds and oranges of the autumn leaves, the leaves thudding against the gravel, and Rin. Just Rin. Holding his hand, being enveloped in his scent, wearing his jacket… Just him being there, in this moment.

“Hey, Haru?” Rin said, giving his hand a soft, somewhat shy squeeze.

“Yeah?”

“I just…wanted to thank you. For today. And for saying yes to, um…this whole dating thing.”

And there he went again, blushing and rubbing the back of his neck and smiling that soft smile…

And as if by sudden impulse, Haru was leaning forward and wrapping his fingers at the back of Rin’s neck and pressing their lips together. It was soft, really, a gentle, warm pressure that only lasted a few seconds. When they pulled away, Rin was looking at him with wide eyes, his face completely and utterly red despite the cold. Haru smiled, comfortably placing his elbows in Rin’s shoulders and letting his hands slide down his back.

“I should be the one saying that." Haru's voice became quieter, softer, and he was surprised to say that he felt almost shy. "Thank you, Rin.”

And after a second of Rin’s stunned staring, the impulse seemed to have taken over him, too, as he cupped Haru’s face in his hands and started to kiss him back. It was more passionate this time, with them experimentally sucking each other’s lips and playing at each other’s tongues. Despite the autumn chill, Haru felt warm. Oh so very warm.

How long they stayed like that, kissing and in each other’s arms, Haru wasn’t sure. He just knew that he wanted to stay here, kissing Rin, being with Rin, and feel like this all the time. This warmth in his chest, creeping to his stomach and eventually warming his whole body, this sensation that gravity had released him, and he was floating, and he was free.

(Dear god, this is probably the laziest, most cliche thing I've ever written. From all of the things I could've written from your gorgeous prompt, I choose a first date/first kiss thing :'D)

mild angst; no warnings
I... I had to. I hope it's close to what OP had in mind, and thank you for the beautiful prompt! ;^;

I Tried (442 words)

When he lay in the bed alone, he could see them.

Trophies— medals and statuettes; local; regional; national.

Pictures— of Rin and the two together; of stadiums; of podiums; of water.

When he lay alone in that too-big bed, he tried to keep his gaze fixed on the ceiling; if he looked over at the wall, he wouldn't be able to tear his eyes away.

Sighing was a truly unpleasant sign of emotion. It was resigned; it was lamenting. And Sousuke often sighed when he stared at that wall, alone in that bed.

At least... I tried…

In order to stare at that wall, he had to lie on his bad shoulder. The dull throbbing that sometimes came with the position was a good compliment to his state of mind.

Haruka Nanase would often come home late— later than Sousuke would have liked, but earlier than he expected. When he shed his swimsuit— reluctantly shed it, Sousuke always noticed affectionately —and crawled up into bed, he had a way of blocking the view of that damn wall.

"Good evening, Sousuke."

The blue-eyed raven touched his nose briefly to Sousuke's, and the later closed his eyes.

"'Evening, Nanase."

Haru pressed their foreheads together, then twined his fingers with Sousuke's beneath the covers. "We should take that stupid wall down."

"I told you— I like it there."

“I don’t even want it on display.”

“You should be proud of it.”

"I don't like the expressions you make when you're staring at it."

Sousuke laughed; although it was just a single, huffing breath, Haru knew it to be a laugh. "Don't say stupid things."

Haru softened, murmuring something indistinct and then kissing the other sweetly. Sousuke returned the affection, then winced back as his shoulder twinged under him. Haru nipped the other's lower lip as he drew away too, staring at his lover's averted face for a moment.

"Here."

Sousuke grunted with surprise as Haru pushed hard against his good shoulder, flipping him onto his back— off his old injury. Then the smaller crawled up onto his chest, nestling down into him.

"More comfortable," Haru murmured, and Sousuke smiled slightly.

"You're such a brat."

"Hmm..." Haru hummed noncommittally, eyes closed. And all Sousuke could do was sigh— a different type of sigh, less defeated than his usual sighs —as he brought one hand up to rest on the other's back.

"... I tried."

"You succeeded."

Sousuke growled softly. "You don't say?"

"Rin has nothing but respect for you," Haru said softly, eyes still shut. "And the same goes for me."

Sousuke fell silent for a moment, then closed his own eyes and grumbled, "Whatever you say, Haru."

some sexual content, 1124 words

"The next time you are brunette, and you do."

I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID THIS TO ME

I... FIXED IT (turns it into the romcom kikasa deserves)

This is basically Kasamatsu being really thirsty throughout like, the four seasons.

--

Kasamatsu is sure he’s never been angrier in his life.

The newly inducted first-years are running drills, and across the court Kise sinks the ball with a quiet creak that speaks of a touch on the basket so light and sure it might as well be flying, easy as nothing, and when he lands, he heads back over with a happy, pleased smile. But it’s a smile laced with smugness, like he had just outstripped and outmatched the entire team, and maybe he did; Kasamatsu can feel the pulse hot inside his head, the way his hands reflexively clench into fists at his side. Laughter, clear as air and just as empty, trails over his head as Kise walks by him (he is so fucking tall, how is he so fucking tall), keeps on walking like he doesn’t have a care for a single thing that gives this team meaning.

It is the first time they meet, and Kise is very beautiful, and Kise is just a little bit terrible.

Putting in one last run to wrap up the day, Kasamatsu feels his heart clench in a moment of clarity so awful he’s sure he’ll grind his teeth to nothing; he knows the remainder of his high school basketball career is doomed to be one of grief and suffering. Nervous around pretty girls, not nervous at all around pretty boys (or very nervous, a different kind of nervous altogether), and this is absolutely infuriating for someone with his eyes trained so clear and unclouded. But anger... anger, Kasamatsu thinks, this is anger, he’s such a shallow, stupid brat, of course I’m angry, look at him... just... he stops with a jolt, sweat sticking suddenly to the back of his shirt even in the cool spring air, and Kasamatsu forces himself to sprint the last of his run even though he’s exhausted, runs himself winded and lungs burning before he even tries to think again.

(Anger won’t do a thing to change the long lean line of Kise’s legs as they eat up the court; the flick of sweat off the wild, pretty throw of his chin; the way the morning light turns his hair to gold.)

Most days it’s fine, as Kasamatsu channels this anger into the steadfast drive for excellence that is his brand as Kaijou’s captain, pushes and prods and occasionally kicks this wayward ace into being their ace; he treats Kise no differently than any of the other first-years, sets him to punishing laps for stupid first-year shit like any of them. And there are so many stupid slip-ups, stupid excuses for missing afternoon practice, stupid pouting at Kasamatsu’s expense; and so there are many laps to be run. Sometimes Kasamatsu runs them with him, when the laps pile up and takes them deep into the evening, and it is in these mundane activities of their everyday lives, when they aren’t chasing after things so big it fills the whole of their sight, that Kise’s smiles go soft and distant, like for a single moment he can just forget the insatiable drive for more inside him. The smile is never for Kasamatsu, but he’s sure he’s fine with that, too.

But some days it’s less fine, when practice works them down to the bone, strips them of everything they have to give until they are bare and raw, and during some summer nights it’s so hot and Kasamatsu is so tired he can’t stop the mess of thoughts, of the way girls crowd around Kise, which ones would be brave enough to touch their lip gloss mouths to his (would Kise let them, yes, of course, that idiot would lap up their attention like the hungry, eager brat he is). He doesn’t know if he’s thinking about the girls or Kise, his head is just a soft focus blur of long bare legs and eyes sly with laughter; but Kasamatsu lets himself have the indulgence of a hand slipped under the waistband of his boxers anyway. When he comes, soft grunts muffled by a face turned into the pillow, the only thought Kasamatsu hangs onto in his desperation is the way sunshine would smell in Kise’s yellow hair.

Like summer. Like warm skin. Like green apples.

(Kasamatsu is not that kind of brave, not yet, maybe never, his mouth is a thin serious line and sometimes a grimace, and practice the following morning is especially brutal.)

It’s at the turn of the season, with the bright green leaves giving way to the soft flush of fall, when Kise shows up late again to another afternoon practice. Kasamatsu had given up on getting their ace in for the day, had run the last drills with a mind toward piling laps on him next practice, and was locking the gym when up walks Kise like he wasn’t two hours too late, and his face is framed in short layers of russet brown instead of the usual gold. Kise shoots him a brilliant smile and a wink. Kasamatsu can only stare back.

“Don’t you like it, Kasamatsu-senpai? They wanted a different look for the new magazine contract I just got, and--”

Kasamatsu feels frustration like an avalanche, lands a kick on Kise that sends him flying into a mound of leaves. Or it would have, if amidst the flurry of motion and a single dismayed yelp, Kise had not latched onto Kasamatsu and pulled them both to the ground in a sprawl of limbs. The leaves are still settling around them as they both groan heavily at the same time, winded momentarily by the fall, and it’s almost comical except in the way Kise is heavy, and Kasamatsu’s eyes go wide at the realisation that the skin where he’s gripping Kise’s wrists to prop him up is also soft, and this close the gold of Kise’s eyes is so intense it’s almost terrifying. A blush grows hot across his cheeks and down his neck, he can feel the heat creep across his body to pool in the pit of his stomach, and Kasamatsu knows that this is not the time, this is not the time to be brave--

With a smile, Kise leans down and kisses him. It’s gentle and chaste, tastes faintly of mint, and Kasamatsu learns just enough of a new kind of bravery in this moment to open his mouth for more.

(In the winter, when Kise stands on the court again and his mouth is filled so full of his heart and his tears, Kasamatsu will let him lean on the broad of his back, and the fall of Kise’s hair, once more yellow and gold, will sweep across the blue jersey like the promise of something different and new.)

(if you'd like something a little more shippy, op, i can certainly try for a sequel that has some smooches or something, but i wanted to give this a shot at least ;; sorry if it disappoints!!)

He's seated in the stands at a national sports competition, waiting for his turn; there's not much to do between matches but watch others. Taking in a different sport than his own had seemed appealing, a chance to learn and observe a discipline other than his own.

He's at the volleyball courts, alone. The rest of Rakuzan's starters are out to lunch, he thinks, but Akashi wants a bit of time to himself, time to be centered, breathe, prepare.

He didn't expect to cast such a keen eye on anything here, but Akashi cannot take his gaze away from the young man. Tooru Oikawa, the program reads -- captain of Aoba Jousai. He's impressive, to say the least. Oikawa is solid, almost rigid, in his focus, but moves across the court and falls to his knees with a fluid, almost graceful sort of movement.

His serves are weaponized -- precise, deadly with their intensity, and Akashi finds himself sitting up a little straighter every time Oikawa stands behind the line to demonstrate that particular skill again.

The final point goes to him specifically, a service ace that makes the entire gym shriek, but Akashi is silent, just staring, watching the boy collect himself. They've proceeded onwards in the tournament, but what's on his face for the moment before his teammates descend upon him isn't relief, nor joy: it's resignation, determination.

Akashi has never felt such kinship with a perfect stranger before. He recognizes that look perfectly, though -- knows it's mirrored on his own face at the end of every game. The sort of expression that only says, "onto the next". It is so familiar that Akashi frowns, uncomfortable. What a strange, disconcerting thing it is to see yourself reflected so clearly.

Oikawa's eyes burn the same way Akashi's do -- wild, fierce, with an anger behind them that shows how far they're both willing to go. That fire hasn't disappeared now that the match is over; Akashi feels sickly fascinated.

He watches Oikawa walk off the court, sees him favor one leg over the other just so, notes the brace there, and frowns deeper. Akashi understands that, too -- the damage done to him is not external, but he is without a doubt wounded from how far he's pushed himself.

He leaves, thoughtful, and still unsettled.

The players disperse after their time in the locker room, and Akashi makes no attempt to hide his presence when Oikawa finally exits, thankfully alone.

"That was commendable," Akashi says, well aware of how patronizing it sounds. The defiant clench of Oikawa's jaw, brief but not unnoticed, confirms everything Akashi has speculated.

It disappears, replaced by a wide smile, feigned cheerfulness, but his eyes betray him, still -- slightly narrowed, still burning. "Such high praise, thank you, stranger!"

Akashi doesn't offer his name, there's no need to keep the boy, but he can't deny having felt compelled to speak to him just once personally. It's only a few words, but that's okay -- it satisfies a little curiosity, makes him feel a bit... better, somehow.

They part. Oikawa watches him go, quizzical.

Later, when Rakuzan finally steps onto the court, he spots Oikawa in the stands with, presumably, a friend of his. They're chatting away, or at least they are until tip-off. Akashi refuses to consider that he plays especially rigorously because he has an audience, but regardless of why, his performance is stellar for the day. It is an easy victory.

Oikawa accosts him after the game as well, from behind, with a hand on his shoulder. He leans in, soft, smug, well aware he's poking fun -- "commendable, captain. Good game."

And if Akashi shivers, just slightly, for whatever reason, no one mentions it.

"I hope to see you play again," Akashi admits, to Oikawa, who is already retreating. That gets a laugh; it seems like a real one.

"It's too bad we don't play the same sport, but it might be better that way, huh?"

There's not exactly time to answer, but that's alright. He has a name, now, and a school -- he can keep tabs on his career, out of professional intrigue, of course.

And whether he does or not doesn't really matter -- he'll see Oikawa again, he's certain.
