Bonus Round 1: Quotes

Bonus Round 1: Quotes

SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

PLAY BALL! For this round, we'd like you to take inspiration from songs, sayings, poems, and other kinds of famous words.

Because this is our first full round, please read this post carefully before proceeding!

This round ends at 7PM on June 13 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!" -Kermit the Frog
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Yachi & Kiyoko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Yachi/Kiyoko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • You cannot fill your team's prompts or your own prompts.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

Where are you and I'm so sorry
I cannot sleep I cannot dream tonight
I need somebody and always
This sick strange darkness
Comes creeping on so haunting every time
And as I stared I counted
The webs from all the spiders
Catching things and eating their insides
Like indecision to call you
and hear your voice of treason
Will you come home and stop the pain tonight
Stop this pain tonight

Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head

((or, in which Asahi and Suga reach a gay singularity while also emotionally supporting each other magnificently))

Daichi had to leave practice right after it ended, leaving Sugawara to sweep the floor and lock up the equipment. Nishinoya and Tanaka left first – probably to go play video games at home after a long week of exams and practices – and the first years and other second years soon followed. Takeda and Coach Ukai decided to go out for drinks together, and Ennoshita needed some hard-earned sleep, so when the gym doors slammed shut for the second to last time that night, it was just Sugawara, his broom, and Asahi on the court.

"Are you sure I'm not in the way?"
"Don't mind, don't mind," Sugawara joked, cocking the handle of the broom toward Asahi. "As long as you gather all the balls you use and put them away for me, it's all good."
"Okay."

Sugawara plugged in his headphones and listened to an album he downloaded the other day while he swept the floor. First he walked around the perimeter, then the interior of the court; he trusted Asahi not to lop off his head with the force of his serves. He'd been getting better at them. Sugawara made a point of watching his older teammates, for often the achievements of the first years overshadowed their steady progress. He watched for their ticks that meant they were going to do spike technique A or serve C. Asahi always turned his feet to the left before doing a jump serve. If he was preparing for a quick, he cracked his thumb knuckles. When breaking through a block, he furrowed his eyebrows and rolled his shoulders, as if to summon all of his strength for one spike that could smash through brick walls. He tugged on his bun of hair when he was anxious. He scratched his ear when he was trying to focus. And, more than anyone else, Sugawara knew that Asahi had the kind of unmatched focus that really made him fit to be Karasuno's ace.

As he leaned against the wall and let the broom drop to the floor, Sugawara considered the idea that he watched Asahi more than he watched his other teammates. He licked his lips and toyed with the thought. Well, as a setter, that was only natural, right? It was a setter's job to be in tune with his spiker, get the ball to his hand and bring out the best of his skills. Daichi was big on defense, and the second-years other than Nishinoya and Tanaka weren't regular players, and didn't spend nearly as much time with him in his previous years.

He sat cross-legged and watched Asahi practice. Throw up the ball, three long steps forward, crouch, jump, smack, hit the edge of the court. Grab another ball, throw it up, five short steps forward, leap, smack, hit the opposite edge of the court. Another ball, a short toss, one lunge forward, an underhanded thud that made the ball drop just past the net. Sugawara pulled off his headphones. Asahi didn't so much as grunt when he practiced alone. Sugawara wondered if it was the stress that dragged his voice out of him.

"Is something wrong, Sugawara?" He didn't realize when, but at some point Asahi had ceased his practice and walked up to Sugawara with a look of concern. "You seem out of it."
A blush dyed his cheeks red as he jumped to his feet. "No, no, I was thinking, is all."
Asahi raised an eyebrow. "Is it getting late? You want me to pack up?"
"No, it's okay," Sugawara said, shaking his head. "Practice as long as you want. Just don't overexert yourself."
"I mean, I'm pretty much done..." Asahi trailed off, fidgeting with the ball in his hands. "So, if you wanna leave."
"I'll stick around." He smiled, and Asahi reciprocated the gesture. "How about I help with your spikes."
"Oh, sure!" If he wasn't over six feet tall, Sugawara might've said that he was bouncing up and down in excitement. "Yeah, that sounds cool. Yeah!"
"Alright, then let's do that."

Sugawara tossed the ball into the air, hit it once, and Asahi leapt and smacked it over the net. It landed just short of the midline.
"Too high?" he asked.
"Yeah, but I mean my jump was a bit off, so–"
"I'll toss it lower next time."
"Oh, okay."

A toss, a hit, a leap, a smack. The ball landed just off-center.
"How was that?"
"It was good, yeah." Asahi grinned and held his hand in the air. "Hit my palm perfectly."
"Cool," Sugawara replied, "glad to see I haven't lost my touch."
Asahi paused. "Yeah."

A rumble of thunder strolled in through the gaping windows. Sugawara would have to close them before it started pouring. He was about to grab the pole in the corner of the room, but before he could move, Asahi's hand clasped onto his wrist.
"Um." Sugawara glanced back at him, curiosity billowing in his eyes. "Koushi."
It was important. "What is it?"
"You're not dispensable, you know."
Sugawara tried to crack a smile, but it came out half-hearted. "I know that."
"You aren't." Asahi pulled him closer, and the blush on his cheeks grew darker.
"I know, Asahi," Sugawara said, assuring himself more than Asahi, "you don't need to–"

Asahi kissed him, and the sensation overwhelmed him. His scruffy beard itched his skin and his hands were thick with callouses but his every touch was gentle nonetheless. He fell into Asahi's chest and bent backward as Asahi leaned forward and held him close. His skin was sticky and he smelled like sweat but Sugawara didn't mind all that much. How could he mind, when he was the vice-captain of a boys' volleyball team?

Sugawara untangled Asahi's hair tie and let his thick locks hang loose. Despite its appearance, his hair was soft and easily melded between his fingers. Asahi trailed a hand up his back and held the nape of his neck, when a flash of lightning struck outside. A downpour of rain followed. "Ack!" Sugawara sputtered, breaking away from Asahi. "We have to close the windows!"
"Oh... oh!" Asahi broke out of his daze and shook back to life. "I'll–I'll help!"

They dashed for the pole hanging in corner of the room and held it together to push all the windows closed. Each one sealed shut and raindrops pattered against them in circular waves. The gym warmed up without the cool breeze, although the humidity remained. Sugawara let out a sigh of relief.

"Okay, so that's done." He wiped his forehead and turned back toward Asahi. "So, um..."
"I have an umbrella," Asahi said, meekness bleeding into his voice. "I'll walk you home."
"Oh." A grin curled onto his face – a genuine one, this time. "Why don't you invite yourself in?"
Asahi went tense, his eyebrows shooting up his forehead. "I-If you wouldn't mind, I mean, I'm not busy or anything so if it isn't any sort of intrusion...!"
Sugawara snorted. "I wouldn't invite you if it was."

Don’t panic
No not yet
I know I’m the one you want to forget
Cue all the love to leave my heart
It’s time for me to fall apart

Now you’re gone
But I’ll be okay
Your hot whiskey eyes
Have fanned the flames
Maybe I’ll burn a little brighter tonight
Let the fire breathe me back to life

Baby, you were my picket fence
I miss missing you now and then

no major content warnings, minor warning for drowning mention

475 words

Akiteru straightened his mask and pulled the baseball cap down further, until the bill of it touched his sunglasses. This will work, he told himself, he’ll never know I’m there, I don’t want to hurt him again.

All his careful, neurotic planning came to nothing when he was immediately unmasked in the stands of the prefectural finals match. It’ll all be okay if Kei doesn’t see me, I’ll be fine.

Sometime in the last few years he realized he wasn’t happy. It wasn’t a sudden onset, a death in the family, a break up, that sort of heart wrenching, gut churning sadness that left a creeping coldness in its wake, no, it was slow. This sadness was like realizing you’d drowned, but only once your lungs were full, and you hadn’t even decided to go swimming. He couldn’t say when it started, but one day he woke up and he was only half a person, Kei wasn’t there, wouldn’t talk to him, and nothing could be right, like that.

Of course, he still blamed himself. He’d been the one to lie to his brother. Kei, forever innocent, wide eyed and so, so bright had believed him, and sometimes, when the school day was long and he didn’t think so hard, Akiteru had even believed himself. He was a starter, he played volleyball with the best of them, it was quite the dream. When he shattered Kei’s heart and his own dreams along with it was when things changed.

Something cracked, and no matter how long Akiteru avoided it, it was still cracked, and each year it got wider. So, here he was, now barefaced and profoundly scared, watching Kei do everything he never could and praying that maybe he could forgive him after all this time.

He blocked it. The spike from Ushijima, the spike that no one from Karasuno, or really any other team, had been able to fully block, and his brother had done it. Akiteru cheered so loudly he thought his lungs would give out, forgetting the nature of his secrecy, forgetting everything but this spark of pride and joy that had been desperately missing. Kei looked up at the sound of his voice and Akiteru froze.

It was only a moment, a second between serves when the ball switched sides and players moved positions, but their eyes met. If Akiteru had expected loathing, or apathy or even fear he’d received none of that. Kei’s eyes widened, almost imperceptibly, and then he smiled. He smiled and Akiteru took a deep breath like it was the first air he’d breathed in years. He smiled like he was still nine years old, the innocent, bright child that Akiteru remembered. Kei smiled like he’d forgiven him, sometime in the last few years when Akiteru had been blaming himself and slowly drowning, Kei had forgiven him.

~~~
It was the last night of training camp, the captains had decided to play card in order to find out who the best was for once and for all.
Kenma couldn't sleep. It might have been because of Lev's huge legs taking more space than needed and disturbing his own personal space, or maybe because of Taketora's snores. But maybe, just maybe it was the fact that tomorrow Shouyou would go back to Miyagi.
He felt disgusted at himself, deep, deep down, he was glad Hinata and Kageyama had been fighting and barely talking to each other since that meant Hinata would pay more attention to him, but now that they were getting along once more, what would be of Kenma? Lots of things could happen in a couple of weeks time until he saw Hinata again.
His chest ached.
He decided to go get some water, in order to calm down. It seems he wasn't going to be getting any sleep that night.
In the halls he saw Hinata, his face was pale. He gently tapped the redhead's shoulder, silently praying for him not to scream.
"Shouyo, what happened?" The setter asked.
"K-kenmaaa." Hinata wailed and shoved himself into the older teen's arms, burying his head in the boy's shoulder. "The captain, they," He sniffed, "They killed Akaashi-saaaaan."
"They what?" Kenma blinked.
"They killed Akaashi-san, t-they had this horribly dark aura surrounding them as he lay on the floor, face down, his body was limp, he's dead Kenmaaa." Hinata's voice was shaking.
Kenma just sighed, "Shouyo, that's just how Akaashi-san sleeps, he was probably trying to take care of Bokuto-san, but he can never stay up late."
Hinata raised his head and looked at Kenma, "Are you sure?? Then how can you explain the dark aura surrounding the captains??"
He raised a hand and pulled his hair behind his ear, "Kuroo... he... is a really intense guy, specially if it has to do with your captain or Bokuto-san, he's really competitive."
The redhead rose and put his hands on his hips, "Ah, so it was like that! You should have said it sooner!" His bright smile was back on his face, "Man, I was really worried! I didn't know what to do!"
Kenma looked around, looking for anything that could distract him from Shouyo's beautiful smile.
"By the way kenma, what are you doing up so late?"
"Nothing... I couldn't sleep." He stared at the floor as he replied.
"Really? How come?" Hinata asked.
"Lev's futon wasn't enough for him it seems, he was slowly taking over mine too." Kenma looked out of the window, it was a peaceful starry night.
"Man, I just wanted to pee but after seeing the captains like that I no longer want to sleep!" He followed kenma's eyes and found himself staring at the sky. "Uuuuuuooooo the stars in Tokyo shine differently from the ones in Miyagi!!"
"Um, yeah, it's because of pollution." He raised an eyebrow.
"You think?? Is this the sky you look at every night?" Hinata's eyes were glued to the nightly scenery.
"Yeah, if I'm not playing video games, I do stargaze every now and then."
"I'm always looking at the stars when I'm talking to you!!" The redhead said, his voice a little more quiet than usual.
Kenma's heart skipped a beat. He swallowed. "Then maybe we were watching the same constellation without realizing it."
"Isn't that really cool!" Hinata seemed excited. "I know!" He gasped and grabbed Kenma's hand, taking the older boy by surprise. "Let's find a constellation we can both look at while we are texting each other!" He dragged him outside and sat on the floor.
"Which one do you like?"
"Don't know... I don't particularly like any." The pudding head sat next to Hinata.
"Awww come on Kenma! Is there anything yo actually like??" Hinata asked, half-jokingly.
'It's now or never,' the boy thought, "Yeah, there is." He gazed at the stars, their dim light comforting him.
"Really?? What is it??" Hinata's face was suddenly in front of him.
Looking at the floor he could feel the courage he had built up, fade away. No, he had to tell him, maybe he wouldn't have another chance and Hinata would be leaving tomorrow.
Taking a deep, deep breath, he looked at Shouyo straight in the eye,
"You."
~~~

Oh dear, I haven't written in ages, but I hope you like it!! Also, sorry for the cliffhanger~
