FILL: TEAM FUKUTOMI JUICHI/KINJOU SHINGO, G
Word Count: 1214
Notes: Clearly, this got out of hand…
When Onoda returned back to the rest stop bench, there was another boy throwing up into his bag.
“Umm…” Searching through all of his knowledge of social interactions, Onoda came back somewhat wanting with some other words to say to that. Luckily, that seemed to be the only thing that needed to be said for the other boy’s head to whip around in the shock.
“Sorry,” the red-haired boy muttered, weakly. “I didn’t know anyone else was…” He looked down at the bag in his hands. “Oh, crap. This isn’t my bag…”
“N-no…” Onoda said. “It’s okay though!” he added quickly.
“Shit, this is your bag?” the other boy shouted. “I’m so sorry! I’ll replace it for you!”
“No! No!” Onoda said, shaking a hand. “I, well… to be honest, I had already vomited in it… I was going to clean it but… maybe throwing it away would be best.”
The boy nodded. “Yeah… that’s kind of why I thought it was mine. But, now I remember Kageyama made me leave it on the bus and he said he’d take care of it.”
“Kageyama?” Onoda asked.
“Yeah. He’s…” The boy trailed off, frowning. “Wait, sorry. I haven’t even introduced myself! I’m Hin–” The boy stood as he was introducing himself, but got distracted by the fact the he was still holding Onoda’s unfortunate bag. He awkwardly put it down before continuing with a little less gusto. “I’m Hinata Shoyo.”
“Onoda Sakamichi,” Onoda replied with a nod. “You said you were on a bus? Were you going to the sports complex at the top of the hill here?”
“Yeah,” Hinata said. “My team is going there to train. But then I felt sick so… I got off and said I’d meet up later since it’s not too far.”
Onoda nodded. “Yeah! The same thing happened to me. I mean… I get motion sick on bus rides too.”
“Oh,” Hinata said. “I just get nervous before matches…Hey, wait! If you were heading there too, does that mean you’re one of the teams we’re practicing with?”
“Oh, um… Maybe?” Onoda said. “I didn’t know our team was practicing with anyone else.”
“Weird,” Hinata said. “Well, anyway. Sorry about your bag…”
“No, it’s fine,” Onoda said waving his hands. “Really, there was nothing important in it at all. I had some notes, but I can get copies from Imaizumi-kun.”
“Is he one of your teammates?” Hinata asked, sitting back on the bench.
“Yeah,” Onoda said brightly. He settled back down on the bench, seeming delighted to have some company. “He’s really good! He’s super fast and he’s always planning what to do next.”
“Sounds kind of like Kageyama,” Hinata mused. “He thinks he’s the smartest and best at everything and he’s all…” At this Hinata made a bit of a growling noise, and scowled while waving his fingers in a clawing motion. “Everyone thinks he’s scary but actually he’s just a dork.”
“I guess that’s a little like Imaizumi-kun,” Onoda said thoughtfully. “He does scowl sometimes. I don’t know about the…” Onoda tried to mimic the growling, but he failed to capture the same feral quality Hinata had achieved.
Hinata laughed. “So, what position do you play, Onoda-san? Are you a spiker, like me? Or maybe a libero? You don’t seem like a setter, somehow.”
“Uhh… I’m a climber?” Onoda said.
Hinata’s eyebrows knit together in confusion. “What? So, like… You climb the net or something? Is that allowed?”
“Net?” Onoda asked, imagining a huge fishing net being cast over the road as cyclists tried to avoid it. “Wouldn’t that be dangerous? It might get tangled on the bike wheels.”
“Bikes?” Hinata asked. “Your team plays volleyball on bikes?”
“Volleyball?” Onoda asked.
A long moment of silence stretched between them, filled only with blank staring.
“Okay, let’s start over…”
“Onoda-kun!”
Onoda whipped around sharply, forcing himself to look away from the top of the hill on the bike track that he had been focusing all of his attention on. Naruko and Imaizumi were making their way to him.
“Naruko-kun! Imaizumi-kun!” Onoda said.
“There you are,” Naruko said. “We’ve been looking all over for you. We thought you were going to come right back to the complex as soon as you felt better. What took you so long?”
“Oh, well…”
“And where’s your bike?” Imaizumi asked. “We checked the equipment and noticed it wasn’t there.”
“Uh…”
“I figured you were trying to sneak in practice without us,” Naruko said. “Trying to best us behind our backs?”
“No, of course not,” Onoda said quickly. “It’s just, well…”
Before Onoda could explain further, a blur of silver and orange came tearing over the hilltop, screaming. Onoda whipped around at the sound.
“Hinata-kun! Slow down!”
“The brakes aren’t… braking!”
“No, Hinata! You have to–”
Nothing further was said before Hinata wiped out in a nearby bush.
“Hinata-san! Are you okay?” Onoda shouted.
“I-I’m good!” came the reply from the bush. “I didn’t break the bike.”
Onoda laughed nervously as Naruko and Imaizumi exchanged odd looks with him. “I wasn’t worried about the bike, per se,” Onoda called back to the bush.
“Hinata!” Another boy came running over the hill and stopped by the bush. “You idiot! I know that was you! What the hell are you doing?”
Hinata popped out of the bush. “Oh, Kageyama. Did you see how fast I was going? Onoda-san let me borrow his bike and it’s super fast! It’s so much better than my bike at home. It’s all like whoosh and there are so many parts and I didn’t ask how the brakes work.”
Kageyama scowled. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere. The team expected you to be back a long time ago, and now I see you’ve been trying to break your neck.”
“It’s fine,” Hinata said. “Onoda-kun let me borrow his helmet for safety.” He unclipped the yellow helmet from his head and waved it to prove his point.
“That won’t protect your neck, dumbass!”
“That must be Kageyama-san,” Onoda said. “Maybe Hinata-kun was right. He does look like Imaizumi-kun.”
“Wait, what?” Imaizumi asked.
Naruko laughed. “He’s right. I think it’s the scowling.”
Imaizumi glared at him.
“Exactly!” Naruko said. “That face right there.”
Hinata picked the bike out of the bushes and wheeled it back over to Onoda. The bike was fine, and while Hinata was covered in scratches, it didn’t seem to affect him. “Thanks, Onoda-san! That was super fun. When you’re not busy with your bike stuff, you should come by the gym and I’ll teach you how to play volleyball!”
“Oh, I don’t know…”
“It’ll be fun!” Hinata promised. “I bet you’ll be good at it. Can you jump?” To illustrate his point, Hinata leaped up, shocking Onoda slightly.
“Oh, I…” Onoda tried to duplicate the effect, but only got a few inches off the ground.
“Hmm,” Hinata said. “It’s a good start. I bet you’re fast though… Oh, well. We can work on it!”
“Wait…” Before Onoda could protest, Hinata was already running off, urged on with the insistence of Kageyama.
“Bye, Onoda-san!”
“Uh, right… bye, Hinata-kun!”
Onoda turned back to Imaizumi and Naruko, whose expressions were mixes of confusion and amusement.
“So, how did you meet that guy?” Imaizumi asked.
“Oh, umm… he threw up in my bag…”
