Bonus Round 1: Quotes

Bonus Round 1: Quotes

SASO 2015 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

PLAY BALL! For this round, we'd like you to take inspiration from songs, sayings, poems, and other kinds of famous words.

Because this is our first full round, please read this post carefully before proceeding!

This round ends at 7PM on June 13 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!" -Kermit the Frog
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Yachi & Kiyoko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Yachi/Kiyoko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • You cannot fill your team's prompts or your own prompts.

Manami had a bad habit of going along with people who weren't worth the energy.

"Just cause I allowed you to come out to dessert with me doesn't change anything between us."

Teshima himself had a tendency of tilting his chin up to the sky, when he talked over crowds and clouds, and when he would pause to look at them, he would leave teeth just slightly edged onto his lip, every smile he took at them carrying the spirit of a grimace with it. Sometimes, at the edges of his jaw, up near his ear, where his hair would wave with with the breeze, they could see slight stubble, that never got any longer or any shorter.

"I know."

They had not yet touched the food that had been placed in front of them. It was pretty, certainly, but just the kind of chilled cream that would send shocks through their teeth, leave an ache in their chest that not even hours of cycling could wash away.

"Everyone knows me at this place, you know. I've been coming ever since I was a second year in junior high. I don't suppose you'd have anything like that, now would you?" He chuckled to himself as they nodded, leaned the curve of their cheek into their hand, dug their nails into their temple. "Come on now. At least try what I ordered for you. The workers think you're weird enough for refusing in the first place."

They droned in agreement, staring out the window of the cafe. There was a kind of spark Teshima had in races - something inescapable, when every movement was down to the wire, when they could hear his every breath, and - they felt as dead as they ever did, sitting inside, soft muzak settling and chilling their skin like dew.

"You'll hardly seem like a person if you don't try something. Come on, now. Even something like you has to eat every once in a while." He neatly sliced away a part of his own meringue, which Manami had noted, was drizzled with chocolate. When he held it up towards them, they snapped their teeth around metal with a clang only the two of them could hear. It melted in their mouth, sweetness only serving to sharpen a bitter taste they hadn't realized was present, keeping their gaze locked with Teshima's, until he slid the fork back with a sharp jerk. "I took Onoda here once. He loved it, even if the kid was too nervous to ruin how pretty he thought the food was." He dropped his eyes to his dessert, curls bouncing with smug indignation, when Manami was the first to break eye contact. "I could never explain just how easily he charmed every worker here, even if he ended up breaking a jar of sauce over his own feet ... even if I did have to pay for that."

Manami snorted at that, a little more musical.

"Really now? Love to laugh about embarrassing stories? Kinda hypocritical - I don't think you ever once told anyone about that silly race debacle a while back."

They pushed their seat back, jolting the table forward and into Teshima's gut. Just as quick, he grabbed their wrist, looked over to suspicious waiters with a friendly wink, a wave, and back up to Manami. "Don't cause a scene." When he raced, he had to yell - but when he was inches away, he could whisper in a sing-song tone that meant nothing at all to them.

"Then why," and they bit their tongue, desperate to be more succinct, because he didn't deserve an ounce of their time, because every word they wasted on him felt like another weight locking them in place opposite him, "Why did you bother?"

He was infuriating. He never shut up, and it seemed like he was just forcing them to put forth the effort to -

"Oh." Manami could never make a whisper sound as disgusted as it needed to be, not enough to fit their narrowed eyes, not enough to fit biting their cheek to the point of iron filling every sense in their head. But they refused to repeat it.

His lips parted, a smirk of anticipation growing. "So slow, Sangaku."

"Don't."

"I didn't realize you were gonna be so dim outside of a race. And here I was wondering if I just straight-up imagined that race."

"If you want me to spit in your face so badly, then race me. Don't waste my time with pointless fluff." Their voice rose, beginning to crack over a tone they almost never used, and would never use if they could help it. But who they were depended on too much in a given moment, and Teshima had a way of spinning every situation out of control. That was exciting on a bike, where they had a foothold, but on solid ground - that could swallow them up and leave nothing behind. Their shoulders refused to stay still, as they forced themself to close their mouth, already too aware of the people looking over again.

Teshima edged out of the tight grip of the table and wall behind him, half-sliding next to them, slipping his hand from their wrist to around their waist, close enough for his hair to crinkle against their ear. He smelled more like sun and grass and oil than any train would allow, even on a day as hot as this.

They went on, in a dead whisper. "If I remember right..." And their hand crept up to his shoulder. "You were complaining about how I played with you, back then."

He sighed, breath too hot against their shoulder, his head tilted down for once. "And this is my turf. If you think I'm so boring," he muttered, "Then you should work a little harder to fill the space yourself."

Too close to their own height, Manami could hardly see his expression, but was well aware of his fingers pressing against their hip, keeping them locked just as tightly as their arm around him. "Okay." He startled at the upward lilt their voice took, and a sly smile spread across their face. "If this is your stage ... what game do you feel like playing?"

Chess you have no idea of the unholy noises I made while reading this, oh my goodness.

I love hatedates. The entire concept of them is just great - it's just like "Teshima why did you take them out to a nice place if you hate them so much" and there's not even a reason for it. It's just nice, I can't really find the words to describe it.

I really love your prose: how it kept the air of tension throughout, how you worded their dialogue, and everything down to the way they looked at each other. I'm so glad you managed to make such a heavy quote fit such a light-hearted situation without taking away any of its meaning. Thank you so much for filling!! ٩(^ᴗ^)۶
