If there's one thing that Yaku can say about Lev Haiba, it's that Lev never ceases to surprise him--and it's not always in the best way. First, Lev spoke fluent Japanese only, which was good for all of them. Second, when Yaku had first come across the boy, he had great expectations. After all, Lev was among the tallest of the team and would be very useful in actual matches... Until they actually had him play. Needless to say, he was awful and that actually surprised Yaku. He had silently given Lev a second chance to prove himself, which Lev had also somehow managed to mess up. Lev was probably the worst at basics out of the entire team, and so Yaku ended up having to lower his expectations (especially to help Kuroo train Lev).
However, he still ends up surprised. For instance, how the hell did Lev end up stuck high up in a tree with that thin, lanky body of his? Lev can probably jump down with that entire one-hundred-ninety-four centimeter body of his without as much of a scratch (unlike Yaku himself, though he hated admitting it).
"Are you stuck up there?" Yaku calls out, completely unamused by the guilty look that suddenly crosses Lev's face.
"Yaku-san! Please save me!" Lev cries back.
This, Yaku thinks as he feels a migraine coming on, is unbelievable. Truly.
"How did this even happen?"
"I was—" And Yaku hears a yelp, whine, and the rustling of leaves before something white darts away from Lev and onto the branch across. Hasn't this happened before, but with Kenma? It seems like Lev has yet to learn that, ironically, real cats are not very fond of him despite his best efforts to be friendly. Feeling Lev's dejection even from all the way on the ground, Yaku almost, almost feels sorry for him.
"Are you able to get down?" Yaku asks, quietly calculating how much time it would take for him to go back to the Nekoma gym, retrieve a ladder, and figure out some master plan to get Lev down. Kuroo's already replied to his text, but is taking far too long to get here—presumably bogged down by having to explain how this happened yet again.
When Lev's voice reaches him to tell him all about his attempts, Yaku realizes in hindsight that it was a stupid question to ask. If Lev had been able to get down, he would've already done so.
It takes half an hour, a bunch of scrambling within the Nekoma members, quieting down Taketora and Kuroo as they laugh, and making sure the cat is on solid ground before Lev and Yaku are back in the gym, the two of them alone on the side of the court.
"You need to stop doing that," Yaku sighs as he holds out several band-aids to Lev.
Lev huffs, taking the strips so he can lay them across the scratches on his arm. "But Yaku-san, it needed saving! It couldn't get down!"
"I think you need saving more," Yaku replies, a hint of sarcasm in his voice after he closes the medical kit. He raises a brow when Lev doesn't say anything for a moment and their gazes meet.
"But that's why you're there, Yaku-san!" Lev says with wide eyes.
Yaku, feeling himself flush, kicks Lev in the back.
