FILL: TEAM KAGEYAMA TOBIO/OIKAWA TOORU, G.
—
He may be called a genius, but there are a lot of things that Kageyama doesn't know about volleyball. He recalls the empty court, the ball hitting the court behind him, the why, why, why echoing in his head. He just wanted to win—he wanted to win and so did everybody else, so why didn't they catch his toss?
Why didn't they?
It eats at him for the rest of the year, when he lies back in bed and tosses his volleyball into the air while he can't sleep. He doesn't miss the anger at school, the way that everyone turns away from him and whispers like he can't hear them--but Kageyama just shuffles away from them as fast as he can, the heat of shame on his face. What has he done? It's them who can't hit his tosses, them, them—
"Kageyama."
That voice brings Kageyama out of his reverie and he looks up only to see Sugawara looking at him with what he thinks are concerned eyes. Kageyama's gaze then goes to the ball in his hands and the court around him. It's full. No one has left (yet, his mind says to him, yet). His eyes return to Sugawara once he feels a warm pat to his shoulder and he's greeted with a toothy grin.
"You can do it, Kageyama. Don't be nervous; we're here for you. We're a team."
A team, that's right. Kageyama is a genius, but he's not a genius alone like the way he heard Iwaizumi yell at Oikawa that one night. Then he remembers that he's taking Sugawara's place, a third year who won't be able to play after the last tournament. Kageyama imagines himself being replaced by a younger student in volleyball and swallows the saliva in his throat—Sugawara has sacrificed a lot for them to do well.
Still, Kageyama can feel the unease gnawing at the back of his head (the empty court, the sound of a ball hitting the ground, a light thud). He lets Sugawara lead him to the side despite his protests of "I'm fine, Sugawara-san! I need to practice!" and he sits down, pliant under Sugawara's firm touch. That was what Sugawara had that he didn't, Kageyama notes as he watches Sugawara walk toward Hinata and Daichi, the three of them laughing together after. People. People wanted to go to Sugawara, and they didn't want to go to him.
Kageyama swallows the lump in his throat and balls his hands into fists, then letting them go to look at his palms.
These hands, they know volleyball well, precise and graceful fingers that he can control as he pleases. Callused, sore, red from endless days of practice—he doesn't lack in that, he knows. That's why he's here, but it doesn't stop him from thinking about what he's missing. Sugawara has told him to watch other people, yet he doesn't quite understand what he's supposed to see. He doesn't read them like Sugawara does; he only knows anger from personal experience, from seeing it from a close distance, but he'll try if it'll make him better. If it'll make the team better.
Sugawara returns to check up on him and Kageyama inhales a breath before beginning to speak.
"Sugawara-san," he says as he stands up and when Sugawara looks up at him, he continues. "I'll do my best for you."
Sugawara's eyes widen before he grins, and Kageyama feels heat flush in his cheeks.
