the relationships here are a bit ambiguous, so sorry about that. i really can't resist a dapper kinj is the real moral of this story.
it's like someone waving from a great distance, a plume of smoke on the horizon, hearing a voice from deep underwater. it feels like a nightmare but he can't wake up, the sun heavy on his eyes and heat pressing down like a blanket of lead. these are the last three people onoda would have expected to appear, to be responsible for this, but here they are, blink after blink, no matter how the slamming of his heart tries to reject it.
the verdant shade of makishima's hair shimmers in the desert heat like he's a mirage, like he might disappear, the familiar crook of his mouth no longer benign. he's saying something, one hand tucked into the back pocket of tadokoro's trousers, and tadokoro is laughing, an edge to the sound onoda's never heard before. tadokoro is always larger than life, the easy swagger of his gait and blatant disregard for the forces arrayed against them saying clearly: you can't touch me. the drape of his arm around makishima's shoulders is careless and affectionate, habitual. beneath his other arm, kinjou is silent.
makishima and tadokoro stride forward as if they do not see the constabulary or onoda; kinjou looks at nothing else. he is a slim, dark figure against the sun-blasted sand and the pitiless blue of the sky, shoulders straight and firm. there's a neatness to his suit that suggests a certain flair, the rich darkness of the fabric versus makishima and tadokoro's lighter, more practical clothing, the stalwart angle of his bowler hat. his glasses are the same, rose-colored and round, but the eyes behind them are flat and dark, reptilian. onoda has never thought him harmless, but nothing could have prepared him for the viper revealed.
kinjou stops and the other two stop with him, no signal or command that onoda can see, just a perfectly timed cessation of motion. this curious synchronicity is not new but context gives it new shading. the hairs on the back of onoda's neck rise.
"gentlemen," kinjou says, voice smooth and low, carrying across the sand. "it certainly is a nice day, isn't it?"
"you're under arrest," the constable says, and kinjou tilts his head as if to say, oh?
"i'm afraid not," he says, and before onoda can speak there's an explosion behind him, a wave of heat and pressure throwing him down on his face.
the three of them are gone by the time he struggles back to his feet, ears ringing and sand in his teeth, the image of kinjou's hand raised in farewell burning on the backs of his eyelids. that was for him, onoda knows, lungs heaving, skin aching, entire world turned over. what he doesn't know is why.

I too can always be swayed by a dapper Kinjou and equally much by a villain Kinjou so this delights me, thank you so much!

kinjou is a complete menace, tbh.
