FILL: TEAM KUROO TETSUROU/OIKAWA TOORU, G
--
The summer heat has his school shirt sticking to him, even with the low hum and blasts of air that come periodically from the fan Kunimi has perched in the corner of his room. Usually they meet up after volleyball practice, and loose cotton doesn't stick as much as the starched fabric of his shirt, but today they're here to study, not to watch a movie or eat Kunimi's mother's cooking.
And they needed it, for the most part. Between the three of them, the only one with good grades is Kunimi. Even though Kindaichi is passing everything, his grades aren't anything to write home about, and then there's Kageyama, who is in a league of his own when it comes to just scraping by academically.
He stares at the page, willing the symbols to form themselves into shape, into something his brain can make sense of, but between the heat, the low hum from the fan, the slow tap, tap of Kindaichi's pencil against his page as he reads–
"You're not paying attention." Kunimi's voice shakes him out of his thoughts, drags him into the present. Kageyama starts up from the page he hasn't really been reading to Kunimi's face, his expression hanging somewhere between boredom and exasperation, then stares down the length of the pen pressed against his chest suddenly.
Kageyama chews at his lips with his teeth, pulling away enough skin that he can taste metal, casts his gaze away from Kunimi's with a pout.
"I still don't understand why we have to learn about this stuff," he says, folding his arms across his chest and huffing a sigh, "we're Japanese, why do we need to know greek history?"
"We're learning about the romans," Kindaichi chirps from the other side of the table, still tapping his pen against his page. He's smiling now though, and if Kageyama looks right, he can almost see the fondness behind the smug smirk.
"We're learning about Julius Caesar," Kunimi clarifies finally, removing his pen from where the nib was pressing against Kageyama's sternum. He glances down at the spot of red ink that has formed there against the crisp white and goes back to chewing his lip.
"He was a roman emperor who was stabbed to death by his council. Even his closest friend, Brutus. That's why these were his last words." Kunimi punctuates his words by jabbing at the book in front of him with his finger, entirely out of rhythm with Kindaichi's tapping.
Kindaichi snickers softly, finding something funny in either the misfortune of roman emperors or in Kageyama's inability to concentrate, and Kageyama frowns again, listens to the whirr of the fan to drown out Kunimi's explanation.
"It just goes to show that tyrant rulers get what they deserve."
Kunimi closes his book.
--
When they sleep over at Kindaichi's house two days later, it's even warmer.
They're three in a bed made for two at most, covers tangled around their legs to keep them all from sweating, but Kageyama isn't thinking much about the heat, even though his fringe is plastered to his forehead and his hands are sticky. Kindaichi is a little too tall, even for his own bed, and his ankles keep knocking Kageyama's every time he tosses and turns, flips his pillow to the cold side to try and find any relief from the heat. On his right Kunimi is still and silent, already breathing evenly and softly.
But Kageyama isn't thinking about that; hasn't been thinking about anything but an emperor's last words for two days straight now, can't help but think that emperor and king are words too close together for comfort, and even though he's just a kid playing volleyball, he has his council all the same.
And every so often he can see them sharpening their knives.
Kindaichi's ankles bump against his again and he exhales, turning his head untill he's face to face with Kindaichi's wide eyes, looking almost eerie in the dark.
"Can't sleep?" he doesn't whisper, knows Kunimi won't wake up unless there's a fire or something, and even then–
"No," Kageyama answers, keeps his gaze fixed somewhere between Kindaichi's face and a point on the far wall.
"Are you too warm? I can go and ask if I can bring the floor fan in here or something."
"It's not that."
Kindaichi frowns, Kageyama can just about make it out in the gloom.
"I've been thinking about Julius Caesar some more."
There's silence, then– "Well at least that means you were finally paying attention to what Kunimi was teaching you."
Kageyama grunts, turns his face away, rubs at an errant bead of sweat as it forms on his forehead.
"Kageyama, no one's going to stab you to death, if that's what you're thinking."
Kageyama grunts again, swallows around the lump in his throat.
And wonders if Brutus had ever had the gall to say the same.
--
It's their last middle school tournament, the quarter final match, and they're losing.
They're down by three points in the third set, and Kageyama's throat is so tight it feels like he might choke.
His newest nickname, the one he'd first heard weeks ago whispered in the changing rooms after everyone had thought he'd already left, is on his team's lips easy and often now; and every time he hears King of the Court he feels another knife find its mark.
And thinks, maybe he's just a kid on a volleyball team, but he could very well bleed out on this court without anyone noticing.
And thinks, without much meaning to, of dead emperors and their last words.
Et tu Brute?
