Notes: Gah, I know you already had one amazing fill on this, but this prompt would not leave me alone and I just had to do something for it. Clearly, I went overboard.
“Okay, each of you pick one of these and then read them both out, and I’ll figure out what I would do in that combined scenario.”
Suga stares disbelievingly up at Asahi as he shoves the note cards into his and Daichi’s hands.
“Scenarios?” Daichi asks.
Asahi nods. “Right, right, so I’m prepared for anything.”
Daichi squints at the card he pulled. “Um, this one says a water pipe bursts at the restaurant you’re at.”
Suga pulls the first card in his pile. “This one... just says ‘Clown Pants’?”
“Right” Asahi says. “So, most clown pants are waterproof, so I hide behind him to block the water, and then he gets to feel like a gentleman, saving me from getting soaked. Then I pick out one of the colors of the polka dots on the pants to compliment him! Boom! Nailed it!” Asahi finished with a punch to the air. “Okay, next date scenario.”
“Wait, okay,” Daichi says. “Are all of these crazy scenarios? I thought this would be like… conversation topics?”
Asahi shakes his head. “No, I have a completely different set of flashcards for conversation topics,” he says, pulling the next set of cards from his pocket.
Suga grabs for the set of note cards, but Asahi dodges him.
“No, Suga! We can’t skip ahead! I planned out this date preparation perfectly! Two hours of disaster scenarios then an hour and a half on conversation topics, and then that leaves half an hour for picking out my outfit and then I’ll have exactly five minutes to sprint to the restaurant so that I’m only five minutes late!”
“Good lord,” Daichi mutters, scrubbing his hand over his face.
Suga, always good at guessing what Asahi will do next, manages to get ahead of him and grabs the note cards from him. “Okay, let’s see what we have here. Whales. Parades. Electricity. And... the rest are blank.”
“I couldn’t think of anything else,” Asahi sighs.
“Okay, Asahi,” Daichi says, standing up from his spot on the couch. “Don’t you think you’re stressing out about this too much? I mean, it’s just Noya.”
“No, it’s not just anything,” Asahi replies. “I have to be prepared so the date will go perfectly.”
“Yeah, but…” Daichi pulls one of the cards from the pile. “But he’s not going to… wear 3D glasses the entire time?”
“That happened!” Asahi says. “All of those things on those cards happened to me. Well, most of them happened to me. Some of them happened to characters in Lifetime movies or Oprah Book Club book protagonists… But mostly to me!”
Suga raises his eyebrows and pulls another card. “Riding in the sidecar of his motorcycle and the sidecar comes off and goes down a flight of stairs?”
“Me!” Asahi says. “That one was me!”
“How did it go down a flight of stairs?” Suga asks. “Weren’t you outside?”
“Also Noya doesn’t have a motorcycle,” Daichi points out.
“Exactly! It’s unexpected and you have to prepare for the unexpected or everything will be ruined!”
“Asahi,” Suga says. “It’s Noya. He doesn’t have a motorcycle. He might be too short to drive a motorcycle. And he won’t wear clown pants… Probably.”
“And he definitely won’t…” Daichi picks another card from the pile. “Show up with another woman? That one has to be a Lifetime one, right?”
Asahi shakes his head slowly.
“Right, well. Screw that.” Daichi tears up the card with a flourish.
“Look, it will be fine,” Suga says. “You already know each other, so the date has to go great. And you can always talk about volleyball if you run out of things to talk about... Instead of whales...”
“Volleyball!” Asahi says, hitting his forehead. “Of course! Duh! Where’s a pen? I need to add that to the flashcards.”
Suga grabs him by the shoulders and stops him from scurrying away to tear the house apart for pens. “Asahi, neither of you will need a flashcard to remember volleyball exists, okay?”
“Why don’t we do normal date prep stuff?” Daichi asks. “Like, picking out clothes. That was one of the things you wanted to do, right?”
“Yes!” Asahi says. “Yes, I did want you guys to help me with that. Maybe I could borrow some of your clothes, I don’t know if any of mine are good enough… Do either of you have any sexy cargo pants?”
“I… I…” Suga stutters, shaking his head. “That’s definitely not a thing.”
“Or maybe a sexy hat?” Asahi wonders aloud.
“Also not a thing,” Daichi adds.
“See, this is why I need you guys,” Asahi says. “Best date prep team!”
Daichi and Suga share a look and then a simultaneous glance at their watches.
“We should order pizza,” Suga decides. “This is gonna take a while.”
“On it,” Daichi says, already pulling out his phone.
“See,” Asahi says. “Dream team!”
“Hey, Asahi!”
“Noya!!” Asahi grips at the edges of his pockets. Suga had lost the argument about no cargo pants, but in exchange Asahi was deprived of his note cards. Suddenly, he has no idea what to say next. What did normal people say in this situation? Oh, God.
Before he can panic too much, Noya continues, seeming not to notice Asahi desperately grabbing at cards that weren’t there.
“I’m glad you texted me to meet you at your house,” Noya says. (Which was incorrect. Daichi had sent that text while Suga was giving Asahi a lecture about when it was okay to wear a socks and sandals combo on a date: Never.) “It makes a lot more sense than meeting at the restaurant, since you’re on my way there. And this way we get to start our date earlier, right?”
“I, uh… umm…” Wait, Noya had asked a question. What was it again? Asahi scrambles for a way out and reaches for his bottom left pocket which should have the emergency distraction cards… Wait, crap, Suga took those too!
“Damn, Asahi, relax,” Noya says, punching him lightly. “It’s just me. I’m not gonna bite.” His upwards gaze turns impish then. “Not on the first date, anyway.”
Asahi feels his face heat up, and he just imagines the ugly beet color it must be now. “I…”
Noya laughs and grabs his wrist. “Come on, we’re gonna be late if we just stand around in your doorway all day.”
Asahi tries to argue, but when Noya pulls him along, laughing and smiling the way he does, Asahi suddenly forgets all about his emergency cards.
From behind Asahi’s couch, Suga and Daichi sigh with relief as the door slams shut.
“Finally,” Suga says.
“I don’t know why we had to hide,” Daichi says. “I mean, was it really supposed to be a secret that we helped him get ready.”
Suga shrugs. Before he can answer, his phone beeps. “Hold on, I have a text… From Asahi…”
“And?”
Suga sighs. “Apparently, there’s a broken fire hydrant on the way there. To quote him, emergency cards and sandals would have helped in this situation.”
“Oh my God,” Daichi mutters.
Another beep. “Oh, he sent another one.”
Daichi reaches out and covers the phone with his hands before Suga can reply to the text. “Suga, maybe the baby bird needs to flail out of the nest on his own.”
The phone beeps again.
“We may need to destroy the phone,” Daichi continues.
Suga nods.
After a long moment of silence--interrupted only by phone beeps--Suga speaks up again. “Do you realize that now we’re alone in Asahi’s house?”
Daichi nods. “Do you want to go through his closet and burn all of the clothes he shouldn’t be seen in public in?”
“God, yes.”
